Gifts for the Writer in Your Life

Last week I was racing around trying to find a Christmas gift for my RWA local chapter Secret Pal who is also a writer.  Was I successful?  Not really.  Oh, I ended up with a goodie bag full of swag for this great gal, but I could find nothing that “said” writer.

Earlier in the year my Secret Pal gave me a mug that has an old-fashioned typewriter on it.  I adore this mug and take it everywhere.  And even though she told me where she got it, that store carries one-of-a-kind articles that don’t get restocked.  It’s a catch as catch can type of situation in my neck of the woods.  So my Pal got swag, but not writer swag.

Then my husband asked for my Christmas list.  And though it’s got the big stuff that I want on it, I can’t just put down “writer themed stuff.”  So I got on the internet and did some research and hopefully it’s not too late for mail order, because I found some wonderful sites that carry all kinds of things for writers.

The first one is Holiday Gifts for Writers and Readers, which has some really cool stuff.  From a Women Writers Magnet Set that features such notables as Virginia Woolf and Jane Austin to Famous Author Action Figures to a writer-themed set of dishes, these fifteen suggestions should give you lots of ideas for pleasing your favorite author this Christmas or any time throughout the year.

But my favorite site is Cafe Press’s Writers of Romance Mugs website.  They over a hundred mug designs, many geared towards romance writers.

Some of my favorites are “Writers Do It Between the Sheets,”  “Erotica Writer Seeks Research Assistant, Apply Within,” “Writers Write–Everyone Else Makes Excuses,” and “Romance Author  E-Pubbed & Proud.”

Even better, these slogans are available not only on mugs, but on a variety of items:  t-shirts, sweatshirts, buttons, pins, badges, coasters, bags, bumper stickers, postcards.  Sounds like a treasure trove of swag to me!

And the last suggestion, which I thought was different and brilliant, comes from writer Jess Hartley who, in her blog post “The Best Holiday Gift For Writers” suggests reading some of the writer’s work and reviewing it for Goodreads, Amazon and Barnes & Noble.  You can put that on my Christmas List right now!

I hope your holiday shopping is going well–kudos to you if you’re already finished.  If you have any suggestions for super cool holiday gifts for writers please share.  I’ll pass them on to my loved ones. LOL

She is convinced no man will date a bald woman and arranges a one-night stand through Madame Evangeline’s popular service, 1Night Stand. With her new wig held firmly in place, Tamara arrives at the Castillo Hotel in Las Vegas for a night of passion and pleasure. Anything more than one night would mean exposing her bald head, and she will never do that to any man again.

Running into the Castillo Hotel, away from the paparazzi constantly at his heels, Josh Summers wants to spend his next few days locked away from the flashing lights and screaming fans. When he finds an incredibly sexy woman lying on his hotel room bed in nothing but lingerie, he thinks management has made a mistake. Leaving her behind, he heads for the lobby to get the situation rectified. But an unexpected text from Madame Evangeline sends him back to his room. Though unsure whether the woman on the bed is really his perfect match or just another fan believing him to be like his character on television, he knows he must find out, even if it means he must risk telling her his own secrets. If Tamara can handle his imperfections, she just might be his ideal woman.

5.  A Mouse in His Pocket by Patricia Green

Professor Buck Stillwater, eldest of the Stillwater siblings, is crazy about Jenny right from the beginning. If she’s mousy, it is in the most cute and lovable way. When she stumbles over his wheelchair, it feels like a little bit of heaven has fallen in his lap.

Unfortunately, Jenny has this tendency to get herself in trouble. Her insecurity is one problem, and it isn’t helped by her foolishly putting herself in dangerous situations. Buck isn’t likely to let her get away with these misbehaviors, and spanks her when she needs it. But, she makes the ultimate mistake of thoughtlessly disrespecting him. It looks like the relationship is over. He’s hurt and she is sick with guilt. She asks for punishment, knowing that she deserves it. But will Buck take her back after he takes that awful crop to her rear?

A Mouse in His Pocket is full of romance and sweet, loving discipline in a Christmas setting, but is not erotic. It is a prequel to Strong, Silent Type, and both are now available on Bethany’s Woodshed.

8.  Madame Eve’s 1Night Stand Holiday Anthology

For a gal like Susanna Corrigan who always believed in Santa Claus, refusing to keep his gift of a perfect man would be rude? And foolish, right?

Desiree Holt ~ He Came Upon a Midnight Clear

He needed a wife; she needed a man to want her. Could they accomplish both in one night?

