Spotlight on Author Carrie-Anne Brownian

I’m so pleased to introduce you to a friend and fellow author, Carrie-Anne Brownian.  You may know Carrie-Anne from her presence on Weekend Writing Warriors and earlier on Six Sentence Sunday.  Carrie-Anne has shared many snippet from her many historical novels, all set in the early to mid twentieth century.  Carrie-Anne has just published one of her books (under the pen name Ursula Hartlein) and another is set to release later in June.

Jakob Cover

I do a lot of drafting, editing, and revising in my head.  I’ve had quite a few books and storylines memorized backwards and forwards in my head before I finally wrote them down.  Inevitably, many things change while they’re in the mental queue.  And as I’m writing a first draft, many times even planned storylines, characters, and plot developments change from what I had long envisioned, as more of the story takes shape.

One of those moments came when I was creating my World War II Bildungsroman And Jakob Flew the Fiend Away from a long short story/piece of back story about a longtime secondary character.  The story had always been that he met his future wife Rachel on a brief relief assignment at Westerbork near the end of the war.  However, as I was expanding Jakob’s story into a full-length novel (which turned out to need two volumes for all the material!), I began thinking of how much more interesting it would be if he and Rachel had actually met earlier, and he’d become obsessed with her.  It would be destiny that they ended up meeting again so much time later.

With this important change, there’s a lot more meat to their love story.  While a lot of people who barely knew one another paired off at lightning speed after the liberation, they’re compelled by more than just feeling lonely and wanting to start a new family after being left alone in the world.  It also gave Jakob more inner turmoil, since he’s put up an iron wall around his heart and is denying to his friends his obvious feelings for this girl he met by chance and couldn’t stop thinking about.  Later on, he stumbles upon her former hiding place and finds some of her belongings, which only creates an even stronger connection to her.

A number of other important plot shifts happened while writing my contemporary historical Bildungsroman Little Ragdoll, which was inspired by the story behind The Four Seasons’ famous song “Rag Doll.” I got the idea for this story back in May 1993, at age thirteen, after I first heard the story behind the song.  I just had to give that unknown young girl a happy ending with a rich boy who loves her just the way she is, though there are a lot of dark twists and turns on the way to happy ever after.  The discontinued original first draft of 1993-94 was even darker, like a Grimms’ fairytale on acid!

My favorite subplot was the love story between Allen and Lenore.  My original plan was for Allen and Lenore to get together a lot sooner, but to my adult writer self, it made more sense to wait awhile.  Lenore is only fifteen to Allen’s eighteen, and isn’t comfortable with letting any man touch her after what she’s survived.  Forcing them to wait created great dramatic tension, particularly after they each lead the other to believe they’re in unrequited love with someone else.  Lenore runs away in the middle of the night in a snowstorm because she’s so heartbroken, and Allen goes to find her, slowly nurses her back to health, and finally tells her how he feels on her eighteenth birthday.  I was looking forward to writing the chapter about their romance with such anticipation, and felt so satisfied and excited when it finally arrived.

One of the numerous other changes was the  age of my protagonist Adicia’s eventual husband Ricky.  I’d always planned them as the same age, but that couldn’t work with the big plot twist in Part IV, when Ricky is drafted.  During my research, I discovered 1972 draftees were born in 1952.  He had to be two years older than Adicia.  And since I wanted to make him a Cancer like Adicia, I got the unexpected, added bonus of the lottery number 88, one of the last numbers to be called during the last active year of the draft.

Jakob CoverAnd Jakob Flew the Fiend Away (written as Ursula Hartlein):

Jakob DeJonghe can think of nothing but revenge when the Nazis coerce his father into suicide and his little sister mysteriously disappears the day before Yom Kippur 1940. As conditions in Amsterdam worsen, Jakob is determined to fight back and be the master of his own destiny, just as his heroes the Maccabees did in ancient times.

