Author’s Choice

This time around on Medieval Monday our theme is simply Author’s choice. Each author get to choose their own theme–celebration, food, betrayal–everything is on the table.

I have chosen a celebration–a wedding and more particularly a wedding night–for my snippet. My excerpt is from Betrayal and can be found this week at  Ashley’s  blog if you’d like to keep up with my story.

This week on my blog, is an excerpt from

Ashley York’s

Eyes of the Seer

He wishes to prove him…She is desperate to escape

Excerpt:

He must look near death to elicit that type of concern from her. He tried to rally, but found he could not even lift his head.

So he simply sighed, a heavy sigh. “Unfortunately, I am not convinced his lady will survive.”

Astrid stood. “Oh no!”

His eyes flew open, rounding. She clutched her arms to her chest, her face a mask of dread.

Blurb:

In ancient Ireland, men and women take to the legends for answers. Different-colored eyes are the mark of a Seer, it is said, and those who can see the future are in league with the devil. They cannot be suffered to live.

He wishes to prove himself…

Marcán of Clonascara bears the bloodline of Brian Boru, the legendary high king, and his prowess as a warrior has earned him great respect. But he was born with different-colored eyes, and there are some who would have him suffer a Seer’s fate. His fiercest adversary is Beibhinn, mother to Diarmuid, his close friend and king, and Astrid, the woman who holds his heart. If Astrid ever showed him any interest, he would fight Beibhinn and any army to wed her.

She is desperate to escape…

Astrid is sick of her mother’s belittling, but her brother is in no hurry to see her married, so she decides to see to her own match-making. The man she approaches quickly reveals his lack of honor, but her overbearing mother pushes her to wed him anyway. When Astrid discovers Marcán’s love for her, she realizes that what she wants has been in front of her all along. True happiness awaits them, but only if they can put a stop to her mother’s plans.

Weekend Writing Warriors ~ 02/18/18 To Woo A Wicked Widow ~ Hot Blood

weekend_writing_warriors_header3

More from my upcoming release To Woo A Wicked Widow, due out in 38 days!

I’m continuing the scene, at a ball, where Charlotte meets Nash, the Earl of Wrotham.  We are in Nash’s POV. Charlotte has tripped, fallen into his arms, and he responded with “The pleasure is certainly all mine, my lady.” She has recovered and Nash makes his move. Unfortunately, his plan is interrupted by another man, Alan Garrett, who has a plan of his own to whisk Charlotte away onto the dance floor. He’s almost been successful, until Nash steps up with a protest. However, Garrett is successful in whisking Charlotte away, and Nash is on the brink of making a scene, when a hand falls on his shoulder.

(Creative punctuation utilized to conform to WWW rules.)

“Steady, Wrotham.” George Abernathy held on to him and turned him away from the eyes that were beginning to take notice of him. “He’s not worth starting a brawl that will get you banned from Almack’s.”

Nash exhaled sharply, hot blood still pounding through his veins. Another breath and he was closer to control. His friend was right. He didn’t need to start a scandal that would help neither him nor Lady Cavendish. He glanced at Lady John, who had paled, a wan smile pasted on her lips.

“I am certain Lady Cavendish would be very agreeable to partnering you for the second set, my lord.” She fluttered her fan and tried to meet his eyes.

“Perhaps I will ask for that dance when this one is concluded.” Like hell he would. Nash snapped a bow to Lady John, took his leave of Abernathy, then turned on his heel and strode out of the ballroom.

BLURB for To Woo A Wicked Widow:

The war years are behind them.
The future is before them.
And one by one, the widows of Lyttlefield Park are getting restless . . .

Lady Charlotte Cavendish is still the spirited girl who tried to elope in the name of love. That dream was thwarted by her father who trapped her into a loveless, passionless marriage. But now widowed, Charlotte is free to reenter the giddy world of the ton—and pursue her desires. For hardly your typical widow, she remains innocent to the pleasures of the flesh. Yet her life is finally her own, and she intends to keep it that way . . .

Nash, the twelfth Earl of Wrotham, is beguiled by Charlotte at first sight—and the feeling is mutual. When he receives her intriguing invitation to a house party, the marriage-minded lord plans to further their acquaintance. But even he cannot sway her aversion to matrimony, and only with great restraint does he resist her most tempting offer. For unbeknownst to Charlotte, the misadventures of the past are revisiting them both, and bedding her could cost him everything—or give him everything he ever wanted . . .

