Happy Release Day for The Christmas Pact!

HAPPY RELEASE DAY!

The Christmas Pact, my most recent Christmas novella, releases today! Go grab your copy here!

You may recall that The Christmas Pact is an expansion of a flash fiction piece I wrote about thirteen years ago called The Kissing Tree in my anthology All Wrapped Up. It’s two scenes, first two children making a marriage pact in the snowy woods the day after Christmas, the second scene is years later as the same couple returns to the snowy woods. The Christmas Pact also gives you all the really good stuff in-between! Here’s the blurb:

When Henrietta Price accidentally pummels a gentleman with a snowball, her instant mortification turns to delight when she discovers the young man is none other than her childhood best friend, Charlie. Though they haven’t seen each other in ten years, he still has the same vivid blue eyes, wicked laugh, and caring nature she remembers so well. Once he’d even vowed—at ten-years-old—to marry her, if necessary, to save her from a life of spinsterhood. And although she’s considering another man’s proposal, she can’t quite keep that long-ago promise out of her head…

Charlie Newkirk hasn’t stopped thinking about Hen since she stole a kiss from him all those years ago.  Now he can scarcely believe the beautiful woman in front of him is the same girl whose braid he used to pull. Worse, he has no idea if she’s given her heart to the wealthy young marquess courting her or if she even remembers the promise he hopes to fulfill.

With their future happiness at stake, will Charlie be able to remind Henrietta of their Christmas pact and turn their childhood friendship into a newfound romance? Or will he forever remain just someone she used to know?

To celebrate this festive occasion, I’m giving away five (5) e-copies of The Christmas Pact to random commenters on this blog post. The winners will be selected Sunday night and announced on this blog on Monday, November 25.

The Christmas Pact is now available on Amazon for just .99! Celebrate its release by grabbing your e-copy today!

Will a childhood promise lead them to true romance?

With their future happiness at stake, will Charlie be able to remind Henrietta of their Christmas pact and turn their childhood friendship into a newfound romance? Or will he forever remain just someone she used to know?

I’m continuing today’s snippet from where I left off last week, at the beginning of chapter 2, with Henrietta and Charlie sitting down to catch up. Enjoy!

EXCERPT:

With both her brothers occupied, Henrietta turned her attention back to Charlie, amazement filling her once more.

The boy she remembered so well had turned into a most handsome gentleman. His face still retained some of the features from childhood—his eyes especially had not changed from the vivid blue she recalled so well—but the roundness of the boy’s face had gone, leaving him with a leaner, almost chiseled look. A high brow and cheekbones, firm jaw, and broad shoulders made Charlie a gentleman ladies would look at more than once. Well, at least Henrietta was doing so. She blushed and glanced away.

“What brings you to London, Charlie? Or do you live here now?” So very odd not to know where he lived or what he did. “Are your parents well?”

And a little bit more…

He smiled at her flurry of questions. “Let me answer in the reverse order. Mother and Father are well indeed.” He ticked that off on one of his fingers. “I live in London only while Parliament is in session. My uncle managed to get me into the House of Commons. I’m the MP for our old district in Suffolk.”

“But Parliament isn’t in session now, is it? It’s two days ’til Christmas.”

“No, they’ve adjourned for the holiday, but I’ve got a special meeting I’m attending tomorrow, and that answers your first question, why I’m in town.” He smiled at her. “Afterward, I’ll go back to Haverhill to spend the New Year with my family.”

“Oh, Charlie, that’s splendid news. About being a Member of Parliament, I mean.” Henrietta was pleased beyond words. She’d always known Charlie would do well in the world. He’d been very smart, studying first with his father and later with a tutor.

“But now tell me about you, Hen.” He gazed into her eyes until she had to look away. A warmth she couldn’t explain had crept into her chest. “What have you been doing all these years since you went away?”

“There is a frightful lot to tell, Charlie.” Her nose and fingers were going numb with the cold and wetness from being pummeled by snowballs. Henrietta rose to keep her feet from freezing. “Why don’t you come home to tea, and we can have a proper catch-up?”

