Friday Favorites: The Meet

Nothing is more exciting that the first time a hero and heroine meets face to face in their book. It might be a “cute meet” or an “omnious meet.” But the first time is magical for both the couple and for their author. My favorite “meet” is anything but cute. In Only Scandal Will Do, the heroine has just been auctioned off to the hero for a night’s pleasure in a brothel. When he comes to take possession of his “goods” he finds he’s gotten more than he bargained for. 🙂

Someone fumbled with the door. She recognized the scratchy voice of the shorter kidnapper even through the wood, and darted toward the washstand.

The door opened as Kat skidded to a halt in front of a tall, cloaked and masked form.

One glimpse of the monstrous figure sent her scream echoing in the small room. She fled backward until she splayed against the wall, trapped. The dark shape advanced with frightening speed, cape billowing, the golden mask of a lion’s head glinting in the candlelight.

Flattened against the cold plaster as the towering apparition rushed toward her, she willed herself to vanish through the wall like a ghost. It reached a finger out and stroked her hair. A normal hand, thank God. The arm that disappeared into the black folds was clothed in dark red fabric of excellent quality. He was just a man. She lifted her chin and forced her eyes to meet his.

“Who are you, sir?”

“Your master, slave.”

Harsh words cloaked in a voice of deep velvet. A shiver of dread raced down Katarina’s body, as much from the words as from his tone. She gathered her courage and replied, “I am nobody’s slave. There has been a dreadful mistake.”

“I think not, my lovely. I paid a small fortune for your ownership this evening. Make no mistake about that.” He continued to stroke her hair and she twisted her head to the side. His mouth below the half mask twitched into an insolent smile. “I am pleased, however, that you possess courage as well as beauty.” His fingers touched her cheek. “The mask hid the slave’s wealth well.”

She jerked away. “You may have paid for a slave, sir, but what you find in this room is a lady in distress. Will you prove a gentleman or a rogue?”

“A lady in distress?” He laughed and straightened. “How did a lady come to find herself on display at an auction, scandalously clad in a transparent Greek costume, in Madame Vestry’s House of Pleasure?”

“House of Pleasure?” she squeaked.

“Where else would such a thing occur?” The man’s amusement seemed to deepen at her indignation. “And there will certainly be pleasure here tonight, slave.”

He ran a hand slowly down her arm, fingers trailing silkily against her bare flesh. Mouth agape at such a liberty, she slapped the hand away and ran for the door. With a long arm, he snared the diaphanous folds of her gown. The material strained against her body. Kat froze lest it rip, exposing her completely. Cursing her own folly for choosing such a costume, she swung around to face her captor.

Nobody Said It Would Be Easy: Guest Blogger Christine Warner

Today I’m welcoming back to the Journal Christine Warner with her newest release, Two-Timing The Boss. Christine was here several months ago promoting her fabulous debut novel Some Like It In Handcuffs, so I’m sure you’re going to love her thoughts today on just how difficult that road to publication is for authors.

Nobody said it’d be easy…

I have to admit that when I started writing with dreams of publication I had no idea what I was really getting into.

The select few friends and family who knew of my dream encouraged me, rooted for me, cheered me on when the going got tough. Through rejections, failures, fears and uncertainty they stood by my side. And they were also there for the triumphs, jubilation, thrills and whoops of joy!

But through it all, one thing remained a constant. Nobody promised me it would be easy.

And that darn Nobody hit the nail on the head…lol…it’s not easy. Many non-writers believe you just come up with a story and get it down on paper, or type it on your word document…or whatever you use—how hard can it be? You can whip out a best seller in a week, two if you are struggling for time. HAHA…don’t I wish?

There is so much more work and effort and skill involved. The learning process is never-ending. POV, plotting, outlines, dialogue, junk or filler words, show vs tell…even well established authors say they are in a constant state of learning—and if you aren’t, your writing will grow stale.

