Definition House Kicks It Off with Dead New World

 Nancy

Holt’s only salvation is her…

“Sunlight filtered through the trees, brightening parts of the forest while leaving others in shadow. Birds chirped and chattered serenely. Everything seemed peaceful.

That’s what frightened me so much.” – Holt (hero from Dead New World)

Fresh out of boot camp, sixteen-year-old Holt is thrown into the deep end on a search and destroy mission. No walls to hide behind, no machine guns or bunkers for protection, just the boy next to him and his M-16. Without his best friend Ambrose to look up to, Holt wouldn’t stand a chance in hell. When his platoon is ambushed, his first mission ends in tragedy. Holt loses a leg and Ambrose, well…that’s better left unsaid.

Holt’s only salvation is Nancy, the nurse who helps him recover from his injuries. But when she’s abducted by the Reverend’s Horsemen, Holt will have to face his darkest fears to save her.

Dead New World by Ryan Hill

Blurb:

Zombies aren’t mindless anymore.

They follow orders. And if Holt and Ambrose want to kill some undead, they’ll do the same. But when a routine mission goes horribly wrong, the best friends’ lives are flayed to the bone.

Now there’s only one light in the darkness of Holt’s life, and when she’s taken, he’ll do anything to get her back. Even if that means defying orders and using his best friend as a weapon. Holt and Ambrose risk all to save her, but what they discover among the hordes threatens to remake humanity. Again.
In the end, will there be anything left to live for in this dead new world?

Sunday Social ~ O, Christmas Tree

It’s December first, which means Christmas is right around the corner.  So my Sunday Social posts this month will be holiday oriented (big surprise!).  And today I’m starting with a question about one of the biggest Christmas traditions–the Christmas Tree.

444px-Baum_mond_2007

Do you get a live tree or an artificial tree?

I have never had an artificial tree as my main Christmas tree.  I’ve had small desk-top artificial tree at work, but at home it’s always been a live tree.  Even a couple of years ago when we spent Christmas in Cape Cod, we took about an 8″ tall live tree that sat on a stool with the presents grouped around it. LOL

Nothing beats the smell of a live tree.

Going out in the cold to buy the tree is a great family tradition and we always get the same shape tree:  tall and full.  I always decorated my parent’s tree and our girls have decorated our tree (except for the lights) since they were about 4 and 5.

So how do you weigh in?  Artificial or real?  If you don’t put up a tree, which one do you think has more merit?  There are pros and cons to consider for both.

Thanks for stopping by!  I hope you have a wonderful holiday season!

Sweet Nothings–11/30/13 All Wrapped Up ~ The Present

800px-USMC-101211-M-0944A-005

“Let me whisper sweet nothings in your ear.”

Welcome back to Sweet Nothings!  It’s a little shadow of Sweet Saturday Samples, until that sweet treat starts back up.  Until that happens, here’s a little weekly blog where you can post a “sweet” excerpt  (PG 13 or milder) from one of your works.  Remember: please  hold the excerpt to 350 words or less. But if your cutting needs just a few more words, that’s okay too.  I won’t be counting. LOL

From now through Christmas I’ll be sharing excerpts from Christmas stories, although you are free to share any excerpt as long as it’s PG-13. 🙂

Today’s “Sweet Nothing” is from the beginning of my Christmas short story The Present, one of four short stories in my Christmas collection All Wrapped Up.

Christmas_wrap“I won’t do it, Janice.  You can do your own dirty work.”  Tessa Avery turned the vacuum cleaner back on and returned to cleaning the carpet in her sister’s living room.  She stared at the noisy thing as she pushed it back and forth so violently she almost took out a small end table.  Don’t look her in the eye.  It’s all over if you make eye contact.

Sudden silence descended as the vacuum stopped dead.  Tessa whirled around to find Janice holding the disconnected plug.  “You will do it or I won’t pay you for the month.”

It was a threat Tessa had to respect.  Unemployed for six months, she counted heavily on the money she got from cleaning her sister’s apartment.  But this was going too far.  “It’s not in the job description, Jan.”

“It is now.”

“Look, just call and tell him you don’t want to see him any more.”

“I can’t do that.  He’s flying back from California and won’t be in touch until after seven o’clock tonight.  At which time I will be dancing with that hunky Kevin at the office Christmas party.  I don’t plan to be home before one o’clock.”  Her eyes glittered like cold stars.  “If I’m really lucky, I won’t be home at all.  So when Hal shows up, you can just tell him I decided we weren’t right for each other.”

