Seduction at the Christmas Court

Seduction at the Christmas Court is one of my earlier Christmas novellas and is part of the Time Enough to Love series, set in the High Middle Ages. This series is the first romance novel I ever wrote and is technically one novel that I published as a series of three novellas. It’s the love story of Lady Alyce de Courcy and Sir Geoffrey Longford, courtiers at the court of Edward III. I like to describe it as Romeo and Juliet during the Bubonic Plague with a happy ending! LOL

But Seduction at the Christmas Court follows on about six months after the end of Time Enough to Love (but before the Epilogue), when Alyce and Geoffrey are summoned to the Christmas Court in London and are met by not only the King and his courtiers, but a former suitor of Alyce’s who’s more than ready to renew his suit to her–despite the fact she’s already married!

BLURB:

Alyse and Geoffrey, Lord and Lady Longford, have journeyed to the glittering Christmas Court of King Edward III in the year 1349 to wait upon the king and take part in some Yuletide merriment. However, when Geoffrey is suddenly called into the king’s service again, Alyse must remain at court, attending the queen and persuading her rebellious sister to accept an unwanted betrothal. When rumors of Geoffrey’s death arise, Alyse fends off an old suitor who wants to renew their friendship. But how long will he take “No” for an answer?

Researching the Christmas Court in 1349 was fascinating–I love the Medieval period and discovering the ways they celebrated Christmas then was both fun and enriching. The sumptuous food, the blood sport of boar hunting, the pomp and circumstance of the courtly dances made me shiver with excitement and almost wish I could have been part of that celebration. If you love tales of medieval romance, you won’t want to miss this Yuletide tale!

Seduction at the Christmas Court is available for purchase on Amazon and in Kindle Unlimited.

Weekend Writing Warriors ~ 12/08/2024 ~ The Christmas Pact~ A Bouquet of Roses

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors !

I’ll be continuing my snippets from The Christmas Pact through the month of December! I hope you’re enjoying Henrietta and Charlie getting reacquainted after so many years apart.

The Christmas Pact

BLURB:

Will a childhood promise lead them to true romance?

When Henrietta Price accidentally pummels a gentleman with a snowball, her instant mortification turns to delight when she discovers the young man is none other than her childhood best friend, Charlie. Though they haven’t seen each other in ten years, he still has the same vivid blue eyes, wicked laugh, and caring nature she remembers so well. Once he’d even vowed—at ten-years-old—to marry her, if necessary, to save her from a life of spinsterhood. And although she’s considering another man’s proposal, she can’t quite keep that long-ago promise out of her head…

Charlie Newkirk hasn’t stopped thinking about Hen since she stole a kiss from him all those years ago.  Now he can scarcely believe the beautiful woman in front of him is the same girl whose braid he used to pull. Worse, he has no idea if she’s given her heart to the wealthy young marquess courting her or if she even remembers the promise he hopes to fulfill.

With their future happiness at stake, will Charlie be able to remind Henrietta of their Christmas pact and turn their childhood friendship into a newfound romance? Or will he forever remain just someone she used to know?

I’m continuing today’s snippet beginning where we left off from last week’s. Enjoy!

EXCERPT:

Laughing, Henrietta patted Charlie’s hand before saying, “Perhaps I can put in a good word for you with the reverend.”

“Thank you, Hen,” he swallowed and reached for another sweet, “there was such a row before I came to London, I’ll take any help you can give me. Father can be stubborn, as I’m certain you remember.” Charlie leaned back on the sofa, waving a ginger biscuit in one hand.

Henrietta giggled and took up a ginger biscuit as well. It was so much fun to have Charlie to talk to again. She hadn’t realized how much she’d missed his company until this minute.

“Thank you so much for having me to tea, Lady Tollesbury. I feel almost as though I’m at home again.” Charlie spoke to her mother, but his gaze lingered on Henrietta.