What if you have a day job on top of your writing? There is nothing easy about juggling two professions. Personally, I go from worrying about schedules to worrying about writing time, verifying insurance to triple checking—or more—word choices. Then I have to deal with finding the right thing to wear, to throwing on the first t-shirt and scrub pants I find…lol. And of course I have to contend with applying make-up to making sure I describe my heroine and especially my hero so readers can visualize them. I’m not even going to get into discussing plots and conflicts! Whew 🙂

Now don’t get me wrong, I’m not complaining. I love writing. I love coming up with stories and characters and settings. The dialogue, conflicts and ESPECIALLY the happily ever after. I couldn’t ask for anything more. It’s the perfect job 🙂

But once again I’m reminded that Nobody said it’d be easy. If you are a writer, it’s in your blood, a constant 24-7 friend—and sometimes foe—and if you are a reader, I bet you have similar feelings.

Today, I’d like to share my latest labor of love with you. Two-Timing the Boss is a sexy, contemporary romance featuring heroine Farah Smith and super sexy hero Keller Donovan.

These damn shoes would be the death of her. She could read the headlines now: Penniless P.A. Falls to her Death while on Job Interview.

Almost to her destination, with no more mishaps, her confidence surfaced. Okay, maybe mastering this heel thing wouldn’t be such a big deal. Her steps became light, almost bouncy. Although she sensed Keller Donovan behind her, she didn’t let it deter her feeling of success. She stepped onto the large black and red area rug, less than ten feet from her target. The leather chairs.

“Oh!” Farah’s spiky heel caught on the edge of the expensive rug. Her legs shook and she shot her arms out from her sides, circling them like a bird about to take flight. She fought to regain balance inside the ridiculous stilts strapped to her feet. A brawl to the death. Over when she looked down to see the rug coming up to kiss her face. She threw out her hands, sucked in a breath and closed her eyes, scrunching her face as she prepared for impact.

But nothing happened. There were stars all right, and a blazing jolt of electricity shot from her toes, up her legs, through her body and exited with the small gasp which escaped her lips. Somehow Keller Donovan had grabbed her around the waist before she met the floor.

Heat burned her cheeks. He may have saved her body from bruises, but her ego, and whatever confidence she’d walked in with had shattered.

“Let’s not have an accident before your health benefits kick in.” His breath tickled her ear from behind. Chills hugged her backbone.

His touch released an unsettling flutter in her abdomen. She sucked in her stomach from the pressure of his strong arms wrapped around her middle, afraid to breathe.

Interview With Author Liz Grace Davis

Today I’m interviewing Liz Grace Davis who is on tour with her recent release Chocolate Aftertaste. Please welcome Liz to Jenna’s Journal.

Hi, Liz. So nice of you to stop by today and answer a few questions about your current release.

Tell us a little bit about your new release Chocolate Aftertaste.

Chocolate Aftertaste is about Nora, a woman who has always lived her life according to her father’s expectations. Until she almost marries the wrong man just to please him. The scales fall from her eyes and she runs off to a small town (Dreara), to rediscover herself and her dreams. After a few obstacles, she finds more than just herself. She falls in love.

Chocolate Aftertaste is not simply a love story. It’s a novel that deals with real life issues, decisions, and consequences.

Do you only write in this genre? If not, what other genres/sub-genres do you write in?

No, I love to write in various genres. Chocolate Aftertaste is my second novel. My first was a YA fantasy, Tangi’s Teardrops.

What was your inspiration for this story?

Life and its twists and turns.

Titles are one of the most important things to an author. How did you come up with your title? Was this the only title, or did you have a working title as well?

Nora, my main character, escapes to a small town (Dreara) to find herself and the dreams she had lost along the way of doing what everyone expected from her. This little town is known for producing some of the best chocolate in Ireland.

Aftertaste symbolizes the consequences of the choices Nora makes while leaving in Dreara, both good and bad.

Chocolate Aftertaste was the title right from the very beginning.

I am a fanatic about my character names. Are the character names in Chocolate Aftertaste special in any way?

No, not really. I just used names I like.

What was your process for writing this book? Is this different or the same as other books you’ve written?

It wasn’t special at all. I use this process pretty much for all my books. First I conduct research for a couple of months. Then I write up to three drafts, before moving on to the dreaded editing stage. I have a wonderful editor but I don’t dump all the work on him and relax. We work as a team, editing back and forth.

Do you have plans to turn Chocolate Aftertaste into a series? Why or why not?

No, Nora’s story has been told and there’s nothing more to add.

What was the first author and book you read in this genre?

