Sweet Saturday ~ 4/27/13 Speed Date

I’m starting on a new WIP today, called Speed Date.  It’s a short story I have hopes of turning into a novella or novel.  And what’s really strange is it’s contemporary and not erotic!  Virgin territory for me. LOL  The story just came to me and I ran with it.  I guess it’s inspired in part by the fact that I’m gluten intolerant and have been “glutened” pretty badly in the past.

This excerpt is from the very beginning of Speed Date and Roberta is panicking.

What the hell am I doing here?

I looked around the large, crowded room and my grip on the Gucci shoulder bag slipped.  Sweat was probably not good for the leather.

This was what you got for drinking too much.  I had to have been drunk—three sheets to the wind drunk—to have taken this dare.  That’s what I had been.  Two margaritas more than I should have had at Rachel’s last Saturday night.  Just enough to take the damned dare when Sydney made it.

I glanced around the room again, clutching the Gucci like a shield.

I am so swearing off alcohol.

The official, a balding little man with clipboard in hand, motioned me to a nearby table.  I sat, pried the bag off my shoulder and leaned it against my leg for moral support.

Oh, God, I am so not ready for this.

Bong!

The sound of the gong deafened me as a pleasant-faced young man sat down opposite.

“Hi.  My name is George.”

“Hi.  I’m Roberta.”

I was speed dating.

I hope you enjoyed that little snippet.  There will be more from Speed Date tomorrow on Weekend Writing Warriors!  But for now, you should check out some more Saturday Samples.  Thanks for coming by!

Joust in Time–ReBlog from D’Ann Lindun And An Interview with a Knight–Reblog from Kary Rader

There’s no reblog service outside of WordPress, so I’m doing my own version. 🙂

I’m actually on two blogs today and thought I’d let everyone know:

I’m over at D’Ann Lindun’s blog today, talking about that fun and dangerous medieval pastime:  Jousting.

JOUST IN TIME

560px-Anoniem_-_Tafereel_uit_een_ridderlegende

“Jousting was one of the most popular and dramatic of entertainments during the long medieval period.  They were major events at tournaments where knights were pitted against one another for honor, for glory, and for prize money.”  To read more, click here.

I am (or rather my character is) also over at Kary Rader’s blog, being charming and putting her in the hot seat.

INTERVIEW WITH A KNIGHT

Geoffrey(1)

“(Sir Geoffrey enters.  He is a big man, about 6 ft 4” tall, with dark brown hair and sapphire blue eyes.  There is a tightness about his mouth, as if he is impatient with these proceedings, but there is also a glint of amusement in his eyes.  He wears a tight-fitting  parti-colored cotehardie and chausses, blue and burgundy)

My heart is fluttering around the website somewhere. Wow!  Ummm…Who are you? Give your full name and title/race. Do you have special abilities?

*he bows* I am Sir Geoffrey Longford, a courtier in the service of His Majesty King Edward III.  I am currently waiting to sail to Spain with the king’s daughter, Princess Joanna, as second in command of the voyage.

As a knight I have worked hard to hone my skills with the weapons of my trade—the sword and the lance.  *he smiles*  I have won tournaments both in England and in France. And I have seen real battle in the service of the king.”

To read more, please click here.

I hope to see you there!  I’m doing giveaways of a book from my back list at both sites, so come by both to enter and win!

He slid his hand smoothly down her body, sending flutterings everywhere. When he rested his hand on the tangle of curls above her closed thighs, heat streaked inward to her core and a throbbing beat began inside, so strange a feeling that embarrassment and fear reappeared.

Hope you enjoyed that little piece of medieval mischief. LOL

Spotlight on May Day Mischief by Barbara Monajem

I have a double treat for you today!  I am spotlighting a duet of books by Barbara Monajem,  under the series title May Day Mischief.  Just in time for that wonderful spring festival May Day!

The Magic of His Touch - APR 2013 - undone

The Magic of His Touch (May Day Mischief, Book 1 — available now)

England, 1804

Tired of being paraded before every eligible bachelor, Peony Whistleby decides it’s time to find her true love—through the ancient custom of rolling naked in the dew on May Day morning. But the magic goes awry when she is caught in the act—and by an entirely unsuitable man. And yet, the way his eyes linger upon her flesh ignites a sensual craving that can only be satisfied by his touch…

The Magic of His Touch is available now at Amazon, B & N, and Harlequin.

