Interview: Avant and Abby from Queen of Jastain

I have such a treat for you today!  I’ve got the hero and heroine of Kary Rader’s just released (like two days ago!) fantasy romance, Queen of Jastain, here for an interview! Avant and Abby are absolutely fantastic, and I’m so happy to be able to introduce you to them.

QoJlarge

Hello, Abby and Avant.  I’m so absolutely thrilled to have you on the Journal today!  I’ll try not to ask you questions of a too personal nature.  Your writer had one rather naughty question to ask one of my rather naughty heroes.  But I promise to keep it clean. 🙂

So, Abby and Avant, what was your first impression of your writer?

Abby: I love Kary. She’s awesome. She’s a gal I could go out with for a girl’s night.

Avant: My first impression was that the task set before her was beyond her ken. The Light has proven me wrong. She was more than capable of telling my story with skill and reverence. I’m proud of her.

How did you two meet?

Avant (smiles): She popped into the Valley of Umbra at a most opportune time.

Abby: What he means is that I swept in and saved his ass from a bunch of sword-toting bad guys on horseback.

Avant: That as well.

What is your greatest strength? Greatest weakness? How have they shaped your life?

Avant: I have few weaknesses and I’m rarely wrong.

Abby: Right. Well, we can all see humility is Avant’s strong suit. My greatest strength is putting up with big egos.

Avant, what first drew you to Abby? What qualities does he/she possess that are attractive to you?

Avant: Lovely Jenna, this is a question I’ve put much thought into. Something drew me to Abigail long before I was willing to acknowledge the draw. Of course she is beautiful and not just her form but her character as well. Certainly, now I believe the Light ordained her for me and I for her, but it was her optimism and radiance that at first attracted me to her.

Abby, what does Avant do that drives you absolutely crazy?

Avant: Be kind, Abigail.

Abby: One of the things I love the most about Avant and hate the most about him is his high expectations of others. His requirements are so exacting that sometimes it’s hard living up to his standards, but I love that he would never expect anything of me that he wouldn’t willingly do himself.

Abby, if you could be in any other profession, what would you do and why?

Abby: I think I’d like to be the host of American Idol. I love that show.

Avant: What? You’re the Queen of Jastain and you’d prefer to host a television show, Abigail?

Abby: Well, only if I couldn’t be queen, honey.

Avant, what is your idea of a romantic evening?

Avant: Abigail has taken great pains in showing me the benefits of romance. I enjoy taking her on picnics and secluded trips. Sharing the beauties of nature is the most romance I can come up with.

Abby: It works for me, honey.

You two are just too sweet!  That is very romantic, Avant.  And thank you both so much for sitting down with me this morning.  I’m sure your adventures will continue.

Blurb:

The Light brought her to him, but does he have the faith to make her his queen?

For twenty years, Avant plotted revenge against the dark king, but when a mysterious woman suddenly appears, everything changes. Although his prophetic Gift reveals she’s the Seed of Light chosen to restore the Crown, his overwhelming attraction to the women threatens his long-held plan for revenge and two decades of fidelity.

Abby Randall is inexplicably transported from Dallas to the medieval land of Jastain. There she meets Avant, who claims she’s the foretold champion of his people. While the hot guy has her hormones pumping, his crazy talk of defeating an evil king leaves questions to his sanity. Through his supernatural Gift, Avant transplants his memories into her, but neither are prepared for how their hearts intertwine.

Together they embark on their quest, but when Abby and Avant come face to face with destiny, will they sacrifice what matters most to provide a happily-ever-after for the people of Jastain?

Excerpt:

When Avant climbed back to the cave, his hair was wet. He’d slicked it back from his face and tied it into a little ponytail with a leather string. The sexy shadow of a light beard softened his angular jaw, and the thick waves of his hair shined with chestnut highlights in the morning sun. It was a good look for him, but then again, what wasn’t? Abby ran her fingers through her own tangled tresses and pulled her hair back. What she wouldn’t give for a hair clip.

“Would you like a thong for your hair?”

She giggled at the word thong, certain that what she pictured was not what he referenced.

“Do you have an extra one? I’d like to get it out of my face, and I don’t have anything.” Actually she had her own thong, but she sure as hell wasn’t putting it in her hair.

He immediately unlaced the tie at the neck of his shirt and handed it to her.