D.L. Jackson ~ This Endris Night

When Shiya, a Yupik supermodel, goes home under the pretense of attending a 1NightStand Christmas party, but secretly hoping to lure a predator into the open, Alaska becomes an alien experience of the extraterrestrial kind.

Stacey Kennedy ~ All She Wants for Christmas is Her Dom

Nestled in the Alaskan snow-capped mountains, two lovers set out an adventure of pleasure and pain.

Rebecca Royce ~ I’ll be Mated for Christmas

This year she’ll have a Werewolf under her tree…if only she can be brave enough to take the gift.

Liia Ann White ~ Her First White Christmas

Clarissa Yip ~ Silent Night’s Seduction

Kidnapped to Alaska for an unwanted tryst, Lily meets the unexpected. Desire and lust sparks as truths unfold, but can she resist a Silent Night’s Seduction?

Madame Eve’s 1Night Stand Anthology is available in print only at Decadent Publishing, but each story of the anthology is available on its own at Decadent Publishing, Amazon, and Barnes & Noble.  And those who buy the anthology have a special treat:  a free download of Madame Eve’s Gift:  Nick  & Kathryn’s Story by Kate Richards.

Christmas Eve is finally here and Nicholas Castillo’s staff has trimmed the trees and decked the halls for the Gala. All is in readiness and even Kathryn, the pilot who is responsible for ferrying in Madame’s Eve’s 1Night Stand guests to the remote hotel in Castle Alaska has hung up her wings for the holiday. Even better, she’s Nicholas’s date for the evening.

Because she lost a bet.  But he’ll take a date with her any way he can get it because Nick has hopes that the Christmas spirit will help him to win over the woman he’s longed and lusted for since the first time her plane touched down outside his hotel. If only she didn’t think of him as a friend.

Kathryn wonders when Nick will take a hint. She’s even willing to put aside her comfy flying duds to don an elegant dress and stilettos for one night if it will make him notice that she’s a woman and hopefully attractive. But in the years they’ve known one another, she’s never had the nerve to tell him she’s interested, and why would a rich, handsome hotelier, a member of the Castillo family, be interested in a woman who rarely hangs around for more than a day or two before flying off to the wilds of Alaska’s interior. It will take a heaping dose of Christmas magic—or maybe Madame Eve’s own brand—to make this one work out!

9.  An Unforgettable Christmas by Tricia Wilson

Chelsea Roberts is facing her first Christmas alone. She has her best friends, but it still isn’t the same. Will an unexpected family connection bring a smile to her face again?

Nick Collins is facing the challenges of being an unexpected single father to a newborn. He has a big family, but is still lonely.

Can Chelsea let someone get close enough to love her through her sadness? Will Nick be able to trust someone enough to get close to himself and Jasmine?

Through a lot of tears and laughter, with the help of close friends and family, take the journey with Chelsea and Nick as they experience an unforgettable Christmas.

An Unforgettable Christmas is available at Amazon.  And Tricia is giving away a copy to one lucky commenter on the blog today.

10.  Cowboys in Charge by Starla Kaye

Cowboys in Charge  includes seven stories of strong, loving cowboys and the women who try their patience. These are romantic stories with a touch of domestic discipline/spanking.

Snowed in with Her Cowboy

James wants Kelly to quit work and start a family, but she resists the idea. Will he give up the idea of a family or will he give up Kelly?

Too Much Red at Christmas Time

Lizzie has a bizarre addiction to Christmas shopping and she can’t help herself, even knowing she will face the wrath of her husband who believes in domestic discipline.

For the Love of His Cowgirl

Amber missed the fun little games she and Adam used to play. There never seemed to be time for steamy sex, or even the spankings he’d occasionally given her for various infractions of rules or for misbehavior.

Could she entice him back, get the dwindling fires of their love going again?

Cowboys and Their Toys

Jennifer loved Jason and she’d trusted him as he led her into the BDSM lifestyle. But now he wanted to take things to a more intense level and she balked at it. Would she lose him if she didn’t agree to go 24/7?

Plus three more equally hot stories of cowboys and the women they love.

Cowboys in Charge is available at Black Velvet Seductions, Amazon, and All Romance E-Books.  And Starla is giving away a copy of this fab anthology to one commenter.

Six Sentence Sunday–12/11 All Wrapped Up: The Present

Happy Holidays!  And welcome back to Six Sentence Sunday.  Thank you for visiting today and previously if this is not your first time here.  I appreciate all comments, so please share!

