“Let me whisper sweet nothings in your ear.”

Welcome back to Sweet Nothings, a little shadow of Sweet Saturday Samples, until that sweet treat starts back up.  Until that happens, I’m doing a little weekly blog where you can post a “sweet” excerpt  (PG 13 or milder) from one of your works.  Remember: please  hold the excerpt to 350 words or less. But if your cutting needs just a few more words, that’s okay too.  I won’t be counting. LOL

rnc_iojx1047a-300

Today’s “Sweet Nothing” is another excerpt from my (hopefully) soon-to-be released Victorian historical novel, As Long As You’re Mine.  This excerpt is not exactly “sweet” although it’s not terribly racy either. Samantha and Rafe are discussing their situation after Rafe has come from a visit to her father.

Rafe peered at her, curious. The animation that sprang into her face transformed her from a merely beautiful woman to one of unparalleled loveliness. Like watching life breathed into a china doll.

“But why ever not? You cannot have been afraid of him? Father blusters but seldom bites.” She paused. “Well, that may not quite be the truth, but if you stand up to him it works out best. He can’t be allowed to intimidate you or he’ll make you feel like Goliath has trampled you. So,” she looked up at him with total confidence, “what is your plan?”

“As I stated to your father earlier, Lady Samantha, I plan to marry you.”

Her brows furrowed and she tilted her head to the side. “But you just said you don’t want to marry me!”

“I did say that. I do not wish to marry you. But after the trick you pulled last night, I have no choice. You are ruined in the eyes of society and I will be also if I don’t marry you.” Rafe tried not to sound harsh, but bitterness at the situation stole into his tone.

“But this is all a mistake, damn it! It isn’t your fault.” There was anguish in her voice.

“A lady does not swear, Samantha.” Thank God men did.

“Well, this lady does, Mr. Beauregard.” She began to pace wildly, gesturing with those expressive hands. “I cannot believe you are so weak-willed that you will take a stranger to wife because it is what ‘honor’ calls for.”

“From what I hear, you’d like me better if I were that weak-willed.”

She whirled on him. “How dare you, sir!”

Rafe smiled and narrowed his eyes. “Let us revisit what you dared last night, my lady, before either of us becomes indignant. Let us remember that I awakened to a most insistent hand on my shoulder and then…”

“Don’t you continue, sir!”

“We certainly continued then.” Rafe’s mind burned with the memory of her hot mouth. Unconsciously, he moved toward her.

COVER REVEAL!

On The 12th Date of Christmas

By Nikki Lynn Barrett

Contemporary holiday romance

Expected release date: November 8, 2013

Amazon

Blurb:

After being mugged, Robin Sorenson is left shaken and her spirit in humanity broken. Worse, she’s not sure how to deal with the new anxieties or who to confide in, since she’s always preached to pick oneself up and move on. Yeah, she’s been the go to girl when anyone’s had problems.
Christmas is coming, and her belief in magic and miracles has faded.

Then Jonas comes back.

Jonas Aimes made a mistake. A big one, when he walked away from Robin a year earlier. He’d loved her, always had and still does, but his desire to please his aging and strict parents took precedence. Back from the overseas internship they’d struggled to get him in, he plans on winning Robin back. What he didn’t count on was discovering the shell of the vivacious woman he’d loved.

Broken.

Remembering her love of Christmas, Jonas pulls the holiday heartstrings. What? All is fair and love and war. Right?

Twelve days, Twelve Dates.

Robin is speechless when Jonas not only refuses to leave her alone, but dares her to accept his cheesy holiday themed challenge. Twelve dates to give him a chance to prove he loves her and is never leaving her again.

But in the season known for miracles can Robin find the magic needed to open her heart and faith once more…or will she forever wonder about the ghost of the Christmas past that could have been?