Only Seduction Will Do: Cover Reveal!

At long last I can reveal this gorgeous cover for the upcoming fourth book in my House of Pleasure series

Only Seduction Will Do

This next book in the series, set in Georgian England, is the story of Jack Fitzwilliam, the Earl of Manning and Miss Alethea Forsythe.  We met Jack in book one, Only Scandal Will Do, his sister Katarina Fitzwilliam’s story. Alethea we have heard of in every book, but are only just meeting her now, as she tells her own story.

Here’s the blurb:

In a vulnerable moment, Alethea Forsythe allows herself to be seduced by a married peer.  Now she is with child—and without recourse.  Her reputation will soon be in tatters and she will be forced to wed a stranger—unless she takes matters into her own hands.

When Jack Fitzwilliam, the Earl of Manning, is summoned from the House of Pleasure on a matter of importance, he hardly expects to receive a marriage proposal. He’s long been aware of Alethea’s infatuation with him, but at twenty-three, taking on an expectant bride is not in his plans.  Yet the desperation in the lady’s lovely eyes overrides his misgivings.

Alethea would not have believed it possible for a man to be too chivalrous. But though her new husband is perfectly amicable in public, he insists they maintain separate quarters. Desperate to possess his heart and prove herself a wife in every way, she boldly reaches out to Jack. And as their unexpected connection between silken sheets is tested by jealousy and misfortune, Jack must decide where honor ends…and true passion begins . .

If you’d like to visit my Pinterest board for Only Seduction Will Do, the link is here.

And here is an exclusive excerpt from Only Seduction Will Do:

“Well, my lord?” She stood in the center of the gazebo, her frank blue eyes holding a touch of impatience.

“Miss Forsythe, I…I—” Damnation. He really should do this properly.

“Lord Manning, you seem not to be able to summon language past the personal pronoun.” The frown darkening her brow showed her impatience with his antics. “What matter has brought you to speak to me?”

“Just this.” Dropping to one knee, Jack grasped her gloved hand.

Immediately, she attempted to pull it away, but he gripped her fingers tightly, fixing her before him. He gazed up unto a thunderous face, outrage warring with hurt.

“I have come to ask you to be my wife, Miss Forsythe.”

Tears started from her eyes and she pulled back so violently she almost dragged him to the floor.

He managed to hang on to her hand, though he feared the force would break her delicate bones.

“Stop it. Just stop this idiocy, my lord.” Trying to shake him off had thrown her off balance. She stumbled back and sat hard in one of the wicker chairs. It creaked with the blow. Tears dripped down her cheeks. “Why are you doing this? I didn’t think you a man who would taunt a woman, misuse her so ill, just because she had shown you her desperation.”

Christ. Of course she’d be suspicious of his motives. After he’d pronounced himself betrothed not twelve hours ago she had every right to be. “I beg your pardon, Miss Forsythe. I have begun this badly.” He fished in his pocket, drew out a handkerchief, and handed it to her.

After wiping her streaming face she took a deep breath. “Thank you.”

“N’tall. Please allow me to begin again.” Jack drew a deep breath of his own and plunged on. “Miss Forsythe, after due consideration of the honor of your request of me last evening…um, this morning, I have altered my obligations to the impediment in my life that made me unable to accept your proposal. I am now unencumbered and fully willing to accept you if you are still willing to become my wife.”

Miss Forsythe grew pale and still, her hand cold despite her gloves. “But you said you were betrothed, my lord.”

“And so I was, this morning. I have since broken with the lady, to our mutual satisfaction.”

“But how—”

“Believe me, Miss Forsythe, the lady will not suffer in any way from this parting. Indeed, she seemed quite relieved to be rid of me.” He chuckled at the memory of Miss Carlton’s vehement insistence that Lord Trevor allow the betrothal to be broken.

“But how could anyone wish for you to jilt them, my lord?” The horror and disbelief in her eyes told its own tale. This was why she had come to him with her proposal.

“I believe the lady’s true affections lay elsewhere. In any event, she has released me from my promise to her and made it possible for me to offer you the protection of my name. Unless someone else has come forward to champion you?”