“This is low even for you, Jan.”

Her sister stared at her, beady-eyed, as she waggled the cord back and forth.  “Up to you, Tess.  Stay here, let Hal down for me, and there’ll be a nice bonus in your envelope.  Leave and….”  Janice’s smile could have wilted the poinsettias.  “Well, I can always find another cleaning lady.  It’s two days before Christmas.  If you want it to be a merry one, I suggest you stay.”

She bent and plugged the vacuum back in, so the sudden noise masked the “Bitch!” that slipped out of  Tessa’s mouth.  Janice headed to the bedroom, leaving Tess to contemplate the merits of sororicide and starvation.  At least they feed you in prison.

Okay, so now it’s your turn to share a “Sweet Nothing.” 🙂

Jenna’s 411 for November

I hope everyone had a Happy Thanksgiving and/or Hanukkah and are looking forward to more happy holidays in December.

I wanted to give you a little information about what’s going on with me and my writing because November was quite a month for change.  Back in October I had decided to go ahead and self-publish my Victorian romance As Long As You’re Mine.  I’d had several requests from agents and was just waiting for the final agent to contact me before going ahead with publication.

rnc_iojx1047a-300

When the rejection came in, it contained a lot of feedback, some of which I’d heard before, but some new criticisms as well.  There was a lot she like, but some major points that she believed made the book un-sellable.  After my knee-jerk reaction of “Well I’m going to publish it anyway,” died down, I realized that I’d heard this particular comment several times from those who had read the book:  the heroine is not likeable.  I’d heard that comment about 50% of the time, which means 50% of my audience wasn’t going to like the book.  And then what’s the point of publishing it?

So I’ve decided to shelve As Long As You’re Mine until the spring when I can give Lady Samantha Easterling a little attitude correction.  I’ve already figured out how to make her more likeable and sympathetic, I just need the time to do it.

The good news is, Betrayal, the second medieval novella in my serial novel Time Enough to Love, is scheduled for release in late December.  The cover reveal should happen in early December along with Chapter 1.  To whet the appetite of course.  And I’ll be promoting Betrayal during the month on features such as Horny Hump Day (oh, yes, there are some hot love scenes in this one as well), Sweet Nothings, and a couple of posts about medieval practices such as bedding the bride and bathing.  So look for Betrayal a lot during December.

Also in December I’ll be working on revising the final novella in Time Enough to Love, Book 3 Beleaguered, which brings the story of Alyse, Geoffrey, and Thomas to a close during the early days of the Black Plague in England and France.  I’m hoping this book will release in late February/early March.

I’ve also just completed a revision of Only Marriage Will Do, Book 2 in The House of Pleasure series, and sent it off to my editor at Lyrical Press.  I’ll let you know ASAP what the verdict is there.

So that’s my 411 for November.  December is going to be a busy month, and I’ll keep you posted what’s happening with me and my works.

Hope you have a great weekend in store!

Liza O’Connor Celebrates Thanksgiving in the UK

While Thanksgiving never occurred in Ghost Lover, here’s how I imagine it would have gone down, had they celebrated the holiday.

*****

Four people gather at one end of the excessively long dining table for Thanksgiving.

Head of house, master of the universe…well his universe, Garrison Durran, sits at the head of the table.

GAR

You don’t have to worry about Gar inviting additional his English friends to this strange meal.  Look at the background in his photo. It’s stuffed full of ghost. They are hard to count, but there’s about 90 ghosts after-living at the castle. Fortunately, most have stopped materializing since no one pays them any attention.

So how did they get into Gars photo?

Lassier painted them in.

Seated furthest away from Gar is his younger brother, Brendon

BRENDON

He’s spent the last few years in the United States, so he understands what Thanksgiving is truly about: Drinking beer, watching football and excessive eating.

Between them is the fabulous Senna Smith who has agreed to marry Brendon and live in an English Castle rather than become homeless in NYC. But only on the condition they will never, ever, have sex.

SENNA

The American sweetheart believes this day is about thanking God for his bountiful kindness, but ever since she was found guilty of attempted manslaughter, life has been less than bountiful so she has refrained from celebrating Thanksgiving.

