New Release! Lord of Sherwood: the Guardians of Sherwood Trilogy Book Three is now available from Amazon, The Wild Rose Press and all the usual outlets worldwide!

Curlew Champion, master archer, has always known his destiny.  With his cousin, Heron Scarlet, he will become a guardian of Sherwood Forest and further his people’s fight against Norman Tyranny.  But the third member of the triad is still to be revealed, the woman who will complete the magical circle and, perhaps, answer the longing in Curlew’s heart.

Anwyn Montfort has fled disgrace in Shrewsbury and come to Nottingham at her father’s bidding.  He wishes her to make a good marriage and settle down.  But the wildness that possesses her refuses to quiet.  She knows she’s been searching for something all her life, but not until she glimpses Curlew does her spirit begin to hope it has found its home.

Only the magic of Sherwood can bring them together, and only their union can complete the spell woven so long ago …

Excerpt:

Aye, Curlew thought ruefully, she could not be ruined more completely than at his hands last night. And if he sent her home with his child in her belly, what then? He realized, with a shock, he did not even know her given name.

A bit brusquely he said, “Gather up your clothing, lass. Cover yourself. You must go home.”

“Nay.”

“Do not be daft. Of course you must. Your father will be beside himself.”

“You promised.”

“Eh?”

Stubborn light flashed in her eyes. “You gave a vow last night that you would never send me away from you.”

Had he? Dismay crashed down upon Curlew like a hurled stone. But he had thought she was the Lady, asking from him a vow of devotion. He did not know he spoke words to a mortal woman.

He got to his feet, heedless of his nakedness, and began collecting her shed garments and thrusting them at her. “To be sure, you will go home.”

“Nottingham is not my home.” She tipped back her head to look at him. “I belong nowhere, except maybe here with you.”

Curlew shook his head violently. He turned from her and took up his own clothing, pulled his sark over his head even as she watched, donned his leather tunic, then slid into his leather leggings.

“Master Curlew?”

He turned back to her swiftly. She sat with her chemise clutched to those tantalizing breasts, her eyes wide with inquiry.

“Listen to me, Mistress Montfort. You are not for me, nor I for you.”

“But last night—”

“Despite last night.” In spite of the wonder and magic of it, the undeniable sense of rightness. “For I have a destiny before me, one I cannot escape, and would not if I could. I regret, but you have chosen the wrong man.”

She got to her feet, her clothing still caught against her. The autumn sun, filtering through the leaves, warmed her hair to amber-gold. “I do not believe that.”

“You must. Now dress yourself. I will see you safe to the edge of the forest.”

She did not move. Like a goddess she stood and looked at him with defiance.

Curlew felt an unexpected twinge of sympathy for Montfort. Who could fail to love this lass, or be driven beyond endurance by her? “Please,” he said.

The corners of her mouth twitched. “I regret, my lord, I would do most anything to please you. Anything but that.”

Excerpt:

As he took the shortcut through the forest, heading for home, a shadow flitted through the trees and appeared at his side. He was so shocked by her sudden appearance that he dropped the sack of flour.

‘Marcie, what are you doing here?’ he demanded as he tried to get his heartbeat under control again. ‘You shouldn’t be out here alone.’

‘You were with her again, weren’t you?’ Her delicately beautiful face was twisted in fury, honey-brown eyes flashing fire at him.

‘What? Who? What are you talking about? Don’t come up on me like that. I might have hurt you.’

‘That widow. The one the boys all talk about. I heard them. They think I don’t understand, but I do. You go to her house and do things to her!’ Her accusations stung and he felt guilt morph instantly into fury.

‘Mind your own business. It’s nothing to do with you!’ He slung the flour-sack onto his back again and stomped off down the narrow trail.

‘Don’t you talk to me like that, Asterion! You’re my slave and I have the right to know what you’re doing with your time. You aren’t free to go where you like, see who you like!’ she snarled at him.

He stopped and looked down at her in shock. In the last year he’d grown taller by almost a head than she was. Now, the year’s difference in their age seemed insignificant. In fact, after spending time with the widow, he felt much older and more worldly-wise than she was. Marcie was still a child, even though her sixteen-year-old body said otherwise. This little display of temper only went to prove it.

‘Oh sorry, mistress, I forgot my place for a moment. Of course you have the right to know that I’ve been sharing the widow’s bed. Do you want the details? How I make her scream and pant? How she sucked my cock until I came in her mouth?’ He knew he was stepping over the line, but so had she.

Their relative stations in life had always been ignored by mutual, unspoken agreement. They’d always been equals. But now, by throwing his servitude in his face, she’d crossed the line. She’d showed him how she really saw him. How beneath her he really was.

