O is for Order of Precedence

From Alexander Jacob's work "A Complete English Peerage"

From Alexander Jacob’s work “A Complete English Peerage”

Those Americans reading or writing historical romance have at some point run into the baffling system of English titles and orders of precedence. The system was created to allow every person to know exactly what their position in society was in relation to everyone else. Based on title and distinction, the ranking can be confusing, unless one grew up learning it. For those of us not of the nobility, here is a quick look at the basic order of precedence.

This ordering would be used on any occasion, from the order in which guests would go in to dinner, to who bows to whom.

Naturally, the king, queen, prince, and royal dukes, and their wives and children are first in line. I’ll list the rest in order of precedent. The wife has the same precedence as her husband. Daughters have the same precedence as sons.

Dukes

Marquises

Eldest Sons of dukes – No matter what the courtesy title is.

Earls

Eldest sons of marquises – No matter what the courtesy title is.

Younger sons of dukes.

Viscounts

Eldest sons of earls – No matter what the courtesy title is.

Younger sons of marquises

Barons

Eldest sons of viscounts – they have no courtesy title

Younger sons of earls

Baronets

Eldest sons of barons – also no courtesy title

Younger sons of viscounts

Knights

Eldest sons of baronets – no courtesy title.

Younger sons of Barons

Landed gentry.

If you would like more information on the orders of precedence, the article “British Titles and Orders of Precedence” in Edwardian Promenade provides the exact order from the Sovereign down to Wives of Gentlemen entitled to bear arms.

Occasionally, the order of precedence can be changed. In 2012, just after the royal wedding of Prince William to Kate Middleton, Queen Elizabeth changed the order of precedence so that the Duchess of Cambridge, when not accompanied by her husband, must curtsy to the “blood princesses:” Princess Anne, Princess Alexandra, Princess Beatrice, and Princess Eugenie. For more on this update, see the article, “Queen Updates Order of Precedence and Who Bows to Whom.”

The Writer’s Business Plan by Patricia Green

800px-Schreiben_mit_Kugelschreiber

My great friend and fellow author, Patricia Green, had this wonderful and informative post on her blog the other day that I really want to share with you.  I think many of us could better learn how to approach writing as a business using her ideas about how to construct a business plan.

The Writer’s Business Plan by Patricia Green

One of the things I incorporated into my writing career the year before I decided I’d like to go full time, was a business plan. In my former life as a technical writer, I’d written many for other businesses, but never one for myself. I consulted with my husband, who is my best councillor, and wrote it up. I refer to it whenever I’m discouraged or confused about where to go next, and to remind me of my overarching goals with my writing business.  Read more…

Bealeaguered_ThomasHe grunted, and his thrusts became quick, staccato beats. She met him stroke for stroke, their naked bellies slapping out the mounting rhythm.

Thomas shuddered and groaned as his hot seed spilled inside her, furthering her sense of contentment and afterward, they lay entwined together, arms and legs ensnared in loving embrace.

Release Day for Beleaguered!

Today is a very special day.  Today Beleaguered, the final installment of my serial novel, Time Enough to Love, officially releases.

Beleaguered3

It’s kind of an emotional day for me because this was the very first romance novel I wrote and because it was a first novel–and therefore pretty bad and exceedingly long–I was very afraid it would never see the light of day.

Time Enough to Love took me six months to write, starting in January, 2009 and writing THE END on July 28, 2009. Originally it was 187,000 words long and was your typically bad first novel. Headhopping all over the place, repeated words and phrases, anachronistic words. There was even one whole chapter that I took out upon first revision because absolutely nothing happened in the whole chapter!

But this was the work of my heart and I didn’t give up on it. I found out that a typical historical novel was about 100K words, and 120K was maybe the top end. And though I managed to cut it down from 187K to 160K in the first revision, I knew it was still too long. A colleague suggested publishing it in installments and that then became my mission in life.

Fortunately, the novel divided pretty neatly into two novellas, Betrothal and Betrayal, and the longer Beleaguered. I found the most wonderful editor, Danielle Fine, who also created the beautiful covers for me, and she and I have worked hard for over a year to take a “first novel” and turn it into a publishable novel. That mission is now complete.