Goodreads Link: http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/18483703-on-the-12th-date-of-christmas

Excerpt from On the 12th Date of Christmas:

The hostess walked up to the table and took their order. After she disappeared, Jonas reached for her hand again. “I’m not sure where to begin. I could apologize profusely, but does it do any good? I should never have let my family pressure me into the choice, but I can’t change what I did. It took being so far away to realize just what I’d missed. You put up with a heck of a lot of immaturity from me last year and I can’t imagine what you were feeling.”

“Jonas-”

“Please, let me get this out. The experience from the internship was great, but there were a few things that I saw that really gave me a whole new perspective. I missed you, and even though I knew I would, I missed you far more than I ever imagined.”  His hands covered hers, sending a chill down her back.

“I can’t just pick up where we left off and think things would be okay.” She said simply, not trying to be mean, but honest. “Cant and won’t.”

He nodded. “I get that. I’m not expecting anything. I just had to tell you what I felt. I would be an idiot to think we could pick up and that everything would be fine, because I know that would never be the case.”

The sincerity in his voice was something she never expected. He watched her with those dark eyes that never turned away from her face, and she knew he meant business.

A smile lit up his face. “Give me twelve dates.”

Robin raised a brow. “Twelve dates? What are you talking about?” Now he was just acting strange. Kind of cute, but definitely strange.

“Twelve dates to show you just how much you mean to me. On the twelfth date, if you don’t feel like we could at least try to work things out, I’ll leave you alone. If I don’t at least give this a shot, then I’m going to have a lot of regrets.”

“Twelve dates. You seriously sound like someone from one of those cheesy films they air this time of the year.”

He feigned hurt. “Cheesy? Ouch. That’s a blow to the heart.”

“Twelve dates isn’t a long time to decide.” God, he was being serious about this, wasn’t he? Twelve dates? How in the world did he plan to try to show her anything with only twelve dates? The idea sounded cute, charming and sweet, it really did, but how did he plan  to pull it off?

“Maybe for people who don’t have our history, true. But we’ve known each other since high school. Come on, what could it hurt?”

A lot, actually. She kept the words to herself.

“Of course, we can talk and spend time together outside of the twelve dates, so it’s not like we’re limited.” Jonas continued. He circled her palm with his thumb.  “And right now doesn’t count as one of the dates.”

Robin laughed. Butterflies danced around in her belly.  Oh, good grief. What happened to her promise just a few hours ago? To focus on her own life and not get wrapped up in a man?

Okay, just because you agree to this doesn’t mean you’re changing your mind.  They’re just dates. Sure, dates with a man I loved, but they’re still just dates regardless.

“What about your family? What will they say?”

A storm of anger built up in his eyes as they darkened. “I don’t care what they say anymore, Robin. My family shouldn’t have so much sway on how I feel about you. I should have realized that a long time ago. They don’t get to choose anymore.”

Though it’s not a series, and On the 12th Date of Christmas is a standalone book, Robin makes her first appearance in The Secret Santa Wishing Well.  Readers have been asking for her story and of course, more of Cheyenne, Jacob and the kids.

Blurb:  The Secret Santa Wishing Well:

flatecover (4)

The magic of Christmas has been lost to Jacob Winston. At the suggestion of his ill sister, Jacob takes a job as a Secret Santa at the mall, hoping to restore his Christmas spirit. Even that doesn’t seem to work, until a special little boy ambles up to make a very special wish… Cheyenne Jensen is struggling to raise her two kids without the help of her ex-husband who refuses to acknowledge his daughter’s existence and doesn’t provide for the son he does. This Christmas is shaping up to be as heartbreaking as the last, until her son Ben’s kind actions lead a stranger to them. Ah, but it’s Christmas time and the magic has begun. When Jacob and Cheyenne meet, neither can deny their immediate attraction to one another. As situations arise that require they spend more time together, their feelings grow stronger and stronger. With Christmas fast approaching, the pair learn what matters most in life. Now, if only they could ditch the ghost of Christmases past. Maybe this holiday will bring some wishes come true- for everyone after all.

