“Now That I’m Published…” Coping with Authorship Part 4: If Patience is a Virtue…

The song “If loving you is wrong, I don’t want to be right,” keeps running through my head as I write this post.  “If patience is a virtue, then what’s the corresponding vice?”  I want a BIG helping of whatever that vice is.  And what the heck does patience have to do with being newly published?

Everything!

Well, let me clarify.  Even if you’ve been published (book on the shelf or Kindle) for a while, this post will  speak to you because you will have patience issues with your both old and newly published work.

I have, of course, two short stories and a short story collection that are in the PUBLISHED category.  Done.  Game over.   (As I said in my first post in this series, not so much, really.)

Because now that you’re published, you have to wait for that book(s) to sell.  Talk about trying the patience of Job!  (See picture above. LOL) If your book isn’t climbing the charts or heading down the Amazon rankings towards that magical low top ten, then every moment is excruciatingly spent waiting, wondering if somebody’s buying a copy RIGHT NOW!  OR NOW!  There’s even a tool that facilitates the madness:  Novel Rank.

Don’t get me wrong.  Novel Rank is a great tool for authors interested in tracking sales of their works on Amazon.  The LL Book Review did an interview with Mario Lurig, creator of Novel Rank, that explains a lot about the site, it’s purpose and operation.

In my zeal, I started checking the Amazon rankings once a day; then it became three times a day; then every couple of hours.  That’s how anxious a newly pubbed author can be.

But this way lies madness!  Once I realized that my knowing what rank my book was at made absolutely no difference in how well it did (except as an incentive to promo the hell out of it), I’m back to checking once a day.

My point is, have patience.  Your sales will go up if you promote your work well and creatively or if you write lots of titles so the people who like your work have many things to read from your “pen.”  Knowing that your book ranked 357,000 on Monday at 3pm is not going to change one thing.  Have patience and give promotions time to work.  Give your writing time to work.  Have faith.  You got your book published, didn’t you?  Hang on just a little bit longer.

Double Your Pleasure: In-Between Days Blog Hop AND Save a Turkey: Gobble A Book Blog Hop Tour Here Today!

I’m certainly between Days and between birds–Liz Crowe’s Blog Hop stops at the Journal today and Save a Turkey:  Gobble a Book starts today.  What else can I do but encourage to all to hop through both blogs–double your pleasure, double your fun–and prizes!

Today is my day to post on the In-Bewteen Days Blog Tour.  And I’m so excited to tell you about my books, especially my newest release, All Wrapped Up: A Collection of Christmas Love Stories, and my soon to be released (two weeks and counting) Almost Perfect from Decadent Publishing.

The Christmas Collection contains four short stories all revolving around Christmas traditions and love–with both contemporary and historical settings.

Almost Perfect sets two people who hate each other down on a beautiful deserted island alone–haven’t I heard this plot before?  That’s what the heroine, Pam, would ask.  And she should know, she’s the movie buff!  In fact, she uses those movies as her survival blueprint!  With a few twists and turns along the way, however, Almost Perfect becomes the perfect vehicle for romance.

Blurb for Almost Perfect:

Pamela Kimball’s birthday present, a 1Night Stand adventure, promises to jump-start her life, put a new man in her bed, and help her forget her past.  Unfortunately, movie-buff Pam’s Pirates of the Caribbean fantasy takes an alarming wrong turn when she’s abandoned on a not quite deserted island—with ex-husband Roger Ware.

Forced by hunger to accept Roger’s offer of dinner,  Pam realizes the geek she married has transformed into one of the most charming, sexiest men she’s ever met. His newfound confidence—and hot body—re-kindles old fires.  A simple kiss leads Roger to challenge her to discover how much his lovemaking skills have improved, leaving Pam torn between self-preservation and burning desire.

With time running out before they’re rescued, Pam must decide if her heart can survive the consequences of becoming Roger’s “almost” perfect one-night stand.

