Weekend Writing Warriors ~ 03/10/2024 ~ The Lyon’s Paw~ A Look of Astonishment

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors !

I’m back this week with a new snippet from The Lyon’s Paw. It’s part of Dragonblade Publishing’s Lyon’s Den shared world that is released and is available on Amazon and in KU!

The Lyon’s Paw

BLURB:

He’s not the type of man to forgive—but he’ll never forget her.

Geoffrey, Lord Longford is between a rock and a hard place. His estates are about to be sold to keep the earldom afloat so without a huge infusion of cash, his life is about to change for the worse. When his best friend suggests Geoffrey marry an heiress, he’s despondent but resigned. Despite his reservations, he seeks out Mrs. Dove-Lyon at The Lyon’s Den to find a suitable young lady with a suitable fortune.

Diana Edgerton sacrificed years of her life taking care of her uncle until he died, but that sacrifice is about to be rewarded handsomely. His will leaves Diana the sole heir to a vast fortune, but with one horrifying stipulation—she must be married in order to inherit it. Unfortunately, terrible rumors about Diana and her uncle have made her all but unmarriageable. In desperation, Diana’s aunt suggests she visit The Lyon’s Den and consult Mrs. Dove-Lyon to arrange a match to save her inheritance.

With two clients seemingly made for each other, a happy ending is all but assured.

Except Geoffrey and Diana have an unfortunate history—one that makes their union almost an impossibility. With so much hanging in the balance, can the two of them overcome the fact they despise one another long enough to secure the possibility of a future together?

This excerpt is from the prologue of The Lyon’s Paw. Geoffrey, Lord Longford and Miss Diana Edgerton are on an outing during the Season in 1819. I’m moving several pages ahead now. Diana and Geoffrey have moved on to the Serpentine to see the ducks. And Diana becomes alarmed. We continue on today as Diana tries to protect herself from the indecent gentleman she fears will accost her.

EXCERPT:

She pressed closer to Lord Longford. Perhaps if she could get behind him, the other man wouldn’t continue his pursuit. Glancing over her shoulder, she spied the man actually heading toward them. This couldn’t be happening. She tugged on his sleeve. “My lord, we need to leave.”

A quick look and a smile from Lord Longford were all the response Diana received. She stepped to his side, not wishing to have to shout at him and draw even more attention to herself. Her escort was exceedingly tall. She raised up on tiptoe and called, “Lord Longford!”

And a bit more . . .

Her voice had been louder than she’d thought, jolting Lord Longford out of his conversation and making him start at the loud noise. On tiptoe she overbalanced, and put her whole weight onto Lord Longford, who stared at her with a look of astonishment as he backpedaled in an attempt to keep from slipping down the bank. His booted feet skidded out from under him and swung to and fro, his arms windmilling to no avail as he continued backwards into the Serpentine where he hit with a loud splash and spray of water.

EXCERPT:

From the corner of her eye Diana glimpsed a lady’s gloved finger pointing in her direction. Surely, the lady must be pointing out the ducks to her companion, or perhaps some of the flora and fauna the Serpentine had to offer its admirers. She glanced up at Lord Longford who was speaking animatedly with her aunt about flowers. They were one of her aunt’s true passions. She supposed Lord Longford liked them as well by the avid look on his face.

Had he missed seeing the lady pointing at her? Or had the lady actually been indicating the ducks?

Trying to calm herself, reassure herself that no one was gossiping about her, Diana stole another look at the park’s patrons—only to find several knots of people staring directly at her, then putting their heads together and whispering…including the horrid gentleman who’d made lewd remarks to her last evening.

Oh, Lord, was he following her? Did he mean to make the same awful proposals to her again?

And a bit more . . .

She had to get away from here and quickly.  Diana put her hand to her head, ready to plead a headache. “My lord, I believe I am unwell.” That was putting it mildly. “I fear we will need to leave. My lord?”

Entranced with his conversation, Lord Longford apparently didn’t hear Diana’s pleas.

Very well, she would make him listen.

