Medieval Monday: First Encounter! ~ Elisabeth Hobbes’ Redeeming the Rogue Knight

MedMon

First Meet!

is our theme for this round of Medieval Monday!

Join us, our heroes and heroines and as we see that crucial first encounter with a couple meant to be together.

This week’s excerpt is from

Elisabeth Hobbes’

Redeeming the Rogue Knight

Excerpt:

She clutched the poker firmly in her hand and retreated to the bottom of the staircase.

The man she had taken for a drunk now raised his head, which had been lolling to one side. He gave a wolfish grin beneath his thick beard, but it was his eyes that transfixed Lucy. Brown as walnuts and studying her with such intensity that a sensation stirred inside her she had not felt in longer than she could remember. She felt a blush begin deep between her breasts that was only prevented from spreading by the dawning realisation that her admirer’s gaze was so intense because he was struggling to focus.

Blurb:

The spy who sought refuge…

When injured spy Sir Roger Danby comes asking for shelter at her inn, Lucy Carew is wary. He may be strikingly handsome, but the disgraced single mother has learnt the hard way with men like him. Against her better judgement, she gives him refuge.

Sir Roger has never been at the mercy of a woman before, and he’s never met one as mysterious and bewitching as Lucy. He hasn’t come looking for redemption, but Lucy is a woman who could reach in and touch his closely guarded heart…

Weekend Writing Warriors ~ 8/06/17 Heart of Desire: An Unexpected Acceptance

weekend_writing_warriors_header3

I’m back! Last weekend I was driving home from RWA National Convention in Orlando–super time but no time for anything but the conference. This past week I was in the writing cave at my aunt’s house for four days. Much closer to being finished with Book 4 of the House of Pleasure series, but still working day and night to meet my deadline.

Still, I wanted to come back to Weekend Writing Warriors and share one of the Regency romances  in my series Handful of Hearts. This snippet comes from Book 2, Heart of Desire. I was sharing snippets from it almost this time last year, after it released, so I’m starting with the snippet I posted then and will go forward for several weeks with this one.

Heart of Desire Final

The time is the beginning of the Season in London, May 5, 1820. Miss Katherine Locke is waltzing with Lord Haversham at Lady Hamilton’s ball. Lord Haversham and Miss Locke are the Regency equivalent of Kate and Petruchio, Beatrice and Benedict all rolled into one. Kate’s brother has goaded Haversham into asking Kate to dance the night following a spirited exchange at Lady Hamilton’s ball.

Hope you enjoy!

couple 2“Thank you for that kind offer, Lord Haversham.” She fluttered her fan over her face, revealing nothing. “I am not engaged at the moment, so yes, I will be happy to accept you,” she said as she smiled and curtsied, for all the world as though she meant it.

Words failed him although he managed a bow and grabbed his friend’s arm, hauling him away from Miss Locke’s disturbing presence. “What did you say to her?” he demanded as soon as they were out of earshot.

“Why? Has she trampled your efforts before they are even born?” Ainsley’s frown—without a hint of mirth around the eyes—convinced Marcus his friend spoke the truth.

“She accepted me.”

Ainsley slowly cocked his head as he asked, “Isn’t that the desired outcome of an invitation to dance?”

Blurb:

Follow your heart to find your desire

Miss Katherine Locke is irked to start her 3rd season dancing with the disagreeable Lord Haversham, her brother’s friend and her own arch enemy. After three years out, however, she’s finally interested in the dashing Lord Finley—only to find out her cousin has set her cap for him too. To make the man jealous, Kate feigns interest in Lord Haversham, only to be shocked to find herself falling for the handsome lord against her will.

Marcus, Lord Haversham, is in a tight pinch. His estates are failing and worse, he’s just lost 3,000 pounds to his best friend, Lord Ainsley. Ainsley’s solution: have Marcus marry his shrewish sister and he’ll cancel his gambling debt plus give him 10, 000 more for her dowry. With nowhere to turn, Marcus agrees, praying he can keep word of the wager from Kate until he can woo her and charm her into marrying him.

And don’t forget to check out the rest of the Warriors here.  There’s some fantastic snippets to be read.

All three of my Regency romance novellas are available in Handful of Hearts, Volume 1 on Amazon for just .99! Includes Heart of Desire, Heart of Delight, and Hearts beneath the Mistletoe.