Excerpt for Almost Perfect:

She inched into the lapping surf, searching for movement. Reflection off the water made this task harder than expected. Wasn’t the Caribbean supposed to be teeming with fish?  Now that’s something she’d had a lot of instruction in. Almost every marooned-on-an-island movie had a scene where the heroine learned to catch fish. Six Days, Father Goose, Blue Lagoon. All you needed was your hands and patience. She could do this.

Pam waded out further then stopped just before the water hit her now dry shorts. “Not gonna to have a damp crotch all night.” The words reminded her of exactly what she had hoped for tonight. “But not from wet shorts!” She headed back to shore to remove and drape them next to her shirt. The bandeau was a different story. Still damp, even after several hours, and uncomfortable. Might dry better if not next to her skin anyway. “Screw it!  Live dangerously.”

Standing as good as naked on the deserted beach, Pam smiled as the warm breeze caressed her bare body. The sense of being slightly naughty added to her delight in the sensual feel of the air as it dried her breasts. Her nipples peaked as the wind cooled them. She strutted down to the water’s edge to sink her toes in the sand, the salty tang in the air adding to the perfect moment.

“If you’re skinny dipping, you forgot to remove one very important piece of clothing.”

Pam whirled around. Roger stood on the beach behind her, a green bottle of Perrier in one hand. His gaze played up and down her naked torso and his salacious grin widened. “Mind if I join you?”

Blurb for All Wrapped Up:

Four short stories filled with romance at Christmas time.

The Present
A girl has to break the news to her sister’s boyfriend that he’s being dumped–on Christmas Eve– she finds herself a pawn for the boyfriend’s revenge.

Sing A Christmas Carol
A singing group’s decision to drop one member before the big carolling competition leads to an awkward situation.

The Kissing Tree
Two children discover a secret place on Christmas Day–with far-reaching effects.

‘Tis the Season
A Christmas dinner announcement shatters a young girl’s dream of a magical social season until a knight in shining armour proposes an alternate plan.

Like eating romance M&Ms.

Blurb for Heart of Deception:

Celinda Graham—young, naïve, passionate—is head-over-heels in love with Andrew Finley, Viscount Hurston and insists on marrying him. Unfortunately, Andrew’s family has been feuding with Celinda’s for generations.  When her father refuses to allow the marriage, Andrew proposes a scandalous way to get his approval.  But Andrew has a secret that may spell disaster to his plans if Celinda finds out he is not what he seems.

Blurb for Hog Wild:

When Lula Wolfendale’s motorcycle breaks down on her way to a Harley rally, she detours into tiny Shoshone, CA to find a new ride.  Seducing bikers Beau and Rob Hogue and commandeering their Harleys is easy; finding sexual satisfaction is a “hog” of a different color.  A Blue Phantom, to be exact, owned by the pair’s older brother, Jesse.  After brief, unsatisfying encounters with the first two Hogues, Lula approaches Jesse with a proposition:  a sexual contest for his Phantom, where Lula will emerge with either a bike to die for or the climax of her dreams.  Or can she possibly obtain both?

Six Sentence Sunday–11/13 Almost Perfect

Back for another snippet at Six Sentence Sunday?   Thank you to both first-time visitors and those who return each week.  I appreciate everyone stopping by.

My erotic Contemporary Almost Perfect releases in two weeks so I thought I’d share that with you this week and next.

Stranded on a desert island,  expecting her fantasy 1 Night Stand date–an Orlando Bloom-esque pirate ready to ravish her with her full permission–Pam finds instead her ex-husband.  While trying to make small-talk, their conversation turns  nasty.

“What I do with my alimony is my damn business, Roger. You wanted out of the marriage bad enough to pay substantially for it.”

“I think any man would want out of a marriage where his wife compares him to a lukewarm Pee-wee Herman, then likens his lovemaking skills to ‘Pee-wee’s Big Top Adventure with the good bits taken out.’”  Spoken in a soft, even tone, the words made Pam squirm, but there was no way to deny it—those were her exact words the night he threw her out.

