Medieval Monday ~ Seduction at the Christmas Court ~ Absolute Hatred

Good Morning! Welcome to the Fall/Winter Medieval Monday blog hop! We’re doing the hop somewhat differently this time around. There will be a link below to the Medieval Romance Lovers Facebook page that has links to all the other authors who are participating this time around. So after you read my excerpt, click the link and go have fun with our medieval romance snippets.  They can also be found via #MedMonFall2020 .

Our theme for the fall is Nature and I’ll be sharing a segment from my medieval Christmas novella Seduction at the Christmas Court. The scene begins with a boar hunt some days before Christmas in 1349. Geoffrey, Lord Longford and his wife Alyse have been summoned to the King’s Christmas court and this is the King’s favorite sport.

Available on Amazon, Smashwords, and Barnes & Noble.

BLURB:

Alyse and Geoffrey, Lord and Lady Longford, have journeyed to the glittering Christmas Court of King Edward III in the year 1349 to wait upon the king and take part in some Yuletide merriment. However, when Geoffrey is suddenly called into the king’s service again, Alyse must remain at court, attending the queen and persuading her rebellious sister to accept an unwanted betrothal. When rumors of Geoffrey’s death arise, Alyse fends off an old suitor who wants to renew their friendship. But how long will he take “No” for an answer?

EXCERPT FOR WEEK #4:

Almost in position, Geoffrey glanced at the stationary black dog, still baying like a banshee, signaled it to stay, then shouted, “Catch!”

As the gray dog leaped forward, a mighty roar erupted from the thicket behind Geoffrey.

Guy de Valere burst through the branches, dagger drawn. He stopped, stared at Geoffrey with a look of astonishment on his face then wrenched his attention back to the raging animal before him. It let out a great squeal and rushed toward them, absolute hatred in its small, round, black eyes.

Weekend Writing Warriors ~ 10/11/20 Heart of Desire: The Scandalous Waltz

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors!

This month I’m highlighting my Handful of Hearts series by putting each of four of the novellas on sale, one each week in October and offering a ghostly Regency romance short story, Hearts at All Hallow’s Eve, in the same series for FREE on Smashwords and B & N (On Amazon it’s .99) thru October 31.

This week’s featured book from Handful of Hearts is Heart of Desire.

Here’s the blurb:

BLURB:

Follow your heart to find your desire

Miss Katherine Locke is irked to start her third season dancing with the disagreeable Lord Haversham, her brother’s friend and her own arch enemy. After three years out, however, she’s finally interested in the dashing Lord Finley—only to find out her cousin has set her cap for him too. To make the man jealous, Kate feigns interest in Lord Haversham, only to be shocked to find the handsome lord apparently falling for her. With time running out, should she accept his suit and risk falling in love despite herself?

Marcus, Lord Haversham, is in a tight pinch. His estates are failing and worse, he’s just lost three thousand pounds to his best friend, Lord Ainsley. Ainsley’s solution: have Marcus marry his shrewish sister and he’ll cancel his gambling debt plus give him ten thousand more pounds for her dowry. With nowhere to turn, Marcus agrees, praying he can keep word of the wager from Miss Locke long enough to charm her into marrying him. But can he avoid falling in love himself?

I’m starting this snippet well into the book because this is a fun scene. Maria is about to leave her lover, Hugh, to go to Scotland until they can marry. Hugh has taken Maria out for a final outing, to spend some time together before they have to say goodbye. They have now begun to skate.

We are in Hugh’s POV.

EXCERPT:

“So you refuse to allow your sister to waltz, yet you are quite willing to stand up with me and dance this, according to you, most scandalous of dances.” Kate smiled into the odious wretch’s face. “My lord, I should say that smacks of hypocrisy.”

“Indeed.” Lord Haversham turned them skillfully at the end of the floor. “I would say it showed a want of character in your brother for allowing you to dance it with me. The waltz should be danced by married couples and no one else.” He pulled her close against him, so their bodies almost touched.

She gasped at her proximity to the rogue. How dare he make a spectacle of them on this crowded dance floor?

And now to finish the scene :

“You see?” he whispered, peering into her face, his gaze intent upon her mouth.

All she could see were his dark eyes, as the crisp scent of his sandalwood cologne filled her nose.