Liza O’Connor’s Toxic Diamonds

Baby Farmers were usually women (or a couple) who, for a monthly fee, would care for your baby. (In the late Victorian Era, London was full of women needing work at various factories. Many baby farmers failed to feed or would simply drowned the babies. There were several notorious baby farmers who killed babies: Amelia Dyer is believed to have killed over 400 babies. The exact numbers of babies who died by these women was rarely certain.

In my story, when Vic is trying to train Scotland Yard officers to be more intuitive, she realizes one of the officers has been flirting with a baby farmer. When Captain Meyers and the officer check out the young lady’s home they discover five babies dead in the crib.

Sixteen other babies are returned to their mothers. Oddly, the one baby that someone paid to have killed remained alive, more than likely to blackmail the gentleman who brought the child to her.

Vic decides instead of sending the baby boy to an orphanage where it would likely die in a month, she would give it to her brother in law. Claire never lets David hold their baby girl.  David needs a little boy to teach him wisdom and share his love.

Determining who to trust is getting very hard, indeed. This may be the most trying cases imaginable. Director Stone has gone missing and it appears Ministers of Parliament are involved. Xavier is arrested and placed in a jail meant to kill him, while Vic, disguised as a woman, attempts to locate the Minister of External Affairs and ask for his help.

Everyone is called in to assist: Jacko, his wife Alice, their son Pete, Samson the Crime Lord, David and Claire, Tubs and his wife Sara, the boys: Cannon and Ham, plus the bloodhound Arroo.

The Wasp who escaped punishment for her attempts to murder her bigamist husband’s first wife last year is back. Vic discovers love letters between Ben, their terrible secretary and the Wasp. Worse yet, he shared Xavier’s financial advice with the Wasp, making her and her husband very wealthy.

With Stone missing, and Barns and Meyers stretched to their limits, Vic decides it’s time to train more of the Scotland Yard officers in intuitive and deductive reasoning. While only half the class makes it through her two-day course, everyone is pleased with her results.

Be warned, Vic’s sister, Claire, is becoming more difficult than ever. Gregory thinks she is going mad.

His sad demeanor warned her the news would break her heart. “She was murdering the babies,” Vic stated as tears ran down her cheeks.

“Yes. There were five dead in the cribs. Dr. Connors said they either died of starvation or poison—they showed signs of both—so he’s claiming both to be the cause of death. I brought in more men to dig up the backyard and they found seven more bodies before I left. I expect there’ll be more.”

“How old was this woman?” Vic asked.

“She is only twenty with a demeanor of kindness and charm.”

“It’s how she convinces the poor women to hand over their babies to her care,” Vic replied. “But she couldn’t have been baby farming for long. Does Cotter know how long she’s lived there?”

“She moved in five months ago.”

“Are the bodies in the back yard just bones?”

“Some are, some aren’t,” Meyers replied softly.

“So, she bought the business from someone else.”

“She swears she didn’t know about the bones in the backyard. She sounded completely sincere, but two of the graves were freshly dug, probably in the last week, so she’s just good at lying.”

Vic nodded with his conclusion. “It’s a skill a baby farmer must have. Most women do not want to kill their babies. But they either cannot afford to feed them or they must work long days and cannot care for their own child. A baby farmer must be able to convince a woman, for a small amount of money each week to pay for the child’s keep, she will love the baby like her own.”

“That no doubt explains why she had so many babies.”

“Were any still alive?”

“Seventeen of them.”

“Does she have paperwork as to whom they belong to?”

“She does on sixteen of them. The mothers had to work, so they left their babies with her for eight pounds a month. The little boy was to be killed, but she hadn’t gotten around to it.”

Liza O’Connor was raised badly by feral cats, left the South/Midwest and wandered off to find nicer people on the east coast. There she worked for the meanest man on Wall Street, while her psychotic husband tried to kill her three times. (So much for finding nicer people.) Then one day she declared enough, got a better job, divorced her husband, and fell in love with her new life where people behaved nicely. But all those bad behaviors has given her lots of fodder for her humorous books. Please buy these books, because otherwise, she’ll become grumpy and write troubled novels instead. They will likely traumatize you.

You have been warned.

The Adventures of Xavier & Vic Sleuth series: (Late Victorian/Mystery/Romance)

The Troublesome Apprentice — The greatest sleuth in Victorian England hires a young man who turns out to be a young woman.

The Missing Partner — Opps! The greatest sleuth in Victorian England goes missing, leaving Vic to rescue him, a suffragette, and about 100 servants. Not to mention an eviscerating cat. Yes, let’s not mention the cat.

