Release Day Party for Much Ado About A Widow–Part 1

It’s finally here!

Release Day for Much Ado About A Widow!

I am so excited for this 4th book of The Widows’ Club! Georgie and Rob’s story has been one of my very favorites to write. It’s a romantic comedy adventure that I hope everyone will enjoy!

Lady Georgina Kirkpatrick defied her family, jilted her fiancé, and married the man she loved. But when her husband died at Waterloo, she was delivered right back into her father’s power . . .

Victory is sweet—but England’s triumph was Georgie’s rout. Now that she’s widowed, the loathsome marriage her father first arranged has simply been renegotiated. With neither money nor rights, and nowhere to flee, all she can do is cherish her last weeks of freedom. . . . Until a band of ruffians overtake her carriage and kidnap her. When she escapes in seaside Brighton and encounters her brother’s rather wild friend, Lord St. Just—whom she suspects aspires to be a pirate—she’s prepared to entertain more of his adventurous suggestions than usual . . .

St. Just knows his mind and his duty, and he loves a challenge. Helping a fair lady make her farewells to hoodlums suits his talents well. Within the hour he has Georgie, her lady’s maid—and her little dog too—sailing for his castle in Cornwall. Meanwhile, the lady’s entire family, her kidnappers, and her scheming intended are in pursuit. But as he and the indomitable Georgie grow closer, he begins to suspect that together they will prove a match for them all . . .

EXCERPT:

A low whimpering slowly brought Georgie back to the edge of consciousness. Blinking, she gazed about the carriage. Clara had fallen asleep as well, but Lulu had her ears raised. Growling softly, the spaniel padded across the tufted leather seat and raised her paws to rest on the edge of the window. Her growls changed to barking, and Georgie yawned, then slid over to her.

“What is all this fuss about, Lulu? You can’t need to go out again so soon.” Peering over the dog’s head, Georgie looked at her father’s outrider cantering beside the carriage.

“Goodness.” The maid stretched and stifled a yawn. “I must have fallen asleep.”

“That’s quite all right.” Georgie’s attention was fixed on the rider. “Look at the man riding alongside us, Clara.”

The maid glanced out the window and shrugged. “What about him?”

“He’s not one of my father’s outriders.” Frowning as she pressed her face against the cold window pane, Georgie moved her head this way and that, seeking a better look.

“He’s not?” Clara slid over to gaze out the window as well. “Then who is he?”

“He’s the man I told you about, the one with the flattened nose who was watching me in the inn yard.” Georgie bounced over to the other side of the carriage, panic rising at the sight of another unfamiliar outrider. “This one too. Folger!” She leaped to her feet and banged on the trap. “Folger! Who are these men? What is going on?”

The chilling silence that ensued was punctuated by the high crack of a whip. The carriage shot forward, throwing Georgie back into her seat, where she narrowly missed Lulu, who was barking wildly.

“What’s happening, my lady?” Eyes wide and wild, Clara clutched her arm.

Georgie’s composure slipped, and dread threatened to engulf her, but she took a deep breath to steady herself and announced, “I am very much afraid we are being kidnapped.”

To start off the celebration, I’ll be giving away a signed copy of To Woo A Wicked Widow, Book 1 of The Widows’ Club series, to one commenter who tells me their favorite romantic comedy movie.

Look for more posts and giveaways during the day!

Weekend Writing Warriors ~ 12/29/19 Much Ado About A Widow ~ In Which Lulu Bares Her Teeth

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors!

I’ve switched to my next big release in late December, Book 4 of The Widows’ Club series, Much Ado About A Widow! If you’ve been keeping up with my widows over the past year or so, this book is Georgie’s story–a true romantic comedy adventure romance. Of course, nothing else would do for the heroine, Lady Georgina Kirkpatrick!

BLURB:

But as he and the indomitable Georgie grow closer, he begins to suspect that together they will prove a match for them all . . .

I started my snippets a good way into the story. Lady Georgina, on the way back to her father’s house to an arranged marriage with a man she’s already jilted once, is kidnapped. She manages to escape and runs straight into the arms of her brother’s friend, Robin, Marquess of St. Just. who tries to persuade her to sail with him to his home in Cornwall, to which Georgie answers with a resounding “No.” Rob is still fearful for her safety and enacts his plan. He locks Georgie in the cabin and hurries off on an errand, leaving Georgie to fume. Rob returns to the ship and sets sail with Georgie, Clara and Lulu. And Georgie discovers she is no sailor. After a night of being violently seasick, she is appalled when Rob appears with food in hand.

We are in now in Georgie’s POV .

Some portions of this snippet may be changed from the book’s regular format (today’s is very wonky) to allow for WWW’s 10 line requirement.

SNIPPET:

Lulu

“I see you are awake, my lady,” and as if invited, Rob stepped briskly into the cabin.

“Oh, no, my lord,” swiftly, Clara moved in front of him, barring further entry, “you cannot come in here–” the maid held up a finger as she paused to yawn–“it would ruin Lady Georgina’s reputation.”

St. Just eyed the sleepy woman, then trained his gaze on Georgie and said, “I won’t tell if you won’t.”

Raising her head to upbraid his insolence, Georgie caught a whiff of the hot soup he carried, and her protest turned to a groan; she clenched her teeth and screwed her eyes shut, willing her body to behave. If she cast up her accounts in front of the marquess she would die of shame–dying might just be her best option in any case.

He set the tray on the table and turned to Clara. “I’ve dealt with seasickness before; leave the lady’s care to me, and I’ll have her shipshape in no time.”

“I cannot do that, my lord—” the maid stopped, a huge yawn interrupting her objection.

