Weekend Writing Warriors ~ 10/15/17 Hearts at All Hallows’ Eve~ Disappointment

weekend_writing_warriors_header3

I’m sharing from my brand new short story I’ve just finished writing for Halloween called Hearts at All Hallows’ Eve. It’s set in the world of my Handful of Hearts series and it will be FREE to those who sign up for my newsletter in October! Just click here. 🙂

The cover’s almost ready–release will be Monday or Tuesday, so please look for it!

Miss Cecilia Powell is attending her first masquerade on All Hallows’ Eve when she sees something just a little strange. A hooded figure in black begins to stalk toward her.

Relentlessly, he continued toward her, creating new flutterings within. Excitement rather than terror she was sure. Did she know the gentleman? His dress gave her no clues, of course. Perhaps his voice would give him away, as had the others, like Lady Haversham’s, when she’d heard her speak tonight.

His graceful, light carriage as he strode onward, sent more anticipation buzzing through her. Cecilia could not stop staring as he halted in front of her and made a deep bow.

“Goddess Astraea, I come to make obeisance to your loveliness. Fair one, I am rendered weak at the beauty and grace that stands before me,” he said, and the rich, deep baritone of his voice fell oh, so pleasurably on her ear.

Disappointment tugged at her, however, when his speech didn’t arouse any recognition.

BLURB for Hearts at All Hallows’ Eve:

When Miss Cecilia Powell attends her very first masquerade on All Hallows’ Eve, she’s thrilled when a mysterious  reveler pays court to her. As their encounter continues, Cecilia is charmed, then smitten with this masked stranger, even though she senses something odd about him. Is he truly the man of her dreams, or will Cecilia find her dream a true  nightmare?

Upcoming New Release: Hearts at All Hallows’ Eve

My paranormal Halloween historical, Hearts at All Hallows’ Eve, should release next week! It’s a holiday short story with a paranormal twist that’s new for me. I certainly hope you like it!

Cover Coming Soon!

BLURB:

When Miss Cecilia Powell attends her very first masquerade on All Hallows’ Eve, she’s thrilled when a mysterious reveler pays court to her. As their encounter continues, Cecilia is charmed, then smitten with this masked stranger, even though she senses something odd about him. Is he truly the man of her dreams, or will Cecilia find her dream a true nightmare?

And you can get it for FREE if you sign up for my newsletter here!

EXCERPT:

Gazing about the room, still hopeful she could catch someone’s eye, Cecilia glanced into one of the darker corners of the room. The black wall hangings stirred, as by a breeze, and a hooded figure emerged, as though a shadow had come to life.

A thrill of fear shot through her and she pressed her back against the unyielding marble, trying to melt into it. Goose flesh rose on her arms as the apparition continued forward. Toward her. Her breath stopped and she stood as if rooted to the floor, unable to move or speak.

The black form reached up to its head and suddenly gold glinted in the candlelight. A glittering half-mask of intricate design concealed the gentleman’s face, though it revealed black, curly hair and the strong chin and jaw of the wearer.

Cecilia gasped, unaware until then she’d been holding her breath, as realization struck that the man—for certainly it was a normal man who stood before her—wore a black domino as his costume. Most revelers had chosen more colorful clothing. This gentleman wore one of the simplest and most elegant of costumes, the classic hooded cape that enveloped him in black entirely, save for his glittery gold mask.

Relentlessly, he continued toward her creating new flutterings within.

Don’t forget to sign up for my newsletter, Passion is Timeless, to get this holiday short story for FREE!

Look for the release early next week!

Medieval Monday: First Encounter! ~ Lane McFarland’s Elsbeth

MedMon

First Meet!

is our theme for this round of Medieval Monday!

Join us, our heroes and heroines and as we see that crucial first encounter with a couple meant to be together.

This week’s excerpt is from

Lane McFarland’s

Elsbeth

Excerpt:

Brandon nodded at his men, and they fell in line behind him. Grit crunched beneath their boots as they marched down the musty corridor, the sound echoing in the dark, quiet abbey. As he expected, the sisters had retired for the night. It was fortunate this one heard his knock.

She led them into the front solar and stood to the side as they filed into the room. His travel-weary men crowded the small chamber. Brandon’s feet had grown numb hours ago, and his face burned from the ferocious wind; however, the hearth’s welcoming glow bathed him in warmth.

Blurb:

Elsbeth MacDougall recoils at the violent Scottish rebellion and the bleak plight of orphans. Vowing to protect the homeless, she embarks on a journey to Scone and sets her course to become a nun, sheltering children from the cruelties of war. But when Brandon McLeod arrives at the Abby, he shakes her convictions and stirs provoking emotions she buried long ago.