“No.” The denial came out a croak. She cleared her throat and the hand he still claimed loosened its grip. “No one else has been contacted to my knowledge.”

Damn Braeton. Well, when she found out about the other offers, it would be too late. Not that he believed she would have accepted any of that lot.

She stared at him with eyes the color of a bleak day. “I will say, however, that my cousin does not always inform me of what he does on my behalf. There could be an army of suitors awaiting my return this instant.”

“Then shall I steal a march on these phantom suitors, Miss Forsythe? I do have the prior claim.” He turned on her a smile as engaging and boyish as he could make it.

“May I ask a question first, my lord?”

Intent on her face, he nodded.

“Why break with the other lady when you owe me no loyalty at all?” Her eyes searched his face, seeking honesty, perhaps.

Or, it suddenly dawned on him, a hint of affection?

The pieces of Miss Forsythe’s puzzling behavior fell into place with a suddenness that made his heart skip a beat. Miss Forsythe had developed a tendre for him.

Southern Comfort Food ~ My Delicious Valentine: Rolled Pavlova

HAPPY VALENTINE’S DAY

Welcome back to Southern Comfort Food!

Today’s recipe, in honor of Valentine’s Day, isn’t strictly Southern Comfort Food. But I wanted to share something festive and sweet and this recipe came to mind–from the first summer I spent in Ireland.

Keeping in mind that I would need to do research, I did my doctoral dissertation on Irish theatre. As a result, I spent two wonderful summers in Dublin, researching, attending theatre, shopping, and eating some of the best food you’d ever imagine.

The first summer I was there I stayed with a wonderful Irish woman, Mrs. Olive Gogarty, the aunt of a fellow student (he later became a priest). He knew I was going to be in Ireland and alone for six weeks, so he made the arrangements.

I had a fantastic time and Olive took care of me like I was family. She cooked breakfast and dinner for me, did my laundry, and even cut my hair (one of the best cuts I ever had!). I loved the food so much, I asked her for a lot of her recipes and rolled Pavlova was one of the best and most festive.

Rolled Pavlova with lemon curd and mandarin oranges

The story I was told was that the famous ballet dancer, Anna Pavlova, toured Australia and New Zealand in the early 20th century. This desert was created in her honor. Of course this is hotly debated, but it’s still a good tale.

The Pavlova in the picture sadly is not one of mine. I didn’t have time to cook this week so I found this one instead so you can at least see what a basic one would look like. Usually they have fruit (Olive suggests raspberries and mandarin oranges) and other decorations sprinkled over the top.

Olive made the Pavlova for me and I remember it to this day! I hope you enjoy it too!

Rolled Pavlova

Ingredients:

3 egg whites

6 oz caster (powdered) sugar

1 tsp vinegar

1 tsp cornstarch (level)

1/2 pint cream

Instructions:

Pre-heat oven to 275 degrees.

Whip egg whites until thickened. Add sugar to egg whites slowly. Mix vinegar and cornstarch together then mix into egg white mixture.

On a jelly roll pan put foil and grease lightly. Spread mixture evenly on pan, then cook at 275 degrees for about 20-25 minutes. You should be able to tap your fingernails on the surface of the meringue. Remove from oven and transfer to waxed paper and place on cooling rack. Wait until the meringue is cool but pliable.

Whip 1/2 pint of cream until soft peaks appear. Spread whipped cream on cooled Pavlova. Sprinkle or arrange the raspberries, kiwi, and mandarin over the meringue. Carefully roll until you are at the end, then roll onto plate, seam down.

When ready to serve, sift a little powdered sugar over the top and serve.

Meringue Cake Pavlova with cream, berries and mint

Enjoy this Valentine’s Day!

Come back next week for another recipe full of down-home southern comfort. 🙂

Excerpt:

She folded her hands in her lap. “Sir, your appetite is a thing of wonder.”

He swallowed, then grinned at her. “Why, thank you.” His smile disappeared. “Or do you criticize?”

“Not criticize. Marvel.”

His dimples were back. The one on the right was deeper. “I’m a man of many talents, and eating is one of them.” He took another bite.

“Evidently.”

Blurb:

Haunted by memories; healed by love.

