Weekend Writing Warriors ~ 5/10/20 To Woo A Wicked Widow ~ Beyond the Formalities

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors!

HAPPY MOTHER’S DAY!

Happy Mother’s Day to all my readers and writers! I hope your day is spent with those you love. For the first time in 19 years, I’m spending all day with my family, including breakfast  served in bed by mu daughters. Every Mother’s Day since 2002, I’ve been at graduation at the university where I worked. With the school switched to remote learning this semester, graduation is postponed until September. So I finally get to sleep in, eat breakfast in bed, and have my daughters and husband around me all day.

To begin May off fresh, last week I shifted to the first of my Widows’ Club books, To Woo A Wicked Widow, because all the e-books of the Widows’ Club series are on sale this month!

BLURB:

Lady Charlotte Cavendish is still the spirited girl who tried to elope in the name of love. That dream was thwarted by her father who trapped her into a loveless, passionless marriage. But now widowed, Charlotte is free to reenter the giddy world of the ton—and pursue her desires. For hardly your typical widow, she remains innocent to the pleasures of the flesh. Yet her life is finally her own, and she intends to keep it that way . . .

Nash, the twelfth Earl of Wrotham, is beguiled by Charlotte at first sight—and the feeling is mutual. When he receives her intriguing invitation to a house party, the marriage-minded lord plans to further their acquaintance. But even he cannot sway her aversion to matrimony, and only with great restraint does he resist her most tempting offer. For unbeknownst to Charlotte, the misadventures of the past are revisiting them both, and bedding her could cost him everything—or give him everything he ever wanted . . .

I began my snippets last week well into the book. Nash, the Earl of Wrotham, is in the midst of trying to stop a gang of robbers who are terrorizing the countryside. Lady Charlotte, with whom he is falling in love, has suddenly come to visit him at his house–a scandalous thing for a lady–even a widow–to do. This snippet picks up immediately after last week’s snip.

Some portions of this snippet may be changed from the book’s regular format to allow for WWW’s 10 line requirement.

EXCERPT:

“My lady, what a lovely surprise.” Nash rushed toward her and raised her hand to his mouth, letting his lips linger as he studied her face–what could have brought her here without a companion?

“I am so pleased to see you, my lord; I recently returned from London and wanted to call on you.” She stared back at him, eyes bright, smile wide, then squeezed the hand he still kissed–not as if to say, “Let go,” but rather as though…good Lord, was the woman flirting with him?

Taken aback by this possibility, Nash released her hand and bowed saying, “I am delighted to see you again as well, my lady; when I heard you had removed to London, I feared we would be deprived of the pleasure of your company for quite some time to come, so I am pleased to see that those fears were unfounded.”

Her brilliant smile went straight to his heart.

“Please, my lord, I believe we are beyond the formalities–will you not call me Charlotte?”

A rush of hot blood shot from his head straight to his groin, his breathing came sharper and a metallic taste flooded his mouth.

“I would be delighted to do so…Charlotte.” The name sounded like liquid gold.

Medieval Monday Returns! Excerpt from Time Enough to Love

Welcome to Medieval Monday, a blog hop for those who love a medieval romance. Over the next 11 weeks, I and 10 other medieval romance novelists will share snippets from one of our works. I haven’t been able to share snippets with these wonderful authors for a while, but I’m so glad I’m back!

Our theme for this session is Nature, and I’m using an extended excerpt from my medieval romance Time Enough to Love. It’s toward the end of the book, actually, when the hero, Sir Geoffrey Longford and heroine, Lady Alyse de Courcy, have just escaped the Black Plague in Bordeaux, France, and are traveling toward Alyse’s father’s home in northern France. They have been camping  for almost 10 days as their journey takes them out into the beautiful French countryside.

This first excerpt is much longer than the rest you’ll see as you hop to each different author’s blog each week. Most will be about 10 lines long. Today, because I’m setting up the action, is quite a bit longer. I hope you enjoy, Time Enough to Love.

BLURB:

When Lady Alyse de Courcy is betrothed to Sir Geoffrey Longford, she has no choice but to make the best of a bad bargain. The hulking knight is far from her ideal man, and although he does possess some wit and charm, he is no match for the sinfully sensual man she secretly admires, Thomas, Earl of Braeton, her betrothed’s best friend.

