Sweet Saturday Sample: 9/22/12 Time Enough To Love–Betrothal: “A Giddy Rush”

Welcome back to Sweet Saturday Sample!  All excerpts here are rated PG-13 or milder. Here’s another post from my new WIP, my medieval trilogy Time Enough To Love.  Part 1 is called Betrothal.  The series is set in England and France in 1348.  Betrothal takes place at the court of King Edward III.

Lady Alyse de Courcy is a waiting gentlewoman to Princess Joanna, youngest daughter of King Edward.  After receiving the news that the new courtier, Sir Geoffrey Longford, is her betrothed, a dazed Alyse is less than happy with her arranged marriage.   Next morning, Geoffrey arranges to meet his betrothed at breakfast and explains his “plan” for them to spend a lot of time together.  Beginning with escorting her to chapel.

Edmund Blair Leighton: Pelleas and Melisande

Geoffrey knew she was displeased with him once more and inwardly cursed. He was making the situation worse but was at a loss to know to how to repair the damage. She walked beside him woodenly, her hand like a dry stick on his arm. I have faced enemy troops with less trepidation than this. Thoughts of battle strategies filled his head and he decided to seize the offensive tack as they wound their way toward the chapel. He doubted he could make things worse.

“You have been at court but a short while, Lady Alyse? I did not meet you when I was last here at Christmas.” Not only a ploy to get her to talk, he wanted to learn about her as well. If she would take the bait.

“No, sir. We did not meet.” She looked up at him and some of the fear retreated from her face. “I have been at court for two months now. Before that I lived in the household of Lord Penburthy, in service to his wife, Lady Elizabeth for the past seven years.” He hadn’t heard her speak so much at one time. Her voice, low-pitched and melodious, fell pleasurably on his ears.

“Were you excited then, to come to court?” Geoffrey experienced a giddy rush when a tentative smile played about her lips.

“Aye, my lord, I was eager to come. ‘Tis very grand here, especially after Merwyck Castle, near the Scottish border. A place beautiful, but wild. The castle did not have as many comforts as I find here.”

“What comforts?” His fascination grew as she blossomed before his eyes.

“Oh, warmth for one. The castle was so far north ‘twas always cold, even in summer. There were six other girls who served Lady Elizabeth, and we slept all in one room. Very noisy at night. To share with just one person here is like heaven.”

He held his breath, for as soon as the words were out she colored prettily and darted a fearful glance at him. With difficulty he held in his amusement; still she noticed. A delicate black eyebrow lifted. “You have a comment, my lord?”

Geoffrey laughed and, as they arrived at the chapel, took her hand, feeling that almost familiar rush of fire through his. “I would say, my lady, that you are indeed perceptive. To share a room, or a bed, with just one other person can be like heaven.” He lifted her hand to his lips, tingles firing off like sparks, and handed her into the chapel.

Thus Geoffrey begins to woo his bride-to-be.  Do you think he’ll succeed?

I have a tentative release date for Betrothal of late-October, with the other two books to come in November and December.  I can’t wait to share more of this story with you. 🙂

I hope you enjoyed this latest sample from  Time Enough to Love.  Stop by SSS tomorrow for six sentences from Only Scandal Will Do.   And today be sure to click here to visit more Sweet Samples.

Rescued! Guest Interview with Author Arlene Lam

As part of her Sizzling PR Blog Tour, I have the great pleasure of welcoming fellow historical author Arlene Lam to Jenna’s Journal today.  So glad to have you here, Arlene!  I hope you enjoy your time here chatting about your new release, Rescued.

Can you tell us a little bit about it?

Rescued is a Historical Romance with a twist. Set in the sultry bayous of New Orleans it tells the story of Jordan and Amelia, two characters who should never be together but who can’t be torn apart.

Rescued sounds fascinating just from that one line!  Do you only write in this genre? If not, what other genres/sub-genres do you write in?

For the time being Historical Romance is all I’ve written in. I do however have an idea in my head for a contemporary novel. I think it will be exciting to delve into new territories.

It absolutely is!  I think if you do, you’ll like the contrast. 🙂  What was your inspiration for this story?