The first two novellas were around 47-50K, and Book 3 is actually novel length at 71K, so I think I’ve added some back. 🙂 When the print version comes out, it’s going to be a BIG book. 🙂

If you’re interested in Beleaguered, or the whole Time Enough to Love novel, I’ve got the blurb below and buy links for all three books.

BLURB FOR BELEAGUERED:

When death holds sway in the world, can even the greatest love survive?

Finally in France, Alyse and Thomas return to their roles as courtiers to Princess Joanna. Their passion for one another continues to smolder hot and deep—until one fateful encounter changes everything.

During a formal banquet, Alyse must share an intimate dance with Geoffrey, her first love. His searing touch proves Alyse’s love and desire for him is as strong as when they first met. Tormented by this revelation, Alyse is bitterly torn between the love of her life and her love for her husband.

Into this agonizing situation, the disaster of the Black Death rears its head, decimating the princess’s retinue and threatening all their lives. Alyse, Thomas and Geoffrey must try to save the princess from the ravening disease but at a dire cost to themselves. With her world plunged into chaos, Alyse struggles with her feelings for both of the men she loves. But which love will survive?

EXCERPT FROM BELEAGUERED:

“There were dead rats on the dock.”

“Alyse!” Thomas’s outraged tone brought censure for her bald statement, but she cared not.

Geoffrey had trapped her into speaking with him or risk being rude and bringing about the displeasure of her husband. Common sense warned her to avoid all contact, including conversation, with Geoffrey Longford. Since he had made that impossible in this instance, she chose her own bold method of bringing an end to the conversation—make it as unpleasant as possible.

“Well, ’tis true, Thomas. We passed them on the way to the carriage.”

Geoffrey laughed, apparently determined not to take offense. “Aye, lady, you will find them living and dead all over the town, not just at the quay.” Turning to Thomas, he added, “There were fewer of them at Port St. Croix than at St. Lucie. ’Tis why Sir Robert decided to land the nobles here. Where the men-at-arms and the long bowmen came ashore, the dead rats were almost knee-deep in places.”

“Lord have mercy!” Alyse shuddered, sudden pity arising for the soldiers.

“They have had a plague of them recently here in Bordeaux, I am told.” Geoffrey’s gaze lingered on her face, a quiet satisfaction alight in the blue depths. “Brought into port aboard foreign ships. You would probably have to fire the entire town to get rid of them.”

Alyse trembled, not only at the thought of the unsavory animals running through the town, but at the look in Geoffrey’s eyes that made her stomach clench and her womanhood throb. She drew closer to Thomas, a potent misery stealing through her for the first time in days.

The men continued to talk, but she paid them no heed, caught in a private hell from which she had believed herself safe. She would have to be vigilant to ensure neither she nor Thomas were burned by the fire that had been kindled months ago between her and Geoffrey Longford. She could not trust any of them now—neither her husband to keep his jealously in check, nor Geoffrey to cease his pursuit of her, nor herself to keep him at bay.

She had believed she loved Thomas enough to lay the ghost of Geoffrey to rest in their bed. But from the moment she had seen him on deck this morning, her beloved still, she knew deep in her very core that Geoffrey had been right: it would never be over between them until they were dead and in the tomb.

This realization frightened her beyond all reason. It was as though she had been two people in one body all day, each belonging to a different man. As long as they lived that would never change. She played with fire each time she met with or spoke to Geoffrey, and one day the banked embers would flame up and consume them both.

There would be hell to pay one way or the other. The only question was how much damage would be wrought. Immortal souls hung in the balance, waiting for Judgment Day.

All three Books of Time Enough to Love are available on Smashwords and Amazon.

Weekend Writing Warriors ~ 7/13/14 Beleaguered ~ Going Ashore

weekend_writing_warriors_header3

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors!

Tomorrow is Release Day for Beleaguered, the novel-length final installment of my medieval serial novel, Time Enough to Love! So of course this week I’m spotlighting it. 🙂

Beleaguered3

I thought I’d find a happier snippet to tempt you with this week.  This is from the first chapter, where Alyse and Thomas are finally allowed to disembark from the Phillipa, where they’ve been waiting all day for their turn to go ashore. Thomas speaks first. (I have been somewhat creative with my punctuation to get this whole bit in sight sentences.) 🙂

3238512_s“Not so fast, sweet, for the planking is steep. ’Twould not be a welcome excitement to have to fish you out of the Garonne.”

