A Few of My Favorite Christmas Things

Christmas is a time full of favorites:  traditions, songs, movies, candy, cookies, food, books.  The list goes on.  I thought for my Christmas post I’d share my Christmas favorites with you.

My favorite Christmas tradition is putting up a live Christmas tree each year.  Yep, no artificial tree for us.  Even though this year we’re going away for Christmas and not putting up a tree (for the first time ever), my husband bought a little live tree just so we’d have one.  This is the live tree from Christmas Vacation, a very big, very live tree. 🙂

Speaking of Christmas Vacation, that movie is on my top 5 list of favorite Christmas movies.  The list starts with a little known Christmas tale at no. 5.

5.  A Child’s Christmas in Wales— Beautiful little movie, based on the Dylan Thomas poem. Very nostalgic, which works well this time of the year.

4.  Christmas Vacation–just the funniest Christmas movie around.  The holidays with the Griswalds always brings a smile to my lips.  Break out the dry turkey and let’s watch it again.  This is my favorite scene, due to the placement of Beverly D’Angelo’s hand!

3.  How the Grinch Stole Christmas–classic that can still bring tears to my eyes.  I adore Max!  And my daughter has always reminded me of Cindy Lou Who.  Da Who Dores to all of you!

2.  White Christmas–another classic musical that will warm the cockles of your heart.  Bing Crosby singing White Christmas at the end with all the snow coming down–it doesn’t get much more Christmasy than this.

1.  My quirky no. one favorite Christmas movie is  Scrooge, a musical starring Albert Finney as Scrooge.  Wonderful songs, wonderful sets and costumes (Victorian London comes alive).  And the scene where Scrooge goes to Hell is my favorite.

My Christmas just isn’t right if I don’t hear Elvis singing “Santa Bring My Baby Back.”  I have to eat ham biscuits under the tree Christmas morning, followed by oyster stew.  I love rum balls (made with gluten-fee ingredients) and homemade fudge from my grandmother’s recipe.

And my favorite book set during Christmas is Jo Beverley’s Winter Fire, whose food fight is the most fun anyone should have had during the 18th century!

I’m signing off the blog for the holiday.  Going to celebrate with my family in a new location, making new traditions and keeping old ones.

May your holidays be filled with the wonder of a new beginning.

“Merry Christmas to all, and to all a good night!”

  1. It’s cold here, the frost in the morning provides our winter white. We have an artificial tree. It’s old, only half the lights on it work. We also have the lighted lawn deer and tree up outside but with our solid wood fence, only we can see it. Christmas started slow for us this year and is quickly building momentum. Due largly in part to blog posts such as yours, my Merry mood is emerging. We watch The Polar Express, and Rudolph, of course. But this year is special, I have so many new author friends to share the Joy of the Season. And you, Jenna, are one of them. Merry Christmas and happy new year to you and your family!

Merry Christmas jenna – will be cold at the Cape.

Our tradition is the annual Vinyl Cafe concert http://www.cbc.ca/vinylcafe/home.php

Hard to describe – but when people leave everyone feels the love

this year the youngest audence member was 10 days old (don’t know why the woman brought the baby) and we had someone 100 years old. The give prizes for the youngest and oldest and tell stories and we listen to music – so hard to describe – but is the essense of christmas spirit

  5. Wishing you and yours all the best through the holidays, Jenna. The end-of-year festivities just wouldn’t be the same without good friends and family, no matter the size of your tree. 🙂

Exactly, Patricia. They do say the size doesn’t matter, it’s what you do with it. LOL I think that’s true of Christmas trees as well. We will have a happy Christmas with our little tree–if we can ever get packed and leave!

Here’s hoping your holidays are bright and your new year a wonderful beginning!

I dislike live trees because I hate the killing of them…such a waste. But my favorite thing about Christmas is when my daughter and I string lights all over the farm. It’s so much fun to turn them on. You can see them for over a mile away, and coming home to the pretty lights really cheers me.

  7. Merry Christmas to you and your family. Love rum balls. My son and I used to make them every year, but we have very good rum balls here in St Thomas.

We also put up a live tree–I love the smell. It brings back so many memories from when I was a child.
I wish you and your family a very Merry Christmas and a happy, healthy New Year!

This is the first year we’ll have an artificial one (small table-top model) but the tree is always a big deal at our house ever since I was little.
Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year to you and your family as well! Have a fantastic holiday!
