“Let me whisper sweet nothings in your ear.”

Welcome back to Sweet Nothings, a little shadow of Sweet Saturday Samples, until that sweet treat starts back up.  Until that happens, I’m doing a little weekly blog where you can post a “sweet” excerpt  (PG 13 or milder) from one of your works.  Remember: please  hold the excerpt to 350 words or less. But if your cutting needs just a few more words, that’s okay too.  I won’t be counting. LOL

rnc_bhmh9923a-300

Today’s “Sweet Nothing” is another excerpt from my (hopefully) soon-to-be released Victorian historical novel, As Long As You’re Mine.  We’re continuing with another snippet from under the tree.

“And I have not given you permission to use my first name.”

“Considering the nature of our introduction, I believe we can be on a first name basis without additional scandal raising its head.”

“Wretch!”

He laughed at her outrage. “Besides, in three weeks we will be married. If you think I’m going to call my wife by a title you are quite mistaken.”

A moment later, she emerged from around the tree, her face ashen. “Three weeks?” Her voice had a hushed, tentative quality.

“Your father named the day this morning before we parted. In the private chapel at his estate in Essex, I believe. I did not feel in a position to gainsay him, seeing that he himself witnessed part of our indiscretion. He sent to the estate immediately to have the first banns read tomorrow.” Rafe sighed. “It is not what either of us wants, Samantha, but it will be done. Your father insists on it and, reluctantly, so do I. And if you do not consent—”

“He will disinherit me. Oh, yes, Mr. Beauregard,” her voiced softened as her brows arched. “I have lived with that threat for quite a while. It is what drove me to Raiford’s bed and, ultimately, to you.” She eyed him, head to foot, her face impassive.

With a shake of her head she turned away to pace in front of the tree, anger in every step. She clenched and relaxed her hands as she moved but, at last, her frantic strides slowed until she halted before him. Head up, shoulders back, she stared straight into his eyes and said, “Yes, Mr. Beauregard, I will marry you.”

The filtered light glinting on the various shades of gold in her hair reminded him of a crown. She had acquiesced with the grace of a queen and his opinion of her raised a notch.

Okay, now it’s your turn to share a “Sweet Nothing.” 🙂

I’ve Got Tara Kingston on the Journal Today!

Today I have the wonderful honor of interviewing my friend and fellow historical author, Tara Kingston.

TaraKingston_SecretsSpiesAndSweetLittleLies_200

Please tell us a little about your story:

My upcoming release is a historical romance set during the Civil War, Secrets, Spies & Sweet Little Lies, the first book in my Secrets and Spies series. The story revolves around a Union spy who’s tasked with intercepting a senator’s daughter before she can rendezvous with the scoundrel she intends to marry. Here’s a little about Secrets, Spies & Sweet Little Lies:

Emma Davenport was a model senator’s daughter: prim, proper, but hell-bent on escaping the dreaded fate of spinsterhood that awaited her under wartime Washington’s all-too watchful eye. She was going to be a bride, and no one was going to stop her. Not even the daring renegade who steals her from a train transporting her to a forbidden marriage. Her heart tells her this mysterious captor is a dangerous man, but the undeniable attraction he wields is a more potent threat than any weapon.

Major Cole Travis is a highly trained secret agent, as skilled with deception as he is with a gun. Keeping a beautiful traitor from her rendezvous with a treacherous scoundrel shouldn’t be a challenge for the battle-seasoned spy—but he’s not the only one after his tempting prisoner. Emma Davenport must be kept out of enemy hands at all costs. Drawn to this woman whose innocent allure may be just another weapon in her arsenal, Cole risks his neck to shield her. Soon, however, protecting her from his own heart’s desire becomes another story entirely.

Tara, tell us about your future releases? What are you most excited about?

I have three releases coming in the next few months. First off, I’m very excited by the upcoming release of Secrets, Spies & Sweet Little Lies. I’m planning to launch the book on November 5, my birthday. There’s something a little exciting about having a book birthday on my actual birthday.