Lady Constance de Bret was determined to be a nun, until shadows from the past eclipsed her present.  Marriage is the safest option, but she insists on a spiritual union, in which physical intimacy is forbidden.  Not so easy with a bridegroom who wields unparalleled charm!  But a long-buried secret could taint his affection and cloak her in shadow forever.

Back from the Crusades, Sir Robert le Donjon craves a home of his own and children to inherit it.  From the moment he meets Constance, he feels a mysterious bond between them.  When she’s threatened, he vows to protect her and agrees to the spiritual marriage, with the hope of one day persuading her to enjoy a “real” one.  She captivates him but opens old wounds and challenges everything he thought he believed.

Two souls in need of healing.  Two hearts destined to beat as one.

Weekend Writing Warriors ~ 02/11/18 To Woo A Wicked Widow ~ Mayhem in His Heart

weekend_writing_warriors_header3

More from my upcoming release To Woo A Wicked Widow, due out in 45 days!

I’m continuing the scene, at a ball, where Charlotte meets Nash, the Earl of Wrotham.  We are in Nash’s POV. The first speaker is Nash.

(Creative punctuation utilized to conform to WWW rules.)

Nash glanced at Lady Cavendish, whose face had paled, and asked, “Are you all right, my lady?”

She started, as though coming out of a dream, to reply, “Yes, I am fine. Something reminded me—”

“That I am supposed to be your partner—there, Wrotham, the lady herself has said it. Are you satisfied?” Garrett nimbly plucked her hand out of Nash’s grip and before he could protest, whisked her out to the area where couples were making up the first set.

Stunned, it took Nash a second to register what the rogue had done. He started toward the dance floor, mayhem in his heart. He’d show the scoundrel how they took care of such slights in the Navy.

A hand on his shoulder made him swing around, his own hand coming up to fend off this new menace.

Radish is NOT Just a Vegetable!

Until recently, I thought Radish was just a vegetable.

Courtesy of Wikimedia Commons

No more!  Radish is a new way of buying books.

Radish is an app you download to your phone. You buy books to read on your cell phone in 2K – 4K segments, downloading each segment as it becomes available. Many authors in the program are now making books they have on pre-order available on Radish before the release date of the book. So if you really want to read it before everyone else, you can!

The only way I know about this is that Kensington has signed me up for the Radish program!  My upcoming release, To Woo A Wicked Widow, will be available in bookstores and as an e-book on March 27. However, if you want to read it BEFORE the release date, download the Radish app, buy it (pay for each segment as you want to read it–so if you don’t like it, you stop paying for it), and read it.

The first segment of To Woo A Wicked Widow became available yesterday! Segments will be released each Monday, Wednesday, and Friday until sometime just after the book releases (approximately April).

If you’d like to try Radish, and read my book before its actual release, click HERE.

And to whet your appetite, here’s the first half of the first Radish segment of To Woo A Wicked Widow:

London, May 1810

Moonlight streamed into the mews, brightening the night and making Lady Charlotte Fownhope draw back into the shadows of the stable. She strained to hear sounds from her father, the Earl of Grafton’s, town house, but only the clink of bridles came to her ears as Edward, her groom, led her chestnut mare and his horse into the light.

“You should have taught me to saddle her. Then I could have helped you.” She came forward to take the reins.

“I’ll always be here to do that for you, my lady.” He smiled, his white teeth a flash in the swarthy, handsome face, then leaned down to kiss her.

His warm lips caressed her, calmed her even as the comforting scent of horses and leather that hung about him enveloped her. This was where she belonged, in Edward’s arms. Not with Lord Ramsay, her father’s choice for a husband.

A horse snorted and Charlotte jumped back. “We must be off. Dinner will last only so long. With luck, no one will look in on me on me but my cousin Jane, so we will have until the morning before they know I am gone.”

Edward nodded and cupped his hands to give her a leg up.

Once in the saddle, she gathered the reins and waited for him to mount, her stomach tightening with excitement. “You know the way?”

“Yes, we take the Great North Road as far as York, then over to Manchester and up to Gretna Green.” He slid into the saddle. “We’ll be on horseback the first two days. They won’t expect that. They’ll be looking for a carriage.” He reached over and grasped her hands. “You’ll be all right on horseback for so long?”

