Weekend Writing Warriors ~ 04/23/17 Heart of Delight ~ A Lady’s Maid

weekend_writing_warriors_header3

I’m staying with my Handful of Hearts novella Heart of Delight, again this week for WWW.

I thought today I’d skip ahead a little after they meet–and kiss–to Hal’s thoughts after their encounter.  (Creative punctuation utilized to conform to WWW rules.)

A Lady and Her Maid

And the moment he’d seen Miss d’Aventure, he’d decided he must meet the lovely creature, have one conversation without the ton dictating his behavior—have her meet the man, rather than the blasted title so many women sought. He hadn’t imagined he’d want to continue the acquaintance, yet now he could not countenance the idea of not seeing her again. Unfortunately, neither could he reveal himself without making her angry about his deception. She’d find out eventually, of course. No one who knew him would ever mistake him for his valet, the real Horace Carpenter, still he wanted to give them time to know each other as equals.

He liked Mademoiselle d’Aventure on a level much deeper than he’d have thought possible in the fifteen minutes they’d been together. Smart, funny, beautiful, stubborn—that he liked most of all. He’d wager his inheritance she could hold her own in any drawing room in London; that she could be his marchioness had crossed his mind more than once. Their kiss and her lovely figure pressed close to him had incited a riot in every part of his body.

If only she were not a lady’s maid.

BLURB:

He’ll do anything to be her heart’s delight—except tell the truth.

Gabriella d’Adventure is on a mission. She has come to England as a lady’s maid in pursuit of the Duke of Rother. When she meets Horace Carpenter, valet to a marquess, she is delighted to enlist his aid in gaining her heart’s desire: a meeting with the duke. But will her growing feelings for the handsome valet interfere with her plans for the duke?

The eccentric Marquess of Halford, Hal to his friends, is tired of the demands of Society, especially his father’s decree that he marry this Season. When a breathtaking young woman intrudes on his solitude, he is captivated and introduces himself as his valet in hopes of learning more about her. Despite his fear about the true motive behind Gabriella’s quest to meet the Duke of Rother, Hal agrees to help her gain an audience with him, all the while praying his deception won’t ruin his chances of winning her love.

The Romance of Language: Word for the Week 4/21/17

Buzznacking:

“Gossiping from place to place.

–Francis Robinson’s Words Used in the Neighborhood of Whitby [Yorkshire], 1876

“Calletting, saucy gossiping.

–John Brockett’s Glossary of North Country Words, 1825

Sharing some gossip over a cup of scandal broth was a great way to pass the day in the Regency (or Georgian or Victorian eras).

Be My Guest! ~ Author Interview with Marie Higgins

banner-memeHello, and welcome to my new feature for 2017.

I’ve begun a Wednesday weekly post to present interviews with authors across all romance genres. Although I’m primarily an historical romance writer, I do read outside my genre and suspect a lot of you do as well. And what’s more fascinating than finding out more about either your favorite authors or new ones? I plan to change up my questions (most of them at least) every three months or so, just to keep the interviews lively.

So now gather round the tea table, grab a scone or cookies, and a cup of tea or coffee and discover a new friend in the writing world.

This week on Be My Guest, as promised, I am interviewing historical author Marie Higgins! We are currently sharing  an  historical romance boxed set, Her Perfect Gentleman, along with last week’s guest, Elf Ahearn and five other lovely ladies, so I thought I’d take this opportunity to introduce you to Marie, who I’ve known for years, and let her tell you about herself and her historical novella, The Sweetest Challenge.

Author Bio :

Marie Higgins is a multi-published author of romance; from refined bad-boy heroes who makes your heart melt to the feisty heroines who somehow manage to love them regardless of their faults. Visit her website / blog to discover more about her – http://mariehiggins.com

And now let’s meet Marie Higgins!

Who was the first romance author and book you read?

Kathleen E Woodiwiss / A Rose in Winter was my first romance novel. I was completely glued to the story, and I read all hours of the night. I couldn’t get enough of historical romance novels after that. Judith McNaught, LaVryle Spencer, and Jude Deveraux were also some of my favorite authors.

Are you a pantser or plotter? What is your process?