In November 1942, he feels his chance has finally come. Knowing it’s now or never, Jakob seizes an opportunity to jump from a death train, severely breaking his foot as he lands. As he limps for his life towards a forest, he’s found by four young resistance fighters and taken to a safe house. Even though Jakob has been left with a permanent limp, he’s still determined to defend his country and track down the men who killed his father.

His dream comes true when he joins his new friends’ resistance group after his seventeenth birthday, but after a chance meeting with a spirited young woman on one of his missions, he’s jolted by emotions he thought he’d buried. As much as he tries to deny it, he can’t stop thinking about her, even during the dark days of the brutal Hongerwinter. After he’s recruited into the Princess Irene Brigade and made a real soldier, Jakob realizes his battle is only half-won. If he ever wants to survive a world that will never be ordinary again, love and not hate will have to carry him through. And if he finds his dream girl again, this painful readjustment just might be easier.

And Jakob Flew the Fiend Away is available now on Amazon.

Little Ragdoll: A Bildungsroman (written as Carrie-Anne Brownian):

In the world Adicia Éloïse Troy is from, life is more like a Grimms’ fairytale than a Disney fairytale.  But sometimes even the darkest, most twisted fairytale has a happy ending, even for a poor girl from the Lower East Side.
Adicia’s oldest sister Gemma becomes a sacrificial lamb when their parents derail her plans to go to college and force her to marry an awful much-older man, but Gemma gets the last laugh, and shows her sisters it’s possible to break the cycle of generational poverty.  Gemma’s escape is only one of many dramatic developments which unfold over that year.  These trials and tribulations reach their height when Adicia’s mother is arrested for embezzlement, but it seems like hard times are over forever when her one decent brother makes good and moves his sisters into his new apartment.  However, this paradise only lasts five and a half months, and Adicia and her sisters are forced to move to Hell’s Kitchen on Christmas Eve.

During all the highs and lows of her youth, Adicia’s one constant is the loving bond she shares with her sisters, brother, and friends.   Unlike her older sisters, however, Adicia cannot bring herself to leave home underage.  She feels she has to passively stay to protect her baby sister Justine, particularly after she becomes the oldest sister left at home.  Their fortune starts to change when they’re befriended by their new neighbor Ricky Carson, a wealthy young man who falls in love with Adicia.  By this point, Adicia’s parents are desperate to salvage their family’s reputation, and plot to marry Adicia to a man forty years her senior.

With the noose tightening, Adicia has little choice left, and finally acts instead of being acted upon.  Her plans to run away don’t go exactly as planned, though, and it seems as though she’s thrust back into a passive role when Ricky rescues her with a marriage proposal.  However, this seeming rags to riches happy ending has an unexpected, nightmarish twist.  Will Adicia find the strength to survive this final ordeal and leave her role as a little ragdoll behind forever?

Little Ragdoll will be released later this June.

Weekend Writing Warriors ~ 6/08/14 7 Days of Seduction ~ In the Shower

weekend_writing_warriors_header3

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors!

For the Sundays in June for WWW, I’ve decided to share snippets from each of my back listed books. This week is 7 Days of Seduction, an erotic contemporary.

7-days

Ashley Thompson had a wild time at her party last Friday night. Maybe too wild. She wakes to find a video of her in the middle of a ménage a trois with her ex-boyfriend and a gorgeous stranger. Unable to remember anything about the night, other than the hot sex she sees on the computer screen, Ashley begins a search for Mr. Hunk. She has no luck until he unexpectedly shows up–in her shower.

Hunter Hopewell intends to introduce Ash to a variety of sexual experiences he finds fun and exciting. He proposes a week-long series of “colorful” encounters designed to seduce Ashley out of her kink comfort zone.

As their week of escalating pleasure intensifies, Ashley must choose to let go of her inhibitions or risk losing the best damn lover she’s ever had.

My 8 from 7 Days of Seduction: (punctuation has been creatively re-arranged to adhere to the 8 sentence format)

The bathroom door opened and closed.