This is the first year she feels grateful for her new wonderful life. Finally, she is happy. So when Cat, the talented artist that Gar brought home from the states, demands a proper Thanksgiving dinner, Senna agrees. Still, it would have been two vs. two had Brendon not also sided with the ladies.

Cat’s request for a traditional meal took everyone by surprise, since the girl is as non-traditional as one can get.

CAT

She’s normally a rebel.

When the cook brings out the giant turkey flown in from the states, all stare in wonder.

TURKEY

Here are their mental thoughts about the monstrosity:

Gar: What the bloody hell is that?

Brendon: Why didn’t the bar serve turkey wings? I wouldn’t have had to eat forty of them to fill up. One would have done.

Cat: Whoever painted the picture of the turducken should have their paints taken away. That’s a horrible painting.

Senna: Oh dear. The turkey probably cost a fortune to ship over from the states. What was Gar thinking?

And now, let’s join the conversation:

Gar: *looks at Senna* Do you like?

Senna: It’s the largest turkey I’ve ever seen.

Brendon: *poked at its hindquarters* It’s weird.

Cat:*laughs* It’s a Turducken. It’s got a chicken stuffed in a duck, stuffed in a turkey.

Gar, Senna and Brendon: *speak in unison* Why?

Cat:*shrugged* Because Thanksgivings are really stressful. So the food needs to be funny.

Senna:*grabbed Gar and Brendon’s hands and nodded for Cat to do the same* Thank you, God, for more food than we can ever eat, our strange main course, and Cat’s wonderful perspective on life.

*****

After eating more than they should, the ‘kids’ hurry upstairs to play (Don’t ask what they are playing, but it includes handcuffs and a whip.)

Senna and Gar retire to the library, where he read the Financial Times and Senna pets the ghost cat, Mr. Finch, while she ponders who created the first Turducken.

Gar: A penny for your thoughts.

Senna: Just because you can, doesn’t mean you should.

Gar: *laughs* If you are thinking of the monstrosity at the table. I couldn’t agree with you more.

*He reached over and snares her hand, squeezing it tight.*  But all the same, I am glad we celebrated Thanksgiving.

Senna: *nodded in agreement.* (Now if only Gar would give his permission for her and Brendon to marry, her life would be set. She loves Gar and never wants to leave the castle. For the first time in her life, she is happy. And yes, she regrets she cannot marry Gar, but Brendon asked first and she cannot go back on her word.)

GL_Lassier small

Lassier, the ghost lover, watches from the corner, shaking his head at the complete tangle the boys have made of things.

The job of preserving the family line never ends!

Ghost Lover

By Liza O’Connor

Contemporary Romance with a touch of paranormal

Blurb

Two sexy English brothers. One irresistible ghost. Who would you choose as your lover?

Completely broke and with a criminal record to boot, Senna Smith is one day from eviction from her apartment when Brendon, her promiscuous roommate from London, suggests she go to England, marry him, and manage his fortune. With few other options, she agrees to an open marriage. But she’ll never, ever, have sex with him, knowing if she falls in love with him, he’ll break her heart.

As trustee of Brendon’s family fortune, there is no way Brendon’s older brother, Garrison Durran, is going to let him marry a self-professed American gold-digger. As Senna tries to embrace castle life and English society for Brendon’s sake, Gar discovers Senna is the perfect woman for him–beautiful and intelligent, kind and caring. Now, if she wasn’t already engaged to his brother…

The ancestral ghost of Durran Castle has to intervene if the Durran brothers have any chance of an heir. He can’t leave them to fix matters on their own. They are useless buggers when it comes to love. As counselor to Gar, matchmaker for Brendon, and lover to Senna, a ghost’s work is never done.

Excerpt

“So my brother steals all your money and to compensate you, he suggests you come to England, marry him, and he’ll give you his trust fund.” Only his brother could contrive such an absurd plan.

“Yes.” By her brief answer, he gathered she thought it a perfectly reasonable solution.

His brother might be an idiot, but this gold digger would soon discover Gar a force to reckon with. “Did he steal a half million from your bank account?”

Brendon laughed. “Do you have any idea how long that would take? Cash machines only allow you two visits a day at two hundred dollars a pop.”

“How much did he take?” Gar restated his question.

“Four hundred,” Senna replied.

Gar stared up at the ceiling praying for patience, then glared at Ditz. “So why didn’t you pay her back the four hundred?”

