ALMOST PERFECT2

Pamela Kimball’s birthday present, a 1Night Stand adventure, promises to jump-start her life, put a new man in her bed, and help her forget her past.  Unfortunately, movie-buff Pam’s Pirates of the Caribbean fantasy takes an alarming wrong turn when she’s abandoned on a not quite deserted island—with ex-husband Roger Ware.

Forced by hunger to accept Roger’s offer of dinner,  Pam realizes the geek she married has transformed into one of the most charming, sexiest men she’s ever met. His newfound confidence—and hot body—re-kindle old fires.  A simple kiss leads Roger to challenge her to discover how much his lovemaking skills have improved, leaving Pam torn between self-preservation and burning desire.

With time running out before they’re rescued, Pam must decide if her heart can survive the consequences of becoming Roger’s “almost” perfect 1Night Stand.

In this snippet, Roger has just tricked Pam into baring her breasts for him.  Now he proposes a little skinny-dipping.

With one swift movement, he shucked his pants to reveal a hard, tanned body, complete with a serious erection.

Her mouth dropped open as the Perrier hit the sand. She stared at his fully aroused cock, a shiver of pure desire sparking through her before she dragged her gaze back up to his face.

Spotlight on Alien Adoration & Interview with Jessica Subject

JES-AA-BK1-300x450

I am so pleased and excited to have the fabulous sci-fi romance author and my good friend Jessica Subject back on the Journal today.  She’s graciously consented to an interview about her writing and her latest release, Alien Adoration.  (No one writes an alien/human romance like Jessica!)

Good morning, Jessica!  So wonderful to have you back on Jenna’s Journal.  Can you tell us a little bit about your current release?

Hi Jenna! Thank you so much for having me back on your blog! Hello everyone! Alien Adoration is the first book in the Alien Next Door series. It is about a down-in-her-luck young woman who has been fantasizing about her sexy playboy neighbor since the day he moved in. But she is too afraid of being rejected to even talk to him. Little does she know, he’s an alien.

What was your inspiration for this story?

Like you, I am inspired by songs. And this story was completely inspired by the song Spaceman by Bif Naked. I was cleaning, listening to this song, and the entire story idea came to me.

I am a fanatic about my character names. Are the character names special in any way?

Rachel and Luke have no significance to me. They were simply names that fit the characters. But, Luke’s name was originally Jake. The problem was, I wanted to use the same name for the hero in Accidental Romance. I had to decide which hero suited the name best.

Do you have plans for a sequel to this book?

Yes, there will be two more in the Alien Next Door series. I’ve already started book 2, Alien Admirer, which is about a young man (Rachel and Luke’s son) who is infatuated with his widowed and slightly older neighbor. He loves her two children like they were his own, but he has to convince their mother that he is not too young. He will never let her find out about his extraterrestrial DNA. And the third book will be about his sister, moving to the big city for school. She has a thing for a guy who lives on the same floor of the apartment as her, but nothing goes as planned when she asks him out.

Who was the first romance author and book you read?

Oh gosh. I cannot remember the first adult romance I read. Probably Nora Roberts. But as a preteen, I was reading teen romances such as Sweet Valley High by Francine Pascal. The very first I remember though, was No Time For Rabbits by Jane McFann. (Yes, YA did exist back when I was young. It just wasn’t labeled as such.)

Who has been the greatest influence on your writing?

There are so many people I could name here. I guess all of the authors I read have influenced my writing in some way. They’ve helped me to learn what I like to read, and what I don’t. And I try to apply what I like into my own writing. My critique partners, and my editors have also influenced my style.

What is the most exciting/daredevil thing you’ve ever done?

I’m pretty boring, I think. When I was a kid, I went on a zip line. And as an adult, I walked around a conservation area topless. Besides my husband, it was only the wildlife that saw me. I hope. LOL Though, that was before I had children.

Now, Lightning Round:

Beach or mountains? Mountains.

Boxers, briefs or commando? I love to answer commando, but in reality, boxer briefs.

Blond, brunette or redhead? (preferred men’s hair color) Any color works for me.

Would you rather skydive or scuba dive? Skydive.

Would you rather vacation in Hawaii, Vegas or London? Hawaii.

That was such fun!  I love the lightning round!  You find out such interesting things about authors!

Giveaway!!

Jessica Subject will be giving away a $25 Amazon e-gift certificate at the end of the Alien Adoration tour. Plus, three other winners will receive Alien Adoration swag packages. No purchase necessary. Contest is international. Must be 18 years of age or older. Just sign in to Rafflecopter with Facebook or your email address on any post during the tour to be entered. Odds of winning are dependent upon how many people enter during the tour. Good luck!

Erotic dreams fill her with need…

Night after night, Rachel fantasizes about her sexy, playboy neighbor. But in her small town, no one changes, least of all the bad boy next door. But when Luke rescues her not once but twice from disastrous dates, she dares to believe her knight in black leather armor may be the right man for her after all.