Gosh, that’s very hard to say. I’ve read way too many romantic women’s fiction novels. But I do enjoy Christy Hayes’ novels. Heart of Glass is a favorite.

Who has been the greatest influence on your writing?

I’m really not sure. I’ve read a lot of novels over the years—Nora Roberts, Jodi Picoult etc. I’m sure all the books I read had a combined influence on me that could be reflected in my writing, without me being aware of it.

If you could have one wish granted just for you (not world peace, LOL), what would you wish for?

Okay, since I can’t wish for world peace :(, I wish I could quit my job and become a full-time author.

What is the most exciting/daredevil thing you’ve ever done?

I’ll go for most exciting. That has to be getting married to the love of my life and best friend.

Nora turned her attention back to the reality in front of her. She hated arguments; sometimes she wished she could hide somewhere, just wait them out. Unfortunately, life was not like that.

She lifted her eyes to meet Liam’s. The ice in his eyes had not melted. She dropped her gaze.

Instead of flirting with her appetite, the large marinated tiger prawns made her stomach queasy, and the oriental noodles looked like neglected yarn left out in the rain. From the way he dissected his steak, Liam’s appetite was just fine. She gritted her teeth as his knife scraped the porcelain plate.

Unable to bear the silence between them, she leaned forward and whispered, “I hate it when you ignore me.”

“What do you want me to say?” He chewed the last of his food and waved for the waiter. “We’re done.”

The waiter nodded and scuttled over to remove their plates.

When the waiter was out of earshot, Nora hissed through clenched teeth, “I wasn’t done.”

Liam took a swig of water, probably wishing it were something stronger. “You didn’t look like you were hungry.”

“Stop treating me like a child,” she snapped.

“Stop acting like one.”

Nora’s cheeks heated. She contained her anger with difficulty. “That’s really insensitive.”

“What do you want from me, Nora?” A vein pulsed in his neck. “What exactly do you want me to say?”

“Say you want me to be happy.” Her eyes brimmed. “Don’t ask me to get rid of my best friend.”

He loosened his tie—and then slammed his fist on the table, knocking over Nora’s glass of water. The silver stream raced straight for her lap.

The waiter appeared as if from nowhere to replace the white tablecloth with a new one. Nora forced a smile and whispered an apology. The waiter nodded, and a minute later he left.

Ignoring the curious looks they got from the other diners, she dabbed at the moisture on her black jeans. “You can’t always explode every time I refuse to do what you want.”

Liam ignored her. “Ask to pay. I want to leave.”

Nora flinched, but abided. Paying wasn’t so bad—so long as it was fair. On their first and second date, he paid. On their third and a few more after that, they went Dutch. After one year, he asked her to pay for an occasional meal until it became an unspoken arrangement between them. The only thing Liam had paid for himself in three years was her engagement ring.

This snippet takes place shortly after the excerpt I posted in Sweet Saturday Sample yesterday. Lady Katarina and the Marquess of Dalbury have met “by chance” at a ball. Katarina is less than impressed with the man who bought her at the House of Pleasure.

The musicians chose that moment to tune up for the next set and he asked, “Will you dance the next with me?”

Despite his pleading look, she chuckled and shook her head, saying “Lord Dalbury, there is nothing you could say that would compel me to dance with you.” She pulled her hand free just as Jack presented himself to her.

“Well, Kat, will you do me the honor of this dance?”

“I am sorry, Lord Manning,” Dalbury interrupted, before she could even open her mouth, “but I am afraid I have just engaged your charming sister as my partner for this set.” Dalbury smiled winningly at Jack.

Sweet Saturday Sample: 9/08/12 Only Scandal Will Do

Before she sails back to Virginia, Katarina agrees to a night out on the town with her brother. They end the night at a ball given by Lord and Lady Braeton.

Lady Braeton steered Kat toward several young swains with the purpose of making introductions. Kat was flattered at the attention, as she had been all night. First her brother had insisted they go to Lady Grangerly’s crush, then Lady Harcourt’s rout, and now the Braeton’s ball. Everywhere she was introduced, complimented, made to feel a welcome part of ton society. She accepted a glass of champagne from one of the young men she’d just met. If only March fifteenth had been a dream, life would be very sweet right now.