EXCERPT:

“Charlie?” She searched his face, looking for the boy she’d grown up with. Surely it couldn’t be…

“Mr. Charles Newkirk, yes.” He frowned, peering down at her, then slowly his eyes widened. “Henrietta?”

“My gracious.” Henrietta staggered backward, and he caught her arm again. “Charlie!” Without thought, she launched herself at him, threw her arms around his neck and hugged him tight.

And a little bit more…

He returned the hug then gently released her. “How wonderful to see you again, Lady Henrietta.” His gaze slid to the two boys gawking at them. “Or are you married now, my lady?”

Henrietta followed his gaze and shook her head, laughing. “These are my younger brothers. George, Henry, say hello to a very dear friend of mine, Mr. Charles Newkirk.”

“Hello.” The pair spoke in unison, as they were wont to do.

“Good morning, Master George, Master Henry.” Charlie stared at them, frowning. “They weren’t—”

“No, they were born after we left Haverhill.” Henrietta took his arm, almost afraid he would disappear if she didn’t keep him beside her. Imagine it being Charlie Newkirk, after all these years!

“After your father inherited the title.”

Nodding, Henrietta steered them to the bench the boys had used to ambush her. “Why don’t you boys build a snowman while I speak to Mr. Newkirk for a moment?”

Weekend Writing Warriors ~ 11/03/2024 ~ The Christmas Pact~ The Snowball

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors !

I’m starting today’s snippet at the beginning of chapter 2, with a snowball fight between Lady Henrietta Price and her two brothers. (This scene makes me wish for snow at Christmas again!) Enjoy!

EXCERPT:

Splat!

Snow exploded all over her brother, obscuring his expression, which Henrietta suspected was abject surprise. “Caught you out, Georgie.”

Stalwart, George scrubbed the icy mess from his face and stuck his tongue out at Henrietta and shrieked, “No fair!”

“How is scoring a spectacular hit on someone during a snowball fight ‘no fair,’ Georgie?” Not waiting for a reply, Henrietta dropped down again, hurriedly scooping snow together before George or, more likely Henry, could retaliate.

“Come on, George, we have to get her while she’s busy making her weapons.”

She peeked up at the pair, who were advancing on her at an alarming rate. Henrietta packed the snow as best she could, drew back her arm, and flung the rather large snowball with terrific speed. Unfortunately, in her haste, her aim was badly off.

The snowball sailed past the boys, over the wrought iron fence that surrounded the park, and hit the tall black hat of a gentleman passing by.

And a little bit more…

“Oh drat!” was all Henrietta could get out before the boys landed their snowballs with much better accuracy. George’s hit her squarely in the chest, showering snow all over her new blue pelisse. Henry, however, had deadlier aim, striking her right between the eyes.

Henrietta staggered backward, blinded by the icy particles. Her feet slipped out from under her, and she sat down hard on the cold ground, her head spinning.

“Hen… Henrietta!” The boys’ shrieks grew closer until their hands were on her, patting her cheeks. “Are you all right, Henrietta?”

“Good grief, are you all right?”

That voice didn’t belong to the boys at all.

Shaking her head to clear it, Henrietta wiped the snow from her face and peered up at the speaker, a gentleman in a tall beaver hat with snow sticking to the brim. The man she’d pummeled with her snowball, no doubt. Oh, but there’d be the devil to pay for her morning of fun. “Yes, I believe I’m all in one piece, thank you.”

“Thank goodness. Here,” he grasped her hand, “allow me to help you up.”

Not that she had any choice in the matter.

The gentleman put his other arm around her shoulders and lifted her as though she were a mere feather, setting her on her feet before she could even blink.

“Thank you, sir.” She wobbled, and his grip increased, steadying her until she was able to stand without swaying. “You are most kind, considering I should be the one apologizing to you. I am dreadfully sorry to have hit you…” At last, she managed to look the gentleman in the face, “or rather your hat.”