Ditz stubbornly refused to answer, and instead glanced at the girl.

She sighed and faced Gar. “Precisely what I asked. He said he didn’t have the four hundred, but if I married him, he would come into a half million. Since the landlord planned to evict me, I really had no choice but to accept the offer.”

No Folly Here: Interview with Historical Romance Author Daisy Banks

AGentlemansFolly_600x800

I am so excited today to sit down with fellow Lyrical author, Daisy Banks, to talk about her latest Georgian historical romance, A Gentleman’s Folly, and her life as a writer.  You know I love the 18th century so I can’t wait to read this book!

Tell us a little bit about your new release.

I am part of the Lyrical Press group of authors who have contributed to the First Frost Anthology. This is a free read and is doing really well, understandably so, as there are some super authors involved. My little story Keep the Fire Burning is a fantasy romance.

My latest full-length release A Gentleman’s Folly published by Liquid Silver Books is a historical novel and I’d like to talk about that. The story is set in the mid 18th century, an era I adore. I love the robust way people lived then. This is pre-regency and a time when people experimented with all kinds of ideas. My heroine is certainly experimental in her lifestyle. I found her so interesting to work with.

What was your inspiration for this story?  I visited the West Wycombe Caves in Buckinghamshire and kind of got hooked. A folly on such a grand scale is impressive and the character of the man who indulged his friends by creating this folly enthralled me. The founder of the Knights of Saint Francis of Wycombe, a group who later became known as the Hell Fire Club, Sir Francis is a very entertaining character. Once I began the story and the research that went with it I was captured by the records of such an interesting man and the group he formed.

I am a fanatic about my character names. Are the character names special in any way? I chose them as fairly representative for their era. Katherine is known as Kitty in most of the story.

What was your process for writing this book?  Is this different or the same as other books you’ve written? I worked on this in sections, the initial idea came with a flash of images of the two of them in caves, at the church when they married, the boat on the lake, all of the images came fast. Writing them is another matter. I worked at the story, let people critique what I’d done, and became convinced the tale wasn’t right for what I wanted. So, unusually for me, I left the story for about two years. When I finally went back to it I’d learned more of the craft and re-evaluated the story so far and I decided to finish it.

Do you have plans for a sequel to this book?  No, not for this one.

Who is your favorite romance hero or heroine and why?  What qualities do they possess that make them memorable? I think the figure I enjoy most in all his manifestations is Merlin. I’ve yet to read a story with him in that I don’t like. I think it’s the magical link that fascinates me most. One of my favorite heroines is Ayla from the Earth’s Children series. I like her for her strength and her persistence, she is also very courageous and I find her bravery a very attractive quality. I think if I analyze what attracts me to any heroine it is courage.

Who was the first romance author and book you read? I think it may have been Anya Seaton’s Katherine. That book stands out in my mind. I think I was about 13 at the time of reading it. I still have a copy. I love the beginning, In the tender green time…  I’d read lots of stories before then some of which would fall into the category of romances but that story is special.

Who has been the greatest influence on your writing?  I would have to say my dear friend and mentor Mary, without her encouragement I wouldn’t be writing in the way I do.

If you could have one wish granted just for you (not world peace, LOL), what would you wish for? I would wish to have the health to allow me to continue writing. There are so many obstacles to prevent a person fulfilling their dreams but I think the most important one is health, if you don’t have that there is not a great deal you can do about it.

What is the most exciting/daredevil thing you’ve ever done? A long time ago I gave up my job, my home and my life as I knew it, got on a plane and travelled across the world to be with the person I loved.

Now, Lightning Round:

What is your favorite amusement park ride? The Swans at Alton Towers, very gentle and soothing as they float around the lake. I enjoy the log flume too.

Tea or coffee? Coffee. I do like espresso. I also like iced coffee. If I take tea it’s usually afternoon tea with lots of lovely cake.

French manicure or color (and if color, what color)? The colors I like are red, gold or pale pink. Those are my favorites. In the past I have also worn ice white and jet black too, sky blue while on holiday in a sunny climate and neon purple.

Beach or mountains? Both please, my ideal place would be on a wooded mountain slope with a nearby lake and a view down to the sea with a rocky beach that had a safe little sheltered cove for my boat.

Chocolate or vanilla? Rum and raisin.

Boxers, briefs or commando? Boxers.