She gasped and put a hand to her face to hide the heat in her cheeks as his shirt fell open below his breast bone. “You don’t have to do that.”

Her blood coursed wildly at the sight of the smooth muscles of his chest. A soft sprinkling of dark hair beckoned her fingers. She swallowed hard.

“It’s all right. Please use it. It will be a hard day’s journey with hair in your face.” His words rang in her mind so sincerely she forgot her embarrassment, but her eyes kept flitting to his heavenly chest.

“Thank you, Avant, and not only for the lace but for everything you’re doing to help me.”

Holding her gaze, he nodded once, and her heart fluttered. Was it getting warm in the cave? She wiped the beads of sweat from her forehead.

“It is time to be off if we are to make it to the next shelter before nightfall.” He picked up his pack and walked to the mouth of the cave. She grabbed her bag and followed.

Climbing down proved to be more difficult than going up. The muscles required to lower herself from one level to the next worked her thighs and butt like no gym equipment she’d ever experienced. It was like doing hours of squats. She trudged down the mountain with the previous day’s tumult weighting her down like the “freshman ten.” Avant helped her along on the steeper steps, but, for the most part, she made them on her own, clippity-clopping in those damned Docinis all the way.

When he reached the bottom, he disappeared around an outcropping. Abby took the last little step to the base and hurried after him. As she turned the corner, Avant grabbed her arm and spun her around. Driving her back against the rock, he pressed the length of his rigid body against her. His face, barely three inches from hers, clenched in thin lines of stress. Her heart raced…with fear.

She was pretty sure it was fear.

F is for Farandole

I could not get this post up last Friday, so I thought I would send it out now, timely as it is. 🙂

225px-40-svaghi,suono_e_ballo,Taccuino_Sanitatis,_Casanatense_4182

F is for farandole,  a very lively dance performed during the middle ages.  It is said to be a dance of Provence and Languedoc, France, though one source traces it back to a dance from ancient Greece called the Grecian Crane or “windings of the labyrinth.” According to the Online Encyclopedia Britannica, the farandole “was mentioned as early as the 14th century and, according to tradition, was taken to Marseille from Greece by Phoenician sailors.”

“Winding” is a great descriptor of this dance.  Men and women held hands, creating a chain, and followed the leader’s steps as they wound throughout the town. People ran, skipped

Mirth and Gladness Lead a Dance from Roman of the Rose

Mirth and Gladness
Lead a Dance from Roman of the Rose

and walked down the streets of a town. At some point, the people at the ends would grasp hands, creating a circle.  Or a couple might hold hands and create a bridge.  Then all the others would skip under the arch.

Some sources state that the farandole is a later dance, dating from the Renaissance, when the first written references to it occur.  However, paintings of medieval dancers denote this very chain dance.  It is likely that the dance itself may have existed, although the formal name was not written down at the time.

At any rate, I wanted a lively dance in Betrothal  for Alyse when she has her first dance with…

But that would be telling, now wouldn’t it? 🙂  Betrothal releases on Friday, April 19!

Sweet Saturday: 04/13/13 Betrothal ~ “A Tale From the Round Table”

Welcome back to Sweet Saturday Sample!  All excerpts here are rated PG-13 or milder.

I’m continuing with a sample from my medieval WIP, Time Enough to Love:  Book 1 ~ Betrothal.

APRIL 19 IS OFFICIAL RELEASE DATE FOR BETROTHAL!

WOOHOO!

Disclaimer:  This work is still going through the editing process, so please forgive any flaws.

Betrothal with Logo

This series is set in England and France in 1348.  Part 1, Betrothal, takes place at the court of King Edward III.

This excerpt begins where last Saturday’s left off. You can read that post here. Geoffrey has confronted Thomas about the trouble he has caused between him and Lady Alyse.

A Tale from the Round Table

A Tale from the
Round Table

Thomas’s mouth twisted into a sneer. “Why does this matter so much to you, Geoffrey? The girl must wed you. What does it matter whether she comes willing or not to your bed? You are acting the lovesick fool!” He managed to wrest his tunic away and put some distance between them.

“Better a lovesick fool than a man incapable of feeling.”

“By God, Geoffrey…”

“Peace, Thomas.” Geoffrey put out a dismissive hand. “My regard for Lady Alyse is none of your concern. But the grief and mistrust I have brought down on my own head are, for you certainly had a hand in that.”

