Leaving the sphere from whence you came is never easy.

Even if you don’t like your fellow sphere dwellers, there’s something to be said for the devil you know vs. unknown.

As you’ve probably gathered by now, Trent is part of the uber-rich Long Island Society and instead of settling down with his own kind, he’s fallen for his middle-class Executive Assistant.

Unfortunately, Trent’s people have no problem with destroying Carrie to ‘protect’ him from his own foolishness. There are plenty of acceptable young women in society who might marry him…if he’s really changed. Otherwise, he can become an old bachelor. What he will not do is become involved with the lower classes.

trent 007 sml

What the matrons of society do not want is another low class beauty queen floating about their ballrooms. And yes, a proper house still has a ballroom.

Thus, when an old matron named Madeline waylays him at the airport, Trent is forced to abandon Carrie and let her find her own way home, even after he told he’d pick her up. He has no choice, because he doesn’t dare let Carrie meet this viper. The old matron would rip Carrie into shreds in less than a minute.

Trent hated abandoning Carrie at the airport, but he had no choice. He had to protect her from Madeline.

Old Matron

Here’s an excerpt:

Trent looked outside the limo window, and gathered his bearings. Five more minutes and he’d be rid of the woman.

“You do look out of sorts. I will have Charles pour you a drink when we get home.”

No way in hell would he endure Madeline the whole damn night. “I have matters to attend to tonight.”

She waved him off. “I’m sure they can wait.”

“No, they can’t.”

She sighed heavily. “Then you force me to have our talk here.”

“Talk about what?” The alarms in his head made him want to jump from the moving vehicle.

“Talk about the serious mistake you are making becoming involved with a midget from New Jersey.”

Carrie indoors

And there it was. The disastrous scene she alluded to at the airport. Someone had told her about Carrie. And he had a good idea who.

“Have you been talking to Coco recently?”

“I have. She is most concerned over your obsession with this young girl.”

“I gather we are discussing my employee, Carrie, who lives in New Jersey, but is not a midget, nor is she underage, which your last statement implied.”

“That name sounds correct.”

Coco2

“Rest assured, whatever Coco told you is a lie. Carrie was my EA, but recently, due to Coco’s unfounded jealousy, I made Carrie our change specialist and sent her to train on the West Coast.”

“Then she’s not your mistress?”

“Absolutely not.”

Madeline gripped his chin and turned his face to her. “I want the truth.” He would have lied to protect Carrie, but in this case he could tell the truth. “I swear on my mother’s grave I have never had sex with my employee.”

Close call, but since both he and Carrie want to take their relationship to the next level, how long can they keep the old viper from inserting her claws back into their life?

He really needs to escape society, but how is that even possible? It’s not like he can pick up and move his business. All his customers are in New York City.

Sweet Nothings–09/14/13

The Secret William Henry Fisk

The Secret
William Henry Fisk

“Let me whisper sweet nothings in your ear.”

Welcome back to Sweet Nothings, a little shadow of Sweet Saturday Samples, until that sweet treat starts back up.  Until that happens, I’m doing a little weekly blog where you can post a “sweet” excerpt  (PG 13 or milder) from one of your works.  Remember: please  hold the excerpt to 350 words or less. But if your cutting needs just a few more words, that’s okay too.  I won’t be counting. LOL

Today’s “Sweet Nothing” is an excerpt from my medieval historical novella, Betrothal, Book 1 of Time Enough to Love.  This snippet shows an early encounter between Sir Geoffrey Longford and Lady Alyse de Courcy.  They have been betrothed, never having met before the announcement of the betrothal.  Now Geoffrey is trying to learn a little bit about his betrothed.

“You have been at court but a short while, Lady Alyse? I did not meet you here last Christmas.” Not only a ploy to get her to talk, but to learn about her as well. If she would take the bait.

“No, sir. We did not meet.” She looked up at him and some of the fear retreated from her face. “I arrived at Windsor but two months ago. Before that, I was in the household of Lord Penburthy, in service to his wife, Lady Elizabeth. I have lived in the north these past ten years.”

He had not heard her speak so much at one time. Her low-pitched voice had a melodious quality—a pleasure to listen to. “Were you excited, then, to come to court?” Geoffrey experienced a giddy rush when he saw a tentative smile play about her lips.

“Aye, my lord, I came here eagerly. ’Tis very grand, especially after Merwyck Castle, near the Scottish border. A place beautiful, but wild. The castle did not have as many comforts as I find here.”

“What comforts?” He was fascinated by the way she blossomed before his eyes.

“Oh, warmth for one. Being so far north, the castle stayed cold always, even in summer. There were four other girls who served Lady Elizabeth, and we slept all in one room. Very noisy at night. To share with only one person here is like heaven.”

Geoffrey held his breath, for as soon as the words were out she colored prettily and darted a fearful glance at him. He had valiantly bitten back his amusement, yet still she noticed.