“Damn it, Sam, why is it every time I take a shower you have to pee? Couldn’t you just hold it for once, or pee in a cup, for God’s sake?”

“I’m not Sam, and I don’t have to pee.”

Ashley’s eyes popped open and the bottle of body wash hit the tub with a loud thunk. The husky voice she’d heard on yesterday’s video and in this morning’s dream was richer in person. Sexier. Her heart took off like a deer after a shotgun blast.

Hope you enjoyed this little taste of 7 Days of Seduction.  If you want to read more, it’s  available on Amazon right now for only .99!.

In the mean time, check out the rest of the Warriors here.  There’s some fantastic snippets to be read.

Alphabet Post: K is for Knight

420px-Accolade_by_Edmund_Blair_Leighton

Knight seems to be a no brainer for the letter “K” given my medieval series and the emphasis romance has on knights. Indeed, the knight arose during the medieval period, around 1000 CE as part of the medieval social order when there emerged three classes of people: those who worked, those who prayed, and those who fought.

After the fall of the Roman Empire, Europe was “dominated by an aristocracy descended from a mixture of old Roman families and Romanized Germanic tribes.” These men became rulers of their own land holds, usually a castle and a certain amount of land. These lords depended on the strength of their retainers, arms-bearing men who swore fealty them and lived within their households. This is the beginning of the knightly social class who became defined as warriors on horseback.

In return for their service, the lord would usually give the knight a small parcel of land or fief, with authority over the peasants who worked the land. This authority led to the knight’s elevation into the ranks of the nobility.

Knights as the warrior class adopted a set of idealized behaviors known as chivalry to be followed both on and off the battlefield. These behaviors included being a ferocious fighter, a devout Christian concerned with the well-being of the weak and helpless, a charmer who loved to dance and flirt with ladies, and a man who would allow no stain on his honor.

Although there was no standard of chivalry to which the knight was held, there did arise,800px-Jousting_at_Hever_Castle,_Kent_(5)_-_geograph_org_uk_-_1453366 in literature, a standard of sorts where the treatment of noble women were concerned. A knight was expected to honor and serve his lady, whoever he might choose her to be. She could be the lady of the castle where he received his training or a lady who he esteemed from afar but never met or a lady he was destined to marry. Whatever their relationship, the knight was bound to do whatever the lady bid him do. Many stories of King Arthur and the Round Table, especially those with Lancelot as the central figure, illustrate this idea of devotion to the lady although often the lady is portrayed as mocking or disdainful.

Scene-from-A-Knights-Tale-001One of my favorite movies dealing with knights is A Knight’s Tale. Even though it is filled with anachronisms, the jousting and fighting sequences are very well done as well as its portrayal of courtly love between Will and Jocelyn. (Just disregard the music, the dancing, and the Audrey Hepburn-esque heroine’s clothing. LOL) It is also very fitting and funny that Will chooses to call himself Ulrich von Liechtenstein, a famous real-life knight-poet who lived in the 13th century (about 150 years before the time the movie is set). If you haven’t seen it, you really should. It’s a great knight’s entertainment. 🙂

Do you have a particular favorite movie or romance novel that deals with knights?

If you’re interested in medieval romance with knights, check out my medieval serial novel, Time Enough To Love. Book 1, Betrothal and Book 2, Betrayal are available at Amazon.

The Romance Review’s Sizzling Summer Reads Party

ssr2014I’m participating in The Romance Review’s Sizzling Summer Reads Party during the whole month of June!

There are over 250 authors participating and there are giveaways from each author PLUS a Grand Prize of a $100.00 Gift Card!  To participate you need to click HERE and register, then answer the questions and win prizes!  There are different questions each day of the month, so there are prizes from June 1 until June 30. (My question is on June 23.) How cool is that!

My Summer Sizzling Reads are my Medieval series:  Betrothal, Betrayal, and Beleaguered. They are the three novellas that make up the novel Time Enough to Love.  My giveaway is copies of both my currently published medieval novellas Betrothal and Betrayal.