They had stopped at the edge of the water, near a pretty patch of reeds and water grasses with pink flowers scattered here and there over them and several trees overhanging the water, their branches swaying in the slight breeze. A beautiful setting for a courting couple, just not her and not now. She looked back at the dreadful man, and he leered at her. Dear lord, what was she to do?

Weekend Writing Warriors ~ 02/25/2024 ~ The Lyon’s Paw~ Mourning Him In Her Heart

Taking up where we left off last week.

EXCERPT:

One look at her escort’s kind visage revealed no judgement, only kind concern.

“We were, my lord, very close. He depended on me to take care of him. No one else in the family would raise a hand to help him.” Thoughts of her cousins whining that they couldn’t waste their lives taking care of a cranky invalid always made her furious. Uncle George hadn’t been a burden. He’d been frank and outspoken. Gruff, some would say, but that was just his way.

Diana blinked back tears. Almost a year since her uncle’s death and she still mourned him in her heart.

And a bit more . . .

Uncle George had always been her favorite uncle, the man who appeared unexpectedly from his travels in distant lands with marvelous stories to tell about places like India and China. She could sit and listen to him spin his tales for hours. She missed that most now that he was gone. He’d doted on Diana all her life and she’d been so grateful, she hadn’t thought twice about taking care of him when he needed her.

“My niece took care of her uncle night and day for over two years, my lord.” Aunt Frances spoke up from behind them.

“Was it your husband, Mrs. Beaumont?” Lord Longford turned toward her, concern in his expressive blue eyes.

“Oh, no, my lord. My husband is living, thank God.” She closed her eyes briefly, and shook her head. “No, he was Diana’s father’s older brother. He always looked out for her after her parents died.” She made a helpless little gesture. “As much as he could, that is. Mr. Edgerton traveled extensively in the Orient. He was a shareholder in the East India Company.”

The Lyon’s Paw is on pre-order on Amazon for the pre-order price of just .99! Grab your copy here! The book will release in 3 days on February 28, 2024!

Weekend Writing Warriors ~ 02/18/2024 ~ The Lyon’s Paw~ An Outing in Hyde Park

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors !

I’m finally back this week with a new WIP The Lyon’s Paw. It’s part of Dragonblade Publishing’s Lyon’s Den shared world and it releases in just 10 days!

Unfortunately, terrible rumors about Diana and her uncle have made her all but unmarriageable.

EXCERPT:

For Diana, dressed in her newest pale blue promenade dress of cambric muslin, trimmed with frilly white lace on both the dress and the matching Spencer and hat, the day had taken on a dreamlike feeling, mostly because she was in the unlikely company of Lord Longford, one of the handsomest gentlemen she’d ever seen. Perhaps her aunt had been correct in saying having a Season would change her life for the better.

Diana hadn’t thought that true until last evening. Not with all the gossiping busy bodies listening to the nasty rumors her own cousins had started about her. But then last evening Lord Longford had begged an introduction so he could ask her for a dance. Fairy tales apparently did come true sometimes.

“I am sorry the sun is still quite warm, Miss Edgerton.” His lordship’s deep voice rumbled pleasantly in her ear. They were walking arm in arm around the Serpentine, accompanied, of course, by her aunt. “Another day perhaps we could ride here instead.”

And a bit more . . .

“Thank you, my lord. That is very kind of you.” She smiled up at him, still awed that he’d asked her for this outing. He looked truly splendid in a dark blue cutaway coat, snowy white shirt and fashionably tied cravat. His fawn-colored breeches and tall Hessian boots made him look very dashing indeed. “I love to ride very much, though I have not been able to do so since the death of my uncle.”

The smile on Lord Longford’s face turned to a more sober mien. “Please accept my condolences, Miss Edgerton.” The tall gentleman patted her hand as it lay comfortably and very naturally in the crook of his elbow. “I understand you and your uncle were very close.”

Diana shot a glance up at Lord Longford, trying to judge if his comment was barbed, a reference to the vile rumors her jealous cousins had put about in Town that she and her uncle had carried on an illicit affair while she was taking care of him in his last years. She’d endured many such remarks in the past months.

