Medieval Monday ~ Beleaguered: A Sweet Treat

Medieval Monday is back, with a new twist. This time around we post excerpts that fulfill a different requirement each week. This  week we must post a scene with food. So my excerpt will be a little risqué one from Beleaguered, Book 3 of my medieval series Time Enough to Love.

beleaguered3EXCERPT:

She stared first at her bedaubed body then at him. “What is that?”

“Honey, my sweet.”

She tilted her head. “The honeyed pears from our feast?”

“The same.” He grinned, watching her closely. Would this suit her playful sense or no?

Dropping her head back on the pillow, she giggled, a delicious sound in his ears. “I suppose now I cannot even take my rest lest I awake to find a…a…pudding on my stomach.”

He chuckled. “You are much tastier than a pudding, love.”

She squealed as he dipped his head to lap at the other breast.

He licked the golden swirls he had dribbled over her as she slept, savoring the sweetness of both honey and delicate flesh.

“That tickles, Geoffrey.” She laughed and wiggled. “I will still be a sticky mess no matter how well you work there.”

“Then I must be more diligent, sweetheart.” He applied his tongue vigorously to the honey.

“I say if one be a mess then ’twere best both were.” She stared at him, a new hunger in her eyes.

Visions arose of her tongue licking honey from his chest, his stomach, his… His cock leaped, insistent once more.

Oh, let it be done.

He grabbed Alyse by the arms and rolled them until he lay flat on the bed with her overtop of him.

“All right, madam.” He ran his finger down her breast, gathering some of the honey that still clung there then caught it with his tongue. “’Tis your turn.” He gestured to the opened jar of pears and stretched his arms wide. “I promise you, revenge will be sweet.”

She slipped her hand into the pot and grabbed one of the slices, dripping with the sticky honey.

What would be her first point of attack? He held his breath, quivering.

Her gaze shifted from his face to his chest. His pulse quickened. Would she give him measure for measure and…

She leaned over and plopped the slice of pear onto his right nipple.

The cool, sticky pear and the touch of her slender fingers sent a shudder of desire hurtling toward his heated shaft. Ah, ’twas torture of the sweetest kind.

Hilarious Read for Halloween: Haints in Hollywood by Patricia Preston

spooky_scene

Through the month of October I plan to spotlight Halloween or scary themed books on Sundays, just to get in the mood for my favorite holiday at month’s end.

So I’m starting off spotlighting a very funny Halloween treat: Haints in Hollywood by Patricia Preston.

haints in hollywood

I have to preface this by saying if you haven’t read Patricia’s short story Laid to Rest, you really should before you read Haints in Hollywood. First, it’s one of the funniest books I’ve ever read. Darlene, the heroine, is just priceless. Maybe it’s because I’m from the South, but I know these characters. I daresay I’m related to some of them. And it’s just a fun read.

Once you’ve stopped rolling on the floor, grab your Kindle and download Haints for a double dose of Darlene, this time beset with more dead and supernatural creatures. She and her dumb and dumber duo of Ritchie and Tommy Ray take on a haunted ghost town called Hollywood and the fun begins again.

Haints in Hollywood is available at Amazon for just .99. Start your October off right with this hilariously haunting read.

Interview with Ashley York and The Irish Warrior

IrishWarrior_300

Today I’ve got Ashley York with me, talking about her new release The Irish Warrior and some other really fun and fascinating things about her!

1. Tell us a little bit about your new release.

Sean O’Cisoghe was a character I first introduced in The Gentle Knight. He is a handsome warrior from Drogheda, Ireland. The story begins with him facing the fact that the lass he’d lusted over had married another. He’s not a happy man. He’s not the most chivalrous type preferring battle to conversation. When  a “lad” calls the horse out from under him, he finds he must see the woman to her brother for her own safety.

2.  What was your inspiration for this story?

It was The Gentle Knight. Peter fell in love with Brighit but before they’re even  married he has all these other men from Drogheda falling all over her. When he meets Sean, Peter’s impression of him is not only that he lusts after his betrothed but that he is a formidable warrior. This will all come into play with the last book in the Norman Conquest Series, The Seventh Son.

