Seduction at the Christmas Court ~ A Royal Christmas Feast

Today I’m continuing with Christmas snippets from my medieval romance novella Seduction at the Christmas Court.

So far the snippets began with a boar hunt some days before Christmas in 1349. Geoffrey, Lord Longford and his wife Alyse have been summoned to the King’s Christmas court and this is the King’s favorite sport.

Today I’m switching to the Christmas Day feast, replete with the hunt’s bounty. A feast fit for a king, as it were.

Available on Amazon, Smashwords, and Barnes & Noble.

BLURB:

Alyse and Geoffrey, Lord and Lady Longford, have journeyed to the glittering Christmas Court of King Edward III in the year 1349 to wait upon the king and take part in some Yuletide merriment. However, when Geoffrey is suddenly called into the king’s service again, Alyse must remain at court, attending the queen and persuading her rebellious sister to accept an unwanted betrothal. When rumors of Geoffrey’s death arise, Alyse fends off an old suitor who wants to renew their friendship. But how long will he take “No” for an answer?

EXCERPT:

The Great Hall was alive with bustling servants, finely dressed men and even finer ladies, a troupe of merry minstrels plying their trade with harps, fiddles, and flutes to entertain the company as they ate. The royal family looked on benevolently from the dais. Despite the cold outside, the warmth of many bodies, mingled with the roaring fires at either end of the hall and all the flickering torches and candles, transformed the empty space into a cozy place.

Geoffrey led them to their places while Alyse craned her neck, eagerly peering about. Even though she’d lived at court for many months, she’d never been to such a glittering feast—fragrant candles, strings of green garland glinting with red and gold, platters of gold and silver, bejeweled courtiers dressed as sumptuously as possible. Even the most important banquet she’d attended last year paled in comparison to the display in front of her.

A steady stream of servants brought in platter after platter of food, extravagant dishes she’d never seen before: roasted crabs nestled on a bed of smoked eels, a capon studded with cloves—the beak still attached with a sugared cherry in it—a huge fish on a sea of salad greens, three different birds suspended in a towering aspic, a full peacock looking alive with all of its feathers sitting on a log of burnt sugar. Behind this parade of fantastic food came the boars, four huge pigs, roasted whole with apples stuffed in their mouths, carried in by four servants each. The spectacle took Alyse’s breath away.

The procession of dishes made its way around the tables and Alyse helped herself first to a stewed rabbit pie, the crust so flaky it melted on her tongue.

Geoffrey carved a leg from a pheasant baked with cinnamon and saffron, the tender meat slipping from the bones as he transferred it to his trencher. “I will say I wish for such birds on our estate, Alyse. They would grace our table often if so.”

“Are there no pheasants at Longford?” She spooned up the tender rabbit meat, savory and hot.

“Nay, those birds have never roosted on our lands. ‘Tis a pity.” He bit into the leg with relish.

“Think you the king might allow us to take a dozen or so to Longford to breed for meat?” Alyse scooped up several whitish balls from a passing platter. When she popped one into her mouth the flavor of onion and thyme burst in her mouth. “Mmmm…what are these tasty morsels?”

Geoffrey gave them a glance. “Calves testicles, I believe.”

“They are very good.” Alyse scooped up another one, savoring the delicate flavors.

Servants bearing one of the platters replete with boar stopped before them and Geoffrey

carved slices for both him and Alyse. He lay pieces of meat on their trenchers so large they hung over the sides.

“I think you took too much, my lord.” Alyse surveyed the vast slab of pork and sighed. She could never eat all of it.

“’Twas my boar. We will eat our fill of it.” Geoffrey laughed as he cut a hunk of meat, speared it with his knife, and popped it into his mouth.

“How could you tell ‘twas your boar? There were four killed it seems.” Alyse carefully cut the meat into more manageable pieces, then bit into one good sized chunk and chewed. The rich, juicy pork melted in her mouth. Truly a festive dish.

“I just claimed that one.” Geoffrey washed his mouthful down with a gulp of wine.

Laughing, Alyse savored the rest of her bite, wondering how she could eat two more of the pieces that lay on her plate.

The noisy chatter of well-satisfied guests swirled around them as the meal continued. A second course of succulent meats arrived, followed finally by a stream of towering confections made completely of sugar.

Alyse’s mouth dropped open as the servants carried in an entire nativity scene, complete with Baby Jesus, shepherds, cows, and the three kings riding on camels carved from blocks of sugar.