Betrothal tells the story of Lady Alyse de Courcy, betrothed to a stranger, Sir Geoffrey Longford even though she loves Thomas, Lord Braeton.

They are betrothed by law but can he make it an affair of the heart?

In Betrayal, a  horrible betrayal forces Alyse to marry the best friend of the man she loves.

The worst betrayals come from within.

Blurb for Beleaguered:

Beleaguered3

When death holds sway in the world, can even the greatest love survive?

Finally in France, Alyse and Thomas return to their roles as courtiers to Princess Joanna. Their passion for one another continues to smolder hot and deep—until one fateful encounter changes everything.

During a formal banquet, Alyse must share an intimate dance with Geoffrey, her first love. His searing touch proves Alyse’s love and desire for him is as strong as when they first met. Tormented by this revelation, Alyse is bitterly torn between the love of her life and her love for her husband.

Into this agonizing situation, the disaster of the Black Death rears its head, decimating the princess’s retinue and threatening all their lives. Alyse, Thomas and Geoffrey must try to save the princess from the ravening disease but at a dire cost to themselves. With her world plunged into chaos, Alyse struggles with her feelings for both of the men she loves. But which love will survive?

Excerpt from Beleaguered:

Mirth and Gladness Lead a Dance from Roman of the Rose

Mirth and Gladness
Lead a Dance from Roman of the Rose

Geoffrey hurried on with a suggestion. “’Twould be the work of a few moments for me to teach you the dance, my lady.”

It would have to serve. She shot a look over her shoulder at her husband, who nodded and laughed with the princess though his eyes were trained on her. Best get on with it then. The sooner ’twas done, the better.

“Your skill at dancing is such that you would certainly learn the steps with but slight instruction from me.” Geoffrey leaned so close his voice, against her ear made her jump and recall herself. She stepped back and looked at him.

His practiced courtier’s smile flickered at her, and she caught something deeper shining in his eyes that she fought not to see. Her heart stuttered a beat. Her body flushed with the anticipation of dancing with him again even as misgivings swirled in her mind. No good would come of this dance, but Thomas watched closely to see that she acted cordially to Geoffrey. Would that it was an act.

With a sense of heavy foreboding, she extended her hand to him. “Very well, Sir Geoffrey. What must I do first?”

He placed her hand atop his arm and led her to their place in the circle of dancers then grasped her hand to pull her around to face him.

The moment his hand touched her skin, a streak of fire shot through her. Her mouth went dry, and her gaze flew to his face. Surely he felt that as well?

He stared back, his eyes mirroring all too clearly the blaze that coursed up her arm.

Damn Geoffrey Longford.

In a daze, she looked around at the other dancers, expecting them to stare accusingly at her. As if they could see this sinful feeling that tore at her soul. At a loss for how to act, she raised her gaze to beseech Geoffrey. “What do we do now?”

’Twas an apt question for, God forgive her, at the touch of Geoffrey’s hand, all thought of her husband had fled. She was back on the deck of the Phillipa, facing him once more. Loving him once more.

Geoffrey cleared his throat, his face flushed, and said simply, “Follow me.”

Then they were twirling around the circle, hands clasped, arms touching intimately. He

seemed to brand her wherever he touched. The figure reversed, and her other side was scorched as if a red-hot blade seared her. Her gaze locked onto Geoffrey’s, and the music, the dancers, the Great Hall and all its inhabitants melted away until all that was left was the whisper of his breath in her ear and the heat of his body pressed close against her.

He leaned in closer to whisper, “I must lift you now.”

Before she could grasp that staggering news, his arm went around her waist and he lifted her, twirling them around full circle. She panted, blood pounding in her temples, roaring in her ears.

They continued to dance, but she moved as though she were a doll made of rags, her legs barely able to stand. Her world narrowed to the single source of light and life that was the man who held her in his arms again. The man whose love she could no longer deny. Despite the agony of the betrayal, in the core of her being she knew neither the vows she had spoken to Thomas nor the passion they had enjoyed in his bed would ever match the intensity of love and belonging she shared with Geoffrey. As soon compare a candle’s flame to the sun.

