intimate-danger-2Intimate Danger by D.C. Stone

When FBI agent Trent Rossi arrives to investigate a chain of crimes—devastating murders and violent rapes—an inexperienced small town Detective, Charlie, who’s assigned to assist, finds her desire surging for the agent—only to realize he is the primary suspect. A sleeping threat has awakened in the small town of Nyack. Crimes in the cozy village, garner the attention of the FBI, who assign two agents to assist Charlie in tracking down the sick and deranged perpetrator. Agents Trent Rossi and Dillon Echols work closely with Charlie, but as the crimes progress, dark secrets begin to cloud the air, blurring the line between who is on the side of the law and who’s against it. Being Charlie’s first major case, she’s unprepared not only for the menacing killer on the loose, but also with the unexpected feelings Trent draws out of her.  While Trent holds secrets, disappears at random, and seems to understand their perpetrator all-too-well, Charlie’s suspicions grow along with the pull she feels toward him. Her attraction could become fatal, yet she does not realize it until it is too late.

What Could Have by D.C. Stone

Annabelle and Lucas have just enlisted in the United States Air Force. The two live on What Could Have_Front Cover_jpgopposite sides of the country, but are drawn together by a common goal, and a common connection.

Their friendship blooms, their trust grows, and the lust between them explodes. There are two problems with this situation, though. Neither of them communicate to the other on how they feel. And both of them fight against it.

Choices are taken out of their hands when, upon graduating from training, Annabelle and Lucas find that instead of being on opposite sides of the country, they will be on opposite sides of the world.

Ten years later, a common website has brought Annabelle and Lucas back in contact. The two of them have found each other after so many years; however, now, both are promised to others.

A brief kiss.

A heartbreaking realization.

And an accident.

Choices made that are, once again, taken out of their hands.

Excerpt:

Grey’s arms and legs were on fire, burning from his very veins, blistering every nerve ending on the way out. Why was the pain tearing through his chest? He tried to hail the woman but nothing came out except a quiet groan. Was he dying? He arched his neck toward her sister. Her body was so mangled it was all but unrecognizable as human. The girl’s eyes were open, fixed, staring back at him. She was dead. Would he die, too? What was that thing? That monster?

Maybe this was all a dream. Maybe he still slept, back in his campsite a quarter of a mile away. He’d been sleeping there only a few minutes ago. Maybe he was just having a vivid night terror and he’d wake at any moment to the relief that this wasn’t real. The girl slid over to him, but he was already panting in pain. Fire in his blood burned him up.

Her mouth moved, but he couldn’t hear anything over the roaring in his ears. Like helicopter blades, the sound drowned out everything. Her lips were full, and when his vision blurred, he tried to focus on her face. She was beautiful. Tiny. Delicate like a hummingbird. Even through spilling tears, the moss green color of her eyes was clear and compelling.

Her voice overcame the screeching in his ears. “What’s your name?”

“Greyson,” he rasped. “Greyson Crawford.” Someone should know who he was. Notify Dad what had happened there in the woods of Enchanted Rock. “What’s yours?” It was getting so hard to breathe. He had to know. He’d leave the world on her name.

“Morgan. My name’s Morgan.”

Liza O’Connor on James Barry and The Troublesome Apprentice

apprentice blog tour banner

prize banner

Liza shares more about James Barry, a real Victorian woman who lived her life as a man. In fact, she joined the army and became their highest ranking Medical doctor.

james barry

While female patients declared her kind and caring, Barry was sent off a great deal of islands for angering the local governments and religious leaders. The first time he met Florence Nightingale didn’t go well either, as stated in this letter by Florence:

“I never had such a blackguard rating in all my life – I who have had more than any woman – than from this Barry sitting on his horse, while I was crossing the Hospital Square with only my cap on in the sun. He kept me standing in the midst of quite a crowd of soldiers, Commissariat, servants, camp followers, etc., etc., every one of whom behaved like a gentleman during the scolding I received while he behaved like a brute . . . After he was dead, I was told that [he] was a woman . . . I should say that [she] was the most hardened creature I ever met.”