3.  I am a fanatic about my character names. Are the character names special in any way?

They are. I’m Irish and Scottish so they’re names I’ve heard. The spelling it is what dictates whether they’re Irish or Scottish because they are both Celts.

4.  What was your process for writing this book?  Is this different or the same as other books you’ve written?

I think I’m getting more productive in my writing. I had intended this book to be shorter than it is but I needed to tell the story until it was finished.

5.   Do you have plans for a sequel to this book?

Next up will be The Seventh Son which I had already started when I realized Sean’s story would help bridge the time span for the readers. The Seventh Son begins with Brighit first leaving Drogheda to go the Priory. It covers some important revelations about her family and why her brother, Tadhg, will no longer be married to his love, Tisa O’Brien. Things that Brighit is not aware of in The Gentle Knight like the reason she gets sent to the Priory to begin with.

6.  Who is your favorite romance hero or heroine and why?  What qualities do they possess that make them memorable?

Robin Hood Prince of Thieves version – he faces conflict head on and oh by the way yeah he likes that woman – the one he would die for.

7.  Who was the first romance author and book you read?

Janet Daily – Ride The Thunder. I remember we were traveling cross-country and I wanted to see these big horn sheep. When we lived in Colorado a short time later, we would regularly go to Rocky Mountain National Park and see them. They are just beautiful.

Now, Lightning Round:

8.  What is your favorite amusement park ride?  merry go round

9.  Tea or coffee?  coffee

10.  French manicure or color (and if color, what color)?  french manicure

11.  Beach or mountains? not fair to have to pick!

12.  Chocolate or vanilla? chocolate

13.  Boxers, briefs or commando? commando

14.  Blond, brunette or redhead? (preferred men’s hair color) brown which isn’t the same as brunette

15.  Would you rather skydive or scuba dive? no thanks

16.  Would you rather vacation in Hawaii, Vegas or London? not for me

Thank you, Ashley!  I enjoyed our little session. 🙂 Ashley’s new release, The Irish Warrior, is available at Amazon.

Blurb:

Outcast and alone, Thomasina MacDonell is hell bent on finding her brother, the only person who can thwart their father’s latest scheme to offer her as payment for his gambling debts. Disguised as a lad, she defiantly sets off on foot to locate him—never expecting to find a handsome, Irish warrior riding her beloved horse. The warrior’s offer of help and unsolicited advice on how to be manlier sparks an intimate desire to reveal her more feminine side.

Rejected by the love of his life, Sean O’Cisoghe wants simply to return home and heal his broken heart. When a young “lad” steals the horse out from under him, he discerns the spirited woman may be in way over her head against her ruthless father. Finding her brother while keeping her would-be betrothed at bay, Sean must confront the fact that Thomasina has stolen his heart. Will Norman soldiers out for his blood and shifting clan alliances cut short their growing passion?

Excerpt:

Sean had expected her to struggle which was why he had her arm tucked between his body and hers, and her other arm held tight to her side. What he had not expected was to be so affected by her. Alarm bells were sending waves of regret—and overwhelming desire—coursing through him. Not one of his finest moments. If she ever settled down, she’d certainly find his arousal as upsetting as her anticipated punishment. He had no plans to actually slap her bottom, he just wanted honest answers. He found a threat worked best.

“So before I land my hand on yer arse since ye’re so deserving—oof.” Her elbow poked into his stomach, knocking the air out of him. He pulled her closer in to him and raised his knees to keep her lodged there. “—how about ye try telling me the truth for once and then I can be on my way.”

“Ye whoreson! Who do ye think ye are? Let me go!” She continued her struggles.

Her tempting bottom wiggling from side to side was hard to ignore. He needed to disarm her and quickly. “What? Nae clearing of yer throat to sound like a lad?”

“Let me go.” She pulled her knees in and managed to plow into his groin. The pain excruciating. He reacted with a hard slap to her bottom. She stilled. He held his breath until the sharp pain lessened then yanked her legs out straight.