My giveaway is a copy of both my medieval novellas Betrothal and Betrayal to the winner.

Thanks so much for participating in The Romance Reviews Sizzling Summer Reads Party!

In Memoriam: Susan Koenig, Author

Author

It is with profound sadness that I write this post as a memorial for my dear friend and fellow author, Susan Koenig.  I received a post from Sue’s blog on Saturday night, written by her husband, stating that Sue had passed away unexpectedly on Friday, May 30.

I was shocked and stunned because I had just exchanged emails with Sue the day before, setting up a promo for her newest book, The Bench, an anthology of her “shorts,” poetry and short fiction.  With her husband’s generous permission, I’m instead dedicating this post to Sue and her writing.  She will be greatly missed.

I met Sue several years ago while I was participating in the Six Sentence Sunday blog hop. We would visit each other’s blogs and I became quite enamored with her WIP called The Devil’s Mistress.  It was about a soul collector named Gideon, who worked for the Devil (Mr. D) and who had a human mistress he had fallen in love with.  I loved the character of Gideon and was very excited when Sue used him in her short story, Nineteen Hundred, about Gideon’s encounter with a woman on the eve of the 20th century.

nineteem hundredjoSue and I talked on the phone several times–for several hours at a time–as she worked on Nineteen Hundred and I’m so happy I could be of help to her with its publication.  It is a sweet historical paranormal that is still available at Amazon.  You can read my full review of it there, as well as other fans’ reviews.

She had planned and was working on a sequel–actually she called Nineteen Hundred the prequel–called The Soul-Collector’s Second Chance, which featured Gideon in the current day along with his new love interest and a set of friends also in the soul-collecting business.

In addition to the short story, Sue just recently published an anthology of “shorts,” her poetry and short fiction she had written called The Bench.  I have not had the pleasure of reading this work yet, although it’s now at the top of my TBR list.  It is only available in paperback (Sue loved paperbacks and did not read e-books), but is also available at Amazon.  Below is the promo spotlight for The Bench I had planned for today.

thebenchFC

Using a unique style of storytelling that sets the tone for the book, the first entry tells a bench’s 60 year history in six stanzas of 100 words each.

For the imaginative reader who loves words and appreciates variety, The Bench includes something for everyone whether you’re seeking the powerfully evocative, the unabashedly strange or simply wish to be entertained.

Take a break on a bench, a bus, or anyplace. Relax. Ignite your senses.

You never know whom you’ll meet.

A man might enthrall you with his life story or a thoroughly modern vampire might regale you with his stand up comedy routine.

Cast your eyes to the garden and explore the magical colours of love between a flower and a butterfly.

Better yet, tune into the person standing just outside your peripheral vision reciting poetry and concentrate, you may hear the lingering strands of the last dance, or a symphony in words.

Original, concisely woven storytelling, that at the end allows your mind to conjure up its own images, interpretations and conclusions.

The collection contains ten colour photographs by the author.

An Excerpt/Sample from The Bench:

The Flower and the Butterfly: A Love Story

The purple aster plump with nectar bends in the wind throwing off her sweet smell while petals float in the breeze.

A butterfly, in hues of gold and vermillion, sniffs the air finding an aroma in the west.

He follows the scent, hovers, flaps wings over the aster, questioning.

Aster churns out her sugar.

Soundless, the petals caress the butterfly who snuggles into the nest of ambrosia and falls into the flower rubbing his head against the petal pillows.

The bloom envelopes the insect, and purple tinges his gold while spots of yellow merge into the aster’s purple.

They laugh.

The Bench is available at Amazon.com, Amazon.uk, and Create Space.

Bio:

Susan Koenig started writing fiction when she retired from a boring government job in 2009.

She is an occasional poet and has been featured in a local online literary magazine. Sue is a regular contributor to a monthly Haiku site as well as a consistent participant on a writing challenge which weekly tests her creativity.