A delicate black eyebrow lifted. “You have a comment, my lord?”

Geoffrey laughed. As they arrived at the chapel, he took her hand, feeling that almost familiar rush of fire through his. “I would say, my lady, you are indeed perceptive. To share a room, or bed, with one other person can be like heaven.” He lifted her fingers to his lips, tingles firing off like sparks, and handed her into the chapel.

Okay, now it’s your turn to share a “Sweet Nothing.”

Her nipples stood erect, as if his mouth still teased them. Hard and swollen, they ached for his touch once more. Every inch of her body–skin, breasts, legs, and especially that hot place between her thighs–was on alert, eager and begging for his attention.

Spotlight on The Viscount’s Vow by Collette Cameron

TheViscountsVow3_850

Amidst murder and betrayal, destiny and hearts collide when scandal forces a viscount and a  gypsy noblewoman to marry in this Regency romance, sprinkled with suspense and humor.

Part Romani, part English noblewoman, Evangeline Caruthers is the last woman in England Ian Hamilton, the Viscount Warrick, could ever love—an immoral wanton responsible for his brother’s and father’s deaths. She thinks he’s a foul-tempered blackguard, who after setting out to cause her downfall, finds himself forced to marry her—snared in the trap of his own making.

When Vangie learns the marriage ceremony itself may have been a ruse, she flees to her gypsy relatives, declaring herself divorced from Ian under Romani law. He pursues her to the gypsy encampment, and when the handsome gypsy king offers to take Ian’s place in Vangie’s bed, jealousy stirs hot and dangerous.

At last, under a balmy starlit sky, Ian and Vangie breech the chasm separating them. Peril lurks though. Ian’s the last in his line, and his stepmother intends to dispose of the newlyweds so her daughter can inherit his estate. Only by trusting each other can they overcome scandal and murderous betrayal.

“A brilliant tale combining Regency romance with exotic Romani culture.”

The Viscount’s Vow is available at Amazon.

Excerpt for The Viscount’s Vow:

The Viscount’s Vow-Wedding Night Scene

Why had Vangie hit him so hard? A welt, red and raw like a fresh branding, was clearly visible on his angled face. Standing before him, the intense, provocative glimmer in his eye sent a fresh dash of color across her cheeks.

“Ian. . .”

No, she would not apologize. He deserved it, the brute. Faith, why is he grinning? Was her new husband dicked in the nob? She frowned at him, inching her way backward. Perhaps he’s mad. Mayhap it wasn’t bad temperament plaguing the man at all, but lunacy. She sent a sidelong glance to the open wardrobe.

Where was her blasted dagger?

Clasping her hands before her, she warily watched him. A muscle flexed in his jaw. She gasped when he stole closer, his gait purely predatory. She sucked in another wheezing lungful of air.

It was most difficult to breathe, or think, when one was being stalked.

Ian crept onward, step-by-step.

For every step he took forward, Vangie retreated until she was brought up short by the small bench she’d just vacated. She tried to skirt around it, not daring to take her eyes from him. Her hip grazed the dressing table, rattling the contents on top. Reaching beside her, her gaze fixated on him, she grasped wildly. Her hand closed on the handle of the silver hairbrush.

She sent it sailing at his head. He ducked, then laughed, a deep resounding echo in his chest. He was enjoying this, the cretin. She began tossing objects at him as fast as she could grab them.

Crystal perfume bottle. Engraved hand mirror. Jar of face cream. Jewel encrusted comb. Her wedding wreath. They all went careening past him.

He dodged each item, stealthy edging nearer. The floor was littered with broken glass, petals and leaves, globs of cream, and a puddle of perfume, which bathed the room with its citrusy scent.

In desperation, she tossed the last item, a filmy lace-edged handkerchief. A feral grin on his lips, he watched it flutter onto the rug, then raised mocking eyes to her.

The damned cur. He still laughed at her.

She frantically sought something else to throw at him. Ah, there it was. The jeweled dagger had been beneath the handkerchief the entire time. She snatched the blade, wielding it before her. He would gloat no more.

Ian’s gaze dipped to the knife. The lines of laughter on his face shifted into irritation. “Put down the blade.”

“No.”

“Vangie, give me the knife.”

She shook her head, daring to take a step forward, the blade tilted at a dangerous angle. The metal glinted in the candlelight. She knew how to use it. Puri Daj insisted upon it.

He retreated a cautious step, his dark gaze narrowed and trained on the knife.

“I won’t be called a lóoverni.”

Emboldened, she took another step his direction. No man, not even her husband, had the right to call her a whore.

His eyes slowly rose to meet hers, his expression unreadable. “Give it to me.”

His lips thinned, and he extended his hand, palm upward. “I won’t ask you again.”

A shaky laugh escaped her. “Not likely, my lord.” She angled the dagger in the direction of the adjoining door. “Now get out.”