I’m totally a panster! I tried a few times to plot out my stories, but because I knew what was going to happen and how the stories would end, it took me forever to finish them. From that point on, I decided panster was the life for me. I enjoy feeling the rush of excitement when there’s a new twist in the story, and I definitely cherish the heart-melting moment when my characters realize they are in love.

Which of your own books is your favorite and why?

This is such a hard question, only because I have written / published 43 books. I love each story for different reasons. If I had to choose, however, I think I’d pick “Take My Heart”, my historical romance. I worked on that story for so many years and tried to make it my best work. The twists and turns in that plot surprised even me, and of course, the love story is to DIE for.

If you could have one wish granted just for you (not world peace, LOL), what would you wish for?

Darn! I was going to say World Peace. lol So I’ll go with my second favorite wish. Although I’ve been writing for about 20 years, I’ve never been with a big publisher. So my wish would be to not only find a big publisher, but that my stories get me to New York Times Bestselling Author! I’m not asking for much, am I?

What is the first thing you do when you get a story idea?

When I get a story idea, I make sure both my hero and heroine have goals, motivation, and conflict (along with my villain). Once I’ve figured that out, I find names and identities for them. Then I’ll figure out what era will be best for the plot. Once all of that is done…I start my first chapter. I usually don’t know my twists until the characters give me an idea of what they want…then I make sure they can’t get it for a while.

Now, tell us a little bit about one of your books.

What was your inspiration for this story?

The inspiration for “The Sweetest Challenge” actually came from a contemporary story I had started to write many years ago, but had never finished. I have a Regency Romance series that needed another story added to the line-up, and so I went back through my unfinished stories to get some ideas. When I ran across a woman who worked in a car shop, immediately, I thought of a woman trying to work as a blacksmith in the Regency era. DING! Then the rest of the story flew from my fingers. I love when that happens.

I am a fanatic about my character names. Are the character names special in any way?

I have to find the right names for my characters as well. For some reason, I’m in love with the man’s name, Nick/Nicholas. Don’t know why. But I just can’t name all of her heroes that. As for the heroine…I don’t have a favorite. I have a spreadsheet with a list of historical names, and I read through them until one stands out. That’s how I pick my heroine’s name.

How long did it take you to write this book?

As I’d mentioned previously, the idea had been created several years ago. Who knew it was supposed to be a historical and not a contemporary? lol  Usually, it only takes about six weeks to write a novel.

Now, the Infamous Lightning Round:

Tea or coffee and how do you take it?

None. I like water or lemonade. Crazy, I know…

 Hot dogs or Hamburgers?

Hamburgers

 Favorite all time movie?

I have too many favorites, but maybe Princess Bride.

 Chocolate or vanilla?

Chocolate – with nuts!

 Cat person or dog person?

DOG!

BLURB:

Melinda Stewart was far from being a debutante, but she must disguise what she really did during the day to keep food on the table. When a wealthy businessman enters her life and wants to buy her land, she’s torn between giving up her deceased father’s dream—and wanting to give her heart to this stranger.

Morgan Drake doesn’t take no for an answer, but ever since meeting the very lovely Miss Stewart, all of his business ethics have been pushed aside. Now, the lonely man who never had time for a wife, wants to change, and he wants Miss Stewart to be the woman beside him. If only he can convince her that he’s not the terrible person she believes him to be.

The Sweetest Challenge is on Amazon and other etailers!

EXCERPT:

The man jumped and spun around toward Morgan, still holding onto the hammer. The man straightened, and Morgan was surprised to see how small Mr. Stewart really was. The man’s head touched the top of Morgan’s shoulders. Then again, it didn’t matter his height, as long as he was strong and could handle the tasks given to him in order to keep his blacksmith’s shop in business.

There was a clear object hanging from the man’s helmet, shielding his face, but Morgan could still see the man’s expression. Mr. Stewart’s mouth hung open and his eyes widened. He could also tell that the man was younger than Morgan had first assumed.

Had they met before? By Mr. Stewart’s surprised expression, it certainly seemed like the man knew him.

“Pardon me for interrupting,” Morgan began. “My name is Mr. Drake, and I’m with Drake Land Developers. If you don’t mind, I would like to discuss the offer my company made you a few months ago.”