“Think nothing of it, ma’am.” His wide smile reminded her of someone. His voice, too, although it was deeper than she remembered…

“Charlie?”

Weekend Writing Warriors ~ 10/20/2024 ~ Unmask Me My Love ~ An Unexpected Visitor

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors !

I know I’ve been MIA for a while now–life was too much with me, I’m afraid. But I’m back now with a brand new romance just released last week: Unmask Me My Love, book 3 of The Matchmaker’s Ball series! This was previously known as Heart of Delight, and with the addition of a little steam here and there, I think it’s still delightful. Hope you enjoy!

Unmask Me My Love

BLURB:

He’ll do anything for the woman he loves…except tell the truth.

Gabriella d’Aventure is a young woman on a mission. She has come to England as a lady’s maid in single-minded pursuit of the Duke of Rother. When she meets Horace Carpenter, valet to a marquess, she is delighted to enlist his aid in gaining her heart’s desire: a meeting with the duke. But will her growing feelings for the handsome valet interfere with her plans for Rother?

The eccentric Marquess of Halford, Hal to his friends, is fed up with the demands of Society, especially his father’s decree that he marry this Season. To that end, Hal hides out at Lady Hamilton’s ball, refusing to choose a bride. However, when a breathtaking young woman intrudes on his solitude, Hal is instantly captivated and rashly introduces himself as his valet and offers his help. Despite his growing fear about the true motive behind Gabriella’s quest to meet the duke, Hal devises a plan to gain her an audience with him, all the while praying his deception won’t ruin his chances of winning her love.

I’m starting my snippet at the end of Chapter 1. Hal, the Marquess of Halford, being bored at Lady Hamilton’s ball, has retreated to the balcony overlooking the dance floor. He’s just been speaking with his cousin, but she’s just left him and Hal, still disillusioned with the prospect of having to select a bride, is brooding as he watches the dancing. Enjoy!

EXCERPT:

Hal smiled, moved back to his spot in front of the balcony rail, and settled on the floor once more. Best steel himself to go down and do his duty by all the young ladies. When had his life become so filled with obligation?

“Ah.”

Hal shook his head. “What have you forgott—” He twisted his head toward the doorway and froze.

The young lady who stood before him was definitely not Lady Celinda Grantham. Medium height, with golden brown hair, a face fresh as cream, and perfectly bowed lips, she would’ve been exceptional even without the startling glass-green eyes. Attired in an unremarkable brown dress, she could not be one of Lady Hamilton’s guests, although, with her beauty, she certainly should’ve been.

And a little bit more…

“Oh, pardonnez-moi, monsieur.”

What was this woman doing here? “Bonsoir, mademoiselle,” Hal said, rising from the floor to bow. He hoped she would speak again. Her lilting, vibrant voice would haunt his dreams.

Bonsoir, monsieur.” She wrinkled her petite nose. “You are English, oui?”

“I am. My French is abominable, but I hoped to impress you with what I remember of it.” Hal smiled. He’d never got the hang of languages other than his own.

The girl laughed, tossing her head. “You have a good accent for an Englishman.”

“Thank you.”

She glanced from the balcony rail to the doorway and bit her lip.

“Is there some way I may be of service to you, Mademoiselle…?” He must know the name of this beautiful creature.

“D’Aventure,” she said, with a small but graceful curtsy. “Gabriella Veronique Marie d’Aventure. Mais, non. I am fine, monsieur.” Again, she slid her gaze toward the balcony railing.

Well, he had a name, at least. Better than complete ignorance. “Have you come, perhaps, to watch the dancing?”

She nodded, keeping her attention on him. “Yes, my lady does not require me at the moment, so I thought it would be nice to see how the English dance.” Her smile quite took his breath away. “May I?”

“Please.” Hal stepped back and motioned her in front of him.

She moved like air on water, seeming to glide without touching the planked floor. When she reached the railing, she studied the dancers, now engaged in a country dance. “They are very beautiful, the English ladies, in their best gowns.” A glance at him, and her smile broadened. “Not as beautiful as the great French ladies of the royal court, of course, but their gowns are well made.” She giggled. “Perhaps they have a French modiste.”