A Right to Love — A romantic detour for Jacko. Want to see how amply rewarded Jacko was when he & Vic save an old woman from Bedlam?

The Mesmerist The Mesmerist can control people from afar and make them murder for her. Worse yet, Xavier Thorn has fallen under her spell.

Well Kept Secrets — The problems with secrets is that they always come to light, no matter how you wish to silence them.

Pack of Trouble — Changes are a part of life, but these changes almost kill Vic.

The Darkest Days — Muddled cases make Vic very grumpy.

The CrimeLords’ War — Vic is almost killed twice as she tries to prevent a CrimeLords’ War, stop a female Russian spy, and locate Xavier.

Toxic Diamonds The Queen’s Diamonds have been stolen, Director Stone of Scotland Yard is missing, and there is a toxic gas that may kill hundreds of Londoners.

Weekend Writing Warriors ~ 07/23/17 Only A Mistress Will Do ~ A Damnable Mess

weekend_writing_warriors_header3

I’m back with more of Only A Mistress Will Do. It’s still on sale for .99! If you want it at that bargain price, here’s the Amazon link!

onlyamistresswilldo

Next Sunday I’ll be on my way home from RWA Nationals–my how time flies. So I won’t be on Weekend Writing Warriors that week. The following week I’ll be up at my cabin in the woods of upstate New York, but I should have my cell phone data, so I’ll have a new book for you in August.

In this snippet, I’m giving you the end of the scene from the last few weeks between Tristan and Dora, the young woman he is betrothed to. It’s an arranged marriage so Tris can gain a valuable piece of property. He and Dora have met only a couple of times and danced perhaps twice. Tris has just kissed Dora, her very first kiss, and she has happily run out of the room.

(Creative punctuation used to conform to the WWW rules. The published text may be slightly different.)

What a damnable mess. He hated to lie, but the hesitant hope in Dora’s face when she asked if he enjoyed the kiss had squeezed his conscience into that pathetic admission.

The girl was sweet, too sweet for his tastes if truth be told. So he should not be surprised she stirred not one iota of passion in him, even pressed firmly against his cock. There hadn’t been so much as an inkling of a stirring down below.

That might concern him except for the immediate response when he thought of kissing Violet. If he had been engaged even in this light a dalliance with her, his ride home would have become damned uncomfortable. In fact, if he didn’t stop thinking of her right this minute he might regret it, though he doubted that.

Stepping out onto the portico in the brisk wind, his ardor abated somewhat; still, it didn’t matter. He’d be tortured by thoughts of Violet in his arms long after her departure and his wedding were things of the past.

BLURB:

The man of her dreams…belongs to another woman.

Destitute and without friends, Violet Carlton is forced to seek employment at the House of Pleasure in London. She steels herself for her first customer and is shocked when the man rescues her instead of ravishing her. A grateful Violet cannot help but admire the handsome Viscount Trevor. But she must curb her desire for the dashing nobleman she can never have because he is already betrothed to another . . .

Tristan had gone to the House of Pleasure for a last bit of fun before he became a faithful married man. But when he recognizes the woman in his bed, he becomes determined to save her instead. Now, his heart wars with his head as he falls for the vulnerable courtesan. Unable to break his betrothal without a scandal, Tris resolves to find Violet proper employment or a husband of her own. Still, his arms ache for Violet, urging him to abandon propriety and sacrifice everything to be with the woman he loves. . . .

In this snippet, I’m continuing the scene between Tristan and the woman he is betrothed to. It’s an arranged marriage so Tris can gain a valuable piece of property. He and Dora have met only a couple of times and danced perhaps twice. So Tris tries to reassure his young bride-to-be. This week I’m continuing on from last week. Tris has just kissed Dora, her very first kiss, although she tells him she’s uncertain whether  she liked it.

(Creative punctuation used to conform to the WWW rules. The published text may be slightly different.)

“Then we will have to try again, when next I come.” He smiled gently, trying to reassure her as he would a skittish colt. “Perhaps then you will know.”

“Did…did you enjoy it, my…Tristan?” The big blue eyes held out the hope of his approval.

“I did, Dora, very much. Soon I hope you will feel the same.”

Her smile stretched the width of her face, banishing her uneasiness and lightening her eyes to a dazzling azure. “Oh, I am sure I will, Tristan.” She bobbed her head and scurried out.