Blond, brunette or redhead? (preferred men’s hair color) Dark Irish, straight or curls, dark Irish hair is beautiful. I also love copper tops as those with bright copper hair are called, one of the most fascinating men I have ever seen had hip length copper red hair that hung down his back like a silk curtain. Every time I saw him I’d imagine … Ah, best stop there.

Would you rather skydive or scuba dive? Scuba.

Would you rather vacation in Hawaii, Vegas or London? Hawaii. I love tropical warmth and the ocean so that would be an ideal destination for me. I’ve visited several places with active volcanoes and they are so exciting to be around, but not too close.

What’s the one thing you would never do? Drive without my seatbelt. I had a fairly bad road accident when I was younger and it’s made me very wary. Without the restraint of the belt, I think I would have gone through the windscreen of the car. The whole thing remains a kind of slow motion image in my head. I try not to think about it.

Blurb

Katherine Bescell, courtesan and member of a secret order, thinks the offer of a marriage in name only to Charles Leverret, heir to a large fortune, will solve all her woes.

Charles Leverret believes his hired wife will ensure his inheritance. He might even enjoy her company if she’ll let him anywhere near her. Charmed by his bride, Charles breaks their original bargain and falls in love. Betrayed by a trusted lawyer who withholds Katherine’s promised fee, Charles struggles against evil chance to persuade Katherine his love is real.

Lust and love, truth and trust, each makes demands on them both, but though Charles has captured her heart, Katherine can’t bring herself to admit they belong together.

Masked and robed in the rites in the West Wycombe Caves where only truth is told, Charles makes his stand to claim the woman he adores.

Excerpt

Their disastrous conversation hovered like a storm cloud as she hurried into the house, swept along the corridor, up the stairs, and into her room, where she tugged off her bonnet and splashed cool water onto her neck. Appalled at her reflection, she dabbed at her spoiled face with a cloth and then patted on a new layer of fine powder to cover the worst of the blotches.

Sadly, the water did nothing to still the heat in her blood, and fearful she’d harm the child if she continued in her bitter fury, she lay on the bed.

The heavy door thundered open. Charles, breathing swift, strode in. He shoved the door back, and it crashed, juddering in the frame.

She bolted up. “How dare you come in uninvited!”

He dragged her from the bed, hands heavy on her waist as he set her on her feet. “Try such a trick again, and I swear, with child or not, my wench, I’ll thrash you every day for a week.”

“Savage! Leave me be.”

“Be quiet. There is more at stake here than your curdled temper.”

She couldn’t avoid his face so close to hers and couldn’t pull back. “You’re a vile cur. Let me go.”

“For the sake of silence.” He caught the back of her head in his palm and brought her face much closer to his. Warm and smothering, his mouth covered hers, and all the time, her body sang in answer to his kiss.

A cascade of shivers shot through her, stalling her doubts. Desire flooded her blood at the first contact of his lips. An instant, heady, insistent craving for his most intimate touch blazed to heat her body. She opened her mouth to accept the seeking warmth of his tongue, and her knees softened like wax under a flame.

He gathered her closer, tightening his grasp, and hauled her tight against him. Their kiss deepened until each movement of his brought an echo of hers. A whimper of satisfaction stole from her as she twined her tongue around his. She sucked the warmth of him deeper into her mouth so his taste and hers swirled and mingled, and she closed her eyes.

Time ceased to be anything other than velvet, pulsing darkness as his mouth worked on hers. He demanded more and more of her, and never had she been so willing to give herself up. She pushed forward against him, curled her fingers through his hair at the base of his skull, and kissed him while trembles made her shiver in readiness for his hands to seek her skin. Joyful, she climbed the steps of desire, until he pulled away.

He held her at arm’s length. “Christ alive, woman,” he murmured and breathed fast. His eyes shone, an intensity of golden brown glowing in his gaze.

She gave a tiny nod of encouragement. Surely he’d want to bed her now. His desire, obvious from his deep breaths and the rigid swelling she’d felt pressed against her, had woven a lustful magic. The heightened state of her need might drive her to any passion he could wish to ask of her. Desire beyond any hope of salvation ruled. But he made no movement to hold, touch, or kiss her again.

Shame boiled in her breast at the understanding he didn’t want her. She could hardly demean herself further.