“Ainsley should be horsewhipped for allowing it.”

“I’ll see to it he horsewhips you if you don’t let me go.” Kate gave a hopping step and smashed her foot down on top of his.

Lord Haversham lurched forward, actually falling onto her.

For the briefest moment, they stood pressed together in a warm embrace that made Kate tingle all over. Then outrage swept through her, and she pushed him away. “How dare you,” she seethed, trying to pull away from him.

“That was your fault, and you know it. And if you make a scene that results in me having to marry you, I swear I will lock you in the tower at my grandfather’s castle and throw away the key.”

Heart of Desire is available on Amazon, Smashwords, B & N, Kobo, and Apple for .99.

And don’t forget to check out the rest of the Warriors here. There’s some fantastic snippets to be read.

The Widow’s Christmas Surprise: A Holiday Outing

As the holiday season approaches, I thought I’d give everyone a little taste of my newest Christmas novel, The Widow’s Christmas Surprise.

BLURB:

The death of her husband has thrown Lady Maria Kersey’s future into doubt—and her heart into the arms of a man she cannot have. But Christmas with the Widows’ Club will bring choices—and surprises–that may change all her holidays to come . . .

Maria just gave birth to her first child, a beautiful daughter—but the event is shrouded in sorrow.  A month earlier, Maria’s husband, Lord Kersey, was killed in a duel under compromising circumstances. Worse, Maria’s failure to provide a male heir has stripped her of any hope of an inheritance. Scorned by the ton, one of her few allies is her late husband’s steward, Hugh Granger. Hugh is everything her husband was not—warm, charming—and penniless. . . .

Hugh has fallen desperately in love with Maria, but has little to offer but comfort. As their attraction becomes impossible to resist, Maria flees to London to spend Christmas with her dearest friends, a group of widows who lost their own husbands in the Battle of Waterloo. Little does she know the holidays will reveal a twist of fate she never expected—proving that the greatest Christmas gift is the magic of true love . . .

In the excerpt I’ll be sharing for the next weeks, Maria and others in the family are preparing for Christmas by going into the woods to gather greenery for the upcoming Christmas house party being given by the new Lord Kersey

EXCERPT:

“Good morning, again, ladies and gentlemen.” Lord Kersey spoke up over the chatter of the breakfasters. “I know for several of you this morning’s summons was a surprise,” he looked directly first at Lord Wetherby and then at James Garrett, “but you really should not have been, given that today is December sixth.”

December sixth? Maria looked blankly around the table. Jane’s face showed the same confusion that must be on her own face. However, Mr. and Miss Granger were now smiling as well as the Garretts, obviously understanding the importance of the date.

Naturally, Jane would be the one to speak up first. “I’m sorry, my lord, but what is the significance of December sixth?”

“It is St. Nicholas’s Day, my dear.” Lady Kersey answered, her eyes lit with excitement. “A holiday we enjoyed celebrating in Virginia very much.”

“Oh, yes, in my flurry of unpacking,” Jane sent an arch look toward Maria, “I quite forgot the day.” Sipping her tea nonchalantly, Jane laughed softly. “I have not truly celebrated it since my children were small.”

“Does it have something to do with Advent?” Maria cocked her head. She’d heard the day spoken of, but as the beginning of the Christmas season.

Carefully setting down his cup, Mr. Granger smiled at her indulgently. “If I may, my lord?”

Nodding, Lord Kersey raised his cup in a salute. “Thank you, Mr. Granger.”

“It isn’t directly connected to Advent, Lady Kersey.” Suddenly all Mr. Granger’s attention was focused on her, making her want to shrink back in her chair.

All eyes seemed to be on her.

Mr. Granger smiled kindly and continued. “It is, however, a Christian feast day and a celebration of the good works of Saint Nicholas of Myra who was known for secretly giving gifts to children.”

“I remember getting small gifts in my stockings when I was young.” That had been fun. How had she forgotten all about that? She would have to begin doing that with Jane next year. “How is it celebrated now?”

“The same way you have said. The evening before, all the children put out their shoes or stockings and the good saint is supposed to come by in the night and fill them with candy or gold coins.” Mr. Granger exchanged a glance with his sister. “You remember that, don’t you Bella?” He turned back to Maria, making tingles of excitement speed through her. “It also unofficially begins the Christmas season.”