It’s funny because the inspiration and idea behind Rescued formed long ago when I had
just graduated high school. I had been talking to a friend of mine and she had mentioned how it would be nice to see a romance novel that had a couple that reflected her own relationship. I went home thinking I would find one easily and give it to her but there were none. That night I started writing what would become Rescued then I stopped after a few months. I didn’t look at it again until my brother-in-law passed away. When I had first

started writing it he would come over and tease me about how I would never finish, and that it was a shame I was taking so long. He would also say he hoped he was alive to see it. After my brother-in-law died I decided it was time to finish.  It took me several years and many rewrites and revisions but I did finish.

Oh, that’s sad and inspiring at the same time, Arlene.  I hope your brother-in-law knows somehow that he helped you finish your book.  He’d be very proud of you, I’m sure.

Now, titles are one of the most important things to an author. How did you come up with your title? Was this the only title, or did you have a working title as well?

I can agree with you there. I agonized over the title. I ended up going through seven titles before I settled on Rescued but this was only after I finished. I never had a working title. The meaning behind Rescued is sweet and simple.  It defines the two characters’ relationship and how they managed to rescue each other and learn to love.

That does sound sweet!  And I bet there is another area you’ll agree with me on. I am a fanatic about my character names. Are the character names in Rescued special in any
way?

They are special to me because I have loved the names since a child. If I ever have a girl
I will name her Amelia. My son is named after my husband, but it’s understood that if we have another boy we will name him Jordan.

That is a wonderful idea, Arlene.  They are lovely names.

What was your process for writing this book? Is this different or the same as other books
you’ve written?

I think it was unorthodox because I just started writing and didn’t really have a
clear plan of where I was going or wanted to be. I think I am lucky that in the end I was left with something I was proud of and happy with. When I wrote the prequel to Rescued, Flowers of the Bayou, I knew without a doubt where I wanted to go and the process had been quick and it was different in that it was clear-cut. I think I enjoyed writing Flowers of the Bayou more but while writing Rescued there was a sense of unknown, what will each character do, how will it end? It felt like more of an adventure.

Do you have plans to turn Rescued into a series?

I do.  In Rescued there are several characters who I feel deserve their own stories. Jasper and Margaret are two and will be the first to follow Rescued in The Wedding. I plan to release their story by December.

Well I see you are not letting the grass grow beneath your keyboard! 🙂

So, who is your favorite hero or heroine and why? What qualities do they possess that make them memorable?

I know it may sound cliché, but my mother is my favorite heroine. She has always been a hard worker and she shows strength and determination that is admirable. For hero
I would have to say Langston Hughes, he was a great poet and broke so many boundaries.

Excellent choices!  And who was the first author and book you read in this genre?

Jude Deveraux The Conquest. It was an amazing book and I still read it at least twice a year.

I really need to read Jude Deveraux.  I’ll take your endorsement of The Conquest as a sign to put it on my TBR list.

And the last of my “writerly” questions, who has been the greatest influence on your writing?

My sisters actually. We all grew up reading so when I write something they are more than excited to read it. When they do they tell me what they think has gone wrong or where improvements can be made. They are also great at letting me know when I just need to let things stay the way they are.

It must be wonderful to have sisters who can critique your work properly!  The only child here is envious!

Now to what I deem the “fun” questions:

If you could have one wish granted just for you (not world peace, LOL), what would you
wish for?

Haha hmm let’s see. I would wish for complete world domination. Just kidding! I
would really wish for my life to continue being filled with joy and laughter and that I could
always have my family close. They mean the world to me.

And what is the most exciting/daredevil thing you’ve ever done?

When I was in Hawaii, I was dared to jump of a cliff into the water below. I did, but I can’t swim. Lucky for me my sister was good enough to save me.

Now that is a truly daredevil thing to do!  Looks like your life has been blessed with Rescue!  Thank you so much for sharing part of yourself with me and my followers, Arlene.

Arlene is also sharing her blurb and a wonderful excerpt from Rescued!

Blurb for Rescued:

The fire that burned when they were together was consuming.