After English soldiers murder his family, Brandon McLeod determines a course of revenge and leads numerous clans in Scotland’s fight for freedom. Bent on the annihilation of English oppression, he is resolved to a life of solitude, vowing never to marry and chance the pain of losing loved ones again. However, that was before he met the enchanting Elsbeth.

Fall Special: Not Without Risk by Jennifer Lowrey

Hello fans and readers! How is everyone today? I’m great. Fall is my favorite season and in honor of that I am offering the second book in my Wolff Securities Series, Not Without Risk, for .99 cents on Amazon, September 30-October 4! Yay! Of course, Kindle Unlimited subscribers always read for free. Keep reading for buy links!

If you haven’t read the first book, Maximum Risk, no worries. These are standalone books as well as part of a series. You don’t have to read them in order, but I recommend it. Simply because you will get a fuller character experience by reading them in order.

As a bonus for your continued support and generosity I have including one of my favorite fall recipes. I make these muffins every year and they never last long, lol. Please enjoy the recipe and the .99 cent book!

Not Without Risk Blurb:

He always keeps his promises…

Private security specialist, Nate Wolff promised to rescue humanitarian aid worker, Macy Gibbs, not harbor a fugitive. Determined to keep his promise and not make the same mistakes his brother made, he risks his life to protect her from the terrorist group hunting her.

Keeping this one will be the hardest thing he’s ever had to do…

With a bounty on her head for the murder of a man who bought her in an illegal human trafficking ring, Macy Gibbs puts both her life, and the life of the tall, handsome stranger who’s vowed to rescue her, in danger. Emotionally scarred from her ordeal, she trusts no one. But, can the biggest danger she’s about to face be the impact this former SEAL has on her heart?

Not Without Risk Excerpt:

Nate put a hand on Macy’s shoulder. She didn’t stir. Unable to resist, he caressed her cheek. Warm. Not as hot. A good sign. Beneath his hand her skin felt soft as silk. He gently ran his thumb across the fading bruise on her jawline. Anger and the urge to protect and defend surged through him. Except, it felt more personal. Not just a bodyguard protecting his charge. More…

Nope. Not going there. The reasons stuck like a knife in his heart.

He dropped his hand to his side, sobered, and put his thoughts in proper order. First things first. Get Macy dressed, then grab her and go. They may not have confiscated his weapons, but that could be a ruse to keep him off guard.

His supply of clothing for Macy was running low. Only two shirts and one pair of pants left. Foregoing the undergarments, he grasped the edge of the blanket, prepared to dress her and make a run for it.

“Nate?”

The murmured question came from Macy. He froze, his gaze flying to her face to find her eyes open. Glazed, confused.

Letting go of the blanket, he leaned over her. “Hey. I’m here.”

Her beautiful blue eyes that reminded him so much of Bleu Lake back home, met his, radiating with pain. “Don’t leave me. Please.”

The impact of those words went straight through his chest. At that moment, he knew they couldn’t go. Not until she was healthy enough to go. They’d pushed hard already and look where it got them.

Bending, he pressed a kiss to her forehead. “I’m not going anywhere. Go back to sleep. You’re safe.”

That seemed to work because the tension went out of her muscles and her eyes drifted closed. Seconds later her breathing evened out, indicating she slept peacefully.

Nate straightened and scrubbed a hand down his face. He returned the clothes to his pack, dragged the crude chair in front of the bed and dropped down on it. His Glock now rested across his thigh, finger near the trigger as he settled in.

Whomever, or whatever, came through that door they would have to go through him first in order to get to Macy. And he’d die before he let another person hurt her.

Weekend Writing Warriors ~ 10/01/17 To Woo A Wicked Widow ~ “You Cannot Kill Him”

weekend_writing_warriors_header3

Next week I’ll be changing to a brand new short story I’m writing for Halloween called Hearts at All Hallows Eve. It’s set in the world of my Handful of Hearts series and it will be FREE to those who sign up for my newsletter in October! Just click here. 🙂

Today I’m sharing another snippet from Widow that continues from last week. Charlotte has been thrust inside the tollbooth to find the man she loves with a pistol to his head.

(Creative punctuation utilized to conform to WWW rules.)

Charlotte’s heart thudded painfully in her chest. The light flickered, dimming to a dull gray as she began to slump again. Oblivion would certainly be preferable to what her father surely had in store for her.

Cold water hit her face and chest, forcing her back into consciousness.