Hold on, you say. Wasn’t Barry’s gender supposed to be a 100 year secret?

Turns out quite a few people knew the truth back then, besides the manservant who returned to Jamaica and the charwoman who cleaned the body. Even the General Register Office had heard the whispers and clearly Barry’s doctor at the time of her death knew, despite his denial of such.

Here are some interesting letters on the matter:

Letter from the General Register Office:

Sir,

It has been stated to me that Inspector-General Dr. James Barry, who died at 14 Margaret Street on 25 July 1865, was after his death found to be female. As you furnished the Certificate as to the cause of his death, I take the liberty of asking you whether what I have heard is true, and whether you yourself ascertained that he was a woman and apparently had been a mother?

Perhaps you may decline answering these questions; but I ask them not for publication but for my own information.

Your faithful servant

George Graham”

That has to be the most polite “You cocked up this autopsy!” letter I’ve ever seen.

Here’s a condensed version of McKinnon’s response:

“Sir,

I had been intimately acquainted with the doctor for good many years, both in London and the West Indies and I never had any suspicion that Dr. Barry was a woman.

There was the woman who performed the last offices for Dr. Barry… Amongst other things she said thatDr. Barry was a female and that I was a pretty doctor not to know this and she would not like to be attended by me.”

Go Sassy Charwoman!

“I informed [her] that it was none of my business whether Dr. Barry was a male or a female…She then said that she had examined the body, and [it] was a perfect female and farther that there were marks of ‘him’ having had a child when very young.

I then enquired, “How have you formed that conclusion?”

The woman, pointing to the lower part of his stomach, said, “From marks here. I am a married woman and the mother of nine children and I ought to know.”

…I informed [her] that my own impression was that Dr. Barry was a Hermaphrodite. But whether Dr. Barry was a male, female, or hermaphrodite I do not know, nor had I any purpose in making the discovery.”

Further investigation proved, in fact, Dr. Barry was a woman. The British Army managed to warn into silence all those that knew the truth and sealed Barry’s records for 100 years.

Thus, James Barry was buried in Kensal Green Cemetery under her male name and retained her full rank in death.

Had Vic or Xavier questioned Barry’s doctor, his declared ignorance of his job would have gotten him scolded for sure. Fortunately, for the doctor, this dance around the truth occurred in 1865. Vic wasn’t born yet and Xavier was but 4 years old, and while he was very bossy even at four, External Affairs had not yet invited him to join their ranks of spies protecting England.

And I wish to conclude with the same takeaway I did in the prior discussion on James Barry, because it’s important for your enjoyment of my series: Barry was diminutive in size and had a high voice. And yet, all through medical school and then 44 years in the army, she fooled them all.

Only a man could do great things. For a woman to be so amazing was more inconceivable than the truth scolding them before their eyes.

This makes me wonder how many other real women in the Victorian Era dressed up as men and did extraordinary things. Fooling the world wasn’t that hard.

All you needed to do was

  1. Dress up as a man
  2. Be rude and obnoxious when people annoy you.
  3. Be highly skilled in your profession

THEN YOU MUST BE A MAN

-End of Discussion.

I’ve given Vic far more advantages than James Barry had: Vic’s as tall as most men, she speaks in a low voice, and possesses many binding undershirts specifically made to crush flat her breasts, widen her waist and provide the appearance of a manhood hiding beneath her pants.

She can also be very rude and bossy. She’s even yelled at Chief Inspector Stone of Scotland Yard.

Yet, even half-trained she exhibits an extraordinary range of talents needed to capture criminals. The Chief Inspector even offered to hire her when Xavier fires her. (Xavier has a bad rep when it comes to secretaries, which is the job he hired Vic to do.)

It even takes Xavier a little time to discover the truth about Vic and even more time to discover what continues to stand between them.