“Now, have you regained your senses and will you listen? We may not be what they think us in this house, but though savage you believe me to be, I’d not see your mangled corpse twined in the traces. You will never take off so again. Say it.”

Staring at the shimmer of his reflection in the polished brass coal scuttle, she nodded.

“Say it.”

“I’ll not behave foolishly again.” Why could he not be gone? A lump of sheer frustration had lodged in her throat. She was well used to driving such a small gig and pony. What the hell did he care? The one thing she wanted from him he’d not give.

A small gasp broke from her as he caught her around the waist. Thank the gods. He’d changed his mind.

He laid her back on the bed. “Move over. I’ll have to stay for an hour at the least. The household will expect no less.”

“What?”

“By my faith, woman, don’t you think they’d expect us to kiss and make up after such a tempest? Half the servants saw you risk you neck to drive here alone from the lake, more saw you storm upstairs I’ve no doubt, and the rest will have heard, been listening spellbound to your yells. What are they to think now? We’re supposed to be happily wed. They’ll like as not put your tantrum down to your condition. So they’ll expect me to be a good husband and do the same and gentle you with some well-tempered wooing.” He sat on the bed and took off a boot.

Shivers still danced on her skin from his kiss, and the ache in her loins remained a powerful throb of need. Was there anything she could offer him to complete her, to give her the fulfillment her body demanded? Humiliation spilled through her like a chill wave. Her means to change his mind were nothing. He’d never make their marriage a reality. But she so longed for the man. Was that the worst of it? Each moment with him her body flamed. No other man affected her so nor, unless her memories were faulty, had any man ever. If she were alone, she might well have wailed like a babe in her frustration. As it was, she clung on to a shred of pride. She would not weep for the lack of his loving.

Full of despair at the wretched prospect, she lay back and rolled over onto her side to leave the widest gap between them she could. An hour of him beside her, without even so much as the touch of his hand, would be interminable. She closed her eyes and swallowed down the desire for his flesh. His other boot fell to the floor with a thud.

He lay back, and she shuffled farther away, so close to the edge of the bed that, if she breathed too deep, she might tumble from its height to the floor. She’d made such a fool of herself at the lake, damn near demanding his body. She’d let herself be beguiled by his good looks, by the most simple of attentions given for the pretense they shared. She’d behaved like an untried girl, nearly falling over herself in her desire for him. “Never again,” she whispered into the late afternoon light.

“Let’s hope not.”

His words raised a new flash of wretchedness. She’d not be wanted by any man in her present state, let alone by a scoundrel such as this heir to a fortune. “You could at least be silent,” she snapped.

The lovers she’d taken in devotion to Venus had never made her feel degraded. But now, as the sunlight slid down the wall and her body still thrummed like a harp string from his kiss, she knew herself humbled by her own flesh. She’d become a woman of less sober character than the most lascivious tuppenny whore.

Sunday Social ~ Thanksgiving Traditions

Hello, everyone!  I’m sorry I haven’t been very social for the past few weeks.  My day job’s been very demanding recently and I’ve had to choose between work, sleep, writing and social media.  Unfortunately, social media and sleep have gotten the short end of the stick.  But things have eased up a bit this weekend, so I wanted to be social again, especially with Thanksgiving so near.

Thanksgiving has always been a day of traditions in my family.  When I was little it was the one holiday my father didn’t have to work (he worked shift work and always traded to work Christmas so he could get paid double time).  So Thanksgiving was the one day in the year my parents and I could be together all day, and especially to sit down and eat together.  Therefore, a lot of traditions grew up around this day.

I’d get up to watch the Thanksgiving Day parades while my mother finished getting the dinner ready.  We always ate at the stroke of noon, so her morning was very busy.  The800px-Macys-parade-1979 menu remained the same throughout my childhood, another tradition.  My father had a garden during the summer, so Thanksgiving was a time when all that bounty showed up on the table:  fresh butterbeans, snaps (green beans), squash, potatoes for the potato salad, sweet potatoes, and collards.  There was also deviled eggs, cornbread dressing, cranberry sauce, hot brown ‘n’ serve rolls, pumpkin pie, and the turkey of course.  Quite a feast for just three people! (We ate leftovers for days!)

The dinner table was always set with one particular linen tablecloth and cloth napkins, dishes and glasses only used at that one meal, and particular silverware only used on this day.  I can see that table in my mind’s eye and it always makes me feel like I am home.