Release Day for Unmask Me My Love!

HAPPY RELEASE DAY!

Unmask Me My Love, book 3 in The Matchmaker’s Ball  series, releases today! Go grab your copy here!

If you remember, The Matchmaker’s Ball series is a reboot of a sweet series I published 10+ years ago called Handful of Hearts. Unmask Me My Love is the reboot of Heart of Delight, a quirky sort of Cinderella story with some really quirky characters.

In this reboot, I’ve not only added some steamy love scenes, but also a rather nasty character gets their comeuppance, which tickled both my editor and me.

The premise for this book dates back to 2009 when I was writing my very first book, Time Enough to Love. As I wrote that book (and the first draft took me six months) I kept having ideas for other books and of course, I kept a list of all those ideas. Over the years a lot of them have come to be written. The idea of a Cinderella-esque story took shape and this is how that little blurb originally read:

MASQUERADE: Penniless companion to Countess (aunt) goes to masquerade ball, eligible Duke falls in love with her; she leaves; he seeks her in society, can’t find her; about to marry another, discovers her?

Quite different from the current blurb, but the kernel of it is still there:

Despite his growing fear about the true motive behind Gabriella’s quest to meet the duke, Hal devises a plain to her gain an audience with him, all the while praying his deception won’t ruin his chances of winning her love.

So instead of being at a masquerade ball, the marquess is in disguise as his valet, which I quite liked. I love quirky characters and the Marquess of Halford is one of my favorites!

To celebrate this auspicious occasion, I’m giving away a signed print copy of Unmask Me My Love, and a $20 Amazon gift card to random commenters on this blog post.

Weekend Writing Warriors ~ 09/22/2024 ~ 10 Things I Hate About the Earl~ “Prove it!”

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors !

10 Things I Hate About the Earl

BLURB:

Between love and hate there is a pencil-thin line to walk…

Miss Katherine Locke is irked to start her third Season dancing with the disagreeable Lord Haversham, her brother’s friend and her own arch enemy. After a particularly odious run-in with the earl, Kate declares she hates everything about the man. When her brother challenges her to come up with even ten things she doesn’t like about Haversham, a gleeful Kate is itching to put quill to paper to point out everything she finds wrong with the man. Unexpectedly, she finds the task harder than she thought because she keeps remembering things she secretly likes about the gentleman instead. Frustrated, Kate shoves the list in a drawer, determined to stop thinking about Haversham. But can she?

Marcus, Lord Haversham, is in a tight pinch. His estates are failing and, worse, he’s just lost three thousand pounds to his best friend, Lord Ainsley. Ainsley’s solution: have Marcus marry his shrewish sister, and he’ll cancel his gambling debt plus give him ten thousand pounds for her dowry. With nowhere else to turn, Marcus agrees, praying he can keep word of the wager from Miss Locke long enough to charm her into marrying him.

When Marcus discovers Kate’s list however, he can’t keep himself from trying to show her how wrong she is about him. But in the process, will he be able to avoid falling in love with the stubborn woman?

I’m very excited to see what you think of my newest book in The Matchmaker’s Ball series. Meet Miss Katherine Locke–a young lady going into her third Season with few options for matrimony because of her shrewish nature. Her brother has a notion that she should marry his best friend. I’ve skipped ahead again.

EXCERPT:

“I have no desire to become affianced to either Bertie or Lord Haversham. Bertie would bore me to tears before the banns could be read, and there are no words to describe what I feel about Lord Haversham.”

“Then find some, my dear,” her brother put his cup into its saucer, “tell me why you are so set against Marcus.”

Well, she would put a stop to her brother’s nonsense this moment. “Because I hate everything about the man, Nathan. I know he’s your best friend and has been for years, but I have disliked him ever since you brought him home–I’ve made no bones about it before, and I make none now.”

A smile played around Nathan’s lips, and he leaned back in his chair. “Oh, surely that cannot be true, Kate–you hate everything about Haversham?”