Now to the story:

The Adventures of

Xavier & Vic

Book 1

The Troublesome Apprentice

By Liza O’Connor

The Key to Aunt Maddy’s Death

The Missing Husband of Mrs. Wimple

The Disappearing Scarlet Nun

The Clever Butcher’s Wife

The Rescue of Lady Anne

unnamed

While investigating the death of a friend and client, Maddy Hamilton, Xavier Thorn (reputed to be the greatest sleuth in England) is greatly impressed with Maddy’s nephew, Victor, and offers him a job as his secretary. Aware of Xavier’s history of firing secretaries, Victor garners a promise that for three months he cannot be fired. Vic then proceeds, in Xavier’s view, to be cheeky and impertinent at every turn. Xavier endures the impudent pup because Victor is most skilled in extracting the truth from clients and intuiting facts with little evidence to assist.

As they solve a string of cases, Xavier discovers a few more important details about his troublesome apprentice, such as her true gender, and the realization that she has awakened his long dormant heart.

unnamed

Vic was raised by her Aunt Maddy, a ‘New Woman’ who chose not to marry one of the endless trail of gentlemen wishing to acquire her fortune. Instead, she decided to be the ‘master’ of her domain and remain single. Instead, she takes her handsome butler, Gregory, as her lover and pretends the life of a spinster.

This is the scene, when Vic & Clare have to tell Gregory how and why Aunt Maddy died:

They found Gregory seated on Maddy’s bed and sat down on each side of him. Taking his hands into theirs, Vic retold the story once more.

Witnessing stoic Gregory break down and cry shocked Vic to her core. What if they couldn’t pull the dear man from his grief?

“Aunt Maddy’s life was not a meaningless sacrifice, Gregory. She saved countless lives. Many people would have died, had she not bought those shoes and obtained the key. She is a hero, even in death, and I am certain she is pleased as punch, up in heaven, knowing she stopped the sale of government secrets.”

Between Claire’s sweet embrace and Xavier’s words shared by Vic, the gasps of pain lessened and finally the healing began.

Once Gregory regained his composure and settled on firm ground, Vic tried to distract him from the residual pain by informing him she had a job as Xavier’s secretary for a hundred pounds a month.

Gregory sighed. “Victor, Xavier Thorn’s secretaries do not last a week.”

Claire nodded. “I told him the same.”

“Well, I am determined to change the record. I’m going to be the best secretary he has ever had.”

Gregory’s brow furrowed as he handed her a card taken from his pocket. “This arrived at eight this morning. I took the liberty of reading it, but decided you needed sleep more than lectures. You probably should have mentioned the job to me yesterday.”

Vic opened the note. In slashing pen strokes indicating great annoyance were the words:

It is time to work!!!!

“I had better change and go now,” Vic said.

Claire gripped Vic’s arm. “It’s nearly four. By the time you arrive, it will be time to come home. You should wait and arrive very early tomorrow morning.”

“I am sure you are right, but I am going now when I can honestly say I just received his summons. Such will not be the case if I arrive tomorrow morning.”

Spotlight on Great and Unfortunate Desires by Gina Danna

GinaDanna_Great&UnfortunateDesires_800px

Blurb:

Tristan, the Marquis of Wrenworth and British spy, must marry but he’s haunted by guilt of war.

Lady Evelyn Hurstine’s past makes her fear men but for Tristan, she’s willing to overcome her fear.

Caught in a world of intrigue and mayhem, can they find love before the traitor destroys them both?

Excerpt:

“Pardon me, sir, I believe the lady is with me.”

The rich male voice interrupted their game. It startled Evelyn but quickly warmed her. She recognized the voice. Tristan. Her Adonis. Her stomach fluttered, as if she’d swallowed a hundred butterflies. It appeared he had surprised Andrew too. His body tensed as he stepped away from her.

“I’m sorry, Lord Wrenworth, I did not think she needed a chaperone today,” Huntington stated flatly, his tone guarded and unfriendly.

“Hardly. I am her fiancée.” The man’s voice hard, a challenge underlining his statement.

Evelyn’s breath caught in her throat. Others reacted with surprise as well. Sarah’s mouth dropped open, Andrew’s eyes widened, and behind Tristan, his friend Harry choked.