In 2012 Sue published a short story, Nineteen Hundred, the prequel to her current novel in progress, The Soul Collector’s Second Chance.

Since the “novel” is struggling to be born, Sue, a very short woman, decided to publish her “shorts”. It was a logical choice.

Sue’s home is Southwestern Ontario, Canada, where, when not writing, she and her camera take junkets to explore new ideas for incorporation into her writing.

Sue also was a faithful writer for Blogophilia, writing short fiction to prompts and winning points for incorporating certain words or phrases into the story.  She also wrote for The SpeakEasy, and it was her latest for this challenge that got me back in touch with Sue after a long absence from commenting.  The post is called “Teeth,” and if you like what she called “a typical zombie romance” then you should check it out on her blog, sassyspeaks .  That was one of the wonderful things about Sue–she wrote on such a wide variety of topics you never knew what she was going to come up with next. But whatever it was, it was wonderful.

I have only touched on a few of her pieces–there are many more that I keep thinking about that sadly will remain works in progress.  She had a wonderful gift for characterization that I appreciated early on in Six Sentence Sunday. In one WIP, I think it was The Misfits or The Outcasts,  5 high school friends come together. The plot flipped back and forth between the present and their high school days and how they had bonded and how their lives were different yet the same but they still had each other.  The characters in this tugged at my heartstrings every time she posted from it.  They came vividly alive in just six sentences; a testament to Sue’s skill as a writer.

As when any writer dies, we are saddened that they will no longer delight us with future works, although we cherish the ones they leave behind for us.  I feel this keenly with Sue because there were so many of her stories, of her characters, that will never get to share their stories.  I am reminded of the memorial poster, “Speechless,” that circulated when famed character voice artist Mel Blanc died.  I see all of Sue’s WIP characters in this position but instead of an empty mic, there should be an empty seat in front of a computer. We are all the poorer for her passing.

images9PEELWSM

Rest in Peace and God Bless, Susan Koenig.  You will be sorely missed.

Weekend Writing Warriors ~ 6/01/14 Almost Perfect ~ The Perfect Moment

weekend_writing_warriors_header3

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors!

For the Sundays in June for WWW, I’ve decided to share snippets from each of my books, beginning with Almost Perfect, my 1Night Stand novella.

ALMOST PERFECT2

Pamela Kimball’s birthday present, a 1Night Stand adventure, promises jump-start her life, put a new man in her bed, and help her forget her past.  Unfortunately, movie-buff Pam’s Pirates of the Caribbean fantasy takes an alarming wrong turn when she’s abandoned on a not quite deserted island—with ex-husband Roger Ware.

Forced by hunger to accept Roger’s offer of dinner,  Pam realizes the geek she married has transformed into one of the most charming, sexiest men she’s ever met. His newfound confidence—and hot body—re-kindles old fires.  A simple kiss leads Roger to challenges her to discover how much his lovemaking skills have improved, leaving Pam torn between self-preservation and burning desire.

With time running out before they’re rescued, Pam must decide if her heart can survive the consequences of becoming Roger’s “almost” perfect 1Night Stand.

My 8 from Almost Perfect:

20140313_074842Standing as good as naked on the deserted beach, Pam smiled as the warm breeze caressed her bare body. The sense of being slightly naughty added to her delight in the sensual feel of the warm air as it dried her breasts. Her nipples peaked as the wind cooled them. She walked down to the water’s edge, toes in the water, the salty tang in the air adding to the perfect moment.

“If you’re skinny dipping, you forgot to remove one very important piece of clothing.”

Pam whirled around. Roger stood on the beach behind her, a green bottle of Perrier in one hand. His eyes played up and down her naked torso and his salacious grin widened. “Mind if I join you?”

Hope you enjoyed this little taste of Almost Perfect.  If you want to read more, it’s  available on AmazonB&N, and All Romance E-Books.

In the mean time, check out the rest of the Warriors here.  There’s some fantastic snippets to be read.