Excerpt from The Magic of His Touch:

“Get up! Get dressed!”

Peony froze in mid-roll. A strange man bounded toward her, gesturing, his voice low but urgent. She scrambled to her feet, a shriek catching in her throat.

“I won’t hurt you,” he said, but he kept on coming. Her heart clambering into her gullet, she tried to cover herself with her hands.

“Who— What—” She couldn’t get a word out.

“Don’t stand there like an idiot, girl! I already know what you look like naked.” A blush crowded up her neck and burned her cheeks. “Get your clothes on, and be quick about it.” With brisk, shooing motions he herded her toward the hawthorn where she’d left her shift and gown.

Anger swelled up, overcoming her fear. How dare he order her about? “Go away,” she said, hating how her voice trembled as she fled before him. “What are you doing here? You have no right.” A little way round the circle of meadow, she spied a horse, cropping the grass at the edge of the wood.

“You should be thankful I’m here,” he said, stopping several feet away when she reached the hawthorn. “I don’t know what foolishness you’re up to, but clearly your lover isn’t coming, and—”

“No, because you spoiled everything,” she said. Her hair had fallen out of its ribbon and stuck wetly to her face. She clawed it away, wanting to hit him. Her chance at finding love was gone. “Go away!”

He folded his arms and just stood there, scowling—and looking at her as if, underneath that frown, he was enjoying himself. “Not until you put your clothes on and be off home where you belong.”

Another flush overwhelmed her, this time of shame and misery, as she realized what he meant. He thought she’d come out here to tryst with some likely village lad, as if she were a scullery maid. And who was he, anyway? She’d never seen him before.

He was dressed like a gentleman and spoke like one, too, but he didn’t belong here.

“Who gave you the right to order me about?” she demanded. “This is private land.”

His eyes widened. “You silly little fool, I’m trying to protect you. I traveled here with a friend. To him, a naked woman is a blatant invitation. You’re lucky it’s I who came upon you and not he.”

She grabbed her shift and turned it right side out. “Stop staring at me.”

“You’re a beautiful girl without any clothes on,” he said. “I wouldn’t be much of a man if I didn’t stare.”

Bewitched by His Kiss - MAY 2013 - undone

Bewitched by His Kiss (May Day Mischief, Book 2 — available May 1)

England, 1804

Lucasta Barnes knows the folly believing in magic can lead to—and she won’t accept that her illicit tryst with a notorious rake was the result of anything more than pure lust. Or that it has bonded them together forever. Yet, she can’t deny that she yearns for just one more night in his arms…

David, Earl of Elderwood, is known as an enchanter of women, but ever since a passionate encounter with Lucasta three years ago, he desires only her. How can he convince his thoroughly practical paramour that love is the greatest magic of all?

Excerpt from Bewitched by His Kiss:

Setup: It’s late at night, and Lucasta, our heroine, fears that her cousin Peony has gone rolling naked in the dew again. She bumps into Lord Elderwood on the way out to check on her.

“Shall we go verify that Peony is safe?” Lord Elderwood’s voice was a silky dare.

“Don’t be ridiculous,” Lucasta retorted. “Alexis is a gentleman through and through.” Unlike Elderwood, who would take advantage of a woman with or without clothing. She remembered leaving the future to fate and shivered. No, this meeting was pure chance. Nothing else.

That didn’t stop every nerve in her body from coming alive and afire.

The path through the wood appeared like magic. No, not magic—just luck that they’d found it easily in the dark. She hastened onward. “But for her safety, I must make certain he is with her.”

Elderwood laughed. From ahead came a startled squeak, stifled immediately.

Urgent whispers stretched toward them, ghostly and unintelligible. Peony was talking to someone, but she didn’t sound frightened, and she hadn’t had time to disrobe. It must truly be Alexis, thank heavens. He was a reassuring sort of man. He would convince her to keep her clothes on. He would make sure she returned to the house safely.

Elderwood laughed again. “Come now, my love. Tell the truth. Don’t you want to know what Alexis is doing with your cousin?”