Until she learns the truth…

Life on Earth has never been easy for Luke. Stranded as a little boy, he struggled to craft an existence for himself, but he never forgot the first human he met–and he never stopped wanting to see her again. Returning to Hanton, Luke longs for Rachel. Yet, nothing goes as he plans, and Rachel barely notices him. Convincing her he isn’t like all the jerks she’s dated means telling her the truth, but can she handle it?

Can she overcome her fears, or will she deny her alien adoration and leave him stranded once more?

Excerpt:

“Need a lift?”

The voice was deep and masculine, one she didn’t hear very often, but would recognize anywhere. Luke. Wonderful! He wouldn’t talk to me before, but now that I’m topless and sopping wet, he notices me.

She circled slowly to stare at the leather-clad figure sitting atop his motorcycle. The visor of his helmet covered most of his face, leaving only his luscious lips and deep, jutting chin, covered in light stubble, exposed. What would they feel like against her lips? Between her legs? Her body tingled.

“Earth to Rachel. Do you need a lift, or should I leave you here in the pouring rain?”

Oh God, he knows my name. Since they’d never actually talked—she’d only heard him greeting his dates—her name on his lips came as a surprise. “Um, yes, I’d appreciate a ride.” On his Harley, and if she was lucky, in his bed. Anywhere. Her romance-first rule didn’t apply to him. He’d already seduced her plenty in her dreams.

Remaining on his bike, he yanked a helmet from his saddlebag and held it out to her. “What happened to your pretty blouse?”

Pretty blouse? He’d seen her earlier? “I….” Fluttering rolled through her stomach. “I don’t want to talk about it.”

She grabbed the helmet from him, fit it over her soaked hair, and buckled the chinstrap. Straddling the seat behind him, she fumbled with her hands, wondering where to place them, no bar behind her to hold on to. Oh, what it would be like to wrap her arms around him, lean against his wide back covered in leather. But what if he didn’t want her to touch him?

Luke pushed off from the curb. “I suggest you hold onto me or you’re going to fall off.”

The bike lurched forward with a roar. She clasped her hands around his waist, her fingers coming together temptingly close to his manhood, cheek pressed to his cowskin jacket. His deep chuckle reverberated across her skin.

“I told you to hang on.”

And she could lean on him forever. Being so close to him with pure raw power between her legs moved her better than any fantasy she had ever created. But what is going to happen when he takes me home? Or will he invite me to his house instead?

She pressed her lips together. Sure, she wanted to know what lay under his tight pants, but she refused to be another conquest. I can’t handle it.

He drove into her driveway too soon, leaning the bike over enough for her to slip off. She removed the helmet and handed it back to him. “Thank you. I appreciate the ride.”

Tucking the helmet away, he nodded. “You want to come over for coffee?”

That and more. Though she refused to go anywhere in her state of disarray. “Um, no, I’m kind of wet.”

“Another time, then?”

She nodded. Shit, why did I say no? They could strip down together and have all kinds of fun.

But he drove away before she had a chance to retract her words.

Excerpt:

~When the chips are down, the buffalo is empty~

Am I a flake? Sort of. But I’m trying to change. My grandfather has property tax issues, and what troubles Granddad, troubles me. Good thing I’ve held down a steady job for months. A major big deal. Not the getting a job part—I’ve had lots—but the held down aspect. Somehow, I always end up unemployed, but

Today, I am Rylie Tabitha Keyes, chauffeur to the seniors at Fountain of Youth Retirement Home

It was dawn Sunday as I eased my employer’s van from one freeway onto another. After that, I concentrated on the wet asphalt up ahead. I didn’t want to think about my job history or our financial woes. Instead I focused on the summery sunrise over the Cascade Mountains due east. I stared at it a moment, charmed by its contrast to the more typical Bellevue, Washington gloom brooding overhead.

I should’ve been asleep, but I needed to toss trash from a fundraiser rolling around in the back of the van. Leland Rosenberg, my boss at Fountain of Youth Retirement Home, had asked me to dump the bags at his second business, Rosenberg Laboratory, as FoY’s Dumpsters were full from a recent bathroom remodel. His mood had been edgy, kind of insistent I dispose of them last night. I confess, before I could carry out this task, a minor traffic accident and an all-important overnight obligation had waylaid me. I didn’t bother to sigh over how blunders always seemed to pepper my work performance. Some things were fated to be. After all, I slogged at my job for money not joy. It isn’t that I don’t like working at FoY, it just isn’t my dream gig. You see, I yearned to be a private detective, a Veronica Mars 2.0. Problem is, my grandfather is against the idea. Dead set against it.

So with the stench from the trash bags mounting, I steered FoY’s van onto the off-ramp and headed toward Rosenberg Laboratory just off the freeway exit. My mind was filled with thoughts of a steamy shower, maybe a few hours of shut-eye before punching the clock at nine. I stared forward, squinted. And iced over. Up ahead. Wrong-way traveling. A panel truck advanced, peeling rubber.

