Sweet Saturday: 02/23/13 Betrothal ~ “Dread”

Welcome back to Sweet Saturday Sample!  All excerpts here are rated PG-13 or milder.

Here’s another sample from my medieval WIP, Time Enough to Love:  Book 1 ~ Betrothal. My editor is working hard on it, so I’m hoping for a release date sometime this spring.

Disclaimer:  This work is still going through the editing process, so please forgive any flaws.

This series is set in England and France in 1348.  Part 1, Betrothal, takes place at the court of King Edward III.

This excerpt comes just after last Sunday’s 8 sentences (If you’d like to read them, they are here.)  Thomas is rather pleased with the choice of lady and knight he is to play.  He is less happy to find that the decision of Geoffrey’s role no longer rests with Geoffrey.

“You had best recant your offer and choose someone sensible yourself.” With a final disgusted glare at his friend, Thomas hastened toward the king, going forward to accept his assigned placement in the procession.

Geoffrey stared after him, more than a little alarmed by his friend’s words. His gesture in allowing Alyse to choose their roles for the procession had simply been another attempt at chivalry, yet now that decision seemed reckless. Suddenly, he doubted her judgment and his own in allotting her the task. He heartily wished he could recall his words, no matter the delight they had inspired in her. Should he go to her and retract his offer? Geoffrey groaned at the thought. He could not go back on his word. Could he at least seek her out to find the direction of her thoughts?

Dread at the coming encounter stole through his heart as he strode from the room, leaving the courtiers still avidly discussing the coming festivities.

  1. We all have self-doubt sometimes, and it’s great to get that little slice of realism in the story. I think a lot of people can relate to this. Good work — and a great excerpt!

Thomas really sounds like a trouble-stirrer! He’s done a great job of planting doubt in Geoffrey’s head, possibly without reason.

If he’s not careful he’s going to ‘think his feet into his mouth’. Great snippet.