The second book in the Secrets and Spies series is Pistols, Parasols & Passionate Little Lies. In this book, spy Steve Dunham meets his match with alluring agent Amanda Emerson. I’m anticipating a late November release. Even though this story isn’t a “holiday” story, Christmas plays a special part in the budding romance of Steve and Amanda and I’m looking forward to an after-Thanksgiving launch.

So, who would you cast to play your hero and heroine in an adaptation of your story?

I think Jake Gyllenhaal would make an awesome Cole Travis, while Rachel McAdams would be awesome in the role of Emma Davenport.

If you could bring a fictional hero to life, which one would it be? Heathcliff? Mr. Darcy? Mr. Rochester? Tarzan? Captain Mal? One of your own heroes?

Captain Mal – I adore his rakish air, quick wit, and the fact he looks just like Nathan Fillion.

What’s your favorite guilty pleasure?

Watching goofy comedies with Jim Carrey, Steve Martin, Will Ferrell, and Adam Sandler.

What’s one thing about you that would surprise readers?

I am a huge fan of Mel Brooks and have seen Blazing Saddles and Young Frankenstein so many times, I can recite dialogue.

If you could bring a historical figure to life, who would it be?

Mary Todd Lincoln – I’d love to talk to her about her relationship with Lincoln and life through the First Lady’s eyes.

What’s your favorite quotation?

“Well-behaved woman seldom make history.” Lauren Ulrich.

You’ve landed in Oz…who would you rather meet: Dorothy, the Wicked Witch, or Oz?

The Wicked Witch…I can totally relate to the Wicked Witch’s quest for justice. After all, Dorothy dropped a house on her sister and absconded with shoes that had been in the family for ages. Wicked is in the eyes of the beholder.

CF Profile rose2Which would you rather possess: flying monkeys or Toto?

Flying monkeys…they’re very handy for running errands.

What’s your all-time favorite movie? Why?

The Wizard of Oz…you’re not surprised, are you?

Which fictional character do you most identify with? Why?

This isn’t going to sound very much like a romantic writer, but I’ve got to be honest: Lucy Van Pelt from Charlie Brown. My hubby and I are the answer to the question: What if Charlie Brown and Lucy got married?

Do you follow sports? Favorite teams?

I love football. I’m Steelers by marriage, Redskins by birth 🙂

I’m a die-hard Redskins fan via my dad. 🙂  When you’re not writing, where are you most likely to be found?

Outside – hiking, biking, or just hanging out.

If you could wake up stranded on a desert island with one celebrity hunk (actor, athlete, musician, etc.), who would it be? Why?

Russell Crowe…seriously, why wouldn’t I want to be on a desert island with Russell Crowe?

LOL!  Why indeed?  And now, how can readers reach you?

Stop by my website at http://www.tarakingston.com or email me at authortarakingston@gmail.com .

Thank you so much, Tara, for coming by today.  Looking forward to the release of Secrets, Spies, and Sweet Little Lies!

As Long As You’re Mine probably has the most love scenes of any historical I’ve written. Here’s another sexy snippet, this time with Samantha making all the moves.

She feathered another kiss over his lips, tugging briefly on the lower one before nibbling her way down to his dark, flat nipples. Light licks there elicited a quiet groan from Rafe and she hummed to herself as she continued down across his abdomen. She played her lips over his sleek muscles as the whim took her– the hint of salt on his skin adding to her excitement as she wiggled her tongue on its way toward its ultimate goal.

LOL!  Now it’s Rafe’s turn to be surprised!  Hope you enjoyed this little tease from As Long As You’re Mine. 🙂

Sunday Social: Halloween Costumes

As you may have gathered so far this month, I LOVE all things Halloween.  This is my favorite month, my favorite time of year.  And this week I’m talking about one of my favorite Halloween traditions:  costumes.

images (1)I’ve had favorite Halloween costumes since I was a little girl.  I remember a couple from before I went to school (yes, they had Halloween costumes when the dinosaurs were living. LOL).  One was a witch costume–I remember ‘ironing” the gold-colored crepe paper skirt for that costume.  And I was Tweety-Bird in a yellow costume and hard images (2)plastic mask the year I busted my head open.  (At six one does not understand one cannot stand on the back of a chair.  I do remember vividly, however, crying and asking if I was going to be okay to Trick or Treat.  Priorities, don’t you know!)