“Yes, I do.”

“Prove it.”

And a little bit more…

Bewildered, she frowned at him. “What do you mean, prove it?”

“Make a list for me.”

“I beg your pardon?” Her brother must’ve woken up with addled brains this morning.

“Make a list… I’ll make it easy for you. Make a list of just ten things you hate about Marcus.”

“Why would I do that?” Suddenly nervous, Kate pushed her breakfast around her plate, her appetite vanished.

“As a wager.” Nathan’s eyes flashed the challenge at her. “You list ten things you hate about my friend—with an explanation of each—and I will cease to suggest you should consider marrying him.”

Now that was a wager she could get behind. Kate opened her mouth to accept then stopped, the memory of losing the wager over Calabree—and its penalty—still fresh in her mind. “And if I cannot come up with ten things I hate about him?” Fat chance of that, but best to make all the terms clear.

“Then you must accompany Lord Haversham on an outing of my choice one afternoon.”

On the verge of saying, “Absolutely not,” she paused to reconsider. What did she have to lose? She could recite all the things she hated about Lord Haversham like a litany. On the other hand, she had much to gain when she won, for she would not have to put up with her brother’s incessant nagging about her marrying the earl. If half an hour’s scribbling would put an end to that torture, she’d gladly take that wager. “Done.” She picked up her fork and stabbed the sausage once more. “When would you like me to give you the list?”

“By this afternoon should be sufficient.” Her brother’s face was inscrutable.

Did he truly think she couldn’t come up with a mere ten things she loathed about Lord Haversham? He obviously hadn’t been listening to her conversation for the past seven years. His loss now. Kate drained her tea, set the cup back in its saucer, and rose. “I’ll bring it to you before teatime, if that’s agreeable?”

“Absolutely.” Nathan stood, a pucker to his lips. “Good luck.”

With a laugh, Kate strode out of the room. She wasn’t going to need luck, just a good quill, a sharp knife, and a full inkpot.

Release Day for 10 Things I Hate About the Earl!

HAPPY RELEASE DAY!

10 Things I Hate About the Earl, book 2 in The Matchmaker’s Ball  series, releases today! Go grab your copy here!

If you remember, The Matchmaker’s Ball series is a reboot of a sweet series I published 10+ years ago called Handful of Hearts. 10 Things is the reboot of Heart of Desire, a fun Taming of the Shrew-esque story with some really wonderful banter between the hero and heroine. One of the best reviews the novella ever got said they wished the book was longer because they wanted to see more of Kate and Marcus’s courtship.

Well, now in the reboot, I’ve done that, giving the H/h several excursions in which to spar and fall in love. I’ve also given Marcus a new impetus to win Kate over: a list of things she hates about him. This idea took hold after I changed the title of the book. I was looking for something that hinted at the enemies to lovers trope, and I remembered the old movie 10 Things I Hate About You, a modern retelling of Taming of the Shrew. So I changed a couple of words and had that “Eureka!” moment when I decided to have Kate actually make a list–and let Marcus find it.

I have truly loved rewriting this story and I hope you love it as well. Those of you who read the original be ready for a lot more action–and a LOT more steam! Still, I think you will enjoy this version quite a lot.

If you are on TikTok, I just posted a video of the book’s birthday celebration. I’m @jennajaxon1 and you should find it pretty quickly. And the book will be coming out in print shortly and will be distributed wide by the end of the week.

To celebrate this auspicious occasion, I’m giving away a signed print copy of 10 Things I Hate About the Earl, and a $20 Amazon gift card to random commenters on this blog post.

I’ve skipped ahead just a bit to where Ainsley makes a rather shocking suggestion.

EXCERPT:

She really should’ve known better than to wager with her brother–his ability to assume a completely expressionless face when playing cards or placing bets had become extremely annoying. “No one could lose with good grace if they had to waltz with Lord Haversham for even five minutes. It is quite impossible to fathom. Even you, dear brother, would not take it well.”