Her whole life Amelia was told what to do obediently following the rules her domineering aunt set forth. Right down to letting the woman choose the man she was to marry. However this was about to change because from the moment she laid eyes on Jordan
Bradford the shy young maid was lost. But loving a man like him was beyond dangerous for more than the obvious reasons. However Amelia found herself throwing caution to the wind and willing to risk everything for just one kiss.

Intriguing and honest Jordan was drawn to Amelia instantly. Shy and witty Jordan knows that deep down there is a woman just waiting to be set free if only those around her would let her. Still he knew pursuing her was not an option. And even if it was she was already promised to another man. Yet every time she was near that knowledge was lost to him. Wasn’t forbidden fruit always sweeter? It was an added luxury that whenever he was in her presence his past seemed just that, the past. Just one look and a flame long though extinguished was awakened in him. So much so that Amelia was a woman Jordan decided needed to be rescued.

About the Author:

Arlene Lam is a twenty-nine year old wife and mother. Growing up she wrote short stories and poems that she would give to friends. As an adult she decided writing was what she yearned to do. She resides in Northern California with her husband and son and is currently working on The Wedding. A story that revolves around Jasper and Margaret two characters she feels deserve their own story.

Excerpt for Rescued:

Jordan didn’t like walking around in his own home feeling out of place, yet that was what he’d been doing day after day since his incident with Amelia. They were at an impasse, and it was awkward as hell. She was no longer just a servant and he could never again be just her employer. Amelia was doing her best to make that fact known.

Whenever he was near her he was now treated to a completely new facet of her nature he’d grown to loathe. Where was the Amelia with the warm smile and golden eyes, because he was getting a little tired of this new creature’s icy stares and crafty ways to responding to any of his requests—in truth it was becoming utterly frustrating. He’d ask. “How are you Amelia?”

“We ought to mind our own business Mr. Bradford.” She’d respond moving by.

“You look lovely today Amelia.”

“Sorry I can’t say the same, coffee Mr. Bradford?”

He’d spent the day frowning after that remark, but still he persisted. Trying the honest approach the next time he saw her he’d simply said. “I’m sorry Amelia.”

“You’re an ass Mr. Bradford.”

That one had been a little surprising and after she had gotten that out of her system the
strategy changed. It would go on like this for a week. “Good evening Amelia.”

“It’s noon.” She’d blandly state dusting the shelves of the library, the copy of Longfellow
standing out like a sore thumb on the side of the table.

“Amelia it’s gorgeous out today.” He would say.

“It’s dreary.” Was her drab response but Jordan had expected it and it was almost becoming a game to see what Amelia would say to him for the day. So he would test the waters again and again.

“Garden’s starting to bloom.” He had mentioned.

“I don’t believe it is.” She’d say.

“What do you think of my new painting?” he asked.

“It’s vile.” Amelia had said.

It really was a decent painting the woman in it reminded him of her, but yet again he wasn’t surprised at her reaction. She would do something different every week prior to this week’s deafening silence. She’d seen fit to char every dress shirt, pair of trousers and overcoat he owned. Of course she apologized profusely not knowing how she could be so careless so many times. She’d put such prominence in the pronunciation of the word so it made him laugh right in her face yet he’d accepted the joke of an apology while informing her he would deduct from her pay weekly until they’d been replaced. Needless to say his shirts were white and crisp.

The silence though was different; it was the sheer indifference it evoked. It was offensive, more than that it was unnerving, and yesterday he’d decided she was going to talk to him. “Amelia I need to speak with you please.” He popped his head out of his office only long enough to be acknowledged but not dismissed.

Taking his seat, he waited and dutifully if not haughtily she sidled in the door frame neither in nor out. She looked at him with a blank expression and he waved her in to take the chair across him at his desk. “Amelia.” Jordan began and watched as she shifted in her chair and stared at the grandfather clock with interest. “This cannot go on.”

She watched him, wishing him harm the whole time. She was angry and she didn’t want to hear what rubbish he wanted to spew. “Mmhm.” She muttered.

“I’m very sorry, you know this and I’ve tried for almost a month to try to get you to see it so now I’m just going to flat-out ask. Ms. Marriott I must know so that we can go on coexisting, when do you plan on letting this go and forgiving me?”