I must say an additional word about two dishes:  the cornbread dressing and the collards.  The dressing, or stuffing, was my father’s mother’s recipe and was a two day affair.  You had to cook the cornbread with onions and celery the day before, then use that as the basis for the cakes you made on Thanksgiving day.  Yes, the dressing was made into little cakes using the cornbread mixture, Peppridge Farm stuffing mix and water from the turkey plus spices and baked.  I can taste the sage right now.

The other dish that says Thanksgiving like nothing else to me is collards.  My father made the best collards that anyone has tasted.  He grew them in his garden and froze them, so we had them year round.  He cooked them originally in a steel pressure cooker that no one was allowed to touch but him.  They were seasoned with smoked hog jowls and came out so tender they would melt in your mouth.  Eventually, the pressure cooker became so old the gaskets for it were no longer available and he adapted the recipe to the crock pot, cooking the collards on low for 24 hours.  Still tender and mouth-watering.  It’s the one dish of his I learned to make and now at family gatherings (like this Thanksgiving) I am looked to to carry on the tradition of my father’s collards.  It is a task I take with great seriousness and look to with great anticipation (and appetite!).

I hope everyone has a wonderful Thanksgiving, filled with friends and family, and traditions of your own.  Please share a Thanksgiving tradition if you like.  I always wonder what other folks do on this day devoted to family.

Sweet Nothings–11/23/13 Only Marriage Will Do

Ferdinand_Leeke_Auf_der_Parkbank

“Let me whisper sweet nothings in your ear.”

Welcome back to Sweet Nothings!  It’s a little shadow of Sweet Saturday Samples, until that sweet treat starts back up.  Until that happens, here’s a little weekly blog where you can post a “sweet” excerpt  (PG 13 or milder) from one of your works.  Remember: please  hold the excerpt to 350 words or less. But if your cutting needs just a few more words, that’s okay too.  I won’t be counting. LOL

Today’s “Sweet Nothing” is from the beginning of the second book of the House of Pleasure series, Only Marriage Will Do. I’m finishing up my revision to this work this weekend.

“Whatever is the matter, my dear?” Hell if he knew. But five years as a captain with the 44th Regiment of Foot would stand him in good stead, no matter what might be required of him. He could play his part, even with little information. Let the lady lead and he’d follow as well as he could.

By the way she darted glances at the man, something about him terrified her or perhaps some threat he carried. Already spoiling for a fight, he’d gladly make short work of the fop either way.

The woman’s lips jerked into a smile, then she took a deep breath. “My dear,” she nodded toward the other man, “may I present Viscount St. Cyr?  Philippe, this is my husband, the Earl of Manning.”

What the hell was this all about?  Was this woman actually married to Jack Fitzwilliam? Steady. Don’t tip your hand. Bowing to the man he said simply, “My lord.” His “wife’s” smile still appeared somewhat strained.

“Philippe and I were betrothed for a short time last year, my dear. Before the scandal.” Her eyes blazed at St. Cyr, who had the grace to look discomfited.

“That was none of my doing, Juliet. My father broke the betrothal, not I.”

“But you did not fight for me, Philippe. Not a single protest. The servants who returned told me so. Did you think they did not know?” Juliet’s eyes narrowed, light sarcasm filled her voice.  “And when our marriage no longer pleased your father, I no longer existed for you.”

“Juliet!  That is not true.” St. Cyr’s hand drifted out, as though he would take hers. “I thought of nothing but you, cherie, the whole long year we have been apart.”

Amiable pulled her toward him and glared at the shorter man. He deepened his frown to a glower. “That is hardly your concern now, my lord. The lady is my wife and however much you may regret losing her, I must ask you to refrain from such statements of affection lest it become a matter of honor.”

By God, if he had to face this popinjay in a duel he would do it. It mattered little he did not know the lady. Any man who tried to force himself on a woman was nothing more than a hell-hound of the first order. The man’s frivolous dress and arrogant attitude—anathema to his own personal sensibilities—seemed more than ample reason to meet the man.

A superior sneer raised the Frenchman’s upper lip. “Oh, but it is my concern, my lord. I have the prior claim to dear Juliet. In fact, I must insist you remove your hands from my wife immediately!”

Please forgive me for being a bit over the limit today.  I really wanted to get to that stopping point! LOL  Okay, so now it’s your turn to share a “Sweet Nothing.” 🙂