Marcie’s mouth dropped open and he was immediately aware of the seductive draw of it. Those red lips were so full and sweet, covering perfect white teeth that looked just like rows of pearls. By brushing back a stray tendril of glossy brown hair, she drew his eye to the seductive softness of it, made him itch to bury his fingers in its lengths.

But honey-brown eyes that were usually filled with warmth when they gazed at him were now wide with astonishment and pain. And he suddenly realised what he’d done.

In that moment, he wanted to call back the words and go back in time to do this all again.

‘She sucked what?’ she gasped, her cheeks flaming red.

‘Nothing. Forget it. I shouldn’t have said anything. You just made me mad. Let’s get home. Daedalus will be wondering what happened to you.’

‘He’s gone to the coast to check on our cargo. Pater went with him,’ she said absently, clearly not focused on the information she was imparting.

‘Then it’s me who has to get back. I’ll be in trouble if I’m much later.’

‘You wouldn’t be, if you hadn’t gone to her. How could you? How…How could you?’ Her eyes filled with tears and his heart felt sick in his chest. In that moment, he wanted to cut off his cock for making him cause her this pain.

‘Marcie, don’t. You don’t understand. I’m a man now. I…I have needs I can’t control. The widow helps me. Haven’t you noticed the difference in me the last few months?’ He was almost pleading with her for forgiveness. And that was stupid. What had he done wrong except take an hour a week for himself? He deserved that, didn’t he?

‘Yes, I’ve noticed. You look so smug and cocky, swaggering around the place. The boys say you’ve got too big for your own sandals now. They say that the widow has played with more than your prick. She’s played with your head. Made you think you’re better than them.’
‘I am better than them. And it didn’t take the widow to make me know it. What do you want from me Marcie? Tell me – ’

She launched herself at him so fast that he again dropped the sack of flour. Her tightly closed lips butted against his in a fiercely innocent kiss. It smashed her teeth into his, cutting his lip, and it felt nothing like the soft, seductive caresses the widow gave him.

But it was like putting a naked flame to tinder. Like a lightning strike to a tree. The very fact that her lips were sealed to his blew every thought from his head and brought his cock to instant, painful attention. Blood pounded in his ears, his legs grew weak. Air evaporated from his lungs.

Fighting for control, he pushed her away. ‘What are you doing? Stop!’

‘You don’t have to go to her. If kissing is what you want, I can give you that. You don’t have to go to her!’

‘Yes I do!’

‘Why? Aren’t I good enough for you?’

He grabbed her by the shoulders and shook her in fury. His head felt ready to explode.

‘I need more than kisses! Don’t you get it? We aren’t children anymore. And I need more than friendship and kisses. And you can’t give me what I need. You’re the little mistress and I’m the slave. They’d cut off my balls if I so much as looked at you the wrong way!’

Her eyes filled with tears again and she sobbed so hard it felt like her searing pain came from his own chest. Looking at her hurt too much, so he dragged her into his arms and pressed her to his aching heart.

Medieval Mondays

This week I’m starting a new type of promotion with my fellow authors who write medieval romance called Medieval Mondays.  Each Monday (with a couple of exceptions) I will spotlight an author and their medieval works and my medieval works will be spotlighted on their blog.  Sounds like a really nifty way to get the word out about my medieval romances. 🙂

Today I’m spotlighting my own medieval works, the Time Enough to Love serial novel.  This novel was released in e-book format as three novellas over the course of the last year. It is now available as one print  volume as well.

They are betrothed by law but can he make it an affair of the heart?

betrothal-with-logo1Lady Alyse de Courcy has fallen in love with Lord Braeton, a nobleman in King Edward III’s court and a man to whom she has barely spoken. Fate, however, has decreed her betrothal to his best friend, Sir Geoffrey Longford—a handsome and imposing knight, yet hardly the man she wants to wed.

When Sir Geoffrey is bound in betrothal by his father, he could not have expected the beautiful stranger to win his heart the moment they meet. Nevertheless, the fascinating Lady Alyse has done exactly that, and his feelings for her only grow as he learns more of her gentle yet spirited nature. But Alyse’s infatuation with his friend casts doubt on whether she can ever return his regard and their wedding day is fast approaching…

Will he have time enough to win her love?

Available in e-book at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, ARe, and Smashwords.

The worst betrayals come from within.

After a night of passion with her betrothed, Sir Geoffrey Longford, Lady Alyse de Courcy isBetrayal_logo eagerly looking forward to her wedding. But when Geoffrey is forced to marry another, a heartbroken and possibly pregnant Alyse finds herself in her own private hell. She must either gamble with her reputation or marry someone she does not love.