After ten years of friendship, how had they come to this? An unwilling chuckle erupted from his lips, causing Thomas to glance at him suspiciously. “Two friends at odds over a woman,” he offered ruefully. “We sound like a tale from the Round Table.”

I hope you enjoyed this latest sample from  Betrothal.   Join me tomorrow on Weekend Writing Warriors for the conclusion to my excerpts from Betrothal.  The boys put their heads together in a plan. 🙂

And be sure to click here to visit more Sweet Samples.

Horny Hump Day 04/10/13: 7 Days of Seduction “More Pain-Pleasure” #HornyHDay

WARNING:  MATERIAL NOT SUITABLE FOR THOSE UNDER THE AGE OF 18!

NOT SAFE FOR WORK!

Participating authors in Horny Hump Day post three sentences from their published works or WIP, hot like a firecracker! LOL

April Showers made me think of my cover for

7 Days of Seduction

7-days

Ashley Thompson had a wild time at her party last Friday night. Maybe too wild. She wakes to find a video of her in the middle of a ménage a trois with her ex-boyfriend and a gorgeous stranger. Unable to remember anything about the night, other than the hot sex she sees on the computer screen, Ashley begins a search for Mr. Hunk. She has no luck until he unexpectedly shows up–in her shower.

Hunter Hopewell intends to introduce Ash to a variety of sexual experiences he finds fun and exciting. He proposes a week-long series of “colorful” encounters designed to seduce Ashley out of her kink comfort zone.

As their week of escalating pleasure intensifies, Ashley must choose to let go of her inhibitions or risk losing the best damn lover she’s ever had.

I’ve got three more hot sentences for today from the shower scene in Day 2.

canstock4331246Hunter smiled and spun them around so the water cascaded over his back. He bent her backward until he could suck her nipple into his mouth. As he grazed it with his teeth, more pain-pleasure sparked to her empty channel–then he sent his fingers to twist and tweak, replacing the torment of his mouth.

7 Days of Seduction is available at Amazon, New Dawning Bookfair, and ARe.

Please check out the Horny Hump Day blog site for the other sites on the hop and go visit the other hot authors.

Thanks so much for visiting the Journal once more for Horny Hump Day!

Interview with Debut Author Ella Quinn

I’m so excited to have my good friend, author Ella Quinn here today, answering questionsElla Quinn about her life as a writer and her debut Regency novel, The Seduction of Lady Phoebe.

Welcome, Ella.  What can you tell us about your new release?

The Seduction of Lady Phoebe is on pre-order. It’s about a lady who is afraid to love and the man who is determined to marry her.

What was your inspiration for this story?

I had a video playing in my mind of an angry woman in Regency dress, pacing.

I am a fanatic about my character names. Are your character names special in any way?

I think they are, particularly if writing an historical. The name was an indication of their social status and/ or profession. So far, all my main characters have introduced themselves to me with appropriate names. I do use two books with historical names for my secondary characters. One has more latitude with servant’s names than one does with a character that is part of the ton, for example. Many people in the country name girls after flowers. Whereas that wasn’t common for a lady’s name until later in the century.

What was your process for writing this book?  Is this different or the same as other books you’ve written?

I’d say my writing method has evolved. My first book I wrote from beginning to end. The second one, I wrote while editing the first, so I had to re-read the previous chapter before I could start again. The third one, I started to write from beginning to end, but had to rearrange it, so some parts got written out of order. Since the fifth book, I write mostly from beginning to end, but frequently write scenes out of order.

Do you have plans for a sequel to this book?

Oh, yes. In fact the first four books of the series are done, and I’m writing the fifth. I plan to have one more to finish this series. I already have the first two books of the next series written.

Who is your favorite romance hero or heroine and why?

I don’t think I have just one, but if I had to pick, it would be Dominic, the Marquis of Vidal from Georgette Heyer’s The Devil’s Cub. A very close second is Hugo Darracott from The Unknown Ajax.

What qualities do they possess that make them memorable?

They are both strong and go after what they want.

Who was the first romance author and book you read?

I can’t remember, but the one that had the most impact on me was Georgette Heyer.

Who has been the greatest influence on your writing?

I think Georgette Heyer has. I love her humor and dialogue.

If you could have one wish granted just for you (not world peace, LOL), what would you wish for?