I was a bit older than this.

I was a bit older than this.

Possibly my best Halloween costume was a cat when I was in college.  I wore a black, long-sleeved leotard and tights with little black ballet slippers and black furry leg-warmers.  On my stomach I’d hand sewed a patch of white felt and wore white gloves.  My hair was braided in two braids then pinned into two knots of hair–like ears–on my head.

I painted on whiskers and pinned a long yarn tail in the back.  I still have a pic of it somewhere.  I think it was great!

My most bizarre Halloween costume I wore in grad school.  I went as a lamp.  Yes, a lamp.

I dressed in light beige pants and shirt, put a lampshade on my head (a big one!) and stuckP1040300 a light bulb in my mouth.  Unfortunately, it didn’t light up when you pulled my string. LOL  people looked at me strangely that night (it was a night for strange costumes–my roommate went as Indira Gandhi who had just been killed–down to the bullet hole in her forehead.).

I haven’t been to a costume party for Halloween in years, but each year I long for the days of costume parties.  Perhaps that’s why I love working in the theatre.  You have costume parties with every show. 🙂

The Painter's Honeymoon

The Painter’s Honeymoon

“Let me whisper sweet nothings in your ear.”

Welcome back to Sweet Nothings, a little shadow of Sweet Saturday Samples, until that sweet treat starts back up.  Until that happens, I’m doing a little weekly blog where you can post a “sweet” excerpt  (PG 13 or milder) from one of your works.  Remember: please  hold the excerpt to 350 words or less. But if your cutting needs just a few more words, that’s okay too.  I won’t be counting. LOL

rnc_iojx1047a-300

Today’s “Sweet Nothing” is another excerpt from my (hopefully) soon-to-be released Victorian historical novel, As Long As You’re Mine.  This excerpt is the spirited continuation of last week’s “nothing” beneath the copper beech.  Rafe retaliates!

A single huge stride put her within reach. She had time for a high-pitched squawk then he had his mouth on hers again, finding it still open from her cry. He took full advantage, delving into the warm, sweet depths, chasing her outraged tongue, stroking the roof of her mouth until she squealed, though probably not with delight. He released her abruptly, the suction of their lips making a rude smacking noise.

The_Autograph_Tree_(a_purple-leaved_beech)_in_the_walled_garden_at_Coole_Park,_Co._Galway._-_geograph.org.uk_-_65154She drew her arm back for another strike but he caught it nimbly in one hand. “Once was quite enough for that sort of mischief, my lady.”

“I could say the same thing about your kisses, Mr. Beauregard.” Samantha tried to twist her arm free, but he held it secure.

“If you really thought so you shouldn’t have encouraged me during the first one.” He grinned at her furrowed brow.

Her exasperated huff ruffled the hair on his forehead. “I did no such thing!”

“I regret to disagree, but you most certainly did. And there’s no reason we can’t indulge in a little dalliance with a clear conscience now. We blew the barn door off the hinges last night. That horse isn’t coming back.”

“I don’t intend to indulge in anything with you, Mr. Beauregard.” She pursed her lips. “Will you please let me go? You’re hurting my arm.”

Rafe doubted that, but he nodded and released her. She immediately darted around the side of the tree, though he could see her rubbing her wrist. He shook his head, weary of her didoes, and bent to pick up her gloves.

“You can come back, Samantha. I promise not to bite.”

“If you try to kiss me again, sir, I will be the one who bites,” she said from behind the tree.

Spotlight: Only Love Survives by Renee Charles

7847779

BLURB:

Amidst an epidemic ravaging the world, all Megan Fletcher’s hopes for the future lie in getting to Las Vegas where newscasts reported scientists were gathering to search for a cure for the modern plague. After rescuing her from a rooftop surrounded by Zombies, Sam Woods appoints himself her escort. While he knows she is determined to get to Vegas no matter the cost, he doesn’t know her secret. And with his hatred of all things Zombie, she doesn’t dare tell him the truth. The more he kisses her, the harder it is for Megan to hide her growing feelings…and the bite-shaped scar.