Spotlight: Road Rage by Jessi Gage

roadrage

What is your biggest fear? Mine is causing a car accident. I don’t tend to be an anxious person, but driving makes me anxious. Any time I’m trying a new route for the first time or venturing downtown or needing to merge on a crowded freeway…yeah, those are the situations that make my blood pressure spike. In some areas, I’ve got confidence galore (writing, being a mommy, a friend, a wife). But as a driver, I always feel like the lowest man on the totem pole, like I’m in everyone’s way.

My anxiety about challenging driving situations was the inspiration for my latest release with Lyrical Press, ROAD RAGE. I decided to take a negative and use my creativity to turn it into a positive. I decided to literally crash a hero and heroine into each other and deal with issues of guilt and healing and love.

Writing ROAD RAGE was therapeutic. It helped me see others on the road, even grumpy or aggressive drivers, as people every bit as worthy of love as the most patient of drivers. We all have our bad days, and maybe, just maybe, an inexcusable act can be forgiven and two souls meant to find each other can create something beautiful out of disaster.

I have a digital copy of ROAD RAGE to give to a commenter, so please, leave a note. Just saying “hi” will get you in the giveaway, but you could also let me know what your biggest fear is OR what book you’ve read where a character does something very bad but finds redemption in love. If I don’t know you, leave your email address!

Thanks for having me today, Jenna!

My pleasure, Jessi!  Now here’s all the information you’ll need to go out and grab a copy of Road Rage!

CONTENT WARNING: Sex with a perfect, imaginary dream girl who really isn’t imaginary

A Lyrical Press Paranormal Romance

Excerpt:

She had to be dead. There were too many checks in the column to keep denying it.

After spending the night on the edge of the man’s mattress, soothing him through his nightmares, she’d found herself back in the fog. Interminable hours later, it still held her prisoner.

She could move her limbs, but had nothing to move against, no foundation, no gravity. She didn’t know whether the person she’d been had believed in heaven or hell, but the fact that this disorienting nothingness clearly wasn’t heaven felt like a betrayal.

“Was I that bad?” she asked the fog. It didn’t answer. “Do you hear me? Anyone? Please!”

Frustration and desperation were her only companions.

“I hate this!” she yelled. The fog swallowed her protest without so much as an echo.

She felt abandoned. Worse than alone. A lonely person at least had a sense of self. She didn’t even have that.

But she’d had the blond man for company, even if just for a night. And she’d had the feeling he’d needed her. Maybe she had some kind of weird commission to comfort people having nightmares, and if she did a good enough job, she could earn her way into heaven. Since that hope stood between her and despair, she clung to it like a lifeline.

Suddenly, the fog thinned. A solid surface came up to meet her feet, and the last of the smoky wisps parted to reveal the man’s room. She was back in her corner.

“Oh, thank God!” She fell to her hands and knees in relief. Being somewhere, anywhere, beat that nothingness. But she had to admit, this room made her feel safe.

As she regained her composure, she noticed the man doing push-ups between the foot of the bed and the dresser, in nothing but a pair of tight, black boxer briefs.

His toes braced on the floor mere inches from her hands. Directly in front of her, his calves and thighs made a long, muscular line to a cotton-hugged rear end. His tanned back flared from a narrow waist to broad, muscular shoulders. Powerful arms bunched deliciously as he pumped the plank of his body up and down. The hair at the nape of his neck curled with perspiration. She had an urge to plant her nose in that moist hair and draw in his scent of Irish Spring soap and summer sunshine.

Virile, masculine flesh filled her vision, and the rhythmic rush of heavy breathing bathed her ears with a sound of life so welcome after the deathly silence of the fog. After hours of sensory deprivation, she greedily feasted her senses.

Before she could think better of it, she extended her hand toward the man’s right foot and stroked a finger down his sole, tracing the arch from heel to ball. His skin was warm and taut, slightly pink, and toughened with every step he’d ever taken. The touch sent a thrill of connection through her while at the same time she cringed back, fearing his response.

He gave no sign he’d felt anything.