Never, she thought but she didn’t say that, instead Amelia regarded him carefully. And reclining in her chair she looked off as if in deep thought. “I reckon I’ll do both when pigs fly and if that ever happens Mr. Bradford I’ll be happy to eat mud pie.” Amelia rose then and stalked out.

Needless to say, yesterday had not been a success which was why Jordan now stood in the
middle of the foyer arms folded over broad chest face set in determination. “Amelia!” he bellowed and he was sure that wherever she might be in the house she should have heard him.

Pushing the sleeves of his shirt up to his elbow he waved an incredulous Vivian off as she came rushing to the spacious hall.

“Have you gone mad Mr. Bradford?” She gasped in slow retreat.

“I very well might have.” He began to yell Amelia’s name once more but halted when she appeared, coming down the hall near the library.

Amelia let her jaw drop but quickly brought her hand to her lips to cover both her shock and the laughter that threatened to escape.

“I thought you’d prefer peach cobbler over mud.” Jordan grinned triumphant because hanging from the sturdy chandelier, he’d managed to suspend—two feet from the floor with secure rope—two piglets squealing and all.

“That’s not really safe for the pigs now is it?”

“They are flying Amelia.” He winked.

“It better be good cobbler.” She gave in heading toward the kitchen.

“You could be having mud.” He smirked.

Oh, I love the ending to your excerpt!  Such a resourceful man.  I need to read more about this couple.  Thank you so much for sharing Rescued with us today, Arlene.  And I wish you great success with your new release.

A Scandalous Blog Tour–The Final Week

Time surely marches on and this third week of September marks the final week of my 30 stop blog tour.  I’ve had a lot of fun meeting people along the way, giving out Scandal Swag packs as I went, answering some fun and fanciful questions, and writing a heck of a lot of blog posts!  I feel like I’m all Scandal-ed out as far as thinking up topics.  At least, thinking up topics that the wider readership might find interesting.

What I came up with was four hopefully fun topics for my final blog tour stops:

Today, Monday, September 17, I’m at Kacey Hammell’s blog, talking about why my hero and heroine are “Made for Each Other.”

Tuesday, September 18, I’m over at Always A Book Lover, with a post on “The Wild 18th Century.”  And what I do talk about a bit is Harris’s List of Covent Garden Ladies–the 18th century version of a call girl directory!

Wednesday, September 19, you can find me at Reader Girls with “A Song For Scandal” that links Only Scandal Will Do with Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance.”

And finally, on Friday, September 21, I’ll finish my blog tour with a post on my book trailer for Scandal on Jacob’s Beloved Books.

Unfortunately, I don’t think I can embed the video into my post, so I’m giving everyone who hasn’t seen it a sneak preview so you can enjoy the post when you (hopefully) come to read it.  I’m extremely proud of this trailer and want to share it with the world at large.  But you, dear readers, are here now, so enjoy the work of the extremely talented Danielle Fine, creator of the Only Scandal Will Do book trailer:

I hope you come by and check out my posts this week.  Your support has been amazing these past eight weeks (!) and that support for me and my book has made a huge difference to my book’s sales.  As of right now, Only Scandal Will Do is ranked #50  on Amazon in the Historical Romance category and #54  in Regency Romance on Amazon.  The current ranking (which you know changes constantly) is holding right around 3,650 paid in the Kindle store.  I couldn’t be happier unless it was in the top 100!

Only Scandal Will Do is available at Amazon, All Romance EBooks, and iTunes.  And if you’d like to make my day, go on and “Like” Scandal at Amazon.

Stay tuned later this week for more updates.  I’ve got a couple of irons in the fire and as soon as they blaze up, I’ll certainly let you know. 🙂

Six Sentence Sunday–09/16/12 7 Days of Seduction: Day 5

Happy Sunday! For my Six Sentence Sunday post I’m back to  7 Days of Seduction, an erotic novella I hope will be ready for publication soon!

This snippet takes place on Day 5–just after my three sentences from Horny Hump Day. Ashley and Hunter have been indulging in a little wax play.  Now Hunter decides to cool things off.

Copyright (c) 123RF Stock Photos

“Ice can be used in conjunction with wax play. I hoped you’d like one or the other.”