“I just called it as I saw it, Roger.”

“And you saw it so infrequently I’m surprised you remembered.”

Did I say this got nasty?  Understatement of the year! LOL  Come back next week when things really heat up between these two!  And please visit the other Six Sentence Sunday snippets.  You’ll be glad you did!

Don’t forget:  my day to tell you all about my upcoming release is this Monday, November 14.  I’ll be having a giveaway featuring Almost Perfect, plus an Amazon gift card to kick off both the In-Between Days tour  AND the Save a Turkey: Gobble a Book Blog Hop.  Sure hope to see you on Monday!

Have a great Sunday!

Sweet Saturday Sample–11/12 Almost Perfect

Welcome back for another Sweet Saturday Sample!   Thank you to both first-time visitors and those who return each week.  I appreciate everyone stopping by.

Today’s sample  is something completely different from the samples I’ve been sharing.  My erotic Contemporary Almost Perfect releases in two weeks and though it is erotic and really rather R rated late in the book, the early parts are pretty PG.  So I thought I’d share those parts with you this week and next.

Pam has just been stranded on a desert island and is expecting her fantasy 1 Night Stand date–an Orlando Bloom-esque pirate ready to ravish her with her full permission.  While trying to dry her clothes she gets interrupted.

Feeling marginally better, she stalked out of the water then raced over hot sand to a haven of shady palms. She dropped the shoes and unbuttoned her shirt. It would dry better off and she disliked the feel of wet cloth next to her skin. The warm breeze made her consider removal of the top and shorts as well. A quick glance around told her she was alone. Her bikini panties she’d leave on—the wisp of polyester would dry instantly. Moments later, feeling wicked to be on a beach all but naked, Pam draped shorts and shirt over low-lying bushes. The towering palms shaded them, but the heat would bake them dry.

She contemplated the bandeau, wavering. It wasn’t like anyone would see her. “Screw it.” Pam crossed her arms, grasped the ends of the stretchy top and started to yank it over her head.

“Hello!” A faint shout sounded down the beach.

“Crap!” Pam pulled the top back down, thankful she hadn’t gotten it over her head. The wet fabric clung to her; if she’d taken it off, she’d never have gotten it back on. She crouched, grabbed her shorts and struggled into them.

“Hello?” The voice moved closer, definitely masculine.

Pam finished zipping the shorts and ducked lower behind the bushes. Was it the pirates?  Sounded too friendly for pirates. Maybe the Nautilus had come back. Doubtful. They hadn’t had time. Then it hit her. This was her one-night stand. She hadn’t specified her “date” had to be a pirate. Maybe they would spend their night here on a deserted island and be rescued by a pirate ship.

“Hello?  Is someone there?” His deep voice sounded pleasant and…somehow familiar. Too familiar.

“Crap!” Pamela shot up from behind the shrubs and stalked onto the beach.

The man headed toward her, still at least ten yards away.

Pamela put her hands, now balled into fists, on her hips and glared at his approach. “I am so getting a refund from Madame Eve!” she yelled when he came within earshot. “Roger!  What the hell are you doing here?”

If you’ve read the blurb for this story you know who Roger is, but what is he doing in the middle of her fantasy date?  Come by Six Sentence Sunday tomorrow for six more from this work and next Saturday for another sampling of Almost Perfect.  You can also join in the fun with your own sample next week.  And follow this link to Sweet Saturday Sample to find more “sweet” offerings.

Six Sentence Sunday 11/06–‘Tis The Season

I thought I would post six from my soon to be released contemporary, Almost Perfect.  But my Christmas collection, All Wrapped Up, released on Smashwords yesterday–Woo Hoo!

So I thought I would post six from one of the stories–an historical called ‘Tis The Season.   Great-Aunt Maude has just informed Jenny that unbeknownst to her, she has been betrothed to the son of a local titled family.  Please enjoy!