He adjusted her away from him to ease the pressure on his groin. She didn’t need to know specifically what she had managed to do. “Try that again and I’ll make ye sorry.”

“I’ll make ye sorry!” she hollered back at him.

He didn’t hide the smile. She remained motionless across his lap. Her delightful bottom at his disposal but he refrained from touching her.

“I’m not an idiot. I ken when ye’re lying to me and here I’ve done nothing but try to assist ye.”

“Assist me? Was that when ye insulted me? Told me I was girly?”

“Ye are a girl!”

“And is that what ye wanted me to tell ye?” She rolled back so she could look him in the face. “Is that why ye teased me mercilessly?”

“Nae! I wanted ye to remember to act like a boy, damn it! Ye kept slipping up! How could I take ye to the village with everyone seeing ye for what ye are? They’d have been all over ye like ticks on a dog.”

“Ye bastard!” She started kicking her legs with wild abandon. “Let me go. Let me go.”

With one arm wrapped around her narrow waist, he stood, holding her like a sack of corn. Placing her away from him, he held each arm in a firm grip against her side. She hunched forward, breathing heavy from the exertion. And all he could think about was covering her mouth with his, of tasting her lips, her skin, of running his fingers through her tangled mane. He was near exploding with desire for her.

“Stop this! I deserve to ken the truth.” Sean’s voice sounded strained and he prayed she wouldn’t realize why. “Thomasina!”

It was a beautiful name. It fit her perfectly.

Closing her mouth, Tommy looked to be getting herself under control. Her eyes on him, she shook as if overcome by his audacity. Mayhap he should have taken to paddling her as she so deserved but he feared he’d feel worse than she would. Beating a woman was not in his nature. That one spank had been an unexpected reaction to pain. Slapping her bottom was the farthest thing from what he wanted to do with it.

“Truth!” he groaned aloud. “Put me out of my misery.”

She looked surprised at his outburst then took a shaky breath. “Yea! Ye deserve the truth.”

“And do ye ken the truth?” Sean leveled his gaze. “I dunna need any more pretenses here. Not now.”

Not when his body yearned to be betwixt her legs as he pounded into her, receiving his need, answering with her own passion. She had no idea. She would have no idea. He kept his gaze fixed on her face despite the heaving breasts and the sweat trickling down her neck into places he’d like to follow with his tongue.

Medieval Monday ~ First Kiss from Betrothal

Medieval Monday is back, with a new twist. This time around we post excerpts that fulfill a different requirement each week. This week we must post an excerpt that involves a kiss. So my excerpt will be from my medieval series Time Enough to Love, the first book of which is Betrothal, with Alyse and Geoffrey’s first kiss.

MedMon

EXCERPT:

betrothal_1600x2400_96dpi

“Would you share something else besides news, Sir Geoffrey?”

“That I would, little maid.” He spun around before she could back away. He darted his hand out to secure hers again and raised it to his mouth. “It seems, however, that I must be content with this.” He grazed her skin with his lips, skimming over the surface of her flesh with a floating touch that made her shiver. “And with my news. You know the king called for a joust, a Round Table, at Windsor next week to celebrate the princess’s betrothal?”

Alyse nodded and frowned. The mere thought of jousting sent a quiver of dread down her spine. But his statement was hardly news; the court had been preparing for the tournaments for weeks.

“It has been decreed by His Majesty that on the first day the festivities will begin with a procession of ladies and knights of King Arthur’s court, starting at the Tower of London and winding through the town out to the lists. There are to be twenty-five knights on the king’s side who will joust and fight in a pas d’armes. So there needs be twenty-five ladies as well, to escort them to the field.”

She nodded again. “Princess Joanna rides in this procession.” Her part in the festivities had been determined last week. Did he have anything truly new to impart?

“You have been chosen to be one of the ladies.”

Alyse’s mouth dropped open and a thrill coursed through her. “But I am only Princess Joanna’s attendant, Sir Geoffrey. Usually such honors are reserved for the queen and Princess Isabella’s ladies, or the Duchesses and Countesses in the Royal Family. Why did they choose me?”