As he spoke, the ice traveled smoothly over her back, up to her shoulders. She’d have thought it too cold, but he didn’t linger in any one place, so the sensation had sensual overtones, not the painful ones of the hot wax. Rivulets of cool water snaked down her flesh, creating a pleasantly familiar tension in her groin. Perhaps part of this adventure had merit after all.

Thanks so much for visiting me today.  Now pop over to the Six Sentence Sunday list and check out the rest of the snippets.  They’re fantastic!

Sweet Saturday Sample: 9/15/12 Time Enough To Love–Betrothal “A New Proposal”

Next morning, Geoffrey arranges to meet his betrothed at breakfast to explain his “plan” for them.

“Do I distress you this morning, Lady Alyse?”

“No more so than you did last night, my lord.”

“And did I distress you then?”

“Aye, my lord, you did. I think I made that quite clear at the time.”

“So I am again distressing you, my lady?”

            “Aye, my lord.”

            “How?”

            Alyse blinked. “How?”

Geoffrey squared his wide shoulders, and looked at her expectantly. “Aye, lady. How have I distressed you? I greeted you in a courteous manner. I have attended you most eagerly. I have held gentle conversation with you. So I would know which of these acts distressed you?”

Bewildered, she shrugged. “All of them, my lord.”

He frowned, and shook his head. “I have acted as a gallant courtier and it distresses you?”

She could think of no other way to explain it. “’Tis not your actions, my lord, that disturb me, but that you are a stranger to me.”

“But Alyse, how else can you come to know me? If we do not meet? If we do not talk? I have sought you out this morning to tell you I have solved the task you set me last night.” At her puzzled expression he reminded her, “You asked me to make time stand still. Though I regret I cannot do that exact thing, I believe I have found a way to accomplish the same ends. Which is for you to know me better, is that not true?”

Alyse thought a moment. In truth, she had asked for time to know the man she must marry. She nodded for him to continue.

“So, my lady, I propose that we meet as often as we can, every day, to talk and pass time together. By the end of the fortnight, I believe you will know me well enough to look forward to our nuptials as eagerly as I.” His face exuded kindness; his voice gentleness and warmth.

Alyse froze, as though ice had just covered her. Whatever she said to him last night, this was not the expected result. She tried to remember what she had asked of him, but thought of the next fortnight spent constantly in his company befuddled her.

Thus begins Chapter 4.  What do you think?  I have a tentative release date for Betrothal of late-October, with the other two books to come in November and December.  I can’t wait to share more of this story with you. 🙂

I hope you enjoyed this latest sample from  Time Enough to Love.  Stop by SSS tomorrow for six sentences from 7 Days of Seduction.   And today be sure to click here to visit more Sweet Samples.

Friday Favorites: The Meet

Nothing is more exciting that the first time a hero and heroine meets face to face in their book.  It might be a “cute meet” or an “omnious meet.”  But the first time is magical for both the couple and for their author. My favorite “meet” is anything but cute.  In Only Scandal Will Do, the heroine has just been auctioned off to the hero for a night’s pleasure in a brothel.  When he comes to take possession of his “goods” he finds he’s gotten more than he bargained for. 🙂

Someone fumbled with the door. She recognized the scratchy voice of the shorter kidnapper even through the wood, and darted toward the washstand.

The door opened as Kat skidded to a halt in front of a tall, cloaked and masked form.

One glimpse of the monstrous figure sent her scream echoing in the small room. She fled backward until she splayed against the wall, trapped. The dark shape advanced with frightening speed, cape billowing, the golden mask of a lion’s head glinting in the candlelight.

Flattened against the cold plaster as the towering apparition rushed toward her, she willed herself to vanish through the wall like a ghost. It reached a finger out and stroked her hair. A normal hand, thank God. The arm that disappeared into the black folds was clothed in dark red fabric of excellent quality. He was just a man. She lifted her chin and forced her eyes to meet his.

“Who are you, sir?”

“Your master, slave.”

Harsh words cloaked in a voice of deep velvet. A shiver of dread raced down Katarina’s body, as much from the words as from his tone. She gathered her courage and replied, “I am nobody’s slave. There has been a dreadful mistake.”