“But we are nearly there.” She strained forward, pulling him like a horse in harness, unable to contain her eagerness.

“Go with God then, sweet,” he said, laughing, and released her hand.

Suddenly freed, she raced down the planks and onto the dock several steps ahead of her husband. When she reached the pier, she raised her arms and twirled around, her silver and blue gown spinning out around her like a quicksilver fan. She stopped spinning abruptly as the ground moved below her feet as if of its own accord.

I hope you’ve enjoyed this snippet from Beleaguered, which is now available from Smashwords and Amazon.  It will be available elsewhere as well shortly.

N is for Nabob

A quick little Alphabet Post today as I prepare for the release of Beleaguered!

Sometimes in historical romances you will find refrences to a particular class or designation of man called a “nabob.”

According to Merriman-Webster, “nabob” is a Hindi word for provincial governor in India. I’ve run across this word in romances taking place in India—the works of M. M. Kaye are brought fondly to mind—but also in romances set in England during the Georgian and Victorian ages. The word also has the connotation of a very rich person, especially one who returned to Europe from India with a fortune.

In England especially, the term was applied to men who had become immensely wealthy in

The East India House was the Headquarters for the East India Company

The East India House was the Headquarters for the East India Company

India through the East India Company and who returned to England and purchased seats in Parliament. The fear was that these men would in fact use their wealth to corrupt Parliament.

Nabobs were mainly of the merchant class and although they wielded enormous power and had great social standing in India, when they returned home to England, they were derided, criticized, and found socially wanting. Many of these merchants had taken Indian ladies as wives or mistresses and had mixed-race children. These women, “nabobinas,” were social outcasts and their husbands had little or no social status.

One significant reason why nabobs were shunned by British society was the perception that they were “decadent” in their “oriental tastes.” This perception began with the acquisition of Indian wives, but extended to the desire for diamonds, gold, precious jewels, certain foreign fabrics, and artifacts that were considered “oriental” in nature.

The nabobs who returned to England often fared poorly, many losing their fortunes through vices such as gambling. Even those who tried to live quietly as country gentlemen were shunned by their neighbors and kept at a distance. As we have often seen, money was never a major source of social acceptance in England and the plight of the nabobs is a brilliant illustration of that circumstance.

Welcome back to Horny Hump Day!

This weekend should bring the long-awaited (at least by me) release of Beleaguered, the final installment of my medieval serial novel, Time Enough to Love.

Beleaguered3

In this snippet, as the plague rages, an angry Geoffrey has caught Alyse fleeing toward her chamber.

She raised her face defiantly to him and, given his current mood, she braced for a blow in return.

Instead, he swooped down, crushing his lips against hers.

She tried to shake him free, but he took possession of her mouth with deep thrusts of his tongue.

If you’d like more, come by Weekend Writing Warriors this Sunday for more Beleaguered!

Interview with Landon from Andrea Cooper’s Son of Dragons, Book 2 of Legends of Oblivion

9781440581267

Today I’d like to welcome, Landon, the hero from Andrea Cooper’s second book in her Son of Dragons series to Jenna’s Journal.

1. What is your greatest strength? Greatest weakness? How have they shaped your life?

My greatest strength is loyalty. It is also my greatest weakness. I am loyal to my friends, because I have so few of them. Too many only placate me because I am a prince. When I find someone who doesn’t bow to me just because of my title, it is refreshing. However, being loyal to my father and his last wishes before his illness left him unable to communicate or move, has left me betrothed to a woman I’ve never seen.

2. What first drew you to your hero/heroine?

Hearing my liegeman’s tell of how Mirhana, this warrior maiden, had saved him from a deadwalker. I was intrigued on meeting her—this woman who fights the undead—saves the innocents and doesn’t bask in the glory and praise of her accomplishments. She was a mystery. Then I saw her across the street and her emerald eyes haunted me. I had to know her.

3. Would you like your writer to create a sequel for you? Why or why not?

Yes! In fact, she is revising and rewriting War of Darkness Book 3 in the Legends of Oblivion.

4. What do you do for a living?

I am a prince. So I do what is expected of me. However, I long to be free of responsibilities and shackled inside a palace. To roam the countryside fighting for the people, basking in the sun after a cool bath in the river, and sleeping under the stars.