She nodded, prompted to sit up straighter. If she had to spend a week in the saddle to be with Edward, she would do it. “Let’s go.”

They walked the horses out of the light, into the darkness of the underpass, keeping quiet until they were at the end of the row of stables. Charlotte resisted the urge to look over her shoulder to see if they had been pursued. They had been careful. They would succeed. She drew her black cloak around her shoulders against the now-chill wind.

At a nod from Edward, she tapped her horse and Bella started into a quick trot. The clop, clop of the hooves on the cobbled streets soothed her. After months of planning, they were on their way at last.

* * * *

Several hours later, Charlotte and Edward slowed for another tollgate. They had passed through four already, and after the first, Charlotte had turned the bag of coins over to him to take care of the fees. A twinge in her hip, an ache in her thigh muscle told her that her body had begun to feel the strain of constant motion in the saddle. When they finally stopped for the night, she doubted she would want to climb back on Bella tomorrow.

Slowed to a walk, her mare nickered, and from somewhere behind the toll gate another one answered. Charlotte patted her withers and glanced at Edward.

“Tollkeeper!” he called, rending the silent night. After a moment he called again, still with no result.

“He must be dead asleep.” The wind had risen, causing Charlotte to tug her cloak closer.

“Dead drunk’s more like.” Edward dismounted, strode to the tollhouse door, and knocked.

The door jerked open. A huge hand grasped his shoulder, dragging him inside.

“Edward!” Charlotte dropped the reins, peeled her aching leg from around the horn of the sidesaddle, and slid to the ground. She must get to Edward. As her boots hit the dirt, two men appeared from nowhere.

“Ha, got ya!” They grabbed her arms, their rough fingers digging painfully into her flesh.

Terror shot through her veins, stopping her breath in her throat. Still, she managed to pull back and forth, trying to break free. No use. Their big hands clamped down on her like a vise as they hustled her toward the toll booth.

“Edward! Help! Someone, help!” Charlotte shrieked as they dragged her toward the building. Dear Lord, they must be highwaymen. She had heard sickening stories about the dangerous criminals who roamed the roads, preying on unlucky travelers. Her stomach twisted.

At the threshold they loosened their grip to get her through the door. Charlotte swung around and raked her fingernails down one man’s face.

He bellowed and pushed her away, into the house.

She wheeled toward the other man, bent on a similar attack, but stopped, shocked at the tableau before her.

The flickering light of the hearth revealed a large man holding Edward’s head down on a crude plank table, a pistol pressed against his temple. The tollkeeper in his nightshirt and cap, eyes wide, face pale, stood in front of the fire, staring at the scene. To the left of the table stood her father.

Only Seduction Will Do–Cover Reveal on February 15

The fourth book of my Georgian House of Pleasure series, Only Seduction Will Do, is set to have its cover revealed next Thursday, February 15.  Until then, this is all I’ve got.

Not exactly inspiring, is it?  But the one that’s coming, the real cover, is very sexy and seductive, very indicative of its heroine, Alethea Forsythe.

Here’s the blurb for the book. See what you think:

And as their unexpected connection between silken sheets is tested by jealousy and misfortune, Jack must decide where honor ends…and true passion begins . .

Only Seduction Will Do is available for pre-order on Amazon.

Here’s a painting that served as an inspiration for one scene in the book where Alethea is contemplating how to seduce her new husband into her bed.

The sight of a woman’s leg was terribly scandalous during this period. 🙂

And here is my idea of what Jack Fitzwilliam, the Earl of Manning, the book’s hero, looks like. ( I’m sure you remember this actor from Royal Pains or The West Wing!)

You can see some more of the images I put together while writing the book here, on my Pinterest board for Only Seduction Will Do.

You can also help spread the word about the cover reveal next week. I’ve got a Thunderclap campaign running to broadcast the cover reveal on the 15th.  I’ve got 70 supporters at the moment, but I have to have 100 before the 15th in order for the campaign to be sent out. If you could please help me get to 100, I’d really appreciate it.  If you haven’t already supported the campaign, just click on this Thunderclap link, then agree to have my message sent via your Twitter or Facebook account on the 15th.

And here’s an exclusive excerpt from Only Seduction Will Do, to whet your appetite a little.