Today, I’m spotlighting one of the stories in my Christmas Collection All Wrapped Up.  It’s a contemporary called The Present.  To this point, Tess has had to tell her sister’s boyfriend that she’s breaking up with him–two days before Christmas.  Now Hal has offered her the present he’d brought for Janice:  a pair of diamond earrings that would save out-of-work Tess.  However, Hal suggests that the earrings are payment for services rendered.

His dark eyes glittered wickedly. “For delivering your sister’s message, though there is another service you could do that would put paid to the account.”

Tess stared at him. Her pulse raced and her mouth turned dry as he pulled his shirt out of his pants and started to unbutton it. She glanced down at the diamonds in her hands then raised her chin. “What do you want me to do?”

Thanks for coming by.  Stop by the Journal tomorrow when I’ll have 12 Books of Christmas on my blog, complete with giveaways.  Meanwhile, check out the other wonderful authors on Six Sentence Sunday.

Thanks for stopping by!

Sweet Saturday Sample–12/10 Almost Perfect Released

Welcome back to my Sweet Saturday Sample!   Thanks for returning each week or for visiting for the first time. I appreciate everyone who stops by.

Today’s sample  is the final Sweet Saturday for my erotic Contemporary Almost Perfect.  It released yesterday, Friday, December 9, so I’m still on cloud nine!  So this week’s offering continues, still rated PG-13, though I’ve about run out of those sections of the book. LOL  Lets try a little later in the book, when Pam, now all alone, is faced with a dilemma.  Enjoy!

She woke from a disturbing dream about her pirate lover—who turned into her ex-husband. Rubbing her arms, she stretched and gazed out over the water.

No ship in sight, though the sun sat in an alarming position low in the western sky. A check of her watch said it was 4:45. If the Nautilus didn’t return soon, she would be in a bad way come nightfall.

Okay, what’s the worst-case scenario? Level one answer on Who Wants to Be A Millionaire? The ship doesn’t return tonight. What could she do to prepare for that eventuality? She shot a glance down the beach in the direction her ex had stalked. Nope. Not an option. Next.

She often watched disaster movies where people ended up marooned on desert islands, or as the last living things on earth. Surely she could draw on those as her resource for survival?

Ticking off a mental list of castaway-themed shows, she started with the obvious choice, Castaway. What would Tom Hanks do? First things first, of course. Food and water. Tom sipped water collected on leaves. A glance told her the bushes around her were dry. No water there. On to option number two. A stream? She could explore what little interior the island possessed. But if that proved a dead end, she’d have lost valuable light and time. This looked easier in Six Days Seven Nights. Of course, there had been two of them…. No! No depending on Roger.

“So what else did Tom Hanks do?” Speaking aloud focused her attention on what she could do by herself. Gather food came to mind as the next option. Coconuts. She shaded her eyes and craned her neck back, peering up the tall tree next to her. Were there even any nuts up there? So what else was available? Crabs? Sighing, she hurried onto the beach in search of crustaceans.

Next week I’ll have something different, probably a Christmas story in keeping with the season.  Now, follow this link to Sweet Saturday Sample to find more “sweet” offerings.

And don’t forget on Monday, December 12, I’m hosting the 12 Books of Christmas here on Jenna’s Journal.  Twelve diverse and wonderful writers are showing off their Christmas offerings, bringing you the opportunity to sample a dozen holiday stories full of cheer and a bit of romance–well a lot of romance–thrown in.  Come on back and check us out!

 Have a great weekend!

Making Your Characters Really Miserable: The Black Moment

With the whole rebel alliance counting on him, Luke Skywalker has one shot left to kill the Death Star.  His on-board targeting system has failed to work.  The Death Star has cleared the moon and is about to blast the planet killing everyone. And Darth Vader has Luke in his crosshairs.

Talk about a Black Moment for our hero!

Every movie, every book, every hero or heroine has their black moment.  It is that point at which things cannot get any worse for the H/H and they are forced to make a decision to act, usually doing the one thing that they would never have been caught dead doing in a million years.

In Star Wars, Luke’s black moment compels him to turn off his targeting computer and trust the Force to save the day.  And he does.  HEA or really HFN (until the Empire Strikes Back LOL).