“Damn you,” she said too loudly, whirling back toward the orchard. She lowered her voice. “Stop laughing, for God’s sake. Have you no discretion?”

A muffled snort came from directly behind her. He must be close enough to touch her and intending to do so.

“Stupid question,” she muttered. She was at his mercy, or rather at the mercy of her own rampaging desires. She hurried forward, clutching the pistol close so he couldn’t get it, but suddenly the path petered into nothing. She must have mistaken the way in the dark; she dodged the other direction, around a massive oak she’d passed on the way in.

Blocked again, this time by a wall of undergrowth and a closed rank of trees. She whirled again and stumbled.

Lord Elderwood caught her. “Dear, dear,” he said. “Are we lost?”

“Where did the path go?” she burst out. “It was right here. I’m sure of it.”

“And now it isn’t,” Elderwood said, one arm strong around her, the other plucking the muff pistol from her hand.

She moaned. “That makes no sense at all.”

He took her chin in his hands and tipped it up. His eyes seemed to glow in the darkness. “It does, if you believe in magic.”

Bewitched by His Kiss is available for pre-order at Amazon, B & N, and Harlequin on May 1!

And to celebrate her releases and May Day, Barbara is giving away a $10.00 gift certificate to either Amazon or B & N!  Just leave a comment WITH YOUR EMAIL ADDRESS telling us about one of your May Day or springtime experiences.

HOORAY!

So, today you get the truly final 8 from Betrothal, my medieval romance set in the 14th century.   This snippet immediately follows yesterday’s Sweet Saturday Sample (view here).

“So His Majesty could set a betrothal aside?”

800px-Têtes-sculptées-du-porche-de-la-collégiale-de-Candes-Saint-MartinMaurya nodded slowly. “If there existed a compelling enough reason, yes, of course he could, but a quarrel with Sir Geoffrey would hardly qualify as such.” She captured Alyse’s gaze and her face seemed to harden. “Especially since King Edward favors the Longfords.”  She paused. “Do you not know to whom Lady Mary is now betrothed?”

Alyse shook her head, a coldness stealing through her.

“Sir Roland of Longford, Sir Geoffrey’s elder brother.”

Alyse closed her eyes and swallowed hard.

Betrothal is available at Amazon and Smashwords.  It will be available at other e-tailers shortly.

Right now, you can click here to hop on to more Writing Warrior posts!  And thanks for coming by!

Sweet Saturday: 04/20/13 Betrothal ~ “Undeterred”

Welcome back to Sweet Saturday Sample!  All excerpts here are rated PG-13 or milder.

Okay, I can’t stop myself.  Since Betrothal just released, I’m continuing with a sample from my medieval, Time Enough to Love:  Book 1 ~ Betrothal.

BETROTHAL

RELEASED ON APRIL 19!

WOOHOO!

Betrothal with Logo

This series is set in England and France in 1348.  Part 1, Betrothal, takes place at the court of King Edward III.

You can read April 14’s post here.

This excerpt takes place later that night, after Alyse and Geoffrey’s quarrel and Geoffrey and Thomas’s violent disagreement. Alyse is in the Great Hall, thinking about her options.

She could not decide who had angered her most. Geoffrey’s betrayal stung mightily, but she believed him led astray by his friend. She was more than willing to heap blame on that conceited lord, whose earlier disregard incensed her anew. Bitter memories of Lord Braeton blatantly ignoring her at court functions flooded her mind, and she winced to think how she had tried to dally with him the few times they had conversed.

Well, she had gotten the better of him last night. She smiled for the first time that day at the thought of her banter with him. He had seemed more 552px-Renaud_de_montauban_banquetrespectful of her after she had taken him down a peg. And appreciative. She recalled his appraising look after their exchange.

As if he saw me for the first time.

Alyse sat straight up on her bench. Had her spirited wordplay drawn his attention at last? Perhaps he had sown seeds of discord between her and Geoffrey out of jealousy. Perchance he was angry that she had to marry another.

Too late.

She slouched again. She was betrothed to Geoffrey. Nothing could change that. Could it? Had she ever heard of a betrothal being broken?

She glanced around the room, recalling as much gossip as possible from the past months. Had there not been talk about Lady Mary Percy and Sir Roger Delaney? One person surely knew.