EXCERPT:

Miss Forsythe stood, demure for possibly the first time in her life, her gaze lowered, her hands clasped primly in front of her. The picture of an obedient woman. And as false as a Newgate penny, he’d be bound.

“I am certain anything Miss Forsythe has to say to me could be spoken in your presence, Braeton.” He shot a look of desperation at the earl. Had the girl conceived some sort of trap to spring on him, compromise him into marrying her? Jack stiffened, then for the first time since he had arrived, he relaxed. Even though unannounced, he was already betrothed. Miss Carlton had now saved him, it seemed. Quid pro quo.

“I believe my cousin wishes to ask a boon of you, Manning.” Braeton’s mouth twisted as though he’d bitten into a lemon. “I am aware of the nature of the request and agree she would want privacy to ask it. I won’t be far if you should need me.” Braeton bowed curtly and left.

More confused than ever, Jack turned his attention back to Miss Forsythe, who swayed slightly from side to side, fidgeting with a lace handkerchief she’d produced from somewhere. Did she expect their conversation to lead to tears?

“Won’t you please have seat, Lord Manning?” Miss Forsythe indicated the chair nearest the fire. She seated herself opposite him. Perched seemed a better word, on the edge of the brown leather chair. “I do thank you so much for attending me at such an inconvenient time.”

“No inconvenience in the least, Miss Forsythe,” Jack said waving a hand of dismissal. He settled back into the chair. “How may I be of service to you?”

She gripped her lace-edged handkerchief in one hand, the other clenched on the chair’s arm. Raising her chin, her deep blue eyes boring into his, she swallowed hard. “Would you marry me, Lord Manning?”

The outrageousness of the question itself warred with the astounding fact that a woman had the boldness to ask it. He’d certainly been right about Miss Forsythe’s distinctly non-ladylike manner.

As he paused, stunned quite speechless, her face had turned red, a flush that started at her ample breasts and continued to her bright red hairline. She bit her lips, then took a deep breath. “I know this is an exceptional request, my lord, and”—she stared at her lap, her hands shaking—“most forward for a woman to even ask it.” She glanced up at him, her eyes suddenly pleading. “However, my circumstances dictate desperate measures be taken.”

Cautiously, Jack eased forward in his chair. He’d recovered from the broadside hit she’d scored, but didn’t want to give the woman cause for hope. “I am not unaware of the honor you do me, Miss Forsythe, to think I might be able to aid you in your plight. But are things so very extreme? Can the circumstances be remedied only by your marriage to me? Or is there some other, less drastic avenue that may be undertaken to resolve it?”

She let out her breath with a forceful whoosh and her color subsided somewhat.

He was not unaware of the great deal of courage it had taken for the woman to propose to him. His estimation of Miss Forsythe rose, even as he cringed from the idea of marrying her. Not that she wasn’t comely. Rather the reverse. If only she didn’t remind him so much of his sister.

“I fear the only remedy is marriage, my lord, although I will confess it was my choice to ask you.” She looked at him frankly, as though a Rubicon had been crossed.

“I am flattered, Miss Forsythe.” Not really so much flattered as feeling trapped.

Serenity by Daryl Devore

This is the 8th or 9th blog post I’ve written today and it is only 12:35. I have a release and there is a lot of promotion to do for one of those. The post for fabulous Jenna Jaxon’s blog is my next post and my brain has refused to come up with a topic.

I have sent out a character interview, and a writer’s post about settings in a story and another about taglines and so on, but now I sit and stare at my screen.

After 10 minutes of nothing coming to mind, I did what every good writer does – called up my favourite search engine – DuckDuckGo. DuckDuckGo doesn’t track your searches like some other massive search engine sites, so I prefer to use it.

I asked for – blog post ideas for writers. All the standards came up –

Where do your characters come from? Do you draw on real life? Do you create character profiles?

Talk about the first piece you wrote. If possible, share it on your blog!

When did you know you wanted to become a writer? Talk about the moment you thought writing was something to do seriously.

What advice do you have for aspiring authors? Share the lessons you have learned.

Been there. Done that.

Then I remembered readers like to know a bit of a writer’s real life. This past weekend, I sat down with our scanner and a pile of old photograph albums. What an amazing trip down memory lane.