“How fortunate then that I shall never be required to stand up with Haversham.” Nathan laughed, and Kate clenched her hands. Just because her brother fancied himself a great wit did not make it true.

“Well, mark my words, I will never undertake a wager again if the forfeit involves Lord Haversham.” Just saying the name was like biting into an unripe persimmon—it turned her mouth inside out.

Nathan watched her, rubbing his fingers over his watch fob and said, “You are in your third Season, Kate, you could do worse than Haversham, you know.”

And a little bit more…

“Worse than…” She stared at her brother, expecting devil’s horns to sprout from his dark, curly head. “How could anyone be worse than Marcus, Earl of Haversham?”

“You sound as though the man’s a scoundrel or a cad. He’s a good man, Kate, though he has have fallen on hard times at present. His father’s death affected him very deeply.” Nathan stared at her, frowning.

“I am sorry for his loss, but that doesn’t excuse—”

“He hadn’t expected to take on the mantle of responsibility for some years to come.” Her brother jumped to his friend’s defense. “By the time he got himself in hand, the estates had begun a downward slide. His uncle’s helping him take the reins of the family investments, so that should be all right. But Haversham himself is a good man. He’d make a good husband.”

“Do you seriously want me to marry him?” Kate’s jaw dropped in stupefaction then she grimaced and swallowed convulsively. “My mouth doesn’t even want to say the words.” That lemonade would’ve been welcome right about now. “I wouldn’t marry him if he were…were…” She cast about for something dire enough to drive her point home but was stymied. “There is no instance where I would consent to marry him.”

Her brother peered at her, amusement teasing a smile to his lips once more. “The lady doth protest too much, methinks.”

“Think what you will, as long as you get that notion out of your head.” Kate sniffed. “What gives you the idea Haversham has any interest in me anyway?” Dear God, had he actually spoken to Nathan about her? Offered for her in some fit of devilment? The idea made chills run down her arms, despite the warmth of the room. “He hasn’t said anything about me, has he?”

Nate bit back a laugh and steered her to an unoccupied corner. “No fear of that. He’d likely be as horrified as you at the notion. I seem to be the only one who thinks it a good match.”

“Thank goodness.” Relief swept through her as she eyed her brother askance. “You should be sent to Bedlam, dear brother, for even entertaining such an idea.”

Weekend Writing Warriors ~ 09/01/2024 ~ 10 Things I Hate About the Earl~ “The Bane of My Existence”

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors !

So this week I’m moving on to my current novella that’s up on pre-order on Amazon. It’s book two in The Matchmaker’s Ball series, called 10 Things I Hate About the Earl.

Trouble is, Kate hates the man with a passion! Enjoy! I’m beginning at the very beginning. 🙂

EXCERPT:

“Of all the students at Oxford, my brother had to befriend you?”

“He had you for a sister—his luck was due for a change.”

“Well, I wish mine would change. If I have to endure you for five more minutes, I will fall down in a dead faint just to get away from you.” Kate wanted to scream in frustration at her brother’s best friend, but the man was right. Any scandalous behavior could end with her compromised and married to him before the month was out. The Season had just begun. She refused to let it end in a single night with the man who’d been the bane of her life for years.

“Luck must be on your side tonight, as the dance has, mercifully, come to an end,” he said, dropping her hand as though it had burned him and offered his arm. “Shall I see you to your brother?”

And a little bit more…

“Lord, yes.” She barely touched his proffered arm. The less contact with him the better. “Nathan must see that I completed the dance with you.” She avoided his eyes. “Ah, there he is, talking to our cousin, Lady Celinda.”

“Do you think she will be slighted if I don’t ask her for the next dance? I am weary of having my toes stepped on, although she may have better dancing form than my last partner.” Lord Haversham didn’t smile, but his walnut brown eyes twinkled with merriment.

“I think she’ll be delighted to escape having a conversation with you about your antiquated views on the social graces.” Beyond caring who heard her, Kate allowed her voice to rise above the hubbub of conversation. “And if your poor sister isn’t allowed to waltz before she is married, you should be ashamed of yourself.”