And a little bit more…

“It was lovely to see you again after all this time, Charlie.” Mama was pouring more tea, although the pot had to be stone cold by now. “You must return and dine with us this evening. Lord Tollesbury will want to see you, I’m certain. You cannot deny him that pleasure, can you?”

“Of course not, my lady. I would be honored.” Charlie continued to stare at Henrietta.

There was a strangeness in his look that puzzled her, and she was about to ask him if something was the matter when the drawing room door opened.

A footman entered, carrying a large bouquet of exquisite pink and yellow roses. He strode to Mama. “My lady, these just arrived for Lady Henrietta.”

“Thank you, John.” Mama took the bouquet, frowning as she searched for a card.

The footman bowed and left.

“Ah, here it is.” Her face lit up as though the flowers were for her. She looked at Henrietta, a sparkle in her eyes. “They are from Lord Foxstone, Henrietta.”

Glancing at Charlie, Henrietta held out her hand to take the bouquet from her mother. She put her nose into the blooms—she had always loved the smell of roses. Somehow Lord Foxstone had discovered that fact. “He is a very attentive gentleman.”

“I assume he is one of your bevy of suitors, Henrietta?” Charlie’s smile, a little forced now, never left his face.

“He and Henrietta are betrothed.” The triumph in Mama’s voice irritated Henrietta to no end.

Yule Be Mine

Last year’s Christmas offering was a Christmas novella from my Welwyn Marriage Wager series for Dragonblade Publishing, titled Yule Be Mine.

Blurb:

‘Tis the season for love—no matter how much mistletoe it takes!

It’s Christmas time and Ulysses “Yule” Quartermain is unenthusiastically looking for a bride when Penelope St. Clare, the little sister of his boyhood friend, makes an appearance at a Christmas party. But it’s been ten years since he’s seen her. Penelope is no longer a child but a ravishing beauty, who’s turning heads everywhere she goes. And much to his discomfort, Yule is not immune to the charms of the little girl next door. But he’s working on it.

Penelope has wanted to marry Ulysses Quartermain for most of her life. Now she’s on the brink of her come out Season–a desirable young lady with wit and determination–and her happy ever after is within her grasp. If only she can make Yule see that she’s grown up and would make him the perfect wife, it’ll be the best present she’ll ever get.

The reason this series is so personal for me is all the heroes are named after my uncles–their middle names, at least–as an homage to my father and his brothers. The hero of Yule Be Mine, is named for my father’s oldest brother, Ivan Ulysses. So my hero is Ulysses Quartermain, the grandson of the Duke of Welwyn, but everyone calls him Yule. Which made for a perfect title, given that the novella takes place at Christmas.

I also have to admit that I named my heroine Penelope on purpose, because with a hero named Ulysses, his true love just has to be Penelope after the couple in Homer’s The Odyssey. And the fact that they’ve been parted for ten years (not because of war, but because her family’s been in Ireland) mirrors the ancient Greek poem as well, although in my version it’s Penelope who returns and works to win Yule.

But the book is filled with as much Christmas cheer I could put in there, because it’s set in Victorian times and unlike the Regency period, the Victorians did Christmas to the hilt. There’s a Christmas house party, lots of greenery–including tons of mistletoe, Christmas party games, a thrilling outdoor game called the Mistletoe Run that ends with a scandalous kiss, a Christmas pantomime in London, and decorating the Christmas tree.

If you’d like to indulge in a very romantic Victorian Christmas that would do Charles Dickens proud, grab a copy of  Yule Be Mine from Amazon or read it for free on KU.

And if you’d like even more Christmas romance, check out this website where Yule Be Mine is being featured! There’s never enough historical Christmas romances, are there?

Mischief Under the Mistletoe

The next Christmas novella is Mischief Under the Mistletoe, one of the most recent releases, but also the first one from All Wrapped Up to be lengthened into a novella.