Suddenly, the surprised expression on the other man changed, and his gaze narrowed on Morgan. The man threw down the hammer and stomped past him.

Morgan held in his frustration the best he could. “Mr. Stewart, I thought we could discuss this matter like two reasonable men.”

“Then you thought wrong.” The man’s voice croaked in a lower tone.

Morgan held back the angry words he really wanted to say. “Mr. Stewart, I’ve come to offer you a better deal.”

Once again, Mr. Stewart spun around and faced him. Through the clear shield over his face, Morgan noticed how red the man’s cheeks were.

He waited for the man to say something, but so far not a word came from him. The sun shone through the window, gleaming on Mr. Stewart’s face…his very young face. Perhaps he wasn’t the owner after all. Morgan should ask to see if the elder Mr. Stewart was around.

“Are you Mr. Mel Stewart, the owner?”

Mr. Stewart yanked off his gloves and threw them on the counter. Surprisingly, the man’s hands were small. And then he flipped up the clear shield from his face. In one swipe, the man had removed the helmet looking covering. But then something else caught his eyes. The man’s wavy, blond hair floated from the helmet to cascade down the man’s neck to his shoulders, and partly over his face. And yet…now it didn’t look like the face of a man, but a woman, instead.

With petite fingers, she swept her hair away from her eyes. Something familiar tugged at Morgan’s memory. The shape of her face was delicate, as well as her chin, and especially her mouth. Last night’s images of dancing with Melinda rushed to his mind, and he couldn’t shake the feeling that he had found the woman who had intrigued him, and then disappeared abruptly.

Yet, this couldn’t be her. Where was the lovely, very desirable woman he’d danced with and held so intimately? And why was she wearing men’s clothes?

She lifted her chin and straightened her shoulders. “I’m Miss Melinda Stewart, not Mister.”

Medieval Monday ~ Villains ~Week #11 Rue Allyn’s Knight Errant

MedMon

Villains!

is our theme for this round of Medieval Monday!

Join us and discover some of the most evil and dastardly villains our medieval romances ever produced! And we are doing something a bit different this time around. We’re breaking our excerpts up into tantalizing little bites–only 8 to 10 sentences each week. So you’ll need to keep up to get the whole excerpt. We let you know each week whose blog we’ll be at the week so you can keep up with each Medieval Monday author’s work the same way.

This week’s excerpt is from Rue Allyn’s

Knight Errant

Excerpt:

This week we pick up the story in our hero, Robert’s, point of view.

Robert ran up the inn stairs late that afternoon. He had the horses. His safe conducts had been recognized, and more money rode in a pouch within the leather of his jerkin, just above his belt. Best of all he knew where Basti was. ’Twas very good news he had for Juliana.

They could leave the port now, tonight, much sooner than expected.

Basti was leaving today, too, for Rome and a heresy trial that would begin several weeks hence in Rome. The magistrate’s secretary had rejoiced because in the month or so while Basti resided in the port, the whores had all gone into hiding due to the priest’s vengeance in Verona.

“You do not know the story?” The man had been all too happy to relay the details. “That cursed Basti hates women so much, he rounded up all the whores there, took them to the square, and had them mutilataed while he watched.”

With a little hard riding, the two of them could pass through Rome while Basti’s attention was on the trial, then escape over the mountains and be far from the priest’s reach.

Weekend Writing Warriors ~ 04/16/17 Heart of Delight ~ A Delightful Vision

weekend_writing_warriors_header3

I’m changing books today to my Handful of Hearts novella Heart of Delight, which is currently up for the InD’tale Creme de la Cover award! 🙂

I thought I’d begin with the “cute meet,” at a ball but not on the ballroom floor. Hal, the Marquess of Halford, has been hiding out from all the matchmaking mama in the private balcony  overlooking the ballroom when his solitude is interrupted.

Hal smiled, moved back to his spot in front of the balcony rail, and settled on the floor once more. Best steel himself to go down and do his duty by all the young ladies. When had his life become so filled with obligation?

“Ah.”

Hal shook his head. “What have you forgott—” He twisted his head toward the doorway and froze.