Tris angled her face toward him and pressed his lips against hers, gently at first, then more insistently. He slid his other hand around her back and pulled her even closer, until he could feel her small breasts against his chest. Carefully, he opened his mouth and ran the tip of his tongue along the seam of her tightly clamped lips.

She gasped and stumbled away. “My lord.”

He let her go. Her stricken stare told him this would be an uphill battle, near impossible to win in such a short time. Still, he smiled at her and asked, “Did you enjoy your first kiss, Dora?”

Raising her fingers to her lips, she rubbed them lightly, as if she could feel the kiss better that way. “I don’t know, my lord.”

Like A Firework: A Celebration of Love with All Those Miles I Walked by Viviana Mackade

DJ, my heroine in All Those Miles I Walked, is a woman I like and understand. And now that she’s with Scott, we share a common trouble: the Anxious Man.

Let me tell you a bit about him.

The anxious man is a highly intelligent, self-made, strong man who needs reassurances on your well-being whenever he decides to check on you, with no regard whatsoever for what you might be doing.  He’ll text or call you, and you have from 5 to 20 seconds to reply. Problem is, maybe you can’t because you’re, I don’t know, using the restroom or cleaning the ceiling with a long-handled brush. After an average of 10 minutes from the first text (and at that point you’ll have 150 texts and at least 300 calls) (yes, the Anxious Man can defy time and squeeze all those messages and calls in just few minutes) the police, fire department, an ambulance, and possibly the FBI and the National Guard will barrel down through your door.

I’ve been with my husband for 18 years and let me tell ya, that cool, self-controlled man can go bat-shit crazy if I don’t answer the phone in .3 nanoseconds.

So does Scott in the story.

Let’s be clear on one thing here: the Anxious Man doesn’t do that out of need of control. There’s no jealousy or will to tell you what you can or can’t do. He needs to know you’re well.

With him, a simple thumb-up emoticon would do.

Because he loves, and loves deep. So deep he needs to know the most important thing in his life: not that you love him, miss him, think about him, but that you’re alive.

Which means you can’t get mad. Or overly mad, at least. Sometimes I do get annoyed.

So, because I learned from personal experience that people like me and DJ will never be reliable with our phones, I have a word of advice for all the people like Marco and Scott, and the relationships that follow.

In my case it’s called iWatch, but any device like it would do.

My husband gave me one for our anniversary few years back, and now I never lose a call or text. I can reply anywhere with the littlest time and effort. It’s pretty, and it gives him peace of mind, and me the freedom from checking the phone or (the horror) of the ringtone.

You’re welcome.

BLURB:

At eighteen, DJ made a choice–her heart or her dreams. Neither was wrong, yet either would break her heart. She chose the world. Over a decade later, she returns to Crescent Creek and to the one regret she’s ever had–Scott.

Scott’s always been steady as a rocky reef. He’d loved once and when she’d left, his strong heart had crumbled like a sandcastle. Now DJ is back, and Scott wants nothing to do with her. If only Eva, his and DJ’s old friend, didn’t need their help. Because of her, he’s stuck with DJ and he’d be damned, she still gets under his skin.

DJ is a free spirit who needs the road under her feet. Scott is a family man who wants to groom his roots. With danger on their doorstep and a baby to keep safe, how much are they willing to compromise for love?

EXCERPT:

DJ put Henry in the stroller, grabbed his tiny ball cap and hers. It was a cloudy day, perfect for taking him play with the sand without the risk of burning him.

She filled her beach bag. Water for both, sunscreen, diapers, wipes, a clothes change, and a couple of towels. “We’re all set, buddy,” she told the boy as she got out.

“Shoot,” she mumbled when she reached the sidewalk. The beach umbrella. It was heavy and uncomfortable to carry, but even with the clouds, Henry needed protection. Besides, the beach was in front of the house, she really only had to walk to the other side of the road.

She loaded the umbrella on her shoulder, got back out of the house. Then in again. Henry liked to snack mid-midmorning, she’d bring some fruit pouches. Some cereal puffs, too. One more bottle of water, just in case.

“Third time’s the charm,” she sing-songed, earning a happy gurgle from Big H.

The build-and-destroy a sand castle never got old. They went through many shapes, sizes, and few rounds of panic because she wasn’t sure how to clean the inside of Henry’s mouth when he stuck his sand-covered fist in it.

Despite those little hiccups, she wanted to pat her back and compliment herself. Big H was safe, was having fun, and she was too. He looked so darn cute, all smiles and sandy feet and hands. She could send a pic–or ten–to Eva and her own mom. Maybe even one to Scott, because she was such in good mood.