A reputed connoisseur of women, Thomas, Lord Braeton, has dallied with many ladies of King Edward’s court, although he has favored none. However, as Geoffrey’s best friend, Thomas has sworn to serve and protect Alyse, an oath now sorely tested when he agrees to marry her—in name only—to guard her reputation. Yet, as they grow closer, and Thomas discovers Alyse’s sweet but spirited nature, he comes to desire a marriage in truth. Can he overcome her memory of Geoffrey or is Thomas doomed to burn with passion for a woman he can never possess?

Available in e-book at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, ARe, and Smashwords.

Beleaguered3When death holds sway in the world, can even the greatest love survive?

Finally in France, Alyse and Thomas return to their roles as courtiers to Princess Joanna. Their passion for one another continues to smolder hot and deep—until one fateful encounter changes everything.

During a formal banquet, Alyse must share an intimate dance with Geoffrey, her first love. His searing touch proves Alyse’s love and desire for him is as strong as when they first met. Tormented by this revelation, Alyse is bitterly torn between the love of her life and her love for her husband.

Into this agonizing situation, the disaster of the Black Death rears its head, decimating the princess’s retinue and threatening all their lives. Alyse, Thomas and Geoffrey must try to save the princess from the ravening disease but at a dire cost to themselves. With her world plunged into chaos, Alyse struggles with her feelings for both of the men she loves. But which love will survive?

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors!

I’m taking you back to a previous work, Only Scandal Will Do.  Lady Katarina Fitzwilliam has been kidnapped and auctioned off as an evening’s entertainment to a masked man in The House of Pleasure, a notorious brothel in Georgian London.  She’s trying to get her bearings and figure out a plan of escape.

masked manThe door opened as Kat skidded to a halt in front of a tall, cloaked and masked form. She lifted her chin and forced her eyes to meet his.

“Who are you, sir?”

“Your master, slave.”

Harsh words cloaked in a voice of deep velvet. A shiver of dread raced down Katarina’s body, as much from the words as from his tone. She gathered her courage and replied, “I am nobody’s slave. There has been a dreadful mistake.”

If you’re interested in finding out if Katarina persuades him or not, Only Scandal Will Do is available on Amazon for just $1.99.

In the mean time, check out the rest of the Warriors here.  There’s some fantastic snippets to be read.

Alphabet Post: Q is for Quizzing Glass

I know this should have gone up yesterday, but going back to work this week has thrown everything off!  Anyway, here’s a fascinating fashion accessory of the 18th and 19th centuries.

329px-Quizzingglass

The quizzing glass, also familiarly called a “quizzer,” was a fashion accessory used by both men and women for about  a hundred years, from Georgian period thru the mid-nineteenth century, although portraits depict similar devices being worn as far back as the 16th century.

The quizzing glass was a single lens, used to magnify objects and improve the person’s vision, as eyeglasses were unpopular at the time.  In addition to helping with vision, peering at someone or something through the quizzing glass was dubbed “quizzing,” defined by the  Royal Dictionary Cyclopedia of Universal Reference by Thomas Wright, 1865 as  ‘the act of mocking by a narrow examination through a quizzing-glass or by pretended seriousness of discourse.’

Note the quizzing glass around the young lady's neck.

Note the quizzing glass around the young lady’s neck.

Quizzers were worn around the neck on either a chain or a ribbon for ease of use. They were worn not only by those who needed vision adjustment, but by all fashionable ladies and gentlemen who wanted to look “smart.”  They remained a necessity for women until the 1830s when the double-lens lorgnette became more popular.  Men continued to wear the quizzing glass until the early 20th century.

If you’re interested in the lovely fashion accessory, both Historical Hussies and Candice Hern have excellent articles and pictures of the quizzer.

TIME ENOUGH TO LOVE EXCERPT:

“Lady Alyse de Courcy!” King Edward called out again, bringing Alyse’s head up like a startled deer. “Present yourself before the court.”

Alyse shot off her seat. Oh, Lord! She had kept King Edward waiting.

“I beg pardon, sire.” She hurried from behind the table, too aware of all the eyes now on her. As she moved to stand before the king, the low drone of many voices rose around the room.

“Impudent girl.”

“I’d not want to be in her place.”

“Do you think the king will…”

Each snatch of conversation made her heart beat faster.

What will he do to me?

Her normal embarrassment at being the center of attention tripled at the thought of this blatant lapse of protocol. She stopped several feet from the dais and the room hushed as though everyone held their breath.

“What do you require of me, Majesty?” Her mouth so dry she could taste sand, Alyse fought to speak in a normal tone. With a sigh of relief, she dropped into a deep curtsy, hiding her face in the folds of her skirt. If only she could remain bowed thus before His Majesty for the remainder of the evening.

King Edward laughed. “Obedience, Lady Alyse, as I require of all my subjects. As your father requires of his daughter.”