Disappointment settled in her belly. Some sort of reaction would have been nice.

She thought about attempting something more insistent, like a pinch, but the man finished his pushups and got to his feet. He moved out of reach and bent at the waist to stretch his hamstrings. On the

one hand, being dead sucked. On the other hand, if she got to drool over buns like that as part of her afterlife, she supposed she could make peace with it.

Social Sunday: Season Premieres

Last week I got completely away from promotion to post about my current favorite commercial. (Love those hamsters!)  I got a great response and so I’m going to try to make Social Sunday a new weekend post.

This week, for the first time in years, I succumbed to Season Premiere Fever.  I’m sure we’ve all had one or two (or several) television programs that we’ve waited for with bated breath over the summer, anticipating the Fall Premiere after their Season Finale in the spring.  When I was very young I remember getting physically ill when I realized two premieres were coming on at one time and I would have to choose which one to watch (before the days of DVR of course).

downloadAs I’ve said before I’m not watching much TV these days because it takes time away from writing.  However, over the summer at my cousin’s house, I happened to see a recording of the Season Finale of Law & Order SVU where Detective Olivia Benson is grabbed by a sadistic psycho bent on torturing and murdering her.  Let us say it caught my attention.

So I was primed and ready on Wednesday night to watch the two-hour season premiere. My daughters are also avid fans so we all piled up in the master bedroom (my husband download (1)isn’t into that show and had the living room TV tuned into something else) waiting for the show to come on.

I once again felt that thrill of anticipation, so long denied.  And then the opening scenes and that famous “DUH DUH.”  I’m not sure which sensation I enjoyed most–the excitement of watching or simply feeling a part of a wider group experience.

My daughters were, of course, tweeting about the show and one yelled out “OMG!  There’s a #SaveBenson!”

images

Awesome!  So I got a blow by blow commentary from her during commercials of what other fans were saying.  And it was interesting that the actor who played the psychopath was tweeting along with everyone else.

Of course, we also called my cousin during commercials to talk about the episode.  And we all cheered loudly when Benson managed to turn the tables.

I have to say the premiere of SVU was one of the most enjoyable evenings I’ve spent recently.  Writing, while extremely satisfying, is a lonely occupation.  The premiere gave me the seldom gleaned chance to be part of a larger group of like-minded people, all enjoying the drama unfolding on the small (or large) screen.  I think I really need to pay more attention to season premieres from now on.  This one was a great time!

Have you had Season Premieres (past or present) that have stood out in your mind as memorable?

Sweet Nothings–09/28/13 As Long As You’re Mine

Secrets by Karl Witkowski

Secrets by

“Let me whisper sweet nothings in your ear.”

Welcome back to Sweet Nothings, a little shadow of Sweet Saturday Samples, until that sweet treat starts back up.  Until that happens, I’m doing a little weekly blog where you can post a “sweet” excerpt  (PG 13 or milder) from one of your works.  Remember: please  hold the excerpt to 350 words or less. But if your cutting needs just a few more words, that’s okay too.  I won’t be counting. LOL

rnc_iojx1047a-300

Today’s “Sweet Nothing” is an excerpt from my Victorian historical novel, As Long As You’re Mine.  In this snippet, Rafe has planned a little surprise for Samantha.

Valrosa.

Just beyond Oxford lay South Leigh and Valrosa.

All these years and I still remember every room, every piece of furniture, every rose bush. She leaned her forehead against the glass and sighed. So near…

“Samantha?” Rafael’s voice sounded strange in her ears. They had scarcely spoken all day. Since this morning she had either been pondering schemes to entice Rafael to divorce her or moping at the thought of leaving England. The result was a subdued silence between them.

He rose from the seat beside her and held out his hand. “Come on, sweetheart. This is our stop.”

She turned and blinked at him. “Our stop? But we’re not anywhere near Liverpool. We just passed Oxford and the next stop is—”

“South Leigh, yes. We’re spending the night at Valrosa.”