DJ fished her cellphone from the bag, turned it on. 12 unanswered calls and 6 messages.

Fear raced through her good mood. Something had happened to Eva? To her parents? She checked the call list. Scott. From all of the calls and texts.

Well, unexpected. From zero interaction to a gazillion? She called his number; he picked up probably before it even rang.

“Where in the fucking hell are you?” he said quietly, but anger vibrated in his voice more than a guitar string.

“Okay. Not really prepared for that, but okay. We’re across the road, at the beach.”

“Damn it, DJ.” She had to move the phone closer to her ear to hear his words. “You’re supposed to text me when you leave,” he added.

“I know. We’re just across the road.”

“Are you in the house?” he asked. Still very much pissed, but at least he’d gone back to a human tone, one she actually heard.

“It’s basically the same.”

“It’s not.”

“Okay, my bad. I didn’t realize I’d agreed to a middle of the morning text. When did it happen, by the way?”

“Damn it, DJ.”

Oh god, back to hissing. “You said it already. A few times, in fact.”

She brushed a bit of sand from Henry’s legs, blew the boy a kiss that made him smile. Then heard a voice in the background of the call, then Scott saying to someone, “they’re fine, they are at the beach.”

“Who is with you?”

“Charlie.”

“You called the sheriff? Where are you?”

“At Eva’s, ready to bust the fucking door down,” he explained.

“That seems extreme.”

“You don’t text me, don’t call me, and don’t pick up the damned phone,” he said, anger making his even words a bit breathless. “What am I supposed to do?

“I guess, calm down, would be the first thing.” She’d always thought he might have a stroke, at some point. All control freaks like him did. Maybe today was the day, who knew? “You saw us at 8 this morning–two hours ago. You could have waited until, let’s say, lunchtime before freaking out this big.”

“I could kill you right now,” he said, so evenly it might actually have been truer than truth.

“You might want to be careful what you say with Sheriff Charlie there with you. By the way, tell her I say hi. Actually, can you give her the phone? We planned a spa day for next week but I’ll have to postpone it until Eva comes home.”

He closed the call.

Staring at the silent phone, DJ took a couple of long breaths.

This was going to stop. Right now.

Happy Fourth of July!

Happy Fourth of July, everyone!

My plans are to cook hamburgers and hot dogs out on the grill, have potato salad and grilled veggies, and a flag decorated brownie for dessert. Then, tonight, we’ll go to Colonial Williamsburg to watch the fireworks. There’s nothing like living a couple of miles from Yorktown to bring home the spirit of Independence. 🙂

I’ve been humming Hamilton for weeks now, so I’d feel remiss if I didn’t share one of it’s songs for Independence Day. Here’s “The Battle of Yorktown” from Hamilton.

(Creative punctuation used to conform to the WWW rules. The published text may be slightly different.)

She turned her head to the side and shook it, then tried to slip her hands out of his.

“No need to be afraid, my dear. I won’t hurt you.” Slowly, sensually, he brushed the back of her hand with his lips, then turned it over and grazed her palm as well. “Kisses are a normal part of married life.”

“I know.” Her voice was stronger than a whisper, but still low. “I’ve seen my brother Simon kissing his wife Judith.”

“Would you like for me to kiss you?” He stared into her clear blue eyes and cupped her cheek.

An almost imperceptible nod.

In this snippet, I’ve moved to a scene between Tristan and the woman he is betrothed to. It’s an arranged marriage so Tris can gain a valuable piece of property. He and Dora have met only a couple of times and danced perhaps twice. So Tris tries to reassure his young bride-to-be.

“I’m certain this is sudden, my dear, yet I hope we may be better acquainted before the wedding in three weeks.”

“Three weeks!” she said swaying, and Tris grasped her arm, taking the opportunity to draw her closer.

“Soon, yes, however,” he gathered her hands into his, “we will spend much of the time in conversation, getting to know one another. Would you like that, Dora?”

She jerked her head up at the familiar use of her name, then hesitated, her mouth open. “Yes, I would like that, Lord Trevor.”

“You may call me Tristan or Tris when we are private. In public, of course, simply Trevor will do.” He kissed her hands and she shivered. They would need to further their acquaintance a bit more rapidly. “Have you never been kissed before, Dora?”

Still, his arms ache for Violet, urging him to abandon propriety and sacrifice everything to be with the woman he loves. . . .