I’ll be posting snippets of this scene every Friday until Christmas. So see you next week!

Happy Hauntings for Halloween Week #1

This month, Thursdays are my opportunity to celebrate my favorite holiday with some Halloween fun and a giveaway.

Each week I’ll post something fun relating to Halloween and will offer a giveaway of a $5.00 Starbucks gift card, which I’ll mail to you in a Halloween card (with maybe another little goodie tucked inside). I’ll draw a random name from the commenters on each week’s post.

This week I’m getting excited to start watching Halloween movies. My all time favorite is Hocus Pocus with Bette Midler.

Such a fun movie! For spooky but Not-So-Scary Halloween Movies I also like The Adams Family, The Mummy (Brendan Fraser version), Beetlejuice, and Young Frankenstein.

The one Not-So-Scary Halloween movie I haven’t seen (and really must) is The Nightmare Before Christmas.

What’s your fave Not-So-Scary Halloween movie? Is there one you haven’t seen but want to?

Medieval Monday ~ Seduction at the Christmas Court ~ In For The Kill

EXCERPT:

It squealed and tore up the thick carpet of   dead leaves that covered the ground with its   sharp, white tusks. The near dog, more gray   than black, circled to the boar’s left. Must be   the catch hound. He’d wait and let the dog   do its work to pin the dangerous animal to   the ground. Then he’d move in to deal the   death blow.

The gray dog continued stalking to the left of its quarry, growling deep in its chest all the while. Geoffrey countered to the right, stepping carefully over the thick branches that littered the ground. One misstep and he could go down. The enraged animal would be on him before he could lift his dagger.

Weekend Writing Warriors ~ 10/04/20 The Widow’s Christmas Surprise ~ “I Won’t Go!”

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors!

Today I’m continuing with my Christmas novel that releases at the end of September, The Widow’s Christmas Surprise. This is book five of The Widows’ Club series and is Maria’s story.

It released last Tuesday, September 29 in print, e-book, so this will be my last snippet of this until we get closer to December!

Here’s the blurb:

Little does she know the holidays will reveal a twist of fate she never expected—proving that the greatest Christmas gift is the magic of true love . . .

EXCERPT:

“You know I do not.” Existence here without her would be the worst form of torture.

“Then I won’t go,” she raised her head to look at him, love shining in her eyes, “we can get married, Hugh. I can live with you and your sister and my daughter at Wingate–if only we think about it, we can find a way to be happy.”

“My love, what do you think Lord Kersey will do when he finds out that I have married his kinswoman without so much as a by your leave? I wager I will find myself without a situation, therefore no house, no means to support any of us.” He hated to extinguish the hope in her face, but the harsh reality of their plight could not be mitigated. “Our best plan is the one we agreed to last night.”

“But I don’t want to leave you, not even for the time it takes me to go from here to there.” She struck out toward the far shore.

And now to finish the scene :

“Maria, come back.” He set out after her, but she swung around toward him.

“I won’t do it, Hugh. I won’t go. There must be some other way we can be together without another wretched scandal raising its head.” She looked so distraught, so forlorn, where moments before she’d been all smiles and laughter.

“Come back, my love. We can talk about it before we go back to the Hall.” It was more of a perfunctory concession. He’d thought about nothing else for the past days save how to make everything come out right. Nothing, save her leaving or Kit dying, would end their torment.

“Promise me, Hugh. Promise me we will be to—” Maria’s foot slid backward toward the bulrushes, broke through the ice and plunged her into the depths of the icy pond.

The Widow’s Christmas Surprise is available for pre-order on Amazon, B & N, Kobo, and Apple.

The Widow’s Christmas Surprise is available for purchase in e-book, print, and audio book on AmazonB & NKobo, and Apple.

I’m very excited to release this, my first full-length Christmas novel, and am so happy to be celebrating Christmas a little early because of it.

Let’s get the party started with a little giveaway! Because I just received a huge box of copies of The Widow’s Christmas Surprise, I really want to share it with you! So I’ll pick a random commenter from this post to receive the first signed copy of The Widow’s Christmas Surprise. In your comment tell me what your favorite Christmas activity is (buying the tree, trimming the tree, Christmas parties, caroling, etc.)