“When your mother refused to marry up, I swore none of your family would ever see a penny of my money. Then when you were born, she came to me and promised you had already been betrothed to young Thomas here—she showed me the betrothal papers.”

The rest of the table sat in stunned silence. Jenny looked down at her hands, clasped together so tight her knuckles showed white, all her dreams of excitement and romance during her Season exploded with her great-aunt’s words.

“I won’t do it,” she said, looking first at her mother, then her father, and finally at Aunt Maude. “You cannot make me do it.”

For more great sixes please go to Six Sentence Sunday.  Or join us for more fun next week with six of your own.

If you liked my six, All Wrapped Up is currently available at Smashwords for $0.99.  You can also sample some of my other work:  Heart of Deception, an historical romance, is available for purchase from Books To Go Now!, at the reduced price of just $0.99.  My erotic contemporary, Hog Wild, is available from New Dawning International Bookfair.  And both are available from Amazon, Barnes and Noble, and All Romance Ebooks

Below I’ve also included the cover for my latest erotic contemporary, Almost Perfect, due out November 25th from Decadent Publishing!

Have a great week!

Sweet Saturday Sample–11/05 The Present

Welcome back for another Sweet Saturday Sample!  I do appreciate everyone coming by and commenting very much.  Thank you also to first-time visitors.  I appreciate everyone stopping by.

Today’s sample  goes back to one of the short stories in my anthology of Christmas love tales called All Wrapped Up.  It’s the contemporary romance called The Present.  Here’s a bit more about Tess and Hal.  Hope you enjoy!

Meandering back into the living room, she plopped down on the sofa and peered dizzily at the wall clock. Ten o’clock. Maybe his flight had been delayed. Or better yet, maybe he was too jet-lagged to come over tonight. No need to rush over here, right from the airport—

A knock thundered on the door and Tessa jumped, then groaned and cursed her sister once more. She sighed, shook her head and dragged her feet all the way to the door. The cold air that rushed in made her shiver as much as the figure in the doorway.

“Tessa? Hi. What are you doing here?” The kind, low-pitched voice made Tess feel even worse. She would have to figure out some way to put Janice through this much hell some day.

“Hey, Hal. Come on in.” He walked into the living room, his head sweeping side to side. She shut the door and sent up a prayer. “Uh, Janice isn’t here. Can I take your coat?” Oh, crap! No, you don’t want him to stay! But he had it unbuttoned and handed it to her by the time she reached him.

“Where is she?” The puzzled frown on his face made Tess’s stomach churn. He cocked his head as big brown eyes burrowed into her. “I told her I’d come right over after my flight got in and we could catch the end of her office party.”

Swift and painless, like a surgeon. “She went without you, Hal. She said to tell you she didn’t think it would work out between you two.” God, she could barely say the words. What must it be like to hear them?

Hal stood in the middle of the room, his even-featured face hardening. His hand clenched on a small, brightly wrapped box Tess noticed only when the paper ripped under the strain. Oh, crap! He did get her a ring! I’m going to kill her myself.

He must have seen her eyes on the present because he gave a sharp laugh and thrust the box at her. “Here, Tess. You take it instead. Payment for services rendered.”

Hands trembling, she took the small box. “I can’t take this, Hal. You should return it.”

“Open it.”

Things still look a bit bleak for them don’t they?  Check out the anthology to see exactly what was in that festive little package. I hope you enjoyed another little breath of Christmas.

Thanks again for sampling my sweet.  Come back next week for another Christmas “Sweet Sample” or join in the fun with your own.  Follow this link to Sweet Saturday Sample to find more “sweet” offerings.

And come join me and some of my fellow Decadent Authors on the In-Between Days Blog Hop.  My day to tell you all about my upcoming releases is November 14, but each weekday sees a new blog member strutting her stuff for you–maybe even offering a prize or two!  Click my Blog Button on the right and hop on in.  Monday’s spotlight author is  Desiree Holt, so please visit her and check out her wonderful Decadent offering.

Have a great weekend!