J is for Jesses

Yes, at long last, I’ve resurrected the Alphabet Posts!  I really hated not writing these posts, but it was either write blog posts or books and I opted for books.  Now, however, I have more time and I want to start back where I left off.  My last Alphabet Post was “I” for Island, when I was in St. Thomas.  So my next letter is “J.”

Jesses are a piece of equipment used in falconry, a big pastime during the Middle Ages.  It’s also still practiced today.

619px-Falconry_transmitterA jess is a thin piece of leather that tethers a hawk or falcon in falconry.  The device is slipped around what would be the bird’s ankle and tightened.  The purpose is to keep the bird from straying or hunting what it shouldn’t.

They also allow the falconer to train the bird while perched on his/her glove.800px-Parabuteo_unicinctus_-falconry_show-8a

One use of jesses that I remember vividly is in the movie Ladyhawke, at the end when Isabeau gives her jesses back to the Bishop because the curse has been broken and she is no longer bound to be a hawk.

pdvd448vv4

That is one of my favorite romantic movies, and even better, it’s set in the Middle Ages!

Thanks so much for coming by to visit the letter “J” this week.  Hope you’ll return for “K” next week!

Almost Paradise: Writer’s Retreat

It’s that time of year again.  School has ended.  Memorial Day has come and gone.  Summer looms like a large, azure-blue empty sky just waiting to be filled with hours upon hours of uninterrupted writing.

And the first milepost is Chesapeake Romance Writers’ annual Writer’s Retreat.

chanco

I leave tomorrow just after lunch.  I get to take the Jamestown Ferry across the James River and drive through lush countryside down to the retreat, Chanco on the James. Once Watson-Lodg-266there, I won’t leave until they throw me out at 2pm on Sunday.  Four days of uninterrupted (more or less) writing.

Meals included and dinner served by a gourmet chef.  JoeMack

For a writer who has to battle job, kids, cats, dogs, and a husband who crave time with me, this place and these four days are paradise.

chanco13

This will be my 4th retreat and I’ve always gotten a ton of work done.  Last year I finished four chapters of my Regency romance To Woo A Wicked Widow.  This year my goal is to finish my edits for Only Marriage Will Do.  I know my editor will be pleased with this goal.

chanco9The truly amazing thing about this retreat is how much work we all get done.  Despite the fact that we love to talk, 90% of the time we sit, silent, and type.  The proof is in the page count:  last year 15 of us wrote 999 pages.

We take breaks and go to the kitchen for a snack and some conversation.  Or we pass around dictionaries and thesauruses.  And once a day we have a workshop, led by one of our members, which you can attend or not as you choose. I think I’ve attended one in four years.

I go to write.

So tonight I’m scheduling my posts for the rest of the week.  I do check my email and blog, but only once or twice a day.  If you come by, think of me, writing away on my brand new computer–bought just for this retreat–piling up those page counts.  I’ll let you know next week how I did.

And now let Summer begin!

Participating authors in Horny Hump Day post three sentences from their published works or WIP, hot like a firecracker! LOL

Welcome back to Horny Hump Day!

This week, to celebrate my cover reveal for Beleaguered, I’m showing off another snippet from the final book of Time Enough to Love, which is now scheduled to release July 11! WooHoo!  Here’s my gorgeous cover, courtesy of Danielle Fine.

In this  scene, just after the last one I posted, Thomas is retaliating against Alyse’s teasing. Hope you enjoy! (They sure seemed to!)

A broad smile curled her lips until he grabbed her and she squealed in surprise. In a second, she lay on her back, with just enough time to sense him over her before he entered her fully. The swift stroke wrested a gasp of pleasure from her lips as the hard, hot member sank deep.

Thomas and Alyse’s story, Betrayal, is available from Amazon and Smashwords.

Please continue to the Horny Hump Day blog site for additional sites on the hop and go check out the other hot authors.

Thanks so much for visiting the Journal once more for Horny Hump Day!