One of the comments I got about the flash fiction piece ‘Tis the Season, was that the reader wanted to know what had happened during Jenny’s Season and how Alec had wooed her. Which got me to thinking, maybe I could expand the story. But as I wanted it to remain a Christmas story, I had to make it about a makeshift Season–a Christmas house party in fact–where Jenny could find her own true love.

Its first release date was 2015 with the title A Kiss Beneath the Mistletoe and a very amateurish cover by yours truly. I was really on a shoestring budget in those days. Then the following year, when I decided Kiss should be the prequel to my Handful of Hearts sweet romance series, my editor, Danielle Fine, re-imagined the cover in order to make it go along with the other covers in the series. I still think it’s very Christmasy and beautiful. And the title changed to Hearts Beneath the Mistletoe, in keeping with the titles of the series.

Fast forward to this year when I decided to re-imagine the handful of Hearts series with a little more steam. And so the cover and this time the story changed quite a bit to reflect the racier scenes for The Matchmaker’s Ball series of steamy historical romance.

Here’s the Blurb for Mischief Beneath the Mistletoe:

Every romance needs a bit of mischief. . .

At her eighteenth birthday celebration Jenny Crowley’s parents announce that instead of having the London Season she’s dreamed of for years, Jenny has actually been betrothed from birth to Alexander Isley, son of family friends and heir to a title. A distraught Jenny refuses point-blank to marry Alec, and when her aunt offers to whisk her away to a festive Christmas house party–complete with many eligible young bachelors–Jenny jumps at the chance to enjoy a variety of entertainments, be courted, and perhaps find the man of her dreams.

Alec Isley is between a rock and a hard place. He’s been secretly in love with Jenny for years and had hoped to court her properly during her Season. Now, with Jenny adamantly against the match, he must find a way to make her desire him as much as he does her. He follows Jenny to the house party in hopes of wooing her there, but when he discovers who else is courting her there, he’s frantic to keep her from making a horrible mistake. Can Alec convince her of his love in time to save her from being ruined under the mistletoe?

All Wrapped Up

For the month of December I’m going to spotlight all of my historical Christmas romances, one a day during the week until Christmas to give everyone a good look at some books you might not have seen before. And I’m starting with the very first Christmas collection I published in November 2011.

All Wrapped Up came about because I wanted to run a Christmas in July promotion. At the time, only two years after I’d started writing romance, I didn’t have any Christmas books to highlight. I was spending most of that summer in Washington, DC attending a symposium on Shakespeare at the Folger Library, and frankly needed something to do in the evenings after classes were over.

So I came up with the idea of writing flash fiction Christmas stories every week and publishing them on my blog. They were all very short–2500 words tops for each story. And at the time I wasn’t completely committed to writing historical romance, so two of the stories are historical and two are contemporary.  They were pretty well received and so in November of that year I gathered them all into a little anthology, my dear friend Alexandra Christle edited it and designed the cover and it was published on November 5 (my mother’s birthday). The four titles are The Kissing Tree, Sing A Christmas Carol, The Present, and ‘Tis the Season.

Of the four short pieces, three of them have now been expanded into Christmas novellas that you’ll be hearing about throughout December.

My little anthology was pretty well received, and my favorite review of it said: Like eating romance M & Ms. 🙂

And as a bonus–All Wrapped Up is FREE on Amazon. Go on and grab this little anthology and begin your Christmas TBR list today!

Weekend Writing Warriors ~ 12/01/2024 ~ The Christmas Pact~ “He Might Disown Me!”

EXCERPT:

“Were you not attending, Henrietta?” Mama pursed her lips. Her major complaint with Henrietta was that she never attended anyone properly. Usually, she was correct. “How tiresome you are. Charlie just told us that his father was quite displeased with him, didn’t you, Charlie?”

Swallowing hastily, Henrietta turned to her friend, all attention riveted on him. “Why is Reverend Newkirk displeased, Charlie? Surely you’ve never done anything to vex your papa.”