“You will be awake to see this, Charlotte.” Her father thrust a stoneware mug at the tollkeeper, who clutched it to his chest as if it were a shield. Then her father nodded to the man with the pistol.

“No! You cannot kill him.” Charlotte wrenched her arms out of the man’s grasp and lunged for the gun.

BLURB for To Woo A Wicked Widow:

The war years are behind them.
The future is before them.
And one by one, the widows of Lyttlefield Park are getting restless . . .

Lady Charlotte Cavendish is still the spirited girl who tried to elope in the name of love. That dream was thwarted by her father who trapped her into a loveless, passionless marriage. But now widowed, Charlotte is free to reenter the giddy world of the ton—and pursue her desires. For hardly your typical widow, she remains innocent to the pleasures of the flesh. Yet her life is finally her own, and she intends to keep it that way . . .

Nash, the twelfth Earl of Wrotham, is beguiled by Charlotte at first sight—and the feeling is mutual. When he receives her intriguing invitation to a house party, the marriage-minded lord plans to further their acquaintance. But even he cannot sway her aversion to matrimony, and only with great restraint does he resist her most tempting offer. For unbeknownst to Charlotte, the misadventures of the past are revisiting them both, and bedding her could cost him everything—or give him everything he ever wanted . . .

Happy Release Day! Between Despair and Ecstasy by Daryl Devore

When a Vacation and a Scene in a Book Come Together

First off – Happy Release Day! Today is Between Despair and Ecstasy‘s release day and that makes me happy. What else does?

My favourite place in the world is on a beach. I live landlocked in Ontario, Canada, but a beach is where I am the happiest.

In book 2 of the Two Hearts ~ One Love Trilogy, Darien’s Desire, mega rock star, Darien, and drag queen club owner, Erika, spend a hot romantic weekend on a beach in Goa, India.

In book 3, my latest, Between Despair and Ecstasy, Erika visits Darien at his beach house in Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina.

So where does the vacation come in? My daughter currently lives in North Carolina and every time we go visit, there is always a trip to the beach. It doesn’t have to be summer. It can be a warm October day. I love long walks on the beach. I zen out sitting on the sand, staring at the water.

What beach have we frequented the most? Wrightsville Beach, North Carolina. We’ve been down to Kure Beach, over to Fort Fisher and even up to the Outer Banks, but for a quiet day we hit Wrightsville.

I could show you a picture of the house I used as Darien’s, but I don’t have the owner’s permission. But the house does exist at the beach. In the book, Erika and Darien’s mother go to a bakery. In reality, the bakery is a fabulous ice cream shop in Wrightsville that is also a mandatory stop when we go. Why didn’t I use the ice cream shop? In the story, it’s February and cold out, so it made more sense to go to a bakery for a cup of tea, some cookies and a chat.

My next book has no beach in it. It takes place in NYC in December. But I’m guessing the one after that will have a beach. Now I just have to figure out which one – Grand Caymans, Hawaii, Figi…..

EXCERPT:

Sweat streamed off Darien’s brow. Some dripped into his eyes. It stung. His heart throbbed against his ribs. Fire inched down his throat. Every muscle in his body ached. His head pounded from the pandemonium. The explosions. The screams. The pain threatening to split his skull. Dropping his head back, he closed his eyes. His chest heaved as he gulped air. He needed a moment. Get some strength back.

The screams grew louder.

Damn.

He inhaled and released a long breath.

They wanted him. He had to continue. To perform. Like a trained monkey. Do people even do that anymore? Train monkeys? He peeled his eyes open. The glare of the overhead lights blazed down at him. He lifted his head. The screams grew louder.

“Oh. So, you want more?”

But what if I don’t have any more? What if I just can’t continue? Twelve weeks. Four shows a week. I’m beat.

The roar from eighty thousand Parisians was tumultuous. Fans yelled at the top of their lungs. They pounded their feet on the floor, raising their hands in the air, clapping. Glow sticks, cell phones, and lighters swayed like flowers in a breeze.

He grinned. Eighty thousand Parisians and one fiancée. He glanced to his left. Seated on the top stage step was Erika. She’d arrived just minutes before the show started. Just enough time for a passionate, but quick, hello kiss. He needed more. He needed her, and he knew it. She smiled at him. He loved that smile. He could stare at it all day. The way her soft lips curved up. A hint of sassiness in her expression.

Just finish the show. Grab Erika and run. Dodge the fans. Just get out of here.

He looked out over the crowd. “But what if I’m too tired to continue?”

