Sweet Saturday ~ 5/11/13 Speed Date: Lucky #8?

I’m back with more of the new WIP, Speed Date.  It’s a short story I have hopes of turning into a novella or novel.

This excerpt is from where I left off last week, including the eight from Weekend Writing Warriors. Roberta is up to lucky number 8.

Five dates later I had the formula down pat:  your name, my name, where you’re from, what you do for a living, do you party, what kind of car do you drive or what’s you hobby?  One guy asked if I believed in a Supreme Being.  I had to restrain myself from answering, “Only Diana Ross.”

Bong!

I looked around.  My card showed this was only date number eight.  Did we get to take a break or did we have to do this as a marathon?  I suddenly remembered an old movie—They Shoot Horses, Don’t They?

I shook away the thought and Dater Number Eight sat down.

Henry VIII by Joos van Cleve

Henry VIII

Another blonde, my least favorite hair color, although it wasn’t that light white blonde that I despise.  His was more of a burnished metal, the color of old, well-worn gold coins.  Red-gold is my absolute favorite hair color for a man—the coloring of the young Henry VIII.  My ideal man, actually, is Henry VIII.  In his early years he was gorgeous, as attested in Holbein’s famous portrait.  The pencil-thin auburn beard defining his determined jaw made me shiver every time I saw it.

This guy, Number Eight, was no Henry VIII.  I looked candidly at him, appraising.  He smiled back, showing brilliant white teeth.  Blinding white.  If the room were suddenly plunged into darkness we could use his teeth to find our way out.  His smile was mesmerizing, though.

Maybe he could be Henry VIII.  The hair color was close, his jaw square and determined.  No pencil-thin beard, but he could be encouraged to grow one.  He had the athletic build of the young Henry, wide, well-muscled shoulders and chest that showed through his white Polo shirt.  But was he also well spoken, well read, well endowed—with wit and intelligence as was the Tudor king?

I had four and a half minutes to find out.  And Number Eight intrigued me.

“Hi.  I’m Roberta.”  Smile back.  Make eye contact.450px-Young_blond_man

“Bertie?”

“Excuse me?”

“Do they call you Bertie?”  That charming bright-white smile flashed again.

“No one ever has.”

“I asked because you look more like a Bertie than a Roberta.”

“You think so?”  Definitely intrigued.

“My name’s Gabriel.”

“Not Gabe?”  It was my turn to tease.

“Never.”  That grin again.  It was infectious.  “Are you as bored by all of this as I am?”

This man not only thought outside the box he lived outside it.  Live dangerously, Roberta.  “Actually I was, until now.”

“Good answer.  You want to get out of here when the gong sounds again?  Go grab some dinner, maybe?”

Talk about a speed date.  But I was hooked.  Or rather, Bertie was.  “You don’t think they’ll mind if we leave?”

He shrugged.  “We paid them.”  His gaze took me in, head to toe.  “I think I’ve gotten my money’s worth.”

Speed dating just became a whole new ballgame. 🙂

Disclaimer:  The picture of the guy is a representation only.  He looks a tad young for Gabriel, but otherwise I thought it a good likeness of how I imagine him.

I hope you enjoyed that little snippet.  There will be more from Speed Date tomorrow on Weekend Writing Warriors!  But for now, you should check out some more Saturday Samples.  Thanks for coming by!

I is for Incest

Yes, a major taboo subject for romance writers!  But I wanted to be bold and bring it out in the open for a minute, and ask some questions about how you view the concept of incest.

I always found it fascinating that in many ancient societies–the Egyptians, Incans,

Table of Kindred and Affinity Located on the west wall of the inside of St Helen, Little Cawthorpe Church.
by Ian Petersen

Hawaiians and others–royal families practiced incest as a matter of course.  Even the British royal family has intermarried with cousins for generations.

So how close does the connection have to be for it to be considered incest?

Certainly parental and sibling couplings are incestuous.  But what about step-parents or step-children?  I teach drama and in both Phaedre and Desire Under the Elms a step-parent (mother) falls in love with her step-son.

And what of the marriage of Woody Allen and Soon-Yi Previn, his girlfriend’s adopted daughter?  Incestuous or not?

Is it an incestuous relationship if there is no blood bond?  This question has generated lots of wonderful discussions in class because there are so many opinions on it.