5. What is your greatest fear?

I fear losing myself in rage. I have to keep calm at all times. Often, I joke to ease the tension of a situation. I cannot allow myself to get upset. When I get angry, bad things happen.

Once, when I rode out with Gillespie, he fell off his horse and was dragged for miles. I remember screaming his name and racing my horse to stop his. My friend lost consciousness.

The next thing I remember, we were at the place doors and I was naked and covered in blood. Pieces of Gillespie’s horse strewn across the ground. My mother told me it was a Griffin. She and father had killed it when we didn’t come home after a few hours. My own horse was so frightened by the encounter it wouldn’t come near me. I gave it as a gift to Gillespie to replace his horse.

6. What is your most prized possession?

The medallion my grandmother gave me. It’s a pendant was a silver dragon twisted around on itself with a ruby as its center and eye.

7. What is most attractive to you about the opposite sex?

Strength. Many may think women are weak, but they are stronger than men give them credit for. Women love and fight fiercer than any man I have ever seen. Do not underestimate them.

8. Have you ever thought about getting a tattoo, what would it be and where

Mirhana already has one. When she emerged from the Dragon Cave and test, an image of a dragonhead formed upon the side of her neck the color of moonlight scales, the body disappearing under her tunic. The sun burst through the horizon and colored the front of the cave. Then the moonlight faded and the image of the dragon was gone.

I’m thinking of having a smaller version of Mirhana’s dragon tattoo upon my right arm.

Thank you so much, Landon, for sharing some of your personal information with us. 🙂

Blurb for Son of Dragons: In a time of false peace, the dead rise as soldiers for the Warloc’s scheme. For thousands of years he has stood ready for the final battle. Though the witch and her cursed Elvin have destroyed his physical body, now with his protégé, he has honed a new way to wage war. Shunned by her own people and weary-hearted from centuries of lost loves, Elvin warrior Mirhana scours the land to silence the undead. Her heart has turned as cold as the sword she wields, until a prince seeks her aid. Never has Prince Landon met a woman like Mirhana. Both beautiful and deadly, she haunts his dreams. The battle at hand becomes more enchanting than fighting to remain true to his unseen betrothed. When a traitor emerges, new alliances are tested and the only remaining hope is to follow the prophecy and find the … Son of Dragons.

Excerpt from Son of Dragons:

Clean from the bath, Landon let the air from the open window dry his hair. Dressed only in trousers, he leaned against the windowsill.

He thought he smelled the hint of roses and heat on the breeze. Movement from the street below caught his eye. He leaned out, squinting into the night.

Torches lined the cobbled street corners. A cloaked figure waited. Then the innkeeper rushed outside. His hands flew in gestures as the figure nodded.

Then he pointed to the window where Landon watched. At the same instant, the cloaked figure followed his finger’s path to Landon. Green eyes that seemed to glow met his.

Landon jumped up and cursed when his head hit the bottom of the window. When he looked back, both figures were gone.

Thinking the innkeeper would send guards, he waited with his sword in hand and his stare riveted on the door. No one came. He must be getting paranoid, thinking there was a ghost or enemy around every corner. His eyelids grew heavy as he waited for a fight that failed to materialize. Finally, he rolled his shoulders back to ease out the tension.

Still, he couldn’t stop thinking about those piercing emerald eyes. They’d belonged to a woman; he could tell. There was intelligence and cunning in them. Her stare felt as though she saw through the façade he often wore as prince and to please others, and into hiskajh.

A woman who was not afraid, but used to being feared. It unnerved him, yet excited him. His pulse quickened and his loins tightened at the thought of those eyes filled with passion for him.

Better get some sleep before the night was gone. Tomorrow, he’d tell Gillespie about what he saw. He doubted he could explain those captivating green eyes that continued to haunt him even now.

Bio Pic 300x400Andrea’s Bio: Andrea has always created characters and stories. But it wasn’t until she was in her late twenties that she started writing novels.

What happened that ignited the writing flame in her fingers? Divorced, and disillusioned by love songs and stories. They exaggerate. She thought. Love and Romance are not like that in the real world. Then she met her husband and realized, yes love and romance are exactly like the songs and stories say. She is now a happy wife, and a mom to three kids (two boys and a girl).

Andrea writes paranormal and historical romance. When not writing or reading, one may find Andrea dancing in Zumba.

She believes in the power of change and counting each moment as a blessing. But most importantly, she believes in love.
