Sweet Saturday: 03/02/13 Betrothal ~ “The Choice”

Welcome back to Sweet Saturday Sample!  All excerpts here are rated PG-13 or milder.

Here’s another sample from my medieval WIP, Time Enough to Love:  Book 1 ~ Betrothal. My editor is working hard on it, so I’m hoping for a release date sometime this spring.

Disclaimer:  This work is still going through the editing process, so please forgive any flaws.

Betrothal with Logo

This series is set in England and France in 1348.  Part 1, Betrothal, takes place at the court of King Edward III.

This excerpt comes just after last Sunday’s 8 sentences (If you’d like to read them, they are here.)  Alyse is discussing her possible choices for the Round Table knights and ladies she and Geoffrey might play in the coming procession.

“What about Sir Tristan?” Lady Anne ventured another opinion. “Quite a bold knight. And Lady Isolde was beautiful.”

“But what a scandalous relationship, Anne!” Alyse’s indignant voice drew smiles from the other ladies. “Isolde was married to King Mark.”

“But Tristan married an Isolde too. You could be her. Of course they did not have a very happy marriage, but they were married.” Anne’s snide tone echoed her sour face, her mouth puckered in disdain.

Without a doubt her chambermate once again waxed jealous and was trying to bait her. Well, she had become used to ignoring the girl by now. “I had actually thought about Sir Erec and Lady Enid,” she ventured instead, looking to the Princess for her approval.

Joanna nodded, then frowned and asked, “Why Sir Erec, Alyse? He is one of the minor knights, is he not?”

“Oh no, Your Highness. Sir Erec is second only to Sir Gawain as the best knight at the Round Table. And he falls in love with Enid, marries her and spends so much time with her the other knights say she has bewitched him and his prowess has waned. So they go on an adventure together and he proves to her that his prowess is as great as ever.”

“Well, Alyse, I can certainly see why you would choose that couple. Trying to make your marriage fit the legend?” Anne sniggered, earning a stern glance from the princess.

“Lady Anne,” Princess Joanna admonished the girl, “you should look to Alyse as a model of behavior in this matter for she is thinking how to put Sir Geoffrey into the best possible position before the king and the court.” Joanna nodded approvingly at her. “I certainly commend your choice, Alyse. I believe Sir Geoffrey will be pleased with it as well. He obviously trusted you greatly to give you this important task, and I think his judgment sound in doing so. Your choice will confirm that you will be a good helpmeet to him.”

“I thank Your Highness for your most kind words.” Her face heated again at the fulsome praise. “I pray that Sir Geoffrey agrees with you.”

Spotlight: Sharon Cullen and The Notorious Lady Anne

Today I’m spotlighting my good friend and fellow historical author Sharon Cullen’s most recent release The Notorious Lady Anne.  A swashbuckling romance on the high seas–just the thing to brighten your spring!

USS ChesapeakeNavy Art Collection

USS Chesapeake
Navy Art Collection

Blurb for The Notorious Lady Anne:

Nicholas Addison, celebrated captain of the Blackwell Shipping Fleet, has agreed to take Mrs. Emmaline Sutherland aboard the Pride and ferry the raven-haired beauty across the Atlantic on what he imagines will be a routine trip. But when the ship is attacked by pirates, the seemingly innocent passenger is revealed to be none other than the infamous marauder Lady Anne, whose name strikes fear in the hearts of sailors everywhere—and whose seductive wiles commandeers Nicholas’s affections.   Lady Anne, a legend of the high seas, has spent the last eleven years plotting revenge against her father, the owner of Blackwell Shipping. She’s targeted the Pride in hopes of plundering its captain’s company secrets. But beneath her fierce courage and bitter determination, Anne has the delicate heart of a woman—a heart that cannot help falling for Nicholas. Now Anne must make a difficult choice: bring down Blackwell or surrender to love.