The young lady who stood before him was definitely not Lady Celinda Graham. Medium height, with golden brown hair, a face fresh as cream, and perfectly bowed lips, she would have been exceptional even without the startling glass-green eyes. Dressed in an unremarkable dull brown dress, she could not be one of Lady Hamilton’s guests, although, with her beauty, she certainly should have been.

As I said earlier, the Heart of Delight cover is currently in a contest at InD’Tale. If you can, would you please vote for it? It’s currently in 2nd place with 15 votes. If you could spare a minute to vote, I’d truly appreciate it! Here’s the link to the Creme de la Cover Contest.  (You do have to be logged in to InD’Tale to vote.)

Thank you all so much!

Be My Guest! ~ Author Interview with Elf Ahearn

banner-memeHello, and welcome to my new feature for 2017.

This week on Be My Guest, as promised, I am interviewing historical author Elf Ahearn! We are currently sharing  an  historical romance boxed set, Her Perfect Gentleman, so I thought I’d take this opportunity to introduce you to Elf–her real name and I love it!–and let her tell you about herself and her historical novella, His Lordship’s Darkest Secret.

Author Bio :

Elf Ahearn, yes, that is her real name, lives in New York with her wonderful husband and a pesky (yet irresistible) cat. Before becoming a novelist, she spent 20 years in Manhattan working as an actress in nearly 100 productions (yet rarely being paid for any of them). From that lucrative career, she jumped to journalism, and then to corporate communications where she garnered multiple awards for a newsletter she wrote and edited. Her novel, A Rogue in Sheep’s Clothing hit #1 in its genre on Amazon this September, and bless its heart, has been consistently selling for over three years.

Website: www.elfahearn.com

Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/elf.ahearn?fref=ts

Newsletter: email elfahearn@hotmail.com to subscribe

And now let’s meet Elf Ahearn!

Who is your favorite romance hero or heroine and why? What qualities do they possess that make them memorable?

I know this will sound odd as heck, since I’m not into gay romance, but there’s a male-on-male author from England named K.J. Charles who is brilliant. In her book An Unseen Attraction, there’s a character name Clem Talleyfer, who grows clumsy when he’s being pressured or jostled by people. His personality is so beautifully drawn, I could have spent another 1,000 pages with him.

Hero worship knows no bounds, Elf. He sounds fantastic!

Who was the first romance author and book you read?

I wish I could remember the title, but it was by Sabrina Jeffries, and it was the sexiest work of literature I’d ever laid eyes on. Needless to say, I couldn’t put it down. The book that really pushed me on my writing path, however, was M.M. Kaye’s The Far Pavilions. I knew when I read that novel, I wanted to create stuff that had that same sense of adventure, and characters pushed against impossible odds who would sacrifice everything for love. Only the romance genre will let you do that.

OMG, I love M.M. Kaye! I love The Far Pavillions, but I really think I love In the Shadow of the Moon even more. Her books put a trip to India on my bucket list.

Are you a pantser or plotter? What is your process?

I’m kinda both a pantser and a plotter. Since I always know my ending, I draft a loose outline with a few scenes I think will take me where I want to go. However, my characters inevitably march over that outline, trampling the poor thing to pulp. That’s okay, as long as I can persuade them to come home and make nice with my climax and denouement.

You’re a better writer than I am, Gunga Din. I have to have a detailed outline or I can’t start to write at all!

What is your favorite holiday and why?

Christmas is my all-time fav, which stands to reason since my name is Elf. BTW, I swear that came straight from my parents’ imaginations.

What I adore about Christmas, though, is that everyone is thinking about someone other than themselves. Even if coming up with a gift for Aunt Betty is a hassle, and a drag, and something to drag oneself into kicking and screaming, Aunt Betty is still taking up brain cells. To me, more than Santa Claus or even the birth of Jesus, that’s the miracle of Christmas.

What is the most exciting/daredevil thing you’ve ever done?

I went to Europe alone. It was shortly after I graduated from college—pre-internet days, mind you. The trip was pure daredevil, but I got lonely fast and wished I’d had someone with me. For example, on one of my last nights, I missed the train out of London and had to book a room. This woman at the accommodations desk told me the only hotel available in the entire city was the youth hostel I’d stayed in the entire week. Then they didn’t have a single, so I ended up paying an astronomical amount for a room with 10 beds in it. Had someone been with me, they might have shouted, “No Elf, don’t do it!”