“You’ll be asleep as soon as I leave the room Clara; then who will be left to tend to Lady Georgina–the dog?”

Lulu bared her teeth at him.

SNIPPET:

The Justine

The cabin door swung open, revealing Lord St. Just, an impossibly broad grin on his face saying, “Wait until I tell you what my men and I just did.”

“You don’t have to tell me, my lord, I already know.” Georgie glared at him and held Lulu tighter–the little animal was shaking, and Georgie was sure if she loosened her grip Lulu would launch herself at the unwary marquess; serve him right too.

“You do?” He frowned and cocked his head, which made him look like a puzzled puppy–Lulu looked just like that whenever she was unhappy–but what did he have to be unhappy about? He was the one who had kidnapped her.

“You have set sail, my lord, with me and my maid aboard against our wills; many sensible people call that kidnapping.” She’d always known this man was a pirate, in fact, she’d told her brother so. She handed Lulu to Clara before the dog could leap out of her arms and tear at his lordship’s throat–if anyone was going to attack the marquess, it would be Georgie herself; plant him a facer and see how he liked being set upon.

“Oh, yes, we had to put out or miss the evening tide,” the impossible man’s grin had returned, showing many straight, white teeth, “but we did manage to steal your trunks, Lady Georgina–if you will consider yourself abducted again, at least rejoice in the fact that you will have clean linen throughout the ordeal.”

“On that point, my lady, I fear we must disagree, so I will pen a brief note to Brack, informing him of the change in plan—”

“Aha!” Lady Georgina stepped toward him, an accusing finger pointed at his chest saying, “I knew the two of you had concocted a plan.”

“Your brother may have done, and if so, I will take full responsibility for spoiling it,” he grinned at the outraged woman, her cheeks redder than a hot poker, “but I believe he will agree my idea is the better one, or at least safer under the circumstances–because if your brother didn’t have you kidnapped, I would very much like to find out who did and before you fall into their hands again.”

“My brother?” Lady Georgina stopped as if she’d walked into a wall, her face ashen. “You think Jemmy arranged to kidnap me?”

“We’ll know when we receive a letter from him in a week or so–” taking advantage of her shocked state, Rob turned the key in the lock then withdrew it, leaving the door ajar–“I’ll write to him this instant, tell him our plans to sail to Cornwall, and ask him to come fetch you, your maid, and your dog post haste,” and with nimble feet, Rob slipped through the door and shut it with a bang just as Lady Georgina slammed her hand against the smooth teak panel.

“Wretch! I give you my oath I will make you regret this.”

We are in Rob’s POV now.

Some portions of this snippet may be changed from the book’s regular format to allow for WWW’s 10 line requirement.

SNIPPET:

It struck him as unwise to send her onward to her father’s estate. It could very well lead her into danger or doom her to a disastrous marriage and might indeed thwart the plans and wishes of the friend who’d been a steadfast part of his life for more than ten years–that reason, more than the others, gave him pause. If he unwittingly foiled Brack’s plans, he’d never forgive himself.

Decision reached; now to inform the damsel who didn’t even think she was in distress.

“I fear I cannot, in good conscience, allow you to willingly march into danger, Lady Georgina; I have a duty to your brother to keep you safe until such time as he can advise me of his plans for your welfare.” Carefully, trying not to give away his actions, Rob backed toward the doorway; he wasn’t completely certain what the lady was capable of, but he’d wager that she’d try to bash him over the head with the poker if given the opportunity. Another step and he bumped into the cabin door. “Your brother wrote to me asking for my assistance; therefore I must render it.”

“And I am telling you the only assistance I require is in continuing our journey to Blackham.” Her green eyes flashed like emeralds on fire.

Weekend Writing Warriors ~ 12/01/19 Much Ado About A Widow ~ Not A Predictable Lady

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors!

She manages to escape and runs straight into the arms of her brother’s friend, Robin, Marquess of St. Just. She’s more than distrustful of Rob, having convinced herself the young man is wild and has ambitions to become a pirate. But beggars can’t be choosers, so she enlists his aid. He’s rowed her out to his ship and they have settled down to get to the bottom of things. After she relates her story, she asks for the loan of a carriage, but St. Just says he doesn’t have one, he’s only in Portsmouth for the day. He manages to convince Georgie that going to an inn for the night is a very bad idea and this week comes up with an alternative plan: Sail with him to his home in Cornwell. Georgie’s response follows.

We are in Rob’s POV now and he speaks first.

Some portions of this snippet may be changed from the book’s regular format to allow for WWW’s 10 line requirement.

SNIPPET:

The Justine

“Of course I do not wish to marry Lord Travers, who is without a doubt the most loathsome creature to whom I have ever been introduced, and that includes Lord Fernley, who is loathsome, but who does seem to have a few redeeming qualities–he plays whist very well, anyway”—Lady Georgina shook her head and her straggling curls bobbed. “Lord Travers has made me uncomfortable ever since I met him,” she said, looking Rob squarely in the face, “which does not, however, mean that I will not marry him.”

A far cry from the answer he’d expected–Lady Georgina was not a predictable lady at all. “But if you have no affection for him, why marry him? Surely there are other gentlemen of the ton who are just as eligible and not as disagreeable as Travers.”

“You know Lord Travers then, my lord?”

“I do, although mostly by reputation; I do not run in the same circles as he.” Rob wouldn’t give a hot ha’penny for Travers’s usual companions–not since the Hellfire Club had a more profligate group of gentlemen assembled. “I daresay he would not have been the choice most fathers would arrange for their daughters.”

“My father is definitely not as most fathers are.”