“Maurya.”

llustration of an ''entremet'', a type of medieval meal entertainment, staged at a banquet given by Charles V of France

Her companion turned to her and shook her head. “’Tis too early to retire yet, Alyse. Wait a bit and I shall get John to escort you.”

“Nay, ’tis not that.” Alyse glanced at Patrick on her left and lowered her voice. “Tell me about Sir Roger’s betrothal. ’Tis no longer contracted, is it?”

Maurya met her eyes with a hard stare. “Do not think of it, Alyse. Your spat with Sir Geoffrey will blow away like a March wind. He is an honorable and chivalrous man. If you give him a chance, I believe he will make amends for his behavior.”

Alyse gazed back at her, undeterred. “They were betrothed, were they not? And now she is to wed another.”

I hope you enjoyed this latest sample from  Betrothal.   Join me tomorrow on Weekend Writing Warriors for the REAL conclusion to my excerpts from Book I of Time Enough to Love.

And be sure to click here to visit more Sweet Samples.

If you’d like to read more, Betrothal is available at Amazon and Smashwords.

G is for Geoffrey

I am extremely pleased and proud to announce that my medieval romance, Betrothal, Book One of Time Enough to Love, has released on Amazon!

To celebrate, I thought I’d introduce you all to my dashing hero. See!  G is for Geoffrey Longford.  He’s not shy, so be forewarned. 🙂

iStock_000015986829XSmall

Jenna: Hello, Sir Geoffrey. Thank you so much for stopping by the Journal today.  I thought our readers would be thrilled to be introduced to you, on the day Betrothal releases. I am sure you must be excited.  I certainly am.

Geoffrey: There is the air of a tournament about today, Lady Jenna.  You have been all atwitter since dawn.

Jenna:  Since dawn? How did you know…Geoffrey!  You are not to invade my thoughts! All right, tell everyone a bit about yourself.

Geoffrey: I am Sir Geoffrey of Longford, second son of the Earl of Longford.  I have been a knight in the service of King Edward III ever since attaining knighthood at the age of ten and eight years.  I fought along side the Earl of Derby and my friend, the Earl of Braeton, at the Battle of Crecy.  For this service I was given a manor house and lands. ‘Tis a small holding, but enough for my needs.  And for my prospective bride to be mistress over one day.

Jenna:  Excellent segue!  How did you meet Lady Alyse de Courcey?

Geoffrey: *chuckles*  We were called before the court, in the Great Hall, right in front of the king.  Then heBetrothal_1600x2400_96dpi SMASHWORDS simply presented her to me as my betrothed.  We had some *clears throat* chat, after that, and she made me promise to be her Hercules.  *grins*  I managed to accomplish that feat in short order.

Jenna: Hercules?  *eyes him up and down* Well, I’d say she got that right! What was your first thought when you saw her?

Geoffrey:  That she was the most beautiful creature I had ever beheld.  And I wanted to kiss the small mark just above the right corner of her mouth.

Jenna: What is your favorite thing about her?

Geoffrey:  I could say it is that self-same mark, for it fascinates and stirs great feelings in me.  But in truth it is simply that she is Alyse, kind, gentle, loving, and stubborn at times.  Her essence is what I truly love most.

Jenna: What is your greatest fear?

Geoffrey:  That I will lose her.

Jenna:  What is your greatest strength? Greatest weakness?

Geoffrey:  My greatest strength is my resourceful nature.  I can reason out any problem and arrive at a solution that satisfies the need.  *grins*  Ask Alyse about my solution to her Herculean task of stopping the sun in its orbit around the earth.  She was scarcely pleased with my answer to the question.

*sighs* My greatest weakness is my love for Alyse.  I fear ‘twill be my undoing.

Jenna: What is your favorite color?

Geoffrey:  Blue.  The exact shade of Alyse’s eyes.