So would such a plot device be considered taboo in romance writing?  Are there in fact romance novels with this type of plot?

What do you think?

He touched something there among the curls and a low moan rolled out of her throat as streaks of fire blazed between her thighs.

No one had told her what a man’s touch would do to her, or that there was a hill to crest. She fought now to storm that hill, straining against his hand, following his rhythm–he could do what he willed for they desired as one.

Hope you enjoyed that little piece of medieval mischief. LOL

WEEKEND WRITING WARRIORS

Welcome back to the Weekend Writing Warriors again. I’m so enjoying seeing my old friends and finding new authors. Hope you all have a great Sunday!

Sweet Saturday ~ 5/04/13 Speed Date: Roberta’s 1st Date

I’m back with more of the new WIP, Speed Date.  It’s a short story I have hopes of turning into a novella or novel.

This excerpt is from where I left off last week, including the eight from Weekend Writing Warriors. Roberta goes on her first speed date.

450px-Rupert_Everett_in_July_2007George, a sandy blonde with greenish eyes, kept clicking a ballpoint pen as he spoke.  “So, have you done this before?”

“Never.”  I tried to smile as if that didn’t make me sound like I was finally desperate enough to try anything.  “Are you from the area?”

“No, I transferred six months ago from Ft. Belvoir.  But I’m originally from Oklahoma.  You?”

“Yep.  Born and raised in Tidewater.  I live on the Eastern Shore.”  I was supposed to tell these men the truth, right?  Concern flared.  What if he was a serial killer?  At least he didn’t know where on the Eastern Shore.

“What’s your MOS?”  I saw a flicker of surprise?  respect? appear in his eyes.  I knew his jargon.  I might actually be salvageable.

“Counter-terrorism.”  Oh, Jesus.  TMD—Total Military Drama.  “What do you do?”

“I’m manager for an apartment complex.”  I’m as boring as they come.  Please go away.

“Do you like to party?  Know all the great hot spots around here?”

Translation:  do you know where the party is or are you a total nerd?

“I’ve heard Contraband is the bomb in Norfolk.” Crap!  Bomb is not the word you want to use with someone in CT.  But he didn’t go into ninja mode, so I ventured a question.  “What type of music do you like?  Something like fusion jazz?”

He gave me the stricken look of a deer in headlights.

Bong!

I made my face slacken a trifle.  “Aww.  Five minutes goes by too fast, doesn’t it?

He stood.  “Yes, well, um..nice to meet you…uh…Roberta.”

At least he did remember it.  Finally.  “You too, George.”

As he moved on to his next table, I made a sharp flick though the number one

on what I termed my “dance card.”  One down, nineteen to go.  Twenty dates in two hours.

Considering my current track record was three dates in two years—dates, mind you, not relationships—I was in for an extraordinarily long dry spell starting tomorrow.  Cramming twenty dates into one evening was just tempting Fate to decree no more until mid-June 2028.  At least that meant I could get a date for my 50th birthday party.  Yippee!

Meanwhile, date number two sat down in front of me.  Tall, thin, curly dark hair, prominent Adam’s apple.

“Hi, my name is Stephen.”

“Hi, I’m Roberta.”

I will never drink again, so help me God.

I hope you enjoyed that little snippet.  There will be more from Speed Date tomorrow on Weekend Writing Warriors!  But for now, you should check out some more Saturday Samples.  Thanks for coming by!

H is for Haggis

I am sure there are many things H could stand for, but as I was searching for a topic this week I thought I might want to change things up a bit.  And for no reason at all Haggis–that peculiar Scottish treat–came to mind.

Scottish Haggis

Scottish Haggis

What is haggis?  Traditionally it is a pudding or sausage made of the “pluck” (lungs, heart, and liver) of a lamb or sheep, mixed with oatmeal, onion, suet, and seasonings, stuffed into the stomach of a sheep and cooked.  It is often served with “neeps and tatties,” or turnips and potatoes as we might say.

Haggis with neeps and tatties

Haggis with neeps and tatties

Ummm. Tasty.

Haggis is usually thought of as a traditional Scottish treat, but according to my research its origins are kind of murky.  Mention of a haggis-like dish can be found in Homer’s Odessey  –“a man before a great blazing fire turning swiftly this way and that a stomach full of fat and blood, very eager to have it roasted quickly.”  The Oxford Companion to Food states that the ancient Romans made a type of viand similar to haggis.  And in 2009, historian Catherine Brown found a recipe for the Scottish meal in a 1615 cookbook called The English Hus-Wife.