Excerpt:

He wrapped his arms around her and held her to him, anchoring her in place. Even if she wanted to move, he probably wouldn’t let her, and the thought was freeing. She stopped9780345540058_p0_v3_s260x420 fighting and relaxed into him with a sigh, releasing all the tension from her body. She didn’t know how long they sat with him cradling her like a babe in arms, her shuddering through her breaths until she was relaxed enough to drift to sleep again.

He felt good, his hard chest beneath her cheek, her ear pressed to his beating
heart, his strong arms wrapped around her as if he’d fight the world to protect
her. She snuggled closer, even though they couldn’t get any closer.

His chest rose and fell in even, reassuring breaths.

“Emmaline.” He whispered her name and she lifted her head to find their faces
close, and their lips even closer.

“Devil take it,” he muttered, before his lips descended on hers.

She’d feared her memories of their first kiss were highly exaggerated. She
was wrong. He was everything she remembered and much more. Tender, yet
commanding, taking what he wanted and giving tenfold in return.

He boarded the deck of her resistance, not with grappling hooks that tore into
her, but with the calm assurance of the most respected pirate. He would get what
he came for, damn those who resisted.

She didn’t resist. Like the captain of the merchant vessel her crew attacked, she
allowed Captain Nicholas Addison to take what he wanted, with the hope that
when all was said and done, he’d leave her with enough to survive.

Weekend Writing Warriors: 02/24/13 Betrothal: “Choices”

Welcome back to the Weekend Writing Warriors again. I’m so enjoying seeing my old friends and finding new authors. Hope you all have a great hop!

Betrothal with Logo

Today you get more from Betrothal, my medieval romance set in the 14th century.  These sentences show what Alyse has been doing while Geoffrey is having his crisis ( if you want to see what happened up to this point, check out yesterday’s post from Sweet Saturday)   If you’d like to catch up, you can read some of the posts from last week here.  In this snippet, Alyse is telling Princess Johanna and her waiting women about her news from Geoffrey.

She tried not to smile too broadly, lest she seem boastful, but could not keep the satisfaction out of her voice. “Sir Geoffrey has asked me to choose which knight and lady we are to portray.”

The room buzzed like an excited hive at her words, each lady expressing an opinion about who Alyse should choose.

“Oh, choose Sir Lancelot, Alyse, with you as Elaine.”

“Anne, you know Prince Edward will be Lancelot.”

“What about Sir Perceval?” Maurya reminded her.

“Sir Perceval could be a good choice,” Alyse admitted, “but he is sometimes portrayed as uncouth or loutish. I would not want Sir Geoffrey seen as such.”

If you want more, please come back next week! 🙂  Right now, you can click here to hop on to more Writing Warrior posts!  And thanks for coming by!

Sweet Saturday: 02/23/13 Betrothal ~ “Dread”

Welcome back to Sweet Saturday Sample!  All excerpts here are rated PG-13 or milder.

Here’s another sample from my medieval WIP, Time Enough to Love:  Book 1 ~ Betrothal. My editor is working hard on it, so I’m hoping for a release date sometime this spring.

Disclaimer:  This work is still going through the editing process, so please forgive any flaws.

Betrothal with Logo

This series is set in England and France in 1348.  Part 1, Betrothal, takes place at the court of King Edward III.

This excerpt comes just after last Sunday’s 8 sentences (If you’d like to read them, they are here.)  Thomas is rather pleased with the choice of lady and knight he is to play.  He is less happy to find that the decision of Geoffrey’s role no longer rests with Geoffrey.

“You had best recant your offer and choose someone sensible yourself.” With a final disgusted glare at his friend, Thomas hastened toward the king, going forward to accept his assigned placement in the procession.

Geoffrey stared after him, more than a little alarmed by his friend’s words. His gesture in allowing Alyse to choose their roles for the procession had simply been another attempt at chivalry, yet now that decision seemed reckless. Suddenly, he doubted her judgment and his own in allotting her the task. He heartily wished he could recall his words, no matter the delight they had inspired in her. Should he go to her and retract his offer? Geoffrey groaned at the thought. He could not go back on his word. Could he at least seek her out to find the direction of her thoughts?