From the first, Sir Geoffrey finds himself smitten by Lady Alyse, and, despite her infatuation with his friend, vows to win her love. When Geoffrey puts his mind to wooing Alyse, he is delighted to find her succumbing to his seduction. But when cruel circumstances separate them, Geoffrey must watch helplessly as Thomas steps in to protect Alyse—and falls in love with her himself.

As the three courtiers accompany Princess Joanna to her wedding in Spain, they run headlong into the Black Plague. With her world plunged into chaos, Alyse struggles with her feelings for both the men she loves. But which love will survive?

EXCERPT:

“I fear we must make our camp here tonight, Alyse,” Geoffrey called as he rode into a clearing to the right of the road. “We will not make Laval before the sun sets, and there will be no moon tonight.”

Alyse glanced around the exposed area. Not her first choice for their encampment. They had been extremely fortunate thus far in their travels, for they had either found accommodations in villages or made camp in abandoned stables for the past nine nights. The thought of sleeping out in the open did not appeal to her in the least.

“We will be very exposed, Geoffrey. Are you sure we will be safe?”

Three weeks after her fever had broken, Alyse had recovered enough strength to sit a horse more than an hour or two a day. Geoffrey had insisted they wait to leave until she could ride rather than take a carriage that would move too slowly and elicit too much interest from those they passed on the road.

Lawlessness gripped the countryside, as Geoffrey had discovered while bargaining for goods in Loremo. A gang of ragtag peasants had set upon him as he returned to the manor house. He managed to fend them off with little harm to himself, although two of the ruffians lay dead in the road as the others scattered. The encounter had sobered him, and he insisted she be completely well before they struck out for Beaulieu, a journey of almost three weeks, in an effort to contact her family.

The thought of them facing her father together, however, terrified Alyse as much as the vagabonds . According to Church law, the ceremony they had performed in the princess’s chapel bound them in holy matrimony as surely as if they had spoken their vows before Pope Clement himself. Unhappily, without witnesses or a priest’s blessing, they had only their word that the ceremony had taken place.

They had ridden to the monastery at Montclair the day before they left Loremo, hoping the brothers would marry them. But they had found no sign of the monks and assumed they had been called away to other duties for their order. That left the problem of their marriage unresolved, for Geoffrey refused to venture near large towns lest either the plague or lawlessness overtake them. He kept reassuring her that as soon as they found a town that seemed safe, they would enter it and be wed properly.

As a result, they were now almost halfway through their journey, for they had made good time in the crisp October air. Today they had ridden through thickly wooded countryside where leaves of riotous color surrounded them, often swirling around the horses’ feet or catching on their cloaks in startling patches of gold, orange, and red. The lowering sun glinted through the trees to the west when Geoffrey had reigned in Saracen.

“’Twill be fine, my love. There is a stream yonder, and the trees on the far side of the clearing will provide some shelter for us. We will be fine.” Geoffrey dismounted and gathered the reins to lead Saracen and Falcon to the water.

Alyse slid to the ground, grabbed the packs from Mirabelle’s back, and relinquished her to him as well. She had insisted on bringing Falcon with them as assurance against a mishap on the road. Also because she could not bear the thought of Thomas’s horse being sold or bartered, as they had done with the horses that had remained at the manor. And, she had argued, three horses could be the beginnings of a stable when they returned to England, for God only knew what they would find when they arrived at Longford Manor.

As Geoffrey saw to the horses’ needs, Alyse laid out the bedroll and blankets, made the fire, and spread their meager dinner on the pallet. When Geoffrey brought a skin of fresh water, they sat together, as had become their custom, to watch the sun go down and eat their meal of cheese, bread, and salt beef.

“Stop leering at me, my lord.” Alyse grinned at him then took a piece of bread and tore it into small bits. She nibbled the crust of one and drank some ale.

“You are too fetching in that outfit for me to do anything else, love.” Geoffrey’s gaze strayed from her breasts to her legs. She had insisted on wearing Thomas’s altered suit of clothes for comfort during the long days of riding, and for the protection it afforded her as a disguise. Even though it hid all her womanly curves, it had proven to be a great distraction for her husband.

“You are not eating, Alyse.” Not enough of a distraction. “What is amiss, my love?” Geoffrey finished his cheese and nodded toward the pile of food still before her.