“I think not, my lovely. I paid a small fortune for your ownership this evening. Make no mistake about that.” He continued to stroke her hair and she twisted her head to the side. His mouth below the half mask twitched into an insolent smile. “I am pleased, however, that you possess courage as well as beauty.” His fingers touched her cheek. “The mask hid the slave’s wealth well.”

She jerked away. “You may have paid for a slave, sir, but what you find in this room is a lady in distress. Will you prove a gentleman or a rogue?”

“A lady in distress?” He laughed and straightened. “How did a lady come to find herself on display at an auction, scandalously clad in a transparent Greek costume, in Madame Vestry’s House of Pleasure?”

“House of Pleasure?” she squeaked.

“Where else would such a thing occur?” The man’s amusement seemed to deepen at her indignation. “And there will certainly be pleasure here tonight, slave.”

He ran a hand slowly down her arm, fingers trailing silkily against her bare flesh. Mouth agape at such a liberty, she slapped the hand away and ran for the door. With a long arm, he snared the diaphanous folds of her gown. The material strained against her body. Kat froze lest it rip, exposing her completely. Cursing her own folly for choosing such a costume, she swung around to face her captor.

Now it’s your turn!  Which book (yours or another author’s) has your favorite H/H meeting?  Come on and share!

Nobody Said It Would Be Easy: Guest Blogger Christine Warner

Today I’m welcoming back to the Journal Christine Warner with her newest release, Two-Timing The Boss.  Christine was here several months ago promoting her fabulous debut novel Some Like It In Handcuffs, so I’m sure you’re going to love her thoughts today on just how difficult that road to publication is for authors.

Nobody said it’d be easy…

I have to admit that when I started writing with dreams of publication I had no idea what I was really getting into.

The select few friends and family who knew of my dream encouraged me, rooted for me, cheered me on when the going got tough. Through rejections, failures, fears and uncertainty they stood by my side. And they were also there for the triumphs, jubilation, thrills and whoops of joy!

But through it all, one thing remained a constant.  Nobody promised me it would be easy.

And that darn Nobody hit the nail on the head…lol…it’s not easy. Many non-writers believe you just come up with a story and get it down on paper, or type it on your word document…or whatever you use—how hard can it be? You can whip out a best seller in a week, two if you are struggling for time.  HAHA…don’t I wish?

There is so much more work and effort and skill involved. The learning process is never-ending. POV, plotting, outlines, dialogue, junk or filler words, show vs tell…even well established authors say they are in a constant state of learning—and if you aren’t, your writing will grow stale.

What if you have a day job on top of your writing? There is nothing easy about juggling two professions. Personally, I go from worrying about schedules to worrying about writing time, verifying insurance to triple checking—or more—word choices. Then I have to deal with finding the right thing to wear, to throwing on the first t-shirt and scrub pants I find…lol. And of course I have to contend with applying make-up to making sure I describe my heroine and especially my hero so readers can visualize them. I’m not even going to get into discussing plots and conflicts!  Whew 🙂

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining. I love writing. I love coming up with stories and characters and settings. The dialogue, conflicts and ESPECIALLY the happily ever after. I couldn’t ask for anything more. It’s the perfect job 🙂

But once again I’m reminded that Nobody said it’d be easy. If you are a writer, it’s in your blood, a constant 24-7 friend—and sometimes foe—and if you are a reader, I bet you have similar feelings.

Today, I’d like to share my latest labor of love with you. Two-Timing the Boss is a sexy, contemporary romance featuring heroine Farah Smith and super sexy hero Keller Donovan.

BLURB:

Farah Smith is on a mission: secure the funds for her twin sister’s surgery.  She’ll do whatever it takes to succeed.  Even if that means putting her values aside to work for a man she finds morally bankrupt.  But when the real Farah meets her new boss, she wonders if she’ll be able to resist his sexy advances long enough to help her sister.

From the blonde wig, to the stilettos strapped around her ankles, Farah’s a clone of Keller Donovan’s harem of past assistants.  She can’t believe she’s let herself be talked into the disguise, let alone working for the man planning to demolish the hospital her sister so desperately needs, but the salary he offers is the only way she’ll be able to afford her sister’s surgery.  The moment Farah meets Keller she realizes her most daunting task isn’t typing, spreadsheets or organizing travel arrangements, but fighting the growing attraction toward a man whose ruthlessness is legendary in the boardroom as well as the bedroom.