Samantha gazed up at him, convinced she hadn’t heard correctly. “You’re taking me to Valrosa?”

He nodded and reached overhead to grab her vanity case.

Without thinking, Samantha rose and hurled herself onto his defenseless chest. The momentum shoved them against the door with enough force to rattle the glass. “Oh, Rafe! Thank you, thank you!”

He put his arm around her and brushed his lips over her hair. “You’re quite welcome, my dear.” She could hear a smile in his voice. “But if you don’t turn me loose soon we’re liable to miss the stop.”

She jerked her head back, heat in her cheeks. Backing away from him, she glanced up to see his mouth pucker in restrained amusement. He was always laughing at her.

Well, let him.

She didn’t care what he did if only he would take her home.

Okay, now it’s your turn to share a “Sweet Nothing.” 🙂

Switching gears this week back to my WIP As Long As You’re Mine

Lady Samantha has enacted a bold plan to compromise herself so her father will allow her to marry the man of her choice.  Samantha has gone to the rather extreme length of crawling into bed with the man.

She moaned and writhed as he explored all the wonderfully sensitive places she’d never known she possessed. He cupped and kneaded her, until her breast seemed to pulse with an energy of its own.  His hand continued its descent over waist and hip, leaving heated trails on her flesh that lingered and throbbed.

Hope you enjoyed this little tease from As Long As You’re Mine. 🙂

Sarah Ballance: Crazy Puritan Sex (It Happened. A LOT.)

It’s no secret the colonial Puritans had a rather unique way of thinking—that whole witch hysteria thing ascertains as much—but crazy sex? It can’t be! Well, that’s what I thought before I started researching my new historical romance, HER WICKED SIN. I was WRONG, you guys. So, so wrong! Underneath those dull, unflattering outfits they were as crazy as the rest of us (and in some cases, far crazier than most). Here’s the proof.

20-40% of Puritan Brides were Pregnant before the Wedding

The exact number depends on who you ask, but let’s think about this. The chance of getting pregnant during a given month is relatively small—about 25%, even while actively trying to conceive. The fact that 20-40% of these young brides were with child on their wedding day means there was a LOT of premarital sex happening. And just HOW it happened…well, read on.

It’s all the Man’s Fault

Puritans expected awesome sex to rock the marital bed—so much so that a lack of fulfillment was considered grounds for divorce. A cheating man was most often charged with fornication, the punishment for which was commonly a public flogging. Women, however, were charged with adultery and could be put to death. (For the same crime. Asshats.) Anyway, when a woman strayed some of the blame fell to her husband. In one such documented case, the husband was found guilty of “exposing his wife to such temptations” due to his extended absence. The cheaters were whipped and jailed, while the husband had to pay his wife’s fines and sit in the stockade.

They had Orgies…Incestuous Ones

Group sex was a crime to begin with, but this one has Jerry Springer written all over it. In a documented case, one woman and four men hit the bump and grind together. Two of the men got it going and another resisted a bit, leaving the lovely lady to go at it with her own brother. I’m not sure what the resistor was doing—probably taking notes since he’s the one who told on them—but he goes down with rest of them as part of this infamous tryst. They were all whipped, by the way, except the voyeur. He was merely found “faulty” for witnessing the event.

Good—er, Bad—Native Lovin’

Every now and then some of the Goodwives extended rather generously of themselves to the Natives. Some were caught, and some were caught repeatedly. One wife was found to have enjoyed “dalliance diverse tymes” with a Native, who was later determined to have been seduced by the wicked woman. Another wife was fined and whipped—not the same Native, by the way—while he walked away with nothing more than a new notch in his tent pole.

Gettin’ Down on the Farm

When one finds oneself lacking in virginal young ladies, willing family members, or naughty Natives, there’s relief to be found in the barnyard…or so thought a 16 year old servant boy, who was caught servicing a mare. And a cow, two goats, a number of sheep, and two calves. And what really got these folks in a tizzy—not that buggary wasn’t a horrific crime in itself—was the fact not all of these animals were willing females. And it gets even better! This young man also had his way with a turkey. A turkey…on Thanksgiving Day.