Swallowing rapidly, Evelyn’s mouth became dry so quickly, she was barely able to speak. Finally she stammered, “I-I beg your pardon?”

***

What made him say that, of all things? Fiancée? Engaged to the ice queen? Tristan noticed how pale Evelyn turned, and part of him tightened. When that fop moved away so quickly, it was obvious the man wasn’t really interested in Evelyn. But Tristan’s interest surely could have been expressed less dramatically.

“Tris.” Harry stood behind him. “What are you doing?” It was a low whisper.

Tristan forced a smile, concentrating to make it more of a devil-may-care grin. “It wasn’t to be announced just yet,” he replied, his gaze on Evelyn. She still looked a bit shocked. “Come, my sweet.” He held his hand up for her to take.

Her eyes still wide, but her mouth now shut, Evelyn gently laid her hand on his, like a butterfly landing on a flower, fragile as spun glass. She blinked and managed to return a timid smile as he led her away.

Several feet from the croquet game, she stopped, withdrawing her hand, as if he had stung her.

“Do you care to explain yourself, captain? Wait, no, my lord?”

He wanted to laugh at her attempt to guess his rank but heard the anger in her tone. Ah, so his ice queen wasn’t entirely frozen. Her anger melted that lovely aloof façade. Pity.

“I’ve come to a conclusion, my dear…”

“I am not your ‘dear’,” she snapped.

He snorted at her reaction. “But for all intents and purposes, you are. Now hear me out.” Tristan directed her to the oak tree near the edge of the grounds. They were in full view of everyone, so he figured she’d be calmer there than in the house. Evelyn reminded him of a skittish colt, on the verge of darting off if threatened.

“I need a wife. You are searching for a husband. That braggart there was too close for comfort. Therefore, I rescued you.” He chuckled. “And he won’t be bothering you again.”

Her gaze narrowed. Ah, the fire in her eyes lit to blazing. “Whose comfort?”

Jenna Interviews Karen Lopp, Author of Splintered Lies

I’ve got good friend and fellow author Karen Lopp here today, sitting in the hot seat (well, probably the luke-warm seat–I’m not cut-throat in my interviews) at Jenna’s Journal.  So sit back, Karen, and let me into your soul. 🙂

1. Tell us a little bit about your new release. Splintered Lies is my debut romantic suspense. It involves a drug cartel bent on vengeance and two undercover officers who must work together to bring the cartel to justice. The Romance Review gave it a 4 stars.

2. I am a fanatic about my character names. Are the character names special in any way? Some names I just fall in love with and that is what happened with my hero’s name, Jerah. Usually I search for a name that fits the character.

3.   Do you have plans for a sequel to this book? While working on my next suspense novel part of the plot flowed great with Splintered Lies so I tied them together for a sequel. Jerah and Rissa will have a cameo appearance in the next book.

4. Who was the first romance author and book you read? Aw, geez, that was way too long ago to remember. It was probably Barbra Cartland or Georgette Heyer.

5. Who has been the greatest influence on your writing? My husband, he has been my sounding board, my fan, and a great role model for the hero’s in my stories.

6. What is the most exciting/daredevil thing you’ve ever done? Class V river rafting. My sister-in-law, who had our kids and my nephews at an observation point, watched us disappear in a huge hole and thought she was going to have to adopt six kids that day. It was a blast.

Now, Lightning Round:

7. What is your favorite amusement park ride? Roller coaster, the faster the better.

8. Chocolate or vanilla? Chocolate

9. Boxers, briefs or commando? Boxers.

10. Blond, brunette or redhead? (preferred men’s hair color) brunette

11. Would you rather skydive or scuba dive? Scuba dive. It is not over so fast and there are so many beautiful colors in the sea.

12. Would you rather vacation in Hawaii, Vegas or London? I’ve been to Hawaii and Vegas so I’d choose London. It would be exciting to explore places I’ve never been

BLURB:

Detective Rissa Marten sacrificed her only chance for a normal life to put a drug lord behind bars. Now, her life in the shadows has to be brought to life to save the man she has secretly loved for years. With a price on her head can she risk letting him know?