“No,” the crowd wailed.

He grinned. “Well, maybe I could go on if you told me you loved me.”

The cacophony of sounds was deafening. “Je t’aime. Love you.”

He lifted his hands. “Do you love me?”

“Oui. Yes.”

He ripped his black t-shirt over his head and threw it into the fans. “Do. You. Love. Me?” He yelled out as he glanced at Erika.

She jumped up and down, screaming with the crowd.

“I can’t hear you.”

The building shook with the fans’ frenzy.

“Five. Six. Five. Six. Seven. Eight.”

Fireworks exploded. Lasers shot around the stadium. Cass, the drummer, crashed the symbols as Darien spun, posed then inhaled a deep breath and opened his mouth to sing.

BLURB:

How can Erika prove to herself and Darien that she loves and trusts him? Simple. All she has to do is jump out of a plane.

Concerned for his fiancée, Erika Bailey’s safety, rock star Darien Scott races to Bangkok to protect her, only to discover his brother is missing. Fearing the worse, he contacts his nemesis, Gan, and makes a repulsive deal that will free his brother and protect Erika’s club, The Pink Flamingo. Or so he thought. When a python and Gan are involved, things go sour, and Darien sinks into a deep depression.

Erika is disheartened by the betrayal of her parents. Her father’s destruction of her club, and the humiliation of her mother’s drunken behavior have her feeling down, but those are the least of her worries. She has a wedding to plan, but won’t. Having been betrayed too often, she’s scared to trust Darien.

How can Erika prove to herself and Darien that she loves and trusts him? Simple. All she has to do is jump out of a plane.

Medieval Monday: First Encounter! ~ Ruth A. Casie’s The Guardian’s Witch

MedMon

First Meet!

Join us, our heroes and heroines and as we see that crucial first encounter with a couple meant to be together.

This week’s excerpt is from

Ruth A. Casie’s

The Guardian’s Witch

Excerpt:

Something primal and compelling kept Alex conscious. He was always aware when she was near. Her soft lilting murmur drove the buzzing from his head. The ache eased into a dull roar. Everything was a struggle, staying awake, keeping his eyes open. Faith, breathing was an effort. He squinted and worked hard to take in the scene. There were a few minutes left before the light once again would be unbearable. He needed to rest his eyes, but not right now. He forced himself to stay in command of his senses.

Blurb:

England, 1290

Lord Alex Stelton can’t resist a challenge, especially one with a prize like this: protect a castle on the Scottish border for a year, and it’s his. Desperate for land of his own, he’ll do anything to win the estate—even enter a proxy marriage to Lady Lisbeth Reynolds, the rumored witch who lives there.

Feared and scorned for her second sight, Lisbeth swore she’d never marry, but she is drawn to the handsome, confident Alex. She sees great love with him but fears what he would think of her gift and her visions of a traitor in their midst.

Despite his own vow never to fall in love, Alex can’t get the alluring Lisbeth out of his mind and is driven to protect her when attacks begin on the border. But as her visions of danger intensify, Lisbeth knows it is she who must protect him. Realizing they’ll secure their future only by facing the threat together, she must choose between keeping her magic a secret and losing the man she loves.

Weekend Writing Warriors ~ 09/24/17 To Woo A Wicked Widow ~ A Shocking Tableau

weekend_writing_warriors_header3

This past Monday, Kensington revealed the cover to my upcoming release To Woo A Wicked Widow, so I just had to share it here this week!

Today I’m sharing a snippet from Widow that continues from an earlier snippet which you can find here. Now, I’m skipping ahead a few sentences. Charlotte has been thrust inside the tollbooth to find a shocking sight.

(Creative punctuation utilized to conform to WWW rules.)

The flickering light of the hearth revealed a large man holding Edward’s head down on a crude plank table, a pistol pressed against his temple. The tollkeeper in his nightshirt and cap, eyes wide, face pale, stood in front of the fire, staring at the scene. To the left of the table stood her father.

All the strength ran out of Charlotte’s legs and she began to sink toward the floor.

The man she had wounded grabbed her arm and hauled her up. “No, you don’t. That’s all, your lordship. Just the two of ’em.”

Leaning on his silver-knobbed walking stick, her father fixed his dark eyes on her, his mouth a black line between thin lips.

BLURB for To Woo A Wicked Widow:

The war years are behind them.

And one by one, the widows of Lyttlefield Park are getting restless . . .

Lady Charlotte Cavendish is still the spirited girl who tried to elope in the name of love. That dream was thwarted by her father who trapped her into a loveless, passionless marriage.