Weekend Writing Warriors ~ 02/04/2024 ~ As Long As You’re Mine ~ “You Fell Asleep?”

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors !

I’m back this week with more from my WIP As Long As You’re Mine. I plan on releasing this book sometime in summer 2024, so stay tuned to find out when to expect it.

As Long As You’re Mine

BLURB:

Desperate to marry a man who will not touch her heart, Lady Amantha Easton has pre-arranged to get herself compromised by a gentleman who fits that bill. By mischance, she enters the wrong bedroom where she instead meets Rafael Beauregard, an American architect and charming bad boy. Despite his attractive and playful attitude, Amantha leaves the room untouched (almost) and undetected by her father. She resolves to contact her prospective husband the next day and try the compromise again.

Unfortunately, while waiting for her would be lover, Amantha gives in and kisses Rafe–and is then discovered by her father and forced to marry him. Amanth’s greatest fear is that she will fall in love with him but that he will never fall for her given the circumstances of their marriage. Despite her fears, Amantha decides the best way to prevent her inevitable heartbreak is by making Rafe fall in love with her.

In today’s snippet Amantha is on the brink of putting her desperate plan into operation. She’s afraid to marry a man she loves for fear he won’t love her and will break her heart–just like her father broke her mother’s heart. Her mother died a miserable woman and Amantha refuses to follow in her footsteps. So when her father refuses the man she wants to marry, she takes matters into her own hands to force the issue. I’ve skipped ahead a little bit to chapter 2. Enjoy!

EXCERPT:

Ignoring the wild fluttering in her stomach, Amantha straightened her shoulders, shook back her hair and, with a determined nod, turned the handle.

The dim interior of the room, lit only by the thin moonlight spilling around the drapes at the single window, made Amantha pause as her eyes adjusted to the lack of light. She then crept to the foot of a massive four-poster bed that jutted into the center of the room. For a moment she simply stood there, looking down at the shadowy lump under the coverlet. A gentle snore rumbled from the still figure.

“You fell asleep?” she murmured into the darkness. She would’ve thought the man would be wide-awake and eager to take her into his arms, into his bed. Disgusted by Raif’s lack of interest, she turned to go. It was one thing to want a man she could hold at arm’s length, but not one so weak-willed he had no spine—or enthusiasm—whatsoever.

And a bit more . . .

She sighed. It would be wonderful to marry a man who knew her, who understood her and would love her. A man she could love in return. But that was the fairytale her father had spun and a far cry from the reality of his own marriage. She shook off the thought. After tonight, Raif would at least understand the depth of her determination if nothing else.

She moved to the far side of the bed, careful not to make a noise. Another glance toward the closed door and her heart sped up at faint words audible in the hallway. Had her father come that quickly? She needed time to get into bed with Raif, time to wake him up so he could at least look like they had been in the throes of passion. She had to be thoroughly compromised for this to work, although she supposed just being in the room like this would assure her ruination. But she had to make certain.

In today’s snippet Amantha is on the brink of putting her desperate plan into operation.

EXCERPT:

With her hand resting lightly on the handle, a creak behind Amantha made her eyes pop open as she whirled around, certain she’d been discovered at last, however, the corridor remained empty save for the maid and the pale-yellow light of the oil sconces. Weak with relief, she turned to the maid. “Sara, I need you to find my father, Lord Clarendon, and fetch him to this room.”

“This room, Lady Amantha?” The frown on Sara’s face showed only her incomprehension of the task given her. “Whatever for?”

“There is someone desperately ill inside.” It was the only excuse she could think of that would bring her father at this time of night. “It’s one of my cousins, Lord Abercrombie, who I dined with tonight. He came to my room and said he wasn’t feeling well, so I told him I would come check on him before I retired.”

And a bit more . . .

Sara simply stared at her and Amantha searched frantically for some way to galvanize the maid do her bidding. “It may have been that the shrimps were bad. He looked a ghastly shade of green when I last saw him.”