“’Tis nothing. I am just overtired tonight.” She packed the food away quickly so he would not see how much she had actually eaten.

“But you ate nothing this morning either, sweetheart.”

“I ate a goodly bit at noon though.”

Geoffrey frowned. “You ate some bread and cheese. And not much of that.” He peered sharply at her. “Mayhap we are pressing too hard. The long days in the saddle are too tiring for you after your illness.” He drew her into his arms. “You must keep up your strength, love. You must eat more than bread and cheese. When we come to Laval tomorrow, we will stop and find a hot meal for us. Chicken, and fresh bread, and a nice thick pudding perhaps.”

Alyse swallowed hard at the thought of such food, praying her stomach would settle. “That sounds wonderful, Geoffrey. After a long sleep, I am sure I will be hungry. I am just so very tired now.” She removed her shoes and lay back on the pallet as Geoffrey stoked the fire.

He turned toward her and smiled—a slow smile that made her heart melt. He spread their cloaks over them then lay down beside her. A thousand stars had suddenly appeared in the inky night sky as the sun retreated around the rim of the Earth. The rustling leaves, the subtle rush of the stream, the soft stamping of the horses as they moved about cropping grass soothed her. She closed her eyes, the aches and weariness seeping from her.

Geoffrey took her hand and placed a soft kiss on the palm. “I wonder what it would be like to love you under the stars?” he whispered, nuzzling her neck.

Half asleep, she stretched her neck out, expecting more caresses. “It is an extraordinary experience. There is nothing quite like it,” she murmured, turning toward him, smiling sleepily into his face.

“How do you know that?” His soft voice carried a dangerous note.

To find out what happens next, follow me next week to Ashley York’s blog.

Weekend Writing Warriors ~ 5/03/20 To Woo A Wicked Widow ~ The Lady Arrives

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors!

SNIPPET:

Nash stared at the list of names, fighting not to crush it in his fury—he needed the information it contained, although he’d read its contents often enough he’d almost committed it to memory. Six of his tenant families had been attacked in the last week by this gang of what purported to be ex-soldiers unable to secure work after the war; they had taken matters into their own hands by robbing and pillaging in hopes of stealing enough for their families to survive.

Nash shook his head—soldiers—he could scarcely credit it.

He’d received the report late last night and this morning, he’d ridden out to the latest victim, John Wright, a wheelwright by trade, and what he had found had not been pretty. He closed his eyes and swore under his breath.

There was a knock at the door, and Acres opened it to announce, “Lady Cavendish is here, my lord, in the small reception room.”

Nash’s head jerked up. Charlotte? He tossed the list onto his cluttered desk and all but ran from the room; he strode swiftly into the green chamber and stopped. She stood in the middle of the room, severe in a black riding habit, but with a ravishing hat sitting jauntily on her head, its ostrich feather trailing over her shoulder like an invitation to likewise run his fingers down her back.

Weekend Writing Warriors ~ 4/26/20 Heart of Desire ~ Inappropriate Behavior

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors!

Today I’m continuing to share snippets from Heart of Desire, Book 2 of my Handful of Hearts Regency novella series.

BLURB:

Follow your heart to find your desire

Miss Katherine Locke is irked to start her third Season dancing with the disagreeable Lord Haversham, her brother’s friend and her own arch enemy. After three years out, however, she’s finally interested in the dashing Lord Finley—only to find out her cousin has set her cap for him too. To make the man jealous, Kate feigns interest in Lord Haversham, only to be shocked to find the handsome lord apparently falling for her. With time running out, should she accept his suit and risk falling in love despite herself?

Marcus, Lord Haversham, is in a tight pinch. His estates are failing and, worse, he’s just lost three thousand pounds to his best friend, Lord Ainsley. Ainsley’s solution: have Marcus marry his shrewish sister, and he’ll cancel his gambling debt plus give him ten thousand more pounds for her dowry. With nowhere to turn, Marcus agrees, praying he can keep word of the wager from Miss Locke long enough to charm her into marrying him. But can he avoid falling in love himself?