Jenna:  If you could spend a whole day with Alyse where would you go and what would you do? Details please! *wink*

Geoffrey:  To spend an entire day alone with my lady would be a great boon indeed.  We have little time together, despite our betrothed state.  *strokes chin.* If I could have her all to myself, we would ride out from the castle, away into the woods.  Far from everyone and everything that might tear us from one another.  We would come to a clearing.  I would spread a cloth on the ground for her to sit upon.  Then I would serve her all manner of delicacies and sweetmeats.  Feeding her from my own hands.  Once she was sated, she might feed me some morsel.  I would have need of naught, save her presence.  Then we would lay in the woods and…talk.  About everything we know not about the other. *winks*  A truly resourceful man might find out much.

Jenna: He might at that.  *shakes head* If I gave you a box with three items: Bungee cord, Nutella, and a Lolly Pop, what would you do?

Geoffrey: I would ask what these curious items were and what was their purpose.

Jenna:  *smiling* Do you wear boxers or briefs?

Geoffrey: *cocks head*  I know not of what you speak, but from the merriment in your face and the place your eyes keep straying, I fear there is but the choice of chausses.

Jenna:  Okay.  *blushes* What is your favorite dessert?

Geoffrey:  *chuckles* I will be conventional and answer honeyed pears, though I could answer otherwise and still speak of honey.

Jenna:  * flustered* Uh, hard or soft?

Geoffrey:  *sharp bark of laughter* Hard

Jenna: *consulting list of questions, hesitates, then cringes as she asks*  Fast or slow?

Geoffrey: * a slow grin spreads across his face* Each to its own time, as you so well know, Lady Jenna.

Jenna: *blushing profusely*  Uh, maybe…I don’t know…Well, I think that is all for today, Sir Geoffrey.  You have been most…informative about yourself and Lady Alyse.  I’m sure my readers will want to learn more about you and your…Herculean efforts with Alyse.

Geoffrey: The pleasure has been all mine. *grins wickedly and kisses my hand and I leave quickly* My great thanks for this very…educational experience.  And Lady Jenna tells me that another excerpt from Betrothal has been placed on Lady Sheri’s…blog post?  Is that something you ride?  Ahhh, ’tis called Friday Flames.  Perhaps riding of a different sort?  *grins wickedly*  You may find it at the following “URL” http://sherifredricks.blogspot.com/2013/04/friday-flames-guest-post-jenna-jaxon.html

Lady Jenna, have you revealed something about Lady Alyse that could be considered…unseemly?  Lady Jenna?  *Geoffrey storms off*

Blurb for Betrothal:

Lady Alyse de Courcy has fallen in love with Lord Braeton, a nobleman in King Edward III’s court and a man to whom she has barely spoken. Fate, however, has decreed her betrothal to his best friend, Sir Geoffrey Longford—a handsome and imposing knight, yet hardly the man she wants to wed.

When Sir Geoffrey is bound in betrothal by his father, he could not have expected the beautiful stranger to win his heart the moment they meet. Nevertheless, the fascinating Lady Alyse has done exactly that, and his feelings for her only grow as he learns more of her gentle yet spirited nature. But Alyse’s infatuation with his friend casts doubt on whether she can ever return his regard and their wedding day is fast approaching…

Will he have time enough to win her love?

A Tale from the Round Table

Excerpt for Betrothal:

“What do you require of me, Majesty?” Her mouth so dry she could taste sand, Alyse fought to speak in a normal tone. With a sigh of relief, she dropped into a deep curtsy, hiding her face in the folds of her skirt. If only she could remain bowed thus before His Majesty for the remainder of the evening.

King Edward laughed. “Obedience, Lady Alyse, as I require of all my subjects. As your father requires of his daughter.”

Her heart thumped wildly in her breast. That could mean but one thing.

“Rise, my lady.”

She did so on unsteady feet. “I am ready, as always, Your Majesty, to obey my father as I would you.”

Holy Mary, let it be Lord Braeton.

King Edward lifted an eyebrow toward Alyse. “A very pretty answer, my lady. And are you ready to accept your father’s decree for your betrothal? His messenger has today reached me with the contract, as I am to stand in his stead in this matter.”

Robert_Anning_Bell_-_La_belle_dame_sans_merciAlyse took a deep breath and hoped her voice did not tremble. “Yea, Majesty, I will obey my father.”

King Edward nodded and leaned over to whisper something to Queen Phillipa, who sat beside him, heavy with their twelfth child.

Mere seconds before she learned her fate. She could scarce affect an indifferent pose before the court when inside every inch of her quivered with anticipation of the name. His name, pray God, on the king’s lips.