Geoffrey took one look at her and laughed. He put his finger beneath her chin and closed her mouth. “An ‘twere summer, you’d catch flies, my lady.”

“How wonderful, Geoffrey.” Alyse couldn’t take her eyes off the beautiful creation. “And to think ‘tis made entirely of sugar.”

“A sweet scene indeed.” He rubbed her back and warmth radiated down her body. “A happy mother and Child.” His wistful tone smote her heart.

“Fear not, my love. Soon I will hold your son as does the Blessed Mother yonder.”

“Aye, as God wills it, so it shall be, sweetheart.”

Weekend Writing Warriors ~ 12/20/20 It Happened Beneath the Mistletoe: She Must Summon More Words

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors!

This week I’m continuing snippets from my newly released Regency Christmas novella, It Happened Under the Mistletoe. It’s a companion piece to last year’s It Happened at Christmas, and is the story of Roger, Lord Daventry (friend of Nicholas, Lord Benberry from It Happened at Christmas) and Lady Sylvia Montgomery.

BLURB:

Christmas magic under the mistletoe…

Roger, Lord Daventry is contemplating a quiet Christmas at his home in Bath—until he literally falls at the feet of beautiful Lady Sylvia Montgomery. He and Lady Sylvia have an immediate attraction, but everyone is leaving London for their country homes for the holidays. Roger says his goodbyes, hoping to meet Sylvia again in the spring.

Lady Sylvia, however, has other plans.

Cajoling her parents into spending Christmas in Bath, Lady Sylvia is thrilled to meet Lord Daventry once more at the city’s Assembly Rooms. She and Roger manage a tryst under the mistletoe and Roger is ready to make a declaration for Sylvia’s hand. But when her father is called away on business, and her brother, Lord Chumleigh, arrives to chaperone Sylvia, Roger recognizes a man from his past who can sabotage his hopes of marriage to Sylvia.

To set the scene, Roger has come with his cousin to a winter’s ball in London to meet the young lady the cousin is enamored of. But Roger loses his cousin in the crowd, and ends up careening around the room, landing on his knees in front of someone in a white gown.

This week I’ve skipped ahead a few paragraphs. Sylvia has just finished a set with another partner and is perplexed that she cannot find Lord Daventry. We are in Sylvia’s POV.

EXCERPT:

The Waltz

“Perhaps I should not have spoken to you of that, my lady–our acquaintance has been extremely short, and we are about to part for several months–so I simply wished for you to know the depth of my admiration for you.”

“Oh.” She must summon more words before the dance ended. “I believe I understand, Lord Daventry. As I think of it, I am glad you did not dance with other ladies this evening.”

His head snapped back toward her, his eyes wide. “You are?”

“Yes.” Her confession came out a whisper.

And now to finish the scene :

The last strains of the waltz ended and, reluctantly, she released his hands.

He tucked hers in the crook of his arm and started them toward her mother.

Still rather dazed, she looked up just in time to see Mamma marching toward them, a mixture of sternness and outrage mingled in her face. Apparently, she’d finally discovered Sylvia had danced her first waltz in public.

“I think we should retire to the supper room, my lord. I believe we are in for a lecture on the scandalous nature of what we have done.” Mamma would likely say little in public, but a great deal in the carriage on the way home.

“As you wish, my lady.” Lord Daventry dutifully turned them to follow the throng descending on the supper room.

Yes, everything seemed to be working out exactly as she wished. Now she simply had to devise a plan to keep those wishes alive.

Seduction at the Christmas Court ~ “For My Lady’s Pleasure”

Today I’m continuing with Christmas snippets from my medieval romance novella Seduction at the Christmas Court.

So far the snippets began with a boar hunt some days before Christmas in 1349. Geoffrey, Lord Longford and his wife Alyse have been summoned to the King’s Christmas court and this is the King’s favorite sport.

Today I’m switching to the Christmas feast and a mummer’s play, holiday fare often found in the medieval Christmas celebration.

EXCERPT:

Grasping his hand, Alyse rubbed it between both of hers. “’Tis early days yet in our marriage, my lord. Only a year since we were wed and for half that time I carried Thomas’ child. Now that he no longer gives me suck, ‘twill not be long ‘ere I’ll have your child safe in my belly.”

With a sigh, Geoffrey smiled and grasped her chin, raising it so he could steal a kiss. His warm lips brushed hers, stirring her inner warmth as his touch always did. They pleasured each other so often surely she would quicken with his babe ‘ere long.