This snippet follows immediately on from last week’s snippet. Kate and Lord Haversham are dancing a scandalous waltz together and Lord Haversham has leaned uncomfortably close to Kate. In retaliation, she’s just stomped on his foot and he’s fallen into her during the waltz. Outraged, Kate is glad the dance has ended and speaks sharply to Haversham who is just as glad to take her to her brother.

Some portions of this snippet may be changed from the book’s regular format to allow for WWW’s 10 line requirement.

SNIPPET

“Ah, there he is, talking to our cousin, Lady Celinda.”

“Do you think she will be slighted if I don’t ask her for the next dance? I am weary of having my toes stepped on, although she may have better dancing form than my last partner.” Lord Haversham didn’t break a smile, but his walnut brown eyes twinkled with merriment.

“I think she’ll be delighted to escape having a conversation with you about your antiquated views on the social graces.” Beyond caring who heard her, Kate allowed her voice to rise above the hubbub of conversation saying, “And if your poor sister isn’t allowed to waltz before she is married, you should be ashamed of yourself.”

They stopped in front of her brother and cousin, the one trying to contain his laughter, the other glancing about the room with an alarmed expression on her face. Kate could only thank goodness they were not at Almack’s. She might very well lose her voucher. Lord Haversham always knew exactly what to say to goad her into inappropriate behavior.

Weekend Writing Warriors ~ 4/19/20 Heart of Desire ~ Luck

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors!

SNIPPET

“Of all the students at Oxford, my brother had to befriend you?”

“He had you for a sister—his luck was due for a change.”

“Well, I wish mine would change, Haversham. If I have to endure you for five more minutes, I will fall down in a dead faint just to get away from you.” Kate wanted to scream in frustration at her brother’s best friend, but the man was right–any scandalous behavior could end with her compromised and married to Haversham before the month was out. The Season had just begun and she refused to let it end in a single night with the man who’d been the bane of her life for years.

“Luck must be on your side tonight, as the dance has, mercifully, come to an end”–he dropped her hand as though it burned him and offered his arm–“shall I see you to your brother?”

“Lord, yes.” She barely touched his proffered arm; the less contact with him the better. “Nathan must see that I completed the dance with you,” she said, avoiding his eyes.

All she could see were his dark eyes, as the crisp scent of his sandalwood cologne filled her nose.

“Ainsley should be horsewhipped for allowing it.”

“I’ll see to it he horsewhips you if you don’t let me go,” Kate gave a hopping step and smashed her foot down on top of his.

Lord Haversham lurched forward, actually falling onto her.

For the briefest moment, they stood pressed together in a warm embrace that made Kate tingle all over. Then outrage swept through her, and she pushed him away. “How dare you,” she seethed, trying to pull away from him.

“That was your fault, and you know it. And if you make a scene that results in me having to marry you, I swear I will lock you in the tower at my grandfather’s castle and throw away the key.” Lord Haversham righted himself and smiled at her with clenched teeth.

The Most Eligible Lord in London ~ New Regency Romance by Ella Quinn

Last week my good friend Ella Quinn released The Most Eligible Lord in London, the first book in a new series of Regency romances called The Lords on London!

Handsome, rakish, incorrigibly flirtatious—Fredrick, Lord Littleton, is notorious. Lady Adeline Wivenly is resolved to keep him at arm’s length during her first Season—until she overhears another woman’s plot to trick him into marriage. Even a rogue is undeserving of such deception, and Adeline feels obliged to warn him—only to find herself perilously attracted . . .

In the past, Littleton’s charm nearly got him leg-shackled to the wrong woman. Now he’s positive he’s found the right one, for Adeline is everything he wants and needs in a wife. Her sense of justice is so strong she agrees to help him despite her mistrust. But can the ton’s most elusive lord convince the lady he is finally serious about marriage—as long as she will be his bride?

To celebrate Ella’s release, I’m giving away an  e-copy of The Most Eligible Lord in London, to one person who comments on this post this week telling me what’s the most romantic thing anyone’s ever done for you.

The drawing will be made on Friday evening, with the winner to be announced on this blog on Saturday.

Good luck, everyone!

Weekend Writing Warriors ~ 4/05/20 Heart of Desire ~ The Most Scandalous of Dances

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors!