Author Bio.

Stories have always been a part of my life, from books to tales passed down from my ancestors that brought history to life. Danger, struggles and the will power to overcome are all found in the rich legacy of my family tree. Inspiration from their lives inspired me to write what I love. Branching out to contemporary suspense has been another dream come true. I hope my stories bring you entertainment and inspiration.

I love history of all times and places. And my second but equal love of suspense fills my books.

Excerpt:

Jerah Qassem had never been more grateful for his years of undercover training than at this moment. Fingers tight around the tumbler to stop the tremors, he watched the apparition glide up to the bar, and wondered if someone had laced his drink with a hallucinogen. Mary was dead. He had nightmares or wet dreams about her most nights for the last eight years.

It wasn’t only the woman’s face that had his insides swirling like a hurricane. It was the way she moved. Long, smooth strides, shoulders straight and eyes darting around like a caged cat. Mary had always been casting looks over her shoulder as if she expected someone to jump out and chase her. But those legs were just as toned and shapely as Mary’s had been. She had been athletic and grabbed every chance she could to romp around the beach. Even the hair was the exact same color of ripened wheat and bounced just below her shoulders. Just like Mary had worn it.

Chills erupted all over his body and cold fingers caressed the nape of his neck. Unable to blink, Jerah stared at the ghost of Mary. The girl he had sent to her death in a fit of anger. The girl he had fallen in love with, yet had been too proud and ambitious to acknowledge until she was gone. Forever.

Jerah closed his eyes against the jarring memory of two firemen holding him back from the charred remains of the building he had sent Mary into as three body bags were carried out. A shudder rattled down his spine. He had relived that day too often. When he glanced back at the bar, the woman had taken a seat and smiled at the bartender. Jerah knew that smile. The same smile that once had almost melted his resolve to not get involved. He had had a career to build. Mary had stirred up thoughts of forever and love, things he hadn’t been ready for. The temptation had been great. But somehow, he persevered and tossed away the best thing that had ever happened to him.

Air exploded from his chest and Jerah shook his head. He did not believe in ghosts. Prickles sprang up his legs as if his blood had decided to flow again. He tugged his leaden body from the chair and stalked to the bar. “Give me a shot of Wild Turkey.” Needing the fortification, he gulped down the amber liquid. Fire burned down his throat. Nope, he wasn’t dreaming. Hands braced on the edge of the bar, he turned to the woman at his side.

  4. Wayne and Lizzie are the hero and heroine of the story and have known each other for about 10 years.
  5. I used several television shows and songs from the era when writing my story.
  6. I had a very cute little scene involving bread bags and winter boots that I had to delete from the story because bread bags weren’t even invented in 1955.
  7. Lizzie is one of my favorite heroines to date. I love her spirit and personality.
  8. I love the 1920’s, 1940’s, and 1950’s and have always wanted to write a story in one of those decades. I hope that Secret Love will be the first of several.
  9. My favorite scene in the book is actually the prologue which goes back 10 years in time to 1945 when 13 year old Lizzie confesses a secret to 17 year old Wayne.
  10. The tropes in Secret Love are older brother’s best friend, boss/employee, and wrong side of the tracks, and unrequited love. Some of my favorites. Of the ones I’ve listed, which one is yours?

Thanks to Jenna for letting me share her blog today 🙂

SECRET LOVE: Book One in the Sweet Fifties Series

BLURB:

Saranac, Michigan 1955

Lizzie Tarleton has always done things her own way—including the time at the tender age of thirteen when she confessed to her brother’s best friend she loved him. But now she’s a new teacher at the local high school, and independent enough to know that you can’t force love. She’ll find love when the time is right—even though her parents are adamant the time is now. The only downfall to her idyllic life is the fact that her childhood crush—who broke her heart—is now her boss. If only she could stop daydreaming about him.