A publishing contract with a six figure advance.

What is the most exciting/daredevil thing you’ve ever done?

That’s hard. It would be a toss up between scuba diving and taking off on my own driving tour from South Florida to Michigan, through Canada then back down again when I was eighteen. The interstate was not completed at the time.

Now, Lightning Round:

What is your favorite amusement park ride? The round-up

 Tea or coffee? Tea.

French manicure or color (and if color, what color)? French, but only on my toes. I can’t stand any polish on my fingernails.

Beach or mountains? Both. I love water sports and skiing.

Chocolate or vanilla? Chocolate

Boxers, briefs or commando? Commando

Blond, brunette or redhead? (preferred men’s hair color) Brunette

Would you rather skydive or scuba dive? Hahaha. When we meet I’ll tell you about my attempts to jump out of a plane. Let’s just say that I’ve not been the one to stop me. Scuba diving I was successful at learning.

Would you rather vacation in Hawaii, Vegas or London? I already live on a tropical island. London.

What’s the one thing you would never do? Cheat on my husband.

Fantastic answers, Ella!  I can hardly wait to meet you! (Hopefully at RWA!)

THE SEDUCTION OF LADY PHOEBE ~ September 2013

Fleeing a matchmaking attempt with the only man she despises, Phoebe meets a handsome blue-eyed stranger who sends her senses skittering. LORD MARCUS FINLEY last saw Phoebe striding regally away, as he lay on the floor with a bruised jaw and a rapidly swelling eye. Recently returned from the West Indies, Marcus is determined to earn Phoebe’s love, preferably before she discovers who he is. Determined to have Phoebe for his own, Marcus begins his campaign to gain her forgiveness and seduce her into marriage.

Author Interview: Christine Warner and Some Like It In Handcuffs

I’m so excited!  One week later and I have a return engagement with the wonderful Christine Warner who’s celebrating an anniversary today.  Please help me welcome a fantastic author of romantic suspense!

__5167340

Tell us a little bit about your release.

Some Like it in Handcuffs officially released in March 2012, so we are celebrating my year
anniversary. This was my debut book…and I’d love to share the blurb with you.

Sunny Kennedy, the only female in a family of blue blood male detectives, is determined
to prove testosterone isn’t the only qualification required to solve a cold case. Handcuffed
while undercover then taken to the precinct by an attractive detective, her domineering
family demands she work with Detective Judson Blackwolf, or she’s off the case.

Judson Blackwolf thinks women in law enforcement should work behind the scenes. The
prospect of working with his Captain’s sexy daughter doesn’t thrill him. He only agrees in
hopes of solving the murder of his one time mentor’s daughter. Once the case is over, he’s
moving to Montana to heal his wounds from the loss of his last partner.

But when their investigation takes a dangerous turn, Sunny and Judd soon realize their
feelings for each other cannot be denied.

What was your inspiration for this story?

This might sound a little odd, but I actually came up with the title first. Those five words
popped into my head and from there the characters were formed, plots tweaked and my
storyline was born. I’ve found since then that I love to have a title before writing begins,
even if I end up changing it. 🙂

I am a fanatic about my character names. Are the character names special in any way?

I love choosing character names too. I actually can’t start a book until I have them picked
out. When I chose the name Sunny for my heroine it just fit with her personality. She’s a
bit spunky and sassy, but has a big heart. As for Judson, at the time I was working on this
story I worked in a large emergency department. Many patients came through the doors
and I was privy to hundreds of names a night. One patient was named Judson, I had never
heard the name before and loved it on the spot…and I knew instantly what name I’d give
to my hero. 🙂

Do you have plans for a sequel to this book?

When I originally wrote Some Like it in Handcuffs I planned to write a book for each of
Sunny’s four brothers, but several other projects needed tending to first and I haven’t accomplished that goal. I do have one brother’s story complete, but I haven’t submitted it because I don’t know when or if I’ll have a chance to follow up with the other stories and didn’t think it’d be fair to my characters or my readers to only add one story to the series.

But…we’ll see how things go, and if I can manage to get the others written, I’d love to.
Judson, Sunny and all of her brothers hold a special place in my heart…but I want to make
sure I can devote the time needed so their stories have the time they deserve.

If you could have one wish granted just for you (not world peace, LOL), what would you
wish for?