But that’s not the most shocking buggary story stemming from the Puritan and Pilgrim colonists. George Spencer was an ugly, balding servant with one glass eye. He was also suspected of fornicating with animals—a fact some considered validated when a sow gave birth to a one-eyed piglet. Naturally this proved one-eyed George was dear ol’ dad, and he was subsequently executed for “fathering” the faulty bacon.

In a similar case, Thomas Hogg (you can’t make this stuff up) spent several months in prison for frequent rolls in the hay with his four-legged friends. When a sow gave birth to two deformed piglets, the immediate outcry was that they resembled Hogg himself. However, Hogg never confessed to fathering these poor ugly piglets and the required two witnesses never came forward, so Hogg didn’t face charges for that particular crime.

Clearly these tales speak for a few—many Puritans, I’m sure, were as droll as school kids have been led to believe—but if nothing else, this goes to show they lusted. (Lusted like fiends, some of them!) But not all Puritan lust was felonious. My new historical romance, HER WICKED SIN, looks at the other side of desire—one where passion ignites, lies are perpetuated, scandal ensures…and lives are changed.

And all without a turkey in sight.

SALEM, MA 1692

On a moonless night, he rides into the winter forest on his beast as black as midnight….

Dashing stranger, Henry Dunham, comes to Salem on a mysterious errand, but is thrown from his horse in the dead of night and rescued by the local Puritan midwife, Lydia Colson.

Haunted by her past, Lydia is running from her own dark secrets, avoiding intrusive questions by pretending her dead husband is simply…away. But when she and Henry are caught in a compromising situation, one punishable by Puritan law, he saves her from scandal by claiming to be her errant spouse…and claiming her bed.

Forced to fake a marriage, Lydia and Henry find their passion overwhelming and their vows a little too real. As their lies become truths, a witch hunt closes in on Lydia, threatening not only their burgeoning love, but her life.

Her Wicked Sin | Excerpt

“Willard, you beast.” A round of profanity followed the utterance. Though the stranger’s words were foul, they offered for his equine companion both comfort and reassurance. Their soothing cadence eased the alarm from the horse’s eyes, leading his ears to relax from their pinned state.

Lydia found herself enchanted by the man’s tones and by his obvious affection for the horse.

He shifted in the leaves, still facing away, and he had yet to acknowledge her. She should flee. She had freed him from his quandary, and his voice tinged itself not with pain, but with humor. She would feel no remorse for moving past, yet her feet did not budge.

If she remained silent, would he not know her there? No, eventually he would wonder what held the reins aloft. She watched, waiting for that moment. Through the profound darkness, she noticed his hair was a nutty brown and longer than that of a Puritan man, though its richness showed no trace of the powder worn by many wealthy travelers. He was a study of contrasts, this man. For all of his finery, he seemed to shun the ways of society, and his roguish nature appealed to those innermost desires she had thought long lost. Her husband, as he were, had ruined her womanhood.

This stranger, in the most insignificant ways, had roused it.

Sarah BallanceAbout Sarah Ballance

Sarah and her husband of what he calls “many long, long years” live on the mid-Atlantic coast with their six young children, all of whom are perfectly adorable when they’re asleep. She never dreamed of becoming an author, but as a homeschooling mom, she often jokes she writes fiction because if she wants anyone to listen to her, she has to make them up. (As it turns out, her characters aren’t much better than the kids). When not buried under piles of laundry, she may be found adrift in the Atlantic (preferably on a boat) or seeking that ever-elusive perfect writing spot where not even the kids can find her.

She loves creating unforgettable stories while putting her characters through an unkind amount of torture—a hobby that has nothing to do with living with six children. (Really.) Though she adores nail-biting mystery and edge-of-your-seat thrillers, Sarah writes in many genres including contemporary and ghostly supernatural romance.