“But you shouldn’t be here, my lady.” Unconvinced, Sara continued to stare at her indignantly. “This is the gentlemen’s wing.” According to the scandalized tone of her voice, the maid’s fatigue had given way to ingrained propriety.

“Yes, I know. I’ll leave as soon as my father arrives, but someone must stay with my cousin until then in cased he worsens. My father will know if the doctor should be summoned.” That should satisfy Sara. “You wouldn’t want anything to happen to Lord Abercrombie, would you?”

“Oh, no, my lady.” Sara squared her shoulders. “I’ll go straight away.”

“My father was in the library when I last left him around midnight.”

“Very good, my lady. I’ll be back in three ticks.” The young maid spun around and took off at a brisk pace.

Amantha stayed completely still until Sara turned the corner, then let out the breath she’d been holding. Sagging against the door, she paused as the enormity of what she was about to do sank in. But it was the only way. If she wanted this struggle to be over, she had to seize her chance tonight.

Weekend Writing Warriors ~ 01/21/2023 ~ As Long As You’re Mine ~ The Gentleman’s Wing

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors !

I’m back this week with more from my WIP As Long As You’re Mine. I plan on releasing this book sometime in summer 2024, so stay tuned to find out when to expect it.

In today’s snippet Amantha tries again to put her desperate plan into operation but has forgotten one scandalous detail.

EXCERPT:

Dutifully, the maid held the garment as Amantha slipped her arms through the sleeves. She couldn’t afford any more mistakes. Tying the belt, Amantha started down the corridor, darting her gaze back and forth to detect any other movement. “Can you come with me, please Sara? I need your help with something urgent.”

“What’s the matter, my lady?” The maid’s tone was suspicious, but the well-trained servant followed Amantha nonetheless.

“Just come with me.” They headed down the corridor to the juncture by the main staircase where Amantha stopped short and peeked around the corner, searching about for some other wakeful guest. Seeing no one, she scurried across the wide expanse of carpet, Sara at her heels, toward her ultimate goal: the gentlemen’s wing.

And a bit more . . .

They hurried into the corridor and Amantha breathed a sigh of relief. So far so good. She slowed her pace and continued down the corridor, counting the doors carefully. At the sound of laughter on the stairs, Amantha’s heart lurched sickeningly. She would be caught and then God only knew what her father would do to her. She threw herself against the wall, pulling Sara with her, but after a few moments the sound faded, and Amantha could breathe again. Perhaps, at last, her luck had turned.

Even more determined after that scare, she headed for the fourth chamber on the right where her soon-to-be lover awaited her. The thought began a flutter in her stomach that escalated with each step until she finally stood at the door, trembling once more. She stared at the wood panel and closed her eyes. This was it.

Weekend Writing Warriors ~ 01/14/2023 ~ As Long As You’re Mine ~ A Crucial Detail

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors !

I’m back this week with more from my WIP As Long As You’re Mine. I plan on releasing this book sometime in summer 2024, so stay tuned to find out when to expect it.

As Long As You’re Mine

Despite her fears, Amantha decides the best way to prevent her inevitable heartbreak is by making Rafe fall in love with her.

In today’s snippet Amantha tries again to put her desperate plan into operation but has forgotten one scandalous detail.

EXCERPT:

Straightening her shoulders, Amantha was just about to slip out of the door when Sara appeared around the corner, her cap askew, her cheeks a hectic pink.

“Thank goodness.” With a sigh of relief, Amantha eased out of her room, closed the door with a soft click and beckoned the maid to follow her down the passageway.

“Where are you going dressed like that, my lady?” Puzzlement fought with exhaustion in Sara’s face as she took in Amantha’s appearance.

Amantha glanced down and gulped. Dressed in a frilly white night gown, with frothy lace at the high neckline and around the cuffs of the sleeves, she was the picture of a lady ready for her bed, not for traipsing around a manor house in the dead of night at a house party. In her haste to get her plan underway, she’d forgotten her robe.

“Oh, goodness, how silly of me,” Amantha darted back into the room, grabbed her pale rose robe, and stepped back into the corridor,“I’m so distressed I forgot my robe. Help me put this on before someone sees me.”