“Because I am to be one of the knights, and I begged a boon of the king to allow you to be my lady.”

She stared at him in shock, almost unbelieving, though she knew he would not lie about such a thing. To think she owed such an honor to the man she would soon call husband, that he had asked the king himself to grant the favor, made her heart beat an unsteady march in her chest. Alyse parted her lips to thank him when he swooped forward, secured her chin in his hand and kissed her.

Strangely soft, yet very sweet, his touch sent a searing bolt straight to her stomach, setting it afire. After moments that seemed an eternity, his mouth slackened on hers as though he would release her. Then he flicked the tip of his tongue across the hard-pressed seam of her mouth, testing for another invitation.

With a gasp she jumped back, drawing a chuckle from Geoffrey, who had the grace to glance around to make sure they had not been observed. “Be not discomfited, sweet. We are safe in our conversation.”

“’Twas not in our conversation that I feared harm, my lord.” Lord, ’twas difficult to sound outraged when she could still feel his lips on hers.

“Come, my lady, ’twas only courtly affection I did show you.” Geoffrey’s words might have been believable if not for the wicked grin that accompanied them.

Only Marriage Will Do is On Sale!

My publisher informed me that Only Marriage Will Do, the second book of my House of Pleasure Georgian  romance series,  is on sale this month and next month for .99! If you haven’t read it yet, here’s a great opportunity to get a great book at a great price. 🙂

Marriage new full

Not every happy-ever-after begins at “I do.”

When the man of her dreams rescues Lady Juliet Ferrers from the villain claiming to be her husband, she is sure she has found her one true love. But is she free to marry him? Not to be deterred, Juliet arranges for her hero to escort her to her family estate in far off Northern England—hoping that along the way she can win his love—and his hand…

Captivated by Juliet’s sweetness and beauty, Captain Amiable Dawson can’t help but be spellbound by the promise of a life with her. But the spell breaks when questions arise about her marital status. Soon the upstanding Amiable is unsure if he is indeed married to Juliet. And when his rival absconds with her, Amiable must choose between the law of the land and his heart’s desire to rescue Juliet once more…

And here’s an excerpt to whet your appetite:

The clock on the mantle chimed the quarter hour. After one o’clock in the morning and, despite the excitement of the day, her escape from London, her afternoon nap and its disturbing dream, Juliet still couldn’t sleep.

After almost an hour of tossing and turning in her wretched bed, she’d sent Glynis to the kitchen to see if they had kept hot water over the fire. Perhaps a bath would soothe her enough to make sleep possible. Had she brought her lavender oil? So calming. Surely that would help.

She slipped on her robe and padded to her traveling trunk at the end of the bed. She lifted the lid and pulled out the box that held her soaps and perfumes. As she checked the vials, a tentative knock sounded at the door.

“Come in, Glynis.” She uncapped a vial and sniffed the contents. Jasmine. No. Not for the bath.

The door opened.

“Are they bringing the tub? I think the lavender oil will help me relax.”

“Very good, my lady.” The deep masculine voice froze her, vial in hand.

Her head snapped up.

A towering male figure stood shadowed in the doorway.

Dear God, Philippe had found her.

“Or is it Mrs. Dawson perhaps?”

No accent. He was not Philippe. A hired thug sent to kidnap her?

Strength drained away. She dropped the box and whirled around, seeking a way out of the room that suddenly seemed to close in on her.

Bottles crashed and the reek of jasmine filled the room. Juliet shrieked and stumbled back behind the bed. Trapped. Easy prey.

The man raced toward her, calling out something she couldn’t hear for the blood pounding in her ears. The candle he carried blew out. He cursed and reached for her.

“Nooo! Get away. Don’t touch me.” Slapping at his hands, she twisted to avoid him and landed with a thud, flat on her back. Air rushed out of her lungs.

He sped around the end of the bed.

She struggled to scream for Glynis, but produced only a high-pitched squeak.

The man knelt beside her.

Dear Lord, where was her rescuer now?

Only Marriage Will Do is available on AMAZON now for only .99!