Dread at the coming encounter stole through his heart as he strode from the room, leaving the courtiers still avidly discussing the coming festivities.

Excerpt:

At thirteen, I was too old for most people to consider adopting. No matter how hard Mary looked, she couldn’t find me a foster home. I went from having everything to having nothing. My parents weren’t well off. They were just your average middle-income family with a mortgage. Once the house was sold and all the debts were paid, I wasn’t left with much. There was just enough money to buy a second-hand car when I was old enough and two suitcases full of personal possessions, including a few photo albums. That was all my thirteen years of life added up to: two suitcases.

My first few weeks at Abbott’s were probably the worst of my life. I spent my days just going through the motions at school. At night, I would cry in bed until sleep finally claimed me. After about three weeks of feeling as if I was drowning in a never-ending pit of despair, I met Anthony. I felt the bed dip behind me one night as I was lying on my side and sobbing particularly hard. I was so upset I didn’t immediately register that it meant someone was lying with me. Then I felt an arm wrap around me and heard a soothing voice in my ear telling me everything was going to be okay.

When I woke up the following morning, I rolled over to see just who had climbed into bed with me. A skinny boy with short brown hair grinned at me.

“Anthony Scott.” He held his hand out.

“Elise Morgan,” I replied. “Thanks for last night.”

“Ain’t nothing.”

We talked for a little while longer, getting to know one another. Anthony was the same age as me, but had been at Abbott’s since he was six. His parents were drug addicts, which caused his removal from their care. After telling him how sorry I was that had happened, I explained my story. It was still so hard to talk about, but I got through it and only cried a little bit.

After that day, Anthony and I were inseparable. We were the best of friends. We did everything together. When I tried ballet, he did too, no matter how much teasing he got from the other boys. When he took up guitar, so did I, even though I sucked at it. Barely a day went by that we didn’t see or speak to each other at least a hundred times. I doubt I would have survived my teenage years if it weren’t for my best friend.

Though the days were fairly easy to survive, the nights were always tough. Curled up in bed alone, the reality would hit the hardest. Memories of families lost and dreams of what could have been plagued each of our thoughts. We spent many a night in each other’s beds providing comfort. Those were always the nights I slept best.

For five years, it was Anthony and me against the world.

All that changed senior year. Anthony and I had both been working toward Cornell. We were in all the same AP classes and had the same GPA. We both applied for scholarships, knowing that was the only way we’d ever get to go to college. When I got a scholarship and he didn’t, reality came crashing down around us. I told him I wasn’t going without him, that it had been our dream. Anthony, always the strong one, told me I needed to go follow my dreams, that I deserved to go to Cornell, and he wasn’t going to let me waste my one chance to get the hell out of San Francisco.

After graduation, we agreed to have one last hoorah over the summer before heading off on our separate paths. We had the best time. We found a little apartment in the city. It was really only big enough for one person, but since it would just be Anthony’s apartment come fall, I didn’t mind it being a bit cramped.

We did everything we ever wanted to do together that summer. We visited museums and art galleries, rode the cable cars, and spent hours upon hours running around Fisherman’s Wharf. We even went to the beach and the zoo.

All the while, our separation loomed. It was constantly present in our thoughts, as if we knew it was going to be our last summer together. We were heading in two different directions come September and might never see one another again.

On a sunny day in the middle of August, I packed my two suitcases and a duffle bag into the back of the beat-up truck I purchased with the money left from Mom and Dad’s estate.

There, in front of Anthony’s apartment building, I said good-bye to my best friend and the closest thing I had to family. Hugging him tightly, I resisted as best I could the tears threatening to fall.

We said I love you and promised to stay in touch and visit when we could. With a kiss on the cheek and yet another hug, he told me to go spread my wings and become the beautiful butterfly he had always known me to be.

At her nod, he ran his hands across her smooth, rounded buttocks and up her back. She arched into his caress, and he knelt behind her, cupped her full breasts, fingers open so the nipples peeked through. Slowly, he slid his fingers closed, pinching her nipples, teasing them until they formed hard peaks against his palms.