So sorry I couldn’t join you last week but I was in the process of fetching my daughter home from Jackson, Mississippi–a four day trip that wore me slam out! But I’ve recovered and ready for snippets this week. 🙂

Because I didn’t  get to share my final snippet from Betrothal last week, I’ve put it here for you to enjoy before going on to this week’s new offering:

Betrothal:

Strangely soft, yet very sweet, his touch sent a searing bolt straight to her stomach, setting it afire. After moments that seemed an eternity, his mouth slackened on hers as though he would release her. Then he flicked the tip of his tongue across the hard-pressed seam of her mouth, testing for another invitation.

With a gasp she jumped back, drawing a chuckle from Geoffrey, who had the grace to glance around to make sure they had not been observed. “Be not discomfited, sweet. We are safe in our conversation.”

“’Twas not in our conversation that I feared harm, my lord.” Lord, ’twas difficult to sound outraged when she could still feel his lips on hers.

Today I’m switching gears and sharing snippets from Heart of Desire, Book 2 of my Handful of Hearts Regency novella series.

Some portions of this snippet may be changed from the book’s regular format to allow for WWW’s 10 line requirement.

SNIPPET:

Packed to the gills, Lady Hamilton’s ballroom glittered with candlelight, fine silks and satins, and every type of precious jewel known to the world. The music had a lively air, the first dance being a waltz, and Miss Katherine Locke would’ve thought herself fortunate to be out again in Society after a long, cold, dull winter in Somerset save that her partner, Lord Haversham, was the rudest man in London. Well, his lordship was about to discover that Kate Locke was not one to suffer fools lightly.

“So you refuse to allow your sister to waltz, yet you are quite willing to stand up with me and dance this, according to you, most scandalous of dances.” Kate smiled into the odious wretch’s face before saying, “My lord, I should say that smacks of hypocrisy.”

“Indeed,” Lord Haversham turned them skillfully at the end of the floor, “I would say it showed a want of character in your brother for allowing you to dance it with me. The waltz should be danced by married couples and no one else.” He pulled her close against him, so their bodies almost touched.

She gasped at her proximity to the rogue–how dare he make a spectacle of them on this crowded dance floor?

“You see?” he whispered, peering into her face, his gaze intent upon her mouth.

Heart of Desire Giveaway

Although I’d hoped this could have begun last week, circumstances beyond my control have postponed the next giveaway until now. But now the game is on!

A New Giveaway for a copy of Heart of Desire

This is Book 2 in my Handful of Hearts series that I’m spotlighting in April (all of these novellas are on sale for .99!)

EXCERPT:

London, May 5, 1820

Packed to the gills, Lady Hamilton’s ballroom glittered with candlelight, fine silks and satins, and every type of precious jewel known to the world. The music had a lively air, the first dance being a waltz, and Miss Katherine Locke would’ve thought herself fortunate to be out again in Society after a long, cold, dull winter in Somerset save that her partner, Lord Haversham, was the rudest man in London. Well, his lordship was about to discover that Kate Locke was not one to suffer fools lightly.

“So you refuse to allow your sister to waltz, yet you are quite willing to stand up with me and dance this, according to you, most scandalous of dances.” Kate smiled into the odious wretch’s face. “My lord, I should say that smacks of hypocrisy.”

“Indeed.” Lord Haversham turned them skillfully at the end of the floor. “I would say it showed a want of character in your brother for allowing you to dance it with me. The waltz should be danced by married couples and no one else.” He pulled her close against him, so their bodies almost touched.

She gasped at her proximity to the rogue. How dare he make a spectacle of them on this crowded dance floor?

“You see?” he whispered, peering into her face, his gaze intent upon her mouth.

All she could see were his dark eyes, as the crisp scent of his sandalwood cologne filled her nose.

“Ainsley should be horsewhipped for allowing it.”

“I’ll see to it he horsewhips you if you don’t let me go.” Kate gave a hopping step and smashed her foot down on top of his.

“Of all the students at Oxford, my brother had to befriend you?”

“He had you for a sister—his luck was due for a change.”

“Well, I wish mine would change, Haversham. If I have to endure you for five more minutes, I will fall down in a dead faint just to get away from you.” Kate wanted to scream in frustration at her brother’s best friend, but the man was right. Any scandalous behavior could end with her compromised and married to Haversham before the month was out. The Season had just begun. She refused to let it end in a single night with the man who’d been the bane of her life for years.