Jenna’s 411 ~ 9/25/2015 The Plant that Ate Jenna Jaxon

26572416_s

Welcome back to another week’s installment of Jenna’s 411! Life is busier than ever.

The Plant that Ate Jenna Jaxon

This post is in lieu of a real Jenna’s 411 post, but I wanted to let you know why I’ve been so quiet on the blog and on social media.

I’ve been eaten by a plant!

AUDREY 2 #4

Audrey #4–the final plant. It will be a bit more embellished. And sing and dance. 🙂

That’s right, Audrey 2 from Little Shop of Horrors, has gobbled me whole. I’ve been working night and day to help get this production up by next Thursday. And as I told you in a previous Jenna 411, not only am I doing props for the show, I’m acting in it as well! I haven’t been on stage in almost 20 years, but I love this show so much I kind of bullied my way into the troupe.

I’ve cut back on my sleeping to about 4-5 hours a night, which is not enough for me any more, I can tell you!

AUDREY 2 #1

And I’m trying to finish up Only A Mistress Will Do so vigorously that I’ve taken to writing longhand anywhere I possibly can. In-between classes, waiting in line for  anything, during lunch.

So I’ve been much absent elsewhere, for which I apologize profoundly. But, the productionAUDREY 2 #3 will be finished on October 4 and hopefully things will be back to normal chaos. (No guarantees on that, however!)

So if you bear with me for another week, I’ll be turning out Cover Spots, Medieval Mondays, Jenna’s 411, and some new craft oriented posts as well.

So enjoy the pics of our Audrey 2 that we rented for the show. So exciting! We finally got to work with it and the puppeteer at rehearsal tonight. Which was awesome!

I so love this show! See you in two weeks!

So, how’s your week been?

Medieval Monday ~ Betrayal: Animal Attraction

Medieval Monday is back, with a new twist. This time around we post excerpts that fulfill a different requirement each week. This  week we must post a scene with an animal. So my excerpt will be from Betrayal, Book 2 of my medieval series Time Enough to Love.

MedMon

EXCERPT:

“I would have you ride with me at least part of the way, my lady, if you have a mind to. We may then avail ourselves of the excellent weather and I of your charming company. The carriage will be there if you tire.”

Her spirits rose at his words. “Oh, Thomas, I would very much like to ride with you. ’Twould be such fun.” She all but danced on her toes in eagerness. “I have had little chance to ride these many months and have sorely missed it.” She sent him a heartfelt smile. “Thank you!” Impetuously, she reached up to press a quick kiss to his cheek.

“You are most welcome, my dear.” He returned the smile, though his eyes held a peculiar gleam. “So, will this gown serve for riding?”

“Aye, it will.” She hastily made her ablutions, humming under her breath with excitement. The promise of a ride had brightened her day considerably.

When she was ready, he offered his arm and led her down to the courtyard just as the sun rose. Thomas stopped at a well-proportioned chestnut mare with a white blaze down her nose and two white stockings.

Alyse’s mouth dropped open, and she dashed toward her waiting mount to run a soft hand down the noble nose and pat the sleek, proud neck. “She is beautiful, Thomas!”

“She is yours.” She gasped and clamped her hand to her mouth to contain a squeal of joy. “A wedding present to you from His Majesty, the king.”

“From the king!” She stood stock still, the significance of the gift washing through her, and her elation cooled.

He was trying to make amends for the true husband he had taken from her.

She shook her head. Such unkind thoughts about the king were dangerous. And whatever had gone before, Thomas was now her husband in truth.

Alyse closed her eyes and choked back a sob. She had tried so diligently not to think of Geoffrey these past weeks. The saving grace of the wedding and last night had been the confusion created by the ceremony, the feast, and the bedding. After Thomas had disrobed, the sight of him—and the feel of his body on hers—had banished all other thoughts.

Only when he had suggested she pretend he was Geoffrey did those memories break through. She had cursed him then for bringing back her heartache, though he had not meant to hurt her. He had merely wanted her to be able to play her part in the false consummation. And it had worked, although not as he had perhaps expected. Everything about Thomas—his touch, his scent, the feel of his body on hers—had differed from her experience with Geoffrey. That difference had allowed her to push the memories aside once more and fix her attention on the counterfeit.