Determined not to end up in a disastrous marriage like his divorced parents, Keller believes all relationships should have a shelf life of sixth months or less.  But when he meets Farah, all bets are off.  He not only wants her to continue as his personal assistant, but his own private bed warmer.  Unfortunately, his offer of an affair doesn’t sit well with her fairytale dreams or the strangled hold gripping his heart.

EXCERPT:

These damn shoes would be the death of her.  She could read the headlines now:  Penniless P.A. Falls to her Death while on Job Interview.

Almost to her destination, with no more mishaps, her confidence surfaced.  Okay, maybe mastering this heel thing wouldn’t be such a big deal.  Her steps became light, almost bouncy.  Although she sensed Keller Donovan behind her, she didn’t let it deter her feeling of success.  She stepped onto the large black and red area rug, less than ten feet from her target.  The leather chairs.

“Oh!”  Farah’s spiky heel caught on the edge of the expensive rug.  Her legs shook and she shot her arms out from her sides, circling them like a bird about to take flight.  She fought to regain balance inside the ridiculous stilts strapped to her feet.  A brawl to the death.  Over when she looked down to see the rug coming up to kiss her face.  She threw out her hands, sucked in a breath and closed her eyes, scrunching her face as she prepared for impact.

But nothing happened.  There were stars all right, and a blazing jolt of electricity shot from her toes, up her legs, through her body and exited with the small gasp which escaped her lips.  Somehow Keller Donovan had grabbed her around the waist before she met the floor.

Heat burned her cheeks.  He may have saved her body from bruises, but her ego, and whatever confidence she’d walked in with had shattered.

“Let’s not have an accident before your health benefits kick in.”  His breath tickled her ear from behind.  Chills hugged her backbone.

His touch released an unsettling flutter in her abdomen.  She sucked in her stomach from the pressure of his strong arms wrapped around her middle, afraid to breathe.

WARNING:  MATERIAL NOT SUITABLE FOR THOSE UNDER THE AGE OF 18!

NOT SAFE FOR WORK!

Participating authors in Horny Hump Day post three sentences from their published works or WIP, hot like a firecracker! LOL

Today’s Horny Hump Day finds us back with another new nibble from my current erotic novella WIP, 7 Days of Seduction.

On to Day Five–which finds Ashley and Hunter at their most colorful!  No pain no gain, right?  Then enjoy!  I think Ashley will–eventually. 🙂

Grendelkhan at the English language Wikipedia

The first drop of candle wax hit the cheek he had just kissed and she shrieked, as much from surprise as from the dart of pain that welled forth. The image of a hypodermic needle plunging into her ass rose in her mind. Another drop seared the opposite cheek and she clenched them together as she gripped the bar at her head.

It hurts so good!  Come by on Sunday to see the flip side of their wax play.

Please check out the Horny Hump Day blog site for the other sites on the hop and go visit the other hot authors.   The site also gives the details of how to sign up for next week if you’d like to play with us. 🙂

Thanks so much for visiting the Journal once more for Horny Hump Day.

My full-length historical novel, Only Scandal Will Do is available for purchase on AmazoniTunesARe and the Lyrical Press store.

Interview With Author Liz Grace Davis

Today I’m interviewing Liz Grace Davis who is on tour with her recent release Chocolate Aftertaste.  Please welcome Liz to Jenna’s Journal.

Hi, Liz.  So nice of you to stop by today and answer a few questions about your current release.

Tell us a little bit about your new release Chocolate Aftertaste.

Chocolate Aftertaste is about Nora, a woman who has always lived her life according to her father’s expectations. Until she almost marries the wrong man just to please him. The scales fall from her eyes and she runs off to a small town (Dreara), to rediscover herself and her dreams. After a few obstacles, she finds more than just herself. She falls in love.

Chocolate Aftertaste is not simply a love story. It’s a novel that deals with real life issues, decisions, and consequences.

Do you only write in this genre?  If not, what other genres/sub-genres do you write in?