“Though our fathers decreed we should marry, ’twas the insistence of the king that I go with you to Spain. Princess Joanna is loath to part with you.” He meant it as a compliment—that she was highly placed in the princess’s affections—but the dark, wide eyes in the pale, drawn face foretold some ill omen. He had to lean in to hear her low whisper.

“Then it is my fault you will be sent from your home.”

* * * *

Alyse stared at him, aghast at the disaster looming at the beginning of their marriage. How much would he resent her for wresting him from his home and country? Tears welled in her eyes. Had she not served the princess so well, perhaps she would not have been chosen to accompany her to Spain. A great honor, yes, but at what cost? And the fear of him she had begun to dismiss crept back. Would he punish her for his banishment?

The first tears brimmed over and trickled down her cheeks. Alyse raised aGeoffrey(1) hand to shield this weakness from him. Tried to turn away. But, before she could even shift in her seat, he clamped a big hand on her shoulder. She stiffened, resisted, though she might as well have tried to fight upstream against a torrent. Relentless, he drew her around the end of the table until she pressed against his hard chest and his free hand guided her head to rest against his shoulder.

“Shh. Do not cry, sweet. ’Tis not your fault. Our fathers betrothed us. Neither of us had a choice in the matter.” His gentle tone belied his previous gruffness.

Her heart calmed a trifle.

He turned her head and she looked into clear, kind eyes. “For my part, Alyse, if I must travel hence to Spain, I can think of none other I would have accompany me as my wife.” He brushed the tears away with his thumb.

His compassion stunned her, as sweet as it was unexpected. Was this the same great oaf as yesterday? She blinked back tears and struggled to sit up, but Geoffrey held her close with unyielding arms. Somehow, his nearness did not frighten her as much now.

Yes, I did run over this week. 🙂  I just couldn’t resist this scene.

Okay, now it’s your turn to share a “Sweet Nothing.”

Katarina and Duncan are exploring each other’s bodies for the first time.

Katarina continued across his hard abdomen, vaguely aware that his touch had stopped mirroring hers, and dared to stray lower still, past his hips to the apex of his thighs.

“I love you, Duncan,” she said, and wrapped her hand around her husband’s erection. Great heat and smooth hardness registered as she brushed two fingers the full length to the end, exploring the different shape and texture at the crown.

crwlogoFor those of you who don’t know, I’m a member of the Chesapeake Romance Writers, my local chapter of Romance Writers of America.  Last year we inaugurated an annual writing contest in memory of our long-time member Judi McCoy, author of fourteen romances and the very popular “Dogwalker” romantic mystery series.

Sweet Nothings

Whisperings of Love (or Sweet Nothings)

Whisperings of Love (or Sweet Nothings)

I was just getting ready to start back up with Sweet Saturday Samples, when I found that it’s been (hopefully) temporarily suspended while the coordinator takes a much needed hiatus.  I do hope Gunnar gets the break she needs and comes back full force in just a little while.

So, until that happens, I thought I’d do a little weekly post called Sweet Nothings.  I plan to post a PG 13 (or milder) excerpt from some of my works.  And I invite anyone else who would like to post similar excerpts on my blog to please do so.  If you can hold the excerpt to 300 words or less, that would be great. And if a few cuttings need just a few more words, that’s okay too.  I won’t be counting. LOL

My first “Sweet Nothing” is an excerpt from my Victorian historical romance, As Long As You’re Mine.  In this snippet, from the beginning of Chapter 1, Lady Samantha is plotting to thwart her father’s decree that she cannot marry the man she has chosen.

Berkshire, England

November 1892

This seduction might not be easy but by God, she would accomplish it tonight.

The clock chimed the half hour as Samantha Easterling stormed into her bedroom on the second floor of Monk’s Copse, the Armstrong’s country home. Lavishly decorated in pink, cream and maroon, and boasting a soft bed and warm fire, the room seemed much too cheerful for her current mood. She glared at the frilly decor then rang for the maid.

While she waited, she paced, fuming at the recollection of the recent interview with her father.

“You do not, and will not, have my permission to marry Raiford Tolbert. I will not have you wed to a milksop! And until you can present me with a suitor who has the backbone of a man, not a jellyfish, I will continue to withhold my approval for your marriage.”

Impossible man! One would think his disastrous marriage to her mother would have compelled him to allow her to choose her own path. But that, of course, was out of the question. He had to dictate everything about her life. Well, Father would be sorely disappointed tomorrow morning when she summarily took the decision about her bridegroom out of his hands.

A knock sounded at the door and Sara appeared, looking harried. The poor girl had been assigned as lady’s maid to all those house guests without their own servants, which included Samantha herself. A crucial part of her scheme involved leaving her Meg at home. She wanted no interference with her well-laid plans. A maid would certainly object to her mistress’s absence during the night.

Okay, now it’s your turn to share a “Sweet Nothing.”