I know most authors wish for this, and I’m no exception…I’d love the ability to write full
time. And it’d be even better if I could do it on my own private island while lounging in
a comfy padded chair with the light breeze from the water keeping me cool while warm
sunshine kissed my skin. 🙂 Heaven!

Now, Lightning Round:

Tea or coffee?

I gave up coffee a few months back…I miss it, but I was also a tea drinker as well…so I’ll
make it. Lol I like warm tea or cold tea. 🙂

Chocolate or vanilla?

Chocolate…hands down!

Blond, brunette or redhead? (preferred men’s hair color)

I’ve always been attracted to tall, dark and handsome…Hello Gerard, Johnny and Jake 🙂

Would you rather skydive or scuba dive?

I’m terrified of heights, so I’d have to go with scuba diving. Actually, I think I’d really like
that adventure. 🙂

What’s the one thing you would never do?

The first thing that comes to mind is skydive! lol

Thank you so much for coming by today, Christine.  Best of luck with your tour and the book.  So nice to see you again.

Excerpt for Some Like It In Handcuffs:

“This isn’t how I wanted it between us.” Judson grabbed the neckline of her sweater, dragging her body to meet his with a solid thump. Sunny licked her lips in answer to the question in his eyes. He lowered his head to move his mouth over hers.

Sunny closed her eyes, a small whimper escaping her lips. She didn’t want it like this either, but that wasn’t possible. Unable to resist her attraction she accepted it wasn’t an affair, or a long distance romance she craved, but for him to love her back. It was all or nothing for her. Her heart sank. She accepted this as their goodbye kiss.

With no thought to what was happening upstairs, Sunny rose up on her toes demanding more. Her lips pulsated against Judson’s. When his hand trembled against her cheek in a soft caress she lost touch with reality.

“Judson.” Sunny’s weakened body drifted farther into Judson’s as his fingers glided down her arms, pulling them to her sides where their fingers intertwined. He forced them behind her before his tongue thrust into her mouth.

Their bodies molded together, she heard her own heartbeat and his as well when he curved his fingers around her rear and squeezed.

That’s when the click of the handcuffs against her wrist connected her to the handle of the locked cupboard.

“What the hell…Judson?” She looked up at him, her knees shook, her body still inflamed with fever.

“Like I was saying, you wait here and I’ll go upstairs to check it out. Backup’s already been called, so you’re safe until your brothers arrive.” Judson winked before walking toward the steps to the third level. Once he reached them he turned toward her and smiled. “Gotcha,” he whispered with his notorious grin.

This series is set in England and France in 1348.  Part 1, Betrothal, takes place at the court of King Edward III.

This excerpt includes last Sunday’s 8 sentences.  Geoffrey is confronting Thomas about the trouble he has caused between him and Lady Alyse.  He is NOT pussyfooting around. LOL

By the time Geoffrey returned to the reception room, Thomas had moved closer to the door in anticipation of the king’s customary afternoon ride. His entrance drew no one’s attention as the courtiers were milling about, waiting for the king to rise. He took the opportunity of the unguarded moment to seize his friend’s tunic and shove him out the chamber door.

“Geoffrey! Have you lost your senses? What are you doing?” Thomas grasped his arms, tried to break his hold, but to no avail.

Geoffrey bore him into the corridor and threw him unceremoniously into the far wall. Thomas whirled, and reached for his knife. Geoffrey darted forward, struck the blade from his hand and grabbed his clothing again.

“You had to interfere, Thomas. Had to plant doubt in my mind.” Geoffrey’s voice lowered in deathly calm, though he seethed with anger. He adjusted his hold on the dull red fabric, screwing it into a tight knot against Thomas’s chest.

“What are you talking about, Geoffrey? You are not making sense.” Thomas glared at him, though Geoffrey caught a flicker of fear in his friend’s eyes. Good.

“I went to Alyse to learn her choice because you thought it would be ill-advised.” Geoffrey leaned his full weight into Thomas, trapping him against the wall with no hope of escape. “Now, in trying to prevent one disaster, I have created another. She thinks I do not trust her judgment and has withdrawn from me. Christ, she may not even speak to me again. Everything I have worked for the past two days, the trust, the companionship, the regard, has vanished.” He shook Thomas roughly, like a terrier with a rat, and turned a cold eye on his friend. “And you are going to help me get them back.”