“This entertainment will be tedious. I would much rather retire for a good night’s bedding right now,” he whispered, the puff of his breath tickling her ear and sending prickles of excitement down her neck.

She laced their fingers together. “’Twill be finished ‘ere long, my love. Then you can wield your weapon with a vigor yon knights cannot.”

He laughed and drank deeply. “Aye, sweet Alyse. My skill with both weapons outshines any other knight.”

“As you will not want me to be judge of that, I think, I will demur to your claim, although I will test your skills again with the one blade ‘ere the night is done.”

At Geoffrey’s bark of laughter—so loud it turned heads on the dais their way—Alyse settled back to watch the mummers, her cheeks burning, but a pleasant anticipation building within as well.

The mummer playing St. George took the center spot in the Great Hall and began a sing-song rhyme that soon had the court laughing at its nonsense. A stream of knights—played in turn by the other mummers—approached, made their rhyming challenge, and were quickly slain by St. George, whose wielding of his sword became swifter and swifter. He slayed the knights in such short order that by the time he faced the final knight, he did no more than look at the Turkish knight than the man fell down, his toes jingling softly as he landed on the soft rushes covering the floor.

A burst of laughter and applause followed that performance as the quack Doctor shuffled forward, his “magic potion” in a large bottle, gripped in his hand.

Thoroughly engrossed, Alyse laughed and clapped her hands. She held her breath and leaned forward as the Doctor poured the potion down the throats of the slain knights, spoke his own rhyme over them, and one by one, they began to twitch and dance, the rush-strewn floor seeming to come alive as they did. The room resounded with merriment as all seven knights revived.

Loud applause burst out from the courtiers, many of whom threw gold and silver coins onto the floor. Geoffrey tossed a gold florin to the Turkish knight. “For my lady’s pleasure,” he called.

The man nimbly caught the coin and made a deep bow. “Thank you, my lord.”

With a lecherous grin, Geoffrey grasped Alyse’s arm and urged her to rise. “And now allow me to attend to my lady’s pleasure as well.”

Throbbing began low in her belly, her whole body awash in a wave of heat.

Grasping her hand, he led her quickly, willingly, from the Great Hall. As they entered the corridor that led to their chamber, he swept her into his arms and ran the last few steps. He opened the door, sank his mouth down onto hers, and stepped across the threshold.

Weekend Writing Warriors ~ 12/13/20 It Happened Beneath the Mistletoe: A Confession

EXCERPT:

All of a sudden, they were spinning, the steps of the waltz fortunately coming automatically as all Sylvia could think of was his mouth, so temptingly close to hers. What would it be like if he were to lean his head in toward hers and—

“I have a confession to make, Lady Sylvia,” he said, his voice bringing her abruptly out of her daydream.

“What is that, my lord?” Was he having thoughts of kissing her as well? Her cheeks suddenly heated, her stomach fluttering.

“When I said I was practicing at cards in the card room, I wasn’t telling you the whole truth.”

“Oh?” What else could he have been doing there?

“No, I did play several hands, but what I was really doing was waiting until it was time for us to share this dance.”

And now to finish the scene :

His gaze didn’t waver from her face.

“That is rather singular–why not join in the dancing? Partner with some other young lady?” Men were scarce at balls and needed to do their duty.

“I could have done, but,” he turned his gaze from her, “I didn’t wish to see you dancing with other gentlemen.”

“Oh.” His words surprised that squeak out of her. He was jealous of her dancing with other men? Her whole body must have blushed as heat shot through her.

EXCERPT FOR WEEK #12:

“When the plague struck Longford, it left no healer, no midwife living. When we arrived in May, I saw the need and filled it as best I could.” She gently placed the spider’s web on the wound, trying it for size.

Guy winced, then his features cleared. “It gives no hurt. I thought it would sting as a spider’s bite does.”

“Nay, it brings healing only.” Alyse tried to concentrate on her work, but his gaze, so close and intent, brought heat rising unbidden up her neck.

“You were ever the caring child, Alyse. Your sweet nature drew me like an arrow to a mark all your growing up years.”

She glanced at his face and immediately cursed her mistake–his deep chestnut eyes were liquid with desire.

“Pippa was always more docile than I.”

“Pippa is a child still and knows naught of pleasing a man,” he gripped her hand, “she cannot please me as well as you could, Alyse.”

Weekend Writing Warriors ~ 12/06/20 It Happened Beneath the Mistletoe: Nothing But Frights

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors!