And she had to be grateful for his unquestioning acceptance of her decision not to lie with him. It had been a harder decision to make than she had expected; her long hesitation before giving him her answer attested to that. Lady Carlyle’s presence, of course, had been a factor. Jealousy had burned strong in both of them last night. But Thomas was her husband, and even though she was not in love with him, she did not want him to stray. Mayhap she should have said aye to his question. Should have put Geoffrey behind her and started a new life. But she could not make herself say the word. Jealous or not, she needed more time before she could agree to that final betrayal of her love.

“Alyse?” Thomas had finished checking the girths and now stood before her. “What is wrong, sweet?”

The genuine concern in his voice smote her conscience. Without a word, she threw her arms around his waist. He was a good man. The circumstances were not his fault, any more than they were hers or Geoffrey’s.

“Oh, a sudden sadness at the changes afoot, ’tis all.” She released him and dashed the tears from her eyes.

“They are many, ’tis true. And here is another, cheerier one for you to consider.” He hoisted Alyse up onto the horse and settled her comfortably astride. “Will you name your mount? She had some outlandish long name. The stable lad told me, but I have forgotten.” Thomas swung up onto his charger, Falcon.

“I can name her?” She forgot her tears as the new task engaged her. “I must think on it then. I will find the perfect name for the perfect horse.” She smiled at him as she patted the warm brown neck before her.

The morning had regained some of its splendor. A good omen for the beginning of their journey.

Betrayal and all books in the series are available at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Smashwords.

Hope you enjoyed this excerpt! See you next week!

Cover Spot: The Heart of the Phoenix by Barbara Bettis

THE HEART OF THE PHOENIX

THE HEART OF THE PHOENIX, the first in the Brotherhood of the Phoenix series, re-released Sept. 22 through Amazon Encore, and I’m so excited for Sir Stephen and Lady Evelynn to be in the forefront again. Here’s a glimpse of their story.

Some call him a ruthless mercenary; she calls him the knight of her heart.

Memories

Lady Evelynn’s childhood hero is home—bitter, hard, tempting as sin. And haunted by secrets. A now-grown Evie offers friendship, but Sir Stephen’s cruel rejection crushes her, and she resolves to forget him. Yet when an unexpected war throws them together, she finds love isn’t so easy to dismiss. If only the king hadn’t betrothed her to another.

Can Be Cruel

Sir Stephen lives a double life while he seeks the treacherous outlaws who murdered his friends. Driven by revenge he thinks his heart is closed to love until his childhood shadow, Lady Evie, unexpectedly challenges that belief. He rebuffs her, but he can’t forget her, although he knows she’s to wed the king’s favorite.

And Deadly

When his drive for vengeance leads to Evie’s kidnapping, Stephen must choose between retribution and the love he’s denied too long. Surely King John will see reason. Convict the murderers; convince the king. Simple. Until a startling revelation threatens everything.

Humor and Sex and Romance – oh my! by Sheri Fredricks

Monica Beggs Cover

We’ve read stories with angry sex. Then there are stories with uncontrolled sex. And drunk sex, maybe brother’s best friend sex, and if you’re into it—step brother sex. (sorry, in my mind I can’t go the way of Step-Father sex).

How about humorous sex? We all know humor and sex can go hand in hand.

MONICA BEGGS laughing couple

In all my stories, I’m not shy about mixing humor into my sex scenes. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t hesitate to add giddiness, fear, regret, or other emotions either. But I think this world is often too serious…and I like to laugh.

Sex in stories can be an emotional tool. It allows my characters to show their feelings. On the other hand, they can lack emotions or hide them altogether to create a specific character trait.

In Monica Beggs, I’ve taken two hardcore professions and shined a light of delight upon them both. While Monica and Finn both take their jobs seriously, they go easy on themselves when the time is right.

The question is: Will it be the right time for them both, at the same time?