Thomas.

In her mind, she heard the word.

The king straightened, glanced at her then at the man by her side.

“What say you then, Sir Geoffrey? Does the lady not speak fair? I vow she will make you a proper wife and a dutiful one as well.”

Alyse turned, until that moment unaware that Geoffrey Longford stood beside her. Chills coursed down her body as the king’s words echoed in her mind. The sensation of falling backward assailed her, as though she rushed away from the tall man at her side even as his figure loomed larger and larger in her sight.

Not Lord Braeton.

Her numbed brain repeated the phrase, trying to comprehend that instead he would be her husband. Geoffrey Longford.

God have mercy on me, for by the look of him, this man will not.

Fearful, she cringed as her gaze climbed higher, over his chest, over his chin, finally resting on the dark blue eyes turned toward her.

Geoffrey returned her appraisal, his gaze sweeping her figure as a smile crept over his face. “Your Majesty.” He spoke to the king but his attention remained fixed on Alyse. “When my father told me of the betrothal contract before I left his home, I resolved to play the dutiful son. Now, however, I find I do not wish to act that role after all.” His eyes held hers as he paused.

Mirth and Gladness Lead
A Dance in The Roman de la Rose

Dear God, does he mean to renounce me here before the entire court?

Alyse stared at the man beside her, willing herself to remain upright, despite the waves of ice and fire alternating through her body.

“Now I find I would rather play the ardent lover.”

An amused murmur ran through the Hall at his words. Sir Geoffrey grinned, his eyes sparkling with humor and something more. Despite the uneven light, Alyse saw an unfathomable promise in their dark depths. She took a shaky breath and looked away.

Release Day Party! Betrothal is Live!

Release Day Party!

Betrothal

Book 1

Time Enough to Love

betrothal-with-log final

After four years and a lot of blood, sweat, and tears, my medieval romance, Time Enough to Love, Book One–Betrothal, has released!

The original book was so long–187,000 words!–that I was advised to cut it into three novellas.  After about a year of stewing over it, I finally agreed that it might be possible.  Then began the long trek to publication.

The story is set in 1348 at the court of King Edward III of England.  Edward’s favorite daughter, fourteen year-old Joanna, is about to embark on a journey to Spain to marry Prince Pedro and ally England with Spain.  This is  the backdrop to the main story of Time Enough to Love.

The main romance of the book is the love story of Lady Alyse de Courcy, a lady-in-waiting to Princess Joanna, and Sir Geoffrey Longford, a knight in the service of King Edward.

In Book One, Betrothal, these two are betrothed by their parents, never having met one another.  Upon their first encounter, before the whole company of Edward’s court,  Alyse finds little to like about Sir Geoffrey.  She is enamored of another courtier, Thomas Knowlton, Earl of Braeton–Geoffrey’s best friend.

Geoffrey, on the other hand, is immediately smitten with his betrothed’s beauty, charm and feisty nature.  His Herculean task is to change Alyse’s heart before their wedding, two weeks hence.  Without killing his friend into the bargain.

Ideally, the other two books, Betrayal and Beleaguered, will release mid-summer and early fall.

My one-line pitch for Time Enough to Love is “Romeo & Juliet, with the Bubonic Plague, and a happy ending.” LOL  I hope that piques your interest enough to want to read my little romance.  I really do hope you love it as much as I do. 🙂

To celebrate Betrothal’s release this coming week, I’m giving away a $25.00 gift card to one commenter who comments on my blog, follows my blog, and follows me on Twitter.  The winner will be announced on this blog next week.  I’m doing a mini-blog tour next week, and the more you follow me and comment, the more you’ll have to be registered for the gift card. The tour is listed under the TOUR tab if you want to follow along.

Currently, Betrothal is available only at Smashwords.  But it should be on Amazon shortly as well.

Please come back to the Journal at noon for an interview with my hero, Sir Geoffrey Longford, and an absolutely yummy picture of him! 🙂  He’s not the shy type, so be prepared for some interesting answers to my questions.  Hope to see you there!

Geoffrey’s ragged breathing sounded harsh as he traced her ear’s outline with his tongue, pausing to suck on the lobe.