Wayne Whitmore grew up on the wrong side of the tracks and worked hard to get where he’s at in life. Even though he enjoys being principal at the small town high school, he dreams of coaching baseball. When his best friend asks him to watch over his little sister at her new job at Wayne’s school, he agrees. What he doesn’t count on is how she’s grown from the pig tailed kid who told him she loved him, to the woman who breaks his concentration with her beauty and smile. Unable to get over his fascination, and afraid he’ll ruin his friend’s trust, Wayne applies for his dream job—one that will take him far away. One night while decorating the school gymnasium for an upcoming sock hop, Lizzie and Wayne find themselves alone. They share a kiss and Lizzie realizes her childhood crush for Wayne has never died. Wayne decides he doesn’t want to let Lizzie get away. Can they come to terms with their secret love and then overcome the other secrets they are hiding in order to get what they each want? Or is their timing for love still off?

EXCERPT:

She blinked away the heat of tears forming at the back of her eyes. Their conversation had grown too serious. She needed to lighten things up a bit. “Remember when we used to play ‘What if?’”

He laughed. “What if Lizzie wore a dress?”

“Either she was going to church, or her mom was having a ladies’ social.” Lizzie giggled. “Ricky hated that game.”

“He’d get so mad when you’d start it.” He made the final cut on a small snowflake and added it to the pile before him.

“What if Wayne couldn’t throw his famous curve ball?”

“The school trophy case would be one trophy short. What if Lizzie wasn’t teaching here?”

She pouted. “She’d be sad. I have no idea what I’d be doing if I hadn’t found a job here. What does Lizzie have to do to show Wayne she thanks him?” She winked, enjoying their fun.

He cleared his throat. “What if Wayne said Lizzie owed him a kiss?”

Her belly trembled. What if?

“What if he stole one?” His voice lowered and he leaned in.

“Why don’t you find out?” she whispered.

Weekend Writing Warriors ~ 7/20/14 Beleaguered ~ A Better Solution

weekend_writing_warriors_header3

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors!

Beleaguered, the novel-length final installment of my medieval serial novel, Time Enough to Love, released this past week!  Hooray! So of course this week I’m spotlighting it again. 🙂

Beleaguered3

I thought I’d find a happier snippet to tempt you with this week.  This is from the first chapter, where Alyse and Thomas are finally allowed to disembark from the Phillipa, where they’ve been waiting all day for their turn to go ashore. This snippet takes up where last week’s left off.  (I have been somewhat creative again to get this whole bit in eight sentences.) 🙂

Bealeaguered_ThomasWhen Thomas arrived beside her, she reached for his arm, lest she topple over.

“Why does the land move so?” she asked fearfully, trying to remain standing while her feet seemed to wander to and fro.

He laughed and held her steady. “We have been moving constantly for the past ten days. ’Tis the ground that stays still while your body thinks it continues to move. ’Twill pass in a few moments.” Then, to her surprise, he scooped her up in his arms and started for the last waiting carriage saying, “I believe this is a better solution to your predicament, madam.”

Laughing, she wrapped her arms around his neck, pleased with his public attentions to her.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this snippet from Beleaguered, which is now available from Smashwords, ARe and Amazon.  It will be available elsewhere as well shortly.

When death holds sway in the world, can even the greatest love survive?

Finally in France, Alyse and Thomas return to their roles as courtiers to Princess Joanna. Their passion for one another continues to smolder hot and deep—until one fateful encounter changes everything.

During a formal banquet, Alyse must share an intimate dance with Geoffrey, her first love. His searing touch proves her love and desire for him is as strong as when they first met. Tormented by this revelation, Alyse is bitterly torn between the love of her life and her love for her husband.

Into this agonizing situation, the disaster of the Black Death rears its head, decimating the princess’s retinue and threatening all their lives. Alyse, Thomas and Geoffrey must try to save the princess from the ravening disease but at a dire cost to themselves. With her world plunged into chaos, Alyse struggles with her feelings for both of the men she loves. But which love will survive?

In the mean time, check out the rest of the Warriors here.  There’s some fantastic snippets to be read.