Her heart thumped wildly in her breast. That could mean but one thing.

“Rise, my lady.”

She did so on unsteady feet. “I am ready, as always, Your Majesty, to obey my father as I would you.”

Holy Mary, let it be Lord Braeton.

King Edward lifted an eyebrow toward Alyse. “A very pretty answer, my lady. And are you ready to accept your father’s decree for your betrothal? His messenger has today reached me with the contract, as I am to stand in his stead in this matter.”

Alyse took a deep breath and hoped her voice did not tremble. “Yea, Majesty, I will obey my father.”

King Edward nodded and leaned over to whisper something to Queen Phillipa, who sat beside him, heavy with their twelfth child.

Mere seconds before she learned her fate. She could scarce affect an indifferent pose before the court when inside every inch of her quivered with anticipation of the name. His name, pray God, on the king’s lips.

Thomas.

In her mind, she heard the word.

The king straightened, glanced at her then at the man by her side.

“What say you then, Sir Geoffrey? Does the lady not speak fair? I vow she will make you a proper wife and a dutiful one as well.”

Alyse turned, until that moment unaware that Geoffrey Longford stood beside her. Chills coursed down her body as the king’s words echoed in her mind. The sensation of falling backward assailed her, as though she rushed away from the tall man at her side even as his figure loomed larger and larger in her sight.

Not Lord Braeton.

Her numbed brain repeated the phrase, trying to comprehend that instead he would be her husband. Geoffrey Longford.

God have mercy on me, for by the look of him, this man will not.

Cover Reveal: Time Enough to Love

Today I’m revealing the cover for my medieval novel, Time Enough to Love!  Isn’t it gorgeous?

Pageflex Persona [document: PRS0000040_00024]

This book has actually been 5 1/2 years in the making.  I started writing it in January 2009 and finished July 28, 2009.  It was a huge book–almost 600 pages–full of all the errors a first time author makes.

So I put it a way and learned to write better.

But the story was so compelling, the characters so dear to me, that I wanted to find a way to share them with my readers.  I came up with the idea of the serial novel, so I published it as three novellas, Betrothal, Betrayal, and Beleaguered, starting last year. But by the time they were all out, I wanted the whole story under one cover.

So my editor, the fabulous Danielle Fine, and I put the parts together with this brand new gorgeous cover in a print edition.  Which means if you want one big volume to read, or you want a signed copy, that option is now available to you. 🙂

Time Enough to Love will release on September 15, 2015, but it is available for pre-order through Amazon right now! (I can’t believe the technologically challenged me made that happen!)  Just click here to pre-order your copy.  It will, of course, also still be available as three e-books: Betrothal, Betrayal, and Beleaguered.

I’m also on a blog tour for the book next week, and you’ll have opportunities to win copies of the print book then as well.  In fact, if you leave me a comment today saying you want a print copy of the book, you’ll be entered to win one in celebration of the reveal.  🙂

Thanks so much for joining me in my celebration of the completion of my very first novel.  I hope you enjoy it in whichever format you choose.

hhd 2014 2 (1)

Participating authors in Horny Hump Day post three sentences from their published works or WIP, hot like a firecracker! LOL

I’m back for the final Horny Hump Day.

The ladies who participate in HHD each week have come to the sad conclusion that it is indeed time to move past our mid-week hop.  We will miss bringing you a hot blast each Wednesday, but don’t be a stranger to our blogs.  We still have some hot excerpts to share.

I’ve tried to come up with the ultimate scorcher to go out on.  See if this lights it up for you. 🙂  And just to make this post a little extra special, I’m unofficially revealing the front cover of the print version of Time Enough to Love (which you will know as Betrothal, Betrayal, and Beleaguered). The official cover reveal is tomorrow.  But you saw it here today first.

TETL frontHe bent her knees and pushed her legs wide, revealing the hidden beauty of her.

The sight swelled his cock, urged him to drive it home. Not yet–not without another taste–so he pressed his tongue against her opening, stroking up and down until she cried out, “Geoffrey. Ah…ahhh.”

A sweeter sound he could not ask for, though it made his need grow greater. He moved higher, to the nub that would bring her to pleasure, and swirled his tongue around it.

And yes, I’m bad for using more than the allotted three sentences, but it’s the last day, so what the heck? 🙂  Hope you enjoyed this snippet of Time Enough to Love.  The print version releases on September 15.  But please come by for the official cover reveal tomorrow!

So that’s all for Horny Hump Day.  Hope you had as much of a blast as I have!

Please continue to the Horny Hump Day blog site for additional sites on the hop and go check out the other hot authors one last time.

Thanks so much for visiting the Journal for  Horny Hump Day!