The Scots, however, are having none of that.  Although first mention of haggis in Scotland does not come until 1747, Robert Patrick, a haggis maker, said in an article for BBC News, that claiming haggis as an English dish is tantamount to the Dutch and Chinese claiming to have invented golf.  “Anything that’s to do with Scotland, everyone wants to get a part of.”

The most famous reference to the haggis is Robert Burns’ poem, “Address to a  Haggis,” which begins:

Fair fa’ your honest, sonsie face,         sonsie=jolly
Great chieftain o’ the puddin-race!
Aboon them a’ ye tak your place,       Aboon=above
Painch, tripe, or thairm:                      painch=stomach; thairm=intestine                                 Weel are ye wordy o’ a grace                                                                                                          As lang’s my arm.

Robert Burns "Address to a Haggis"

“Address to a Haggis”

Every year Burns’ birthday, January 25, is celebrated with a Burns’ Supper where the main dish–a haggis of course– is piped into the dining room by bagpipers and the poem is recited before dinner is served.

Below is a traditional recipe for haggis:

Ingredients:
Set of sheep’s heart, lungs and liver (cleaned by a butcher)

Haggis at a Burns Supper

Haggis at a Burns Supper

One beef bung (intestine)
3 cups finely chopped suet
One cup medium ground oatmeal
Two medium onions, finely chopped
One cup beef stock
One teaspoon salt
½ teaspoon pepper
One teaspoon nutmeg
½ teaspoon mace

Method:
Trim off any excess fat and sinew from the sheep’s intestine and, if present, discard the windpipe. Place in a large pan, cover with water and bring to the boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for an hour or possibly longer to ensure that they are all tender. Drain and cool.

Finely chop the meat and combine in a large bowl with the suet, oatmeal, finely chopped onions, beef stock, salt, pepper, nutmeg and mace. Make sure the ingredients are mixed well. Stuff the meat and spices mixture into the beef bung which should be over half full. Then press out the air and tie the open ends tightly with string. Make sure that you leave room for the mixture to expand or else it may burst while cooking. If it looks as though it may do that, prick with a sharp needle to reduce the pressure.

Place in a pot and cover with water. Bring to the boil and immediately reduce the heat and simmer, covered, for three hours. Avoid boiling vigorously to avoid bursting the skin.

Serve hot with “champit tatties and bashit neeps” (mashed/creamed potato and turnip/swede).

Unfortunately, I have not had the “pleasure” of eating haggis.  It’s on my bucket list, however, and I’ll be hunting it down the next time I go to Scotland.

Have any of you had the good fortune to partake of this Scottish tradition?

A New House in Town: Welcome Rising Phoenix Publications

Rising Phoenix Publications

Rising Phoenix Publications

Yes, there is a new publishing house in town–sort of.  Rising Phoenix Publications is my personal publishing company, launched on April 19, 2013 to provide my self-published works with a named company and logo that would be distinctive.

The logo, created for me by my lovely editor, the talented Danielle Fine, also has a personal meaning.  The name came to me after a run of rejections from agents of some of my works.  Instead of being depressed, I kept seeing this image of the phoenix that rises from the ashes of death, whole and new again.  Thus was born my idea of a personal publishing company that would overcome the adversity of rejection.

Betrothal_1600x2400_96dpi SMASHWORDS

The first book to be published under this logo was Betrothal, Book I of my Time Enough to Love medieval romance.  (You can see the logo in the upper left hand corner of the cover.)  Betrothal is now available at Amazon, Smashwords, and     B & N

Why did I choose to self-publish Betrothal/Time Enough to Love rather than go the route of queries and traditional publication?  For the answer to that question, and to be entered to win a copy of Betrothal and my full length historical romance Only Scandal Will Do, check out my interview with Nancy Goodman on Rakes, Rogues and Romance  here.  Comment on either this blog or hers and be entered to win!

I am very happy so far with my self-publishing experience.  The control over covers, pricing, availability of sales data, editorial decisions and other factors make self-publishing an exciting and satisfying venture that I will hopefully be utilizing for many years to come.

What has been your experience with self-publication, either as an author or as a reader of indie books?