Black Moments are essential in romance writing.  According to the website Learn the Elements of A Novel:  Structure and Plot, the “black moment” is the point in the novel “at which all is lost and the goal cannot be achieved.”  By this point in the story the hero has to struggle against external and internal forces until he/she reaches “a ‘Black’ moment, where the stakes are highest and danger at its worst. During this moment, the hero draws upon the new strengths or lessons he’s learned in order to take action and bring the story to a conclusion.”

When crafting the Black Moment, many writers have found the advice of Donald Maas extremely helpful.  Anna Campbell, in her excellent article, “Illuminating The Black Moment” cites Maas’s advice as being most helpful to her:

1.)  Work out the one thing your character would never do, then make him/her do it.

2.)  Work out the one thing your character would never sacrifice, then make him/her sacrifice it.

3.)  Work out your character’s greatest fear then make him/her face that.

Using one, two, or all three of these wrenching scenarios will help you craft the darkest black moment imaginable for your H/H.  And it is a matter of craft to pick and choose the perfect set of circumstances that will torment each particular hero/heroine from the beginning of the novel.  Anna Campbell suggests that the seeds of the black moment should be sown in the first pages of the novel, so we see the potential for it develop throughout.  And each Black Moment must be tailored to each individual hero.

To my mind, one of the best examples of crafting the Black Moment is in Jo Beverley’s historical romance Devilish.  The Marquess of Rothgar has vowed never to marry because his mother exhibited signs of madness and killed her second child. (We have been told this for four books previously.)  Then, Rothgar meets a woman who is the perfect match for him, his soul mate in every way who is deeply in love with him also but who, at the King’s command, must marry.  So Rothgar must choose to lose the love of his life or risk sowing the seeds of madness in future generations of his family.  (Read the book to find out how this Black Moment was resolved!)

And the blacker the moment, the sweeter the ultimate pay-off for the reader.   When, against all odds, the hero or heroine does the one thing he would never do, sacrifices the one thing he would never give up, or overcomes the crippling fear he/she has been struggling with, the reader experiences an emotional catharsis, a purging of all the built-up tension they have endured as the hero struggled.  The tighter you have wound the suspense, the greater the relief when things come right again.

I usually find myself struggling with crafting the perfect Black Moment, though in Almost Perfect, my erotic contemporary that releases on Friday, I pretty much knew about half-way through plotting what I wanted that moment to be.  Again, I won’t spoil it for you, but I tried to paint that moment with the inky black strokes of a midnight dreary.  I want to hear the reader shriek “No!  You can’t do that!” with a sob in their voice that would be sweet music to my ears.  I think authors not only torture their heroes, but their readers as well.  Because catharsis is good for all souls.

As a writer, do you struggle with creating the black moment?  Or does it come naturally to you?  Readers, do you enjoy this exquisite form of torture from the pen of your favorite authors?  Do you secretly thrill to be brought to the edge of your seat, as your hero/heroine is brought to the brink of destruction?  What is your favorite black moment in a romance novel?  Please share!

Guest Blogger Leia Shaw–Destiny Unchained (Destiny of Shadows)

Today I’m welcoming author Leia Shaw to Jenna’s Journal with her new release Destiny Unchained.

I’m Leia Shaw and I write love stories with a supernatural twist. I have three books and one short novella. Each story promises action packed adventure; a healthy dose of magic; sexy alpha males; smart, strong women; and hot, steamy romance.  My series can be read out of order as each is a stand alone, but if you’d like the correct reading order, they go like this: Destiny Divided, Destiny United, For the Love of Harmony (novella), and Destiny Unchained.

Readers can get For the Love of Harmony FREE at this link: http://www.leiashaw.com/promo.php

And they can read the first 5 chapters of Destiny Unchained here: http://www.leiashaw.com/e_read.php?samp=duc2

Blurb for Destiny Unchained:

They call her The Huntress. A vampire with lethal focus, Natalia hunts rogue werewolves and kills them without mercy. She buried her heart centuries ago. Now she lives only for revenge. But when she’s forced to team up with the alpha of the northwest werewolf pack to catch a werewolf serial killer, her carefully controlled world is shattered by the passionate Cristian

Cristian can’t help be intrigued by the icy Natalia. He hasn’t been attracted to a female since his mate died decades ago. But now he vows to break that hard shell she wears and find the warm, nurturing woman inside.

Will Natalia accept Cristian’s claim on her heart even if it means sacrificing a part of who she is?