This week I’m continuing snippets from my upcoming Regency Christmas novella, It Happened Under the Mistletoe. It’s a companion piece to last year’s It Happened at Christmas, and is the story of Roger, Lord Daventry (friend of Nicholas, Lord Benberry from It Happened at Christmas) and Lady Sylvia Montgomery.

I now have the blurb!

BLURB:

This week I’ve skipped ahead a few paragraphs. Sylvia has just finished a set with another partner and is perplexed that she cannot find Lord Daventry. We are in Sylvia’s POV.

EXCERPT:

Her last partner returned her finally to her mother, and even as Sylvia struggled for breath, fanning her hot cheeks, she looked about for Lord Daventry. Was he truly not attending the ball tonight? Had she made a mistake regarding his interest in her?

“Lady Kenniston, Lady Sylvia, good evening.” Lord Daventry appeared from nowhere, startling Sylvia so much she jumped, dropping her fan.

“Goodness,” Sylvia clutched her throat as he bent to retrieve the fan, “where did you come from?”

“The card room,” he grinned at her, “honing my skills for the next time we play.”

“Good evening, my lord,” Lady Kenniston said, giving him a nod then resumed her conversation with Lady Marton.

“May I escort you to the floor, Lady Sylvia?” he asked, offering his arm, and she hooked her hand around his elbow.

“You have given me nothing but frights this evening, Lord Daventry,” she said and lifted her chin.

And now to finish the scene :

“I do beg your pardon for startling you just now.” He frowned. “Have I done something else to upset you? I am sorry if so.”

“I have been looking for you all evening.” They had reached the floor where couples were lining up for a promenade. “It was very vexing to think you would not arrive in time for our dance.” She glanced at the line of couples. “What dance are we preparing for?”

“A waltz, I believe.” Lord Daventry’s tone was matter-of-fact, however his eyes gleamed as he searched her face.

“A waltz!” Sylvia tensed then looked over her shoulder, expecting to see her mother bearing down on her. “I have never danced a waltz before in public.”

EXCERPT FOR WEEK #11:

“Pippa, run and get vinegar and honey from the butlery,” Alyse said, straightening from inspecting Guy’s wound, then glancing from one corner of the room to another and frowning. Then she headed into the nearest corner, a dim recess of stone–good fortune had smiled on her. Carefully, she blew on the dusty spider web, cleaning it as best she could before gathering the sticky strands one by one until she had a good wad of them in her palm.

“What are you doing with that?” Guy asked and eyed her warily, scooting closer to the wall and drawing his leg away from her, wincing at the movement.

“Have your healers at Belle Chasse never used this remedy, Guy?” She knelt beside him, playing with the ball of threads, patting them into a length to match the wound.

“Nay, I remember no such thing,” he peered at her keenly, “and you are no healer, Alyse.”

She chuckled and pulled the cloth of his chausses away from the gaping slash. “I have become one through necessity.”

Weekend Writing Warriors ~ 11/29/20 It Happened Beneath the Mistletoe: The Most Advantageous Match

This week I’ve skipped ahead a few chapters, to a Winter Ball that is the end of the Little Season in London. So Sylvia and Roger have seen each other a few times. We are in Sylvia’s POV and she speaks to her mother first.

EXCERPT:

“Have you seen Lord Daventry this evening, Mamma? I have promised him the supper dance, but I do not believe he is here yet.”

Her mother nodded to an acquaintance before replying, “There are three more sets before the supper dance, Sylvia, so I am certain Lord Daventry will put in an appearance in plenty of time. He has seemed most attentive to you since we met, however, I do hope, Sylvia, that you have not set your cap at him so quickly. You are not technically out yet, not until next Season, and I insist you meet all the eligible young gentlemen in the spring before you decide which one will be the most advantageous match.”

Heartbeat speeding up, Sylvia shot her mother a scandalized glance. What on earth was Mamma talking about? “The most advantageous match is the one I make with the gentleman I love, Mamma–there is nothing else that matters.”

“Nonsense,” her mother turned a steely eye on her, “a young lady must weigh not only her affection for a gentleman, but his character, his status, and his wealth or at least his prospects. Lord Daventry seems to have the necessary qualities, I grant you, but you will not know who else might be just as attractive or eligible until the spring.”

And now to finish the scene :

“Your father and I will insist that you wait until your come-out before deciding on the gentleman who will be your husband.”

Sylvia opened her mouth to reply that she would not agree to such a stipulation, but shut her lips before she said a word. There was no reason to antagonize her mother at this point. If she did indeed set her heart on Lord Daventry, she would deal with her parents’ decree then.