We must get together and chat about our experiences. I had a similar one when I was a senior in college!

Do you have any hobbies/passions outside of writing?

Watching TV. Wait—is that considered a hobby?

I do, unless you can find a way to turn it into a profession.

What is your favorite cuisine?

Food that someone else cooked…

A woman after my own heart. 🙂

Now, tell us a little bit about one of your books.

What was your inspiration for this story?

Just after my wedding, I discovered that during the reception, which we held at the house, someone stole my silver jewelry. Not the expensive gold stuff, just the silver, and only the pieces I wore frequently. A few years later, I figured out that the thief was my best friend—one of my bride’s maids. And that’s when the story came to me. The evil side of the villainess in His Lordship’s Darkest Secret is based on that friend. The hoarding side came from my sister.

When my father died, my sister kind of lost it, taking everything we didn’t sell from a huge house and stuffing it in and around her tiny house. It was so bad you couldn’t see the front door, and there were plastic tarps all over the property under which furniture, books, sofa cushions, and valuable artwork moldered together and rotted.

I have a photograph of the interior of the house. You literally can’t tell up or down except for a single mask hanging on the wall.

First-hand experience—that’s what inspired this novel.

Wow, I’d say!

I am a fanatic about my character names. Are the character names special in any way?

Another sister, the one who told me I should write romance, had a much-loved kitty named Flavian. He walked like a truck driver, and mewed like a pansy. The hero in His Lordship’s Darkest Secret is named after him. Hopefully, he’s a little more alpha than the cat, though.

LOL!

Now, the Infamous Lightning Round: (Choose 5-6 of the questions below)

What is your favorite amusement park ride?

Rollercoaster. Hate the Ferris Wheel, though. Scares me to death.

Tea or coffee and how do you take it?

Tea! The first cup of the day has soy milk, the second cup is black.

Hot dogs or Hamburgers?

I eat more hamburgers, but I do love a good dog every once in a while.

Favorite all time movie?

The Producers. As a former actor, I can’t get enough of that film. Shakespeare in Love is another one that turns my crank.

That is a hoot!

Chocolate or vanilla?

So easy, it’s almost shocking you ask, Jenna. Chocolate, naturally.

I never meant to shock you, Elf!

Boxers, briefs or commando? (preferred for your heroes)

Since the gentlemen who occupy my pages, are, as I said, gentlemen, and since none of them has made it out of the 19th Century, I’m going to say boxers.

How many states have you lived in?

Three. I’m a pretty sedentary creature.

Would you rather skydive or scuba dive?

Way rather scuba dive. Swimming is my bag, baby.

Cat person or dog person?

Cats, cats, cats! But I do love dogs too. Sufie, the kitty of my heart, is asthmatic, so we can’t have a dog because it would upset her delicate equilibrium. Someday, though, I’ll have a dog.

I’m a cat person too. There’s something purrfect about them. 🙂

What’s the one thing you would never do?

Steal my best friend’s jewelry…

ROFLMAO!

What’s your favorite Starbucks drink?

I was going to say iced coffee, but I have to admit, I love those cold frappuchinos. OMG, are those things addictive!

Who is your favorite cartoon character?

Bugs Bunny.

Here’s the blurb for His Lordship’s Darkest Secret, which you can find in the boxed set, Her Perfect Gentleman  on Amazon, B & N, and other etailers!

BLURB:

If Lady Claire Albright had one wish, it would be to forget brooding, powerful Lord Flavian Monroe. But even after two years of bewildering silence, she yearns to touch his sinuous arms and feel his calloused hands upon her cheeks. Then, on the brink of her come out, they accidently meet. His ward is ill, and he begs her to use her knowledge of healing to help the girl. But this patient is sick in a way that’s far different from what Claire expected—dangerously different. And, as she struggles to find a cure, Flavian resists rekindling their love. Is it the ward’s illness that keeps him cold and distant, or a dark and terrible secret?

The thought of Claire in the arms of another man is unbearable, but in his heart, Flavian knows he mustn’t ask her to share the consequences of his mistake. Nor should he have brought her to his home and exposed her to his ward’s sickness. Yet he lacks the strength to send her away. Each time he looks into the blue pools of Claire’s eyes, the urge to feel her body pressed against his consumes all reason, and he is left unable to utter the word, “Goodbye.”