To whet your whistle, here’s a little excerpt to show you what the book’s heroine, Maria’s, favorite Christmas activity is!

EXCERPT:

“Ice skates!” Maria darted forward, taking one up, but being mindful of the blade. “I used to go ice skating all the time at my parents’ house. There is a river nearby that would freeze when the weather was cold enough.” She turned a gleeful face to him. “How did you know?”

“I didn’t.” Grinning like a fool at her look of pure pleasure, Hugh thanked whatever angel had whispered in his ear to take Maria skating. “I hoped you had skated before, but I would have been happy to teach you if you hadn’t.”

“Well let’s see who knows what.” She dropped down onto the log and began to tie the skates onto her shoes. “Last one onto the ice has to pay a forfeit.”

Lord, and didn’t he know what her forfeit would be if she won the wager.

Hugh sat down to strap his skates on as well. The process wasn’t terribly difficult, just lengthy. He fumbled with the straps, his fingers stupid as he tried to hurry.

“One skate on!” Maria laughed and began on the other one.

“No fair. You have smaller fingers that work better than mine.” Cursing under his breath, Hugh buckled the first skate on and reached for the second, although he doubted he could catch up with Maria now.

“Done!” Pink cheeked she laughed again as she stood before him, showing him first one and then the other skate. “Do you need some help with your laces, my dear?”

“No, thank you.” His words came out a growl, which made Maria laugh all the harder.

“Come.” She held out her hand and helped him up when he was finished. “I cannot wait to skate again. It has been an age at least. I had to have been ten years old.”

“Well, I hope it comes back to you, but if not, I will be here to save you.” He grinned as they made their way toward the pond’s edge.

“My hero.” She clutched his arm in mock terror.

He pushed aside some frozen vegetation, creating a path to the ice. “Hold my hand.”

She gripped it tightly and followed him to the edge.

“Wait here and let me sound out the ice. It’s been so cold recently I don’t think it has thinned, but best be safe.”

Maria nodded gravely, her brows drawn inward. “Do be careful.”

He set his skates on the smooth ice and pushed off. Each year it came back to him, as if he skated every day of his life. Cautiously, he struck out for the center of the pond, watching for slushy spots or cloudy patches of ice. That meant it wasn’t frozen hard enough. But everywhere he looked the ice was clear. No air bubbles, no cracks, just solid, clear ice. Perfect. “I think it’s good,” he called, turning toward the bank. “Come on out.” He waved to her even as he started back.

Maria set her skates on the surface and pushed off. She wobbled for a moment, her arms flailing as she fought for balance.

Hugh hurried toward her, then something seemed to change.

Suddenly, she remembered her balance and her strokes became strong and even.  She threw back her head and laughed, then struck out to meet him. Grabbing his hands, she assumed the skater’s position, right hand over left, and their feet began to glide in unison.

“I see it came back to you.” He steered them down the center of the pond toward the bulrushes at the end, then turned to head back up the far side.

“It did. This is so marvelous. I did not realize how much I had missed it until I started to skate.” Maria’s excitement was infectious. He’d not thought of skating since last year, but now the thrill of the speed—almost like flying—seemed one of the most exhilarating things he’d ever done. “Take my hands like this.”

He clasped her hands, left in left and right in right, until they faced one another. Then he began to spin them around, faster and faster until the world sped by at a dizzying pace.

Maria leaned her head back, laughing up to the cloudless sky, her face more beautiful than he’d ever seen it.

He slowed them down until they stood facing one another, panting. “I love you.” Hugh managed to get the words out before he sank his mouth onto hers. The kiss was quick—they were still both gasping for breath—then a gulp of air, then he kissed her again. Longer this time, pressing against her even as he wrapped his arms around her and drew her to him. Another breath and he settled in for a lengthy kiss that he deepened, delving through her lips, into her mouth, tasting all the entrancing flavors that were uniquely her. God, he would never get enough.

Slowly, he came back to his senses and broke the kiss, albeit reluctantly. Maria nestled her head on his chest, as though it was the most natural thing in the world to do on the middle of a frozen pond.

“Do you still want me to leave?”

Come back by at noon for the announcement of the winners of all the goodies in the Rafflecopter giveaway for The Widow’s Christmas Surprise!