The subject of historical accuracy just reared it’s head for me this weekend, so this blog post seemed rather appropriate. And I so agree with the answers or guidelines Anne Cleeland gives! Do you have questions about how far to go with historical accuracy?

Today’s guest is my writing ‘twin.’ I say that because we seem to do everything together; we got agents, sold, got our covers, and will release our debut novels, all within a month of each other! She’s an amazing author – remember, you heard of her here first!

TaintedAngel[1]Anne has agreed to give away an advance copy of her Regency novel, Tainted Angel , due out in June, to one lucky commenter! (is that a gorgeous cover, or what?)

Take it away, Anne!

I’d like to thank the great and mighty Laura Drake for allowing me this opportunity to introduce myself—thanks a million, Laura!

I have two series debuting this year, a historical fiction series and a contemporary mystery series.  I’ve attended a few panels on the knotty problem of how accurate you have to be when writing historicals, so for those of you who read or write historical novels…

Weekend Writing Warriors: 02/17/13 Betrothal: The Road to Disgrace

(If you’re looking for my Historical Hop post, it’s here.  Totally different snippet from a totally different historical work, the third book in the Scandal series.)

I’m back with Weekend Writing Warriors again. I saw many old SSS friends and lots of new ones last week, so I’m sticking with this group! 🙂

Betrothal with Logo

Today you get the next sentences from Betrothal, my medieval romance set in the 14th century.  These sentences come immediately following my Sweet Saturday Sample from yesterday.  If you’d like to catch up, you can read that here.  In this snippet Thomas explains why Geoffrey’s decision to let Alyse choose their parts smacks of disaster.

“I wanted to please her, Thomas,” Geoffrey said, shifting uneasily. “Her demeanor toward me has warmed a bit these past two days, and I aimed to fuel that flame with the ride in the procession and the choice of knight and lady. It seemed a little thing at the time.” He glanced at his friend anxiously. “Think you that she will choose unwisely?”

“She has been little at court, so how is she to know that it would be unseemly for you as a lower ranked knight to portray a figure of great consequence from the Round Table? Mark me, Geoffrey, if she chooses one of the more important knights, she will be seen as blatantly trying to raise your status. If you long for disgrace, that is the way to go about it.”

2nd Historical Blog Hop 02/17/13 Only A Mistress Will Do

Welcome back to the Historical Blog Hop!  Historical romance in just 10 sentences.  Good enough to get you hooked, bad enough to make you want more. 🙂

The Rake's Progress: The Orgy by William Hogarth

The Rake’s Progress: The Orgy by William Hogarth

Today’s treat is a WIP that I’ve only just gotten started on, but I thought, let me change it up and give you something completely different.  This snippet is from Book 3 of my House of Pleasure series, Only A Mistress Will Do.  It is completely unedited and to my recollection, never before seen.  This is the beginning–in which a lady, down on her luck, must make a very hard decision.  Hope you enjoy!

“Miss Carlton?”

The low-pitched voice of Amorina Vestry made Violet jump to her feet.  On edge from the moment she entered the house, she now wobbled on unsteady legs as she tried to avoid looking at the lewd décor of the downstairs receiving room.  But walls painted with nude scenes, a pair of obscene candlesticks on the mantle, and a ceiling medallion sculpted to resemble a woman’s breast meant the only place she could turn her eyes without blushing was the crimson red carpet.  Even the furniture, carved into indecent shapes, had made Violet cringe when she sat down on it.

“My manservant said you wished to see me?”  The small woman’s dark eyes took in every detail of Violet’s appearance from what used to be her second-best hat to the rumpled and stained deep-purple dress to her scuffed black boots.

On the tip of her tongue to say that of course she did not wish to see the madam of a brothel, Violet paused and took a deep breath.  She had come to the absolute end of her resources the night before.  No money, no shelter, no food, no friends—these circumstances had driven her to Madame Vestry.

If you want more of my historical snippets, come back next week! 🙂  Thanks for coming by today. Please click here to hop on to more historical posts this week!