Adult Excerpt from Destiny Unchained:

She opened her mouth to call for Cristian. But something that felt like a bus rammed into her, toppling her to the ground. For the second time, the air rushed out of her lungs and she struggled to breathe. The beast was heavy on top of her, but took care not to crush her. His powerful arms thrust hers over head, pinning her to the ground. Even with five-inch-long nails, he was careful not to hurt her. His chest heaved, blood dripped from a bite mark on his neck. With every ragged breath, a snarl escaped his throat and blew the hair from her face. When she struggled, he growled quietly in warning.

His gaze roved her over rapidly. Her eyes, her lips, her neck, down to her breasts, back to her eyes again.

She could have killed him. Probably. Maybe. But she didn’t want to kill him, she wanted to calm him. In an ultimate act of trust, she yielded. Her body sagged underneath him, her pride stinging a bit. And, in the wolf way, she turned her head and bared her throat. Male satisfaction burned in his eyes before he leaned into her neck with his nose and inhaled.

His savage moan tickled her skin. Then his body contorted. It melted on top of hers, fur disappearing, and half its mass. In only seconds, a human took its place. A naked human.

She tried to pull her arms down but he gripped them harder. “Be still, Talia,” he said, his voice husky like gravel. “Don’t move.” His face warmed the crook of her neck. “I could hear your pain from miles away. Do you know what that does to a man?” She couldn’t speak, only lay there under his heaving body. “My Natalia, hurt and afraid.”

She opened her mouth to deny that last part, but he bit her chin.

Lifting his head, he stared down at her. Calmer, more human now, but still on edge. “Don’t argue, Talia, for once. Please. I have to taste you. Do not deny me this.”

It was a command, but his eyes asked for permission. She nodded.

He pressed her wrists into the snow. “Leave them there.” In a flurry of movement she could barely process, he had her stripped from the waist down. Her lips parted and she exhaled a gasp. Bared in the middle of the snowy mountains and she stilled burned for him. His hands, one of each of her thighs, pressed down, holding them open for his gaze. His groan of approval was so animalistic she shivered all over.

She watched him through half-lidded eyes as he leaned down and blew on her clit. Her hips arched off the ground. He threw both her legs over his shoulders and held her off the snow with her ass in his hands. Her arms, obediently placed over her head, and her shoulders were the only thing touching the snow. Then he feasted on her. Nipping and sucking, licking and teasing.

Her gasps turned into cries for mercy. Her squirms turned into flails. But he held her tight and steadily went on, bringing her to the edge then slowing, over and over.

When her clit burned and throbbed and she couldn’t take anymore, she pleaded, “Cristian, please!”

One more long decadent lick then he flipped her to her hands and knees, nudging her thighs apart with his. He entered her too slowly and she pushed back into him. His soft chuckle vibrated through her body. His hand snaked forward and grabbed her breast. As he thrust in and out, he pinched and tortured her nipples, and she moaned in delight. His thrusts grew harder and his hand moved down to her swollen clit.

“Ahhh…yes!” she cried. He teased her clit lightly and her pleasure grew to an intensity she’d never experienced.

“Oh, God, Natalia. You’re perfect,” he panted, driving into her over and over. Just when she was about to climax, he leaned over her and bit into her shoulder, pinning her while he finished inside her. “Mine.”

Six Sentence Sunday–12/04 Almost Perfect

A new Six Sentence Sunday.   Welcome to both first-time visitors and to those who return each week.  Thank you for coming by and commenting.

Almost Perfect, my contemporary erotic, is scheduled for release in just five days!  I’m so excited I just had to post six more from the book this week. Hope you enjoy them!  LOL

Stranded on a desert island,  expecting her fantasy 1 Night Stand date–an Orlando Bloom-esque pirate ready to ravish her with her full permission–Pam finds instead her ex-husband.  After their conversation turns from nasty to downright rude, Roger wants to make-up and brings a bottle of water as a peace-offering.  He gets his revenge, however, by tricking Pam into showing him her breasts, then taking off for the water.

She stared as he splashed into the water and dove under, his pale, rounded butt flashing her before sliding under the waves. Her heart pounded and blood sang through her veins as it had not done in years. A deep ache bloomed between her thighs, pitifully familiar; it too had lain dormant until now. The problem was it had been so long since she’d had sex—she just knew she’d be twice as horny if that were her pirate out there.

Roger’s head broke the surface and he flipped his hair out of his face, calling “Come on in, I promise not to bite.”

“But I might,” she muttered, starting for the water, afraid they had the makings of a real live Blue Lagoon.

And don’t forget to visit the other Six Sentence Sunday snippets.  You’ll be glad you did!

Have a great Sunday!