Charlie grinned and sipped some tea before saying, “Oh, it was most grievous, Hen–I thought for some time he might actually disown me.”

And a little bit more…

“Gracious, Charlie. What did you do?” Henrietta steeled herself for something absolutely scandalous.

“I took my great-uncle’s seat as an MP.” Chuckling, Charlie helped himself to another sandwich.

“He was upset because you went into politics?” Henrietta cocked her head. She’d think that would be an exciting and important career. “Why?”

“Because every first son of a Newkirk, for ten generations, at least, has gone into the Church.” Charlie finished off the sandwich and reached for a cream cake. “It’s even in our name—Newkirk. I’m the first one to go against tradition and not become a vicar since Angus Newkirk in 1654.”

“Do you know what Angus Newkirk did instead of becoming clergy, Charlie?” Mama’s interest sounded piqued.

“He joined the army. Very scandalous, given our pacific nature.” Charlie stared into Henrietta’s eyes, his own twinkling with amusement. “I should think I would be held in less dudgeon for becoming a mere politician.” The cream cake disappeared in one bite.

I’m continuing today’s snippet by skipping ahead to Charlie, Henrietta, and her mother sitting down to tea. How will Mama react to the return of the long lost friend? Enjoy!

EXCERPT:

“I remember so fondly Haverhill’s Charity Ball when I headed it,” Mama settled back in her chair and raised her cup, “I have been working with our local parish in Kent, although I do a great deal for the poor on my own, as well.”

“My mother often laments the day your family left the village, my lady. Of course, we understood completely that your husband had to take his place in Society.” Charlie seemed to know exactly what to say to get on Mama’s good side. “As you and Lady Henrietta and Lady Mary must have done, as well.”

“That is true, Charlie. We were loath to leave dear Haverhill, but our duty called us away.” Mama nodded. “When Lord Tollesbury received the sad news about his uncle and his sons…”

Mama could drone on and on about Father’s elevation, so Henrietta took the time, as she hadn’t earlier, to look truly closely at Charlie, noting all the changes between her twelve-year-old friend and the dashing gentleman who sat across from her, consuming tea and thin chicken sandwiches with gusto.

And a little bit more…

Charlie had ever had an appetite.

His eating habits seemed to have made no difference to his physical form, for Charlie was truly a fine figure of a man. The broad shoulders she had noted earlier. However, now she took in the sleek fit of his jacket, accentuating his build. His equally well-tailored trousers showed off his long legs and narrow waist. So narrow, in fact, he might have been wearing a corset. Except she would’ve bet a thousand pounds he’d never in his life do that. His neckcloth was of pure gray silk that matched his waistcoat exactly. Quite dapper for plain Charlie.

“Don’t you think that’s a shame, Henrietta?” Her mother’s sharp voice recalled her from her reverie.

Henrietta blinked, totally unaware of what bend the conversation had taken. Immediately, she stuffed a chicken sandwich in her mouth to give her time. She cocked her head and raised her eyebrows, as if to say, “Do pray go on.”

Happy Release Day for The Christmas Pact!

HAPPY RELEASE DAY!

The Christmas Pact, my most recent Christmas novella, releases today! Go grab your copy here!

You may recall that The Christmas Pact is an expansion of a flash fiction piece I wrote about thirteen years ago called The Kissing Tree in my anthology All Wrapped Up. It’s two scenes, first two children making a marriage pact in the snowy woods the day after Christmas, the second scene is years later as the same couple returns to the snowy woods. The Christmas Pact also gives you all the really good stuff in-between! Here’s the blurb:

To celebrate this festive occasion, I’m giving away five (5) e-copies of The Christmas Pact to random commenters on this blog post. The winners will be selected Sunday night and announced on this blog on Monday, November 25.

The Christmas Pact is now available on Amazon for just .99! Celebrate its release by grabbing your e-copy today!