Medieval Monday ~ Villains ~Week #10 Lane McFarland’s Lindsey

This week’s excerpt is from Lane McFarland’s

Lindsey

Excerpt:

Several men rushed from the huddled group to aid their fallen companions. Lindsey hurried to the first man and knelt beside him. She pushed his hair to the side and grimaced.

Logan.

Cora’s little bandits were correct.

His swollen face was blackened, and blood caked the back of his head. “Logan, can ye hear me? It’s Lindsey.”

His eyes fluttered. Moans of the injured men wafted around her. She jerked the basket to her side and brought out a flask of water, a soft cloth, and a jar of salve. “Look in my basket for more water skins,” she called over her shoulder to the other prisoners.

Logan’s friends, Adam, Thom, and Colyne lay unmoving. Dark dried blood and dirt smeared the men’s swollen, beaten faces. Their listless bodies attested to abuse and neglect.

Who said life was fair? Certainly not Lindsey MacDougall. She rebels at a world dominated by men. Dressed in lad’s clothing, she manages her father’s stables, caring for, breeding and selling horses. Unwavering on performing her duty to the rebellion, Lindsey throws caution to the wind and secretly delivers missives behind enemy lines to the Scottish warriors.

Logan Ross uses his happy-go-lucky smile to warm the hearts of many willing lasses, but it also masks his pain—the pain of his birth. As a bastard son, he is unacceptable for any Laird’s daughter, including the spirited Lindsey MacDougall. However, she haunts his dreams. Determined to prove his worth, he throws himself into the middle of the rebellion, leading men into mortal danger.

After helping Logan escape from a brutal English dungeon, Lindsey fights her traitorous attraction to the virile highland warrior, vowing never to lose her heart to any man.

Only A Mistress Will Do has released!

I thought I’d post one more tidbit before moving on to another WIP. Enjoy!

Here is the link to the previous post if you want to catch up.

Miss Violet Carlton is a woman facing a horrifying decision: become a prostitute in order to live or retain respectability and starve. Madame Vestry, owner of the House of Pleasure, has agreed to see Violet. To evaluate her as a prospective employee, Madame Vestry insists on an inspection to confirm Violet’s virgin state.  And having been satisfied of it, she arranges for Violet to entertain her first customer.

In this snippet, Violet has accepted Lord Trevor’s assistance and is being sheltered in the house where he kept his former mistress. The next morning they are having breakfast together when a familiar topic arises. They are discussing Violet’s maid when the scene opens.

(Creative punctuation used to conform to the WWW rules.)

“That is most kind of you, however, why did you tell her I am your mistress?” Violet forced herself to remain calm. Lord Trevor seemed to trust the maid to remain silent, so she must as well.

He shrugged and sipped his coffee again, saying, “I told her only that I wished to employ her services again, immediately, for a guest at Lammas House. She assumed our relationship based on past occupants.”

“Then you don’t intend to make me your mistress, Lord Trevor?” Her voice came out harder than she had intended, but she was coiled like a spring inside.

“Would you like to be, Miss Carlton?”

Her throat closed as if she’d swallowed a peach pit; worse, her entire face flamed.

He eyed her coolly and said, “I believe we covered that subject last night, however, if you have reconsidered, I’d be delighted to discuss the terms.”

BLURB:

The man of her dreams…belongs to another woman.

Destitute and without friends, Violet Carlton is forced to seek employment at the House of Pleasure in London. She steels herself for her first customer and is shocked when the man rescues her instead of ravishing her. A grateful Violet cannot help but admire the handsome Viscount Trevor. But she must curb her desire for the dashing nobleman she can never have because he is already betrothed to another . . .

Tristan had gone to the House of Pleasure for a last bit of fun before he became a faithful married man. But when he recognizes the woman in his bed, he becomes determined to save her instead. Now, his heart wars with his head as he falls for the vulnerable courtesan. Unable to break his betrothal without a scandal, Tris resolves to find Violet proper employment or a husband of her own. Still, his arms ache for Violet, urging him to abandon propriety and sacrifice everything to be with the woman he loves. . . .