No, I love to write in various genres. Chocolate Aftertaste is my second novel. My first was a YA fantasy, Tangi’s Teardrops.

What was your inspiration for this story?

Life and its twists and turns.

Titles are one of the most important things to an author.  How did you come up with your title?  Was this the only title, or did you have a working title as well?

Nora, my main character, escapes to a small town (Dreara) to find herself and the dreams she had lost along the way of doing what everyone expected from her. This little town is known for producing some of the best chocolate in Ireland.

Aftertaste symbolizes the consequences of the choices Nora makes while leaving in Dreara, both good and bad.

Chocolate Aftertaste was the title right from the very beginning.

I am a fanatic about my character names. Are the character names in Chocolate Aftertaste special in any way?

No, not really. I just used names I like.

What was your process for writing this book?  Is this different or the same as other books you’ve written?

It wasn’t special at all. I use this process pretty much for all my books. First I conduct research for a couple of months. Then I write up to three drafts, before moving on to the dreaded editing stage. I have a wonderful editor but I don’t dump all the work on him and relax. We work as a team, editing back and forth.

Do you have plans to turn Chocolate Aftertaste into a series?  Why or why not?

No, Nora’s story has been told and there’s nothing more to add.

What was the first author and book you read in this genre?

Gosh, that’s very hard to say. I’ve read way too many romantic women’s fiction novels. But I do enjoy Christy Hayes’ novels. Heart of Glass is a favorite.

Who has been the greatest influence on your writing?

I’m really not sure. I’ve read a lot of novels over the years—Nora Roberts, Jodi Picoult etc. I’m sure all the books I read had a combined influence on me that could be reflected in my writing, without me being aware of it.

If you could have one wish granted just for you (not world peace, LOL), what would you wish for?

Okay, since I can’t wish for world peace :(, I wish I could quit my job and become a full-time author.

What is the most exciting/daredevil thing you’ve ever done?

I’ll go for most exciting. That has to be getting married to the love of my life and best friend.

Jenna, thank you so much for hosting me today. I really appreciate it.

You are so welcome, Liz!  Best of luck with Chocolate Aftertaste!

Excerpt:

Nora turned her attention back to the reality in front of her. She hated arguments; sometimes she wished she could hide somewhere, just wait them out. Unfortunately, life was not like that.

She lifted her eyes to meet Liam’s. The ice in his eyes had not melted. She dropped her gaze.

Instead of flirting with her appetite, the large marinated tiger prawns made her stomach queasy, and the oriental noodles looked like neglected yarn left out in the rain. From the way he dissected his steak, Liam’s appetite was just fine. She gritted her teeth as his knife scraped the porcelain plate.

Unable to bear the silence between them, she leaned forward and whispered, “I hate it when you ignore me.”

“What do you want me to say?” He chewed the last of his food and waved for the waiter. “We’re done.”

The waiter nodded and scuttled over to remove their plates.

When the waiter was out of earshot, Nora hissed through clenched teeth, “I wasn’t done.”

Liam took a swig of water, probably wishing it were something stronger. “You didn’t look like you were hungry.”

“Stop treating me like a child,” she snapped.

“Stop acting like one.”

Nora’s cheeks heated. She contained her anger with difficulty. “That’s really insensitive.”

“What do you want from me, Nora?” A vein pulsed in his neck. “What exactly do you want me to say?”

“Say you want me to be happy.” Her eyes brimmed. “Don’t ask me to get rid of my best friend.”

He loosened his tie—and then slammed his fist on the table, knocking over Nora’s glass of water. The silver stream raced straight for her lap.

The waiter appeared as if from nowhere to replace the white tablecloth with a new one. Nora forced a smile and whispered an apology. The waiter nodded, and a minute later he left.

Ignoring the curious looks they got from the other diners, she dabbed at the moisture on her black jeans. “You can’t always explode every time I refuse to do what you want.”

Liam ignored her. “Ask to pay. I want to leave.”

Nora flinched, but abided. Paying wasn’t so bad—so long as it was fair. On their first and second date, he paid. On their third and a few more after that, they went Dutch. After one year, he asked her to pay for an occasional meal until it became an unspoken arrangement between them. The only thing Liam had paid for himself in three years was her engagement ring.