Jack was still talking to Lord Braeton, but another young man, taller than Jack and rather lean under his excellently cut green velvet coat, had joined the two men. Kat turned her head away and appraised him from the corner of her eye. Dark blond hair, or maybe golden brown. And a well-muscled leg. He must be part of this horsey set Jack had told her about. A fine figure of a man. Why was she now taking notice of men when she was bound for one three thousand miles away? She smiled at the notion.

Jack motioned her to return to him and handed her glass to a passing servant. As she neared the group, the young man in green glanced up and stopped, seemed arrested at the sight of her. His eyes widened. Had they already met? His face seemed familiar. Something about the chin, perhaps?

She was almost upon the group when the young man finished turning toward her. He stared at her with eyes so dark brown they were almost black. Three thin, purplish scars marred his left cheek.

The floor of the ballroom buckled beneath Katarina’s feet and Lord Braeton’s hand shot out to steady her. The music stopped and her tortured breathing sounded harsh in her ears. She supposed her face paled, for her hands grew numb with cold and she swallowed convulsively several times, trying with all her hard-earned discipline not to vomit before the assembly. She clasped her hands to stop them from shaking.

Jack looked inquisitively at her but said only, “Lady Katarina Fitzwilliam, I wish to make known to you the Marquess of Dalbury.”

“A chance meeting brings them together.” But is it really chance?

Welcome Blog Tour Guest Lia Davis and Ravished Before Sunrise

I am so pleased to welcome Lia Davis today as guest blogger on Jenna’s Journal. She’s got a real treat for us, talking about writing erotic and her recent release Ravished Before Sunrise.

When I started my writing career, I never thought I’d venture down the erotic romance road. I had never read it before and was among those who thought erotic romance was all sex. But during my research of the different genres of romance I discover that was far from the truth.

Erotic romance is romance with hotter and more frequent sex scenes with explicit language. But the main plot still focuses on the romance between the couple and has a happily ever after, or, in some cases in series, a happy for now ending.

Ravished Before Sunrise is my first erotic romance. It won’t be my last. J Since writing it and going through the edits, I found I can’t not write erotic sex scenes. I love the sensuality and the connection between the couple and the freedom of writing it. I’m free to use words that make some people blush. In fact they would make me blush to speak out loud. LOL. That’s what is so great about writing. I can create worlds and scenes that I would never see or do.

Emalee’s pulse raced as she drummed her fingers on her desk and searched the website. A giddiness
she hadn’t known since senior prom ran through her. The site claimed unlimited possibilities, a chance
for adventure. Could they mean it? Because she’d already seen things beyond what humans deemed
possible. Hell, her whole existence was unimaginable.

Her life had taken a lonesome turn when a friend she hadn’t seen since high school noted how much
younger than the rest of her classmates she looked. Her long-lasting youth had become a liability.
Drawing too much attention to her unusual gift wouldn’t prove wise. In some cases, it could get her

Blog Tour Special Guest: Erykah Wyck ~ Write What You Know

Today I’m welcoming fellow Decadent Publishing erotic author Erykah Wyck to Jenna’s Journal as she tours her newest release Night of the Doms, part of Decadent Publishing’s Edge series.

Erykah’s going to talk about one of the principle rules of writing–write what you know.

Number one rule of thumb in writing, for me anyway, is write what you know. Although I love places like Japan or Venice I have never been there personally thus it would be hard for me to write about the places. I could research and read up on the area but then it would lake in my writing (I won’t speak for other) a personal touch. There is something about being able to talk about shops down certain streets or the flavor of the place and its people.

The same goes for the BDSM lifestyle. If you have never felt the sting of a whip against your bare skin, however light or hard, it would be hard to explain and understand what the appeal could possibly be. And certainly it’s not a lifestyle for everyone…after all variety is the spice of life.

I had an editor once tell me how much she hated reading romance and I thought how can you edit something to the genre if you don’t read it or even like it? How fair is that to the readers or the author? So my advice to authors is write what you like and what you know. Research it the best way you can and readers read what you enjoy don’t let anyone sway you from reading what brings a smile to your face. It doesn’t matter if it’s sweet or erotic. Nice thing about e-books is no can see your cover.