The first year I taught, I was in an outport in the east coast province of Newfoundland. Needless to say, winter was a shock to someone from Southern Ontario.

Then I opened up the photo album that held pictures of a couple of Christmases my family and I spent down in the Cayman Islands. Fond memories. The picture is my daughter, 8, discovering the joys of snorkelling in the ocean. The picture of her failing to water ski is hilarious, but I don’t want to embarrass her.

But this 3rd picture caught my attention. It brought a calmness to my heart. I’ve labelled it Serenity. I don’t remember where I took the photo – other than it was in Florida. It is now the wallpaper picture on my laptop and when I boot it up – there it is and I have the same reaction. So, take a moment, gaze at the photo and inhale and exhale deeply and maybe you can shrug a bit of the heaviness of life and have a moment of serenity.

What has any of this to do with my latest book – absolutely nothing. It is just there for you to enjoy.

Excerpt from Two Truths and A Lie from the Lawbreakers Box Set

Well, I’d hoped to see Lover Boy again, but I didn’t expect it to be across a poker table in Monte Carlo.

It was late afternoon and I’d finished what I came to Monte Carlo to do, which meant the emerald necklace was safely hidden in the lining of my purse. It was an easy job. The owner of the necklace wanted me to steal it. I’m guessing it’d be an insurance fraud thing. The necklace wasn’t real as they had previously sold off the real stones then substituted some fake ones. I didn’t care what they did as long as I got paid. Judgement free zone.

But now, I needed to distance myself from a certain overweight, older housekeeping employee – who didn’t actually exist – so I decided to go play some poker. Shifting personas from housekeeper to rich socialite was easy, ditch the horrendously ugly, ill-fitting uniform to a sleek, short Katherine Hill dress, add a pair of lovely open-toed stilettos, change wig and colored contacts and – ta da – socialite.

The Casino’s spectacular poker room was quiet when I entered. There were several tables, but only one had players. The ornate décor of the room reminded me of a palace. I’d researched it and knew exactly what I was walking into. I didn’t want to pull some doofus thing and shout, “Holy shit! This place is fabulous.” Instead, with great calmness and sophistication, I entered, casually glanced around, headed to the only table with players, sat down, looked up and almost peed my pants.

Of all the casinos, in all the towns in all the world, he’s sitting at the same poker table. Yes, I’d paraphrased Bogart.

Southern Comfort Food ~ Spinach and Mushroom Quiche

Welcome back to Southern Comfort Food!

Sorry I’ve been absent the past couple of weeks but with the beginning of a new semester and seeing both my daughters either off to a new job or back to college (both are now about 1,000 miles away from home–in opposite directions), plus writing deadlines, I’ve not been cooking much at all. Eating out or eating quick meals will only get you so far, so this morning I decided to return to one of my go-to comfort foods: quiche.

I learned to make quiche while I was in grad school, at a friend’s house because I was renting a room elsewhere and had no kitchen.

I’ve found quiche to be a great, nourishing meal for any time of the day. Now I usually eat it for breakfast. Because of my gluten sensitivity, I usually make mine crustless, so it comes out almost as a frittata. That way it’s also almost pure protein.

Spinach and Mushroom Quiche

Ingredients:

4 large or 5 small eggs, beaten

3/4 cups half & half or cream

1 1/2 cups shredded cheese (you can use whatever cheese you like–I usually use a Mexican blend because I find it more flavorful. Today’s quiche is a blend of Mexican and Italian)

1/2 package frozen spinach, thawed and drained well. (You want to squeeze all the water out of it or your quiche will be watery)

1 can mushrooms, drained

1 prepared 8″ pie crust (if desired)

Salt and pepper to taste

Instructions:

Pre-heat oven to 400 degrees.

In a large bowl mix eggs and half and half (when I was a poor college student I would substitute milk when I couldn’t afford the half and half) and beat well.

Add cheese and mix well.

Add spinach and mix.

Add mushrooms, salt and pepper, and mix.

Spray cooking spray on bottom and sides of an 8″ pie pan (or use prepared pie crust). Pour filling into pan.

Bake for 35-40 minutes.

Enjoy!

Come back next week for another recipe full of down-home southern comfort. 🙂