But Vegas is not the haven it was promised to be, and when Megan’s immunity to the disease is discovered, she realizes her future and her heart belong to Sam, if he will trust her. An idealistic school teacher and ex-corporate mogul manage to find love despite a looming worldwide catastrophe. Can their love survive while everything around them is dying? Will they learn that when facing the end of the world, Only Love Survives?

Available now!

EXCERPT:

A storm that spelled danger flashed across Sam’s face. He advanced on Megan so fast, she backed up against the side of the Suburban. Planting a hand firmly on each side of her, he pinned her with his arms as well as his gaze.

“What I want? Are you so hard-headed you can’t tell what I want?” He covered her mouth with his lips and crushed her clever comeback with an assault on her senses.

Megan pushed him, but he didn’t budge. Instead, he continued to kiss her until her heart raced and cheeks flushed with need. All resistance melted and she succumbed to the warmth of his embrace. Her arms wound around his neck of their own accord pulling him closer while her tongue sought his in a passionate dance, completely ignoring what her heart wanted.

When he finally broke away leaving Megan breathless and wanting so much more, Sam put his forehead to hers and watched her mouth like a drunk watches amber liquid poured into a glass. “You,” he rasped.

“I’ve wanted you since I found you hanging from that damn roof, and all our little encounter in the river did was add fuel to the fire.”

Bio:

Author, Renee Charles believes all love is legendary. Being the only female in a house full of giants (husband and two teenage boys) she tends to lean toward the strange and unusual, but inevitably the softer side shines through.

Whether life leads her to a snow-covered mountain top, sun dappled forest, or the bottom of a ravine (yes, ditches happen) she always has a pen and note pad ready so wherever the next adventure takes her, she can take notes.

Her own romance began in an insane asylum. Luckily, both she and her husband only worked there. But it makes sense her romance novels have strange beginnings that lead to passionate endings. Romance with a dark twist.

In the face of zombies, werewolves, and big foot she always seems to find a happily ever after to leave you with a sigh at the end.

Heart Over Horny: Guest Author C.D. Brennan

watershed

Watershed isn’t’ too much of a fanny tickler. And I mean fanny in the British sense of the word. Unlike most romance books out there, Watershed is a sweet romance. It seems once 50 Shades topped the charts, it’s all about sex these days. I’m not knockin’ it for sure. Sometimes I pace ahead in a romance just to get to the good sex scenes! And many of my colleagues write hot romance, and I enjoy them just as much. I read a huge range of romance from YA/NA to BDSM, so not even necessarily partial to sweet versus saucy.

So why did I choose to write a sweet romance during a tidal rush of steamy books to the market?

There are two reasons, really.

I have to be honest and say the first one is my mum. Seriously. Because it was my first book, I knew my entire family and friends all over the world would read it. I couldn’t hold my mum back from the bookstore and from telling every one of her friends and every customer that visited our family business. Don’t get me wrong, I’m not ashamed of romance – love is what makes the world go around – and I’m old enough to say the word sex in front of her now without cringing. But just barely. LOL. And your mum is – well, your mum.

The second and most important is that Watershed is the first book of the Love Where You Roam series. Stories about self-discovery and falling in love. A light-hearted read, Watershed revels in those “first days”. It’s about the butterflies, about the wonderment and confusion – it’s about looking forward to seeing that person, just seeing them, even if it is only for a few minutes. It’s about the sexual tension that builds so strongly between two people that it is almost painful. It’s that time of your life that rarely will be repeated (but can happen at any age!) – all the great emotion and buzz that resonate in your gut when you know something is building, something inescapable, something that will change your life.

I’m exploring this exact theme on my Sundae With Nuts blog where I host my fellow authors who answers sweet to steamy questions, but always questions about those “first days”. As my latest guest said: “It’s about having some fun and remembering your wild and crazy youth!”

So, even though Watershed won’t make you as horny as some other reads, I do hope it will leave you feeling happy, fulfilled, perhaps a soft sigh of awww may slip from your lips as you close the last page. Most of all, I do hope that it touches your heart.

Watershed is available at:  Amazon  Barnes and Noble  iTunes

And you can find CD Brennan here:  Website  Facebook  Goodreads  Twitter  Pinterest