Faster.

Closer.

Zeroed in to hit me.

I whipped the van off the road, the red, white, and blue panel truck whizzing past. I slammed on the brakes, fighting to control the wheel. I wrestled with it, panicked, my mind flashing on one fortunate thing:  no seniors were in the van.

Tons of hazards burst before my eyes. I struggled to absorb them. A mangled guardrail zigzagged up ahead; its many gaps from other out-of-control vehicles big as life. Worse was the wall of giant Douglas-firs growing beyond, lower trunks scarred, limbs low and swaying.

I was going to careen through the railing.

I was going to hit the trees.

I was going to die.

Book Summary

Career chameleon, Rylie Keyes, must keep her current job. If not, the tax assessor will evict her ailing grandfather and auction off their ancestral home. When a senior she shuttles for a Bellevue, Washington retirement home winds up dead in her minibus, sticky with a half-eaten s’more, head clad in a cellophane bag, and a pocketed complaint letter accusing her of driving by Braille, her goal to keep her job hits a road bump.

The deceased was thought to be a penniless Nazi concentration camp survivor with a silly grudge against Rylie. However, the victim has enemies who will stop at nothing to keep their part in the murder a secret.

Forced to dust off the PI training she’s kept hidden from her ex-detective grandfather, Rylie must align with a circus-bike-wheeling Samoan to solve the murder, all while juggling the attentions of two very hot police officers.

Sweet With A Bit of Heat: Romance Author E. Ayers in The Spotlight

It is my great pleasure to introduce (or perhaps re-introduce) you to a wonderful author who also a great friend of mine.  I met E. Ayers at my local RWA chapter several years ago and we’ve been chattering away about romance and publishing ever since.  She’s here today with her most recent novel, A Calling in Wyoming, and her soon-to-be-released A Child’s Heart, the next in her River City series.  And don’t forget to leave a comment!  She’s going to do a giveaway. 🙂

ACIW 500x750

Wow! May has so busy and now it’s almost over. Do you happen to know a way of adding a few more hours to each day? I really need them.

You asked what I’ve been doing. Where should I start? Well, my fourth, contemporary, sweet western, A Calling in Wyoming was published earlier this month. My other westerns have all landed on Amazon’s top sellers list and kept me on that list for seven months. Naturally, I have my fingers crossed for this one, too.

I wrote this one based on a friend’s son. He’s handsome, single, and the kind of guy every mother hopes her son grows up to be. But at twenty-seven, he’s starting to think about settling down, except he’s not met the right gal.

He looked at me one day and asked if I’d write a romance for him. I think he was asking if I knew someone who would be perfect for him. Since I don’t, I let his question rattle around in my head until a story formed.

It was easy to borrow his good looks, but I realized that I couldn’t ignore his strong Christian beliefs. So I put his faith to the test. He hasn’t finished reading the book yet, so I have no idea what his reaction will be.

Slowly family and friends are voicing their opinions. At the moment, it’s rather divided. Some are saying, yes to his stay in Creed’s Crossing and the others are saying no way would he accept such an offer. And the reaction over the lovely young woman I created for him…? Mixed.

It was loads of fun fictionalizing someone. The hero in the story, is not the real man. If I put twenty young men in a room, you’d probably be able to figure out which man fits the hero’s description, but that’s where it ends. He knows I put him in cowboy boots and let him ride a horse, but that’s all he knows, and no one is telling him the rest. He has to read it! To him, it’s hoot that I’ve made him into a cowboy.

So that’s the story behind the story of A Calling in Wyoming. It’s the perfect length for a rainy afternoon or a quiet evening, slightly less than 40,000 words.

It’s available on Amazon (Kindle), Barnes and Noble (Nook) and on Smashwords in a variety of formats.

As soon as A Calling in Wyoming was published, I did a publishing workshop for writers. Then I turned my attention to my next River City book, A Child’s Heart. It had come back from the editor with a long list of corrections. (Someday I might remember to use all the commas.) With luck, the book will begin to show up at various e-book retailers the first week of June. This one is the sixth River City novel. They do not need to be read in order because the glue that holds them together is the city itself.

River City is where I started writing romances. They have strong mainstream overtones with the happily-ever-after that people want in a romance. They are all young urbanites trying to make River City a better place. To use an old term, they are the young-movers-and-shakers of the community.

RC6 trent&cassie 500x750A Child’s Heart is about Trent Callahan, a widower with a young son, Shawn, who needs heart surgery. Married at eighteen, Trent’s a blue-collar worker, living with his mom and trying to support his son. Except, he finds himself falling in love with the curator of the River City Museum.

Dr. Cassandra “Cassie” Jones is older and has her PhD. Confident, and competent, she portrays a very polished exterior. But under it, she’s a vamp (as in seductive), and Trent is about to have some lessons in history that would make Cleopatra blush.

Just for fun, I thought you’d like to read the excerpt of their first kiss. Kisses can be delicious and occasionally they can have an interesting and unexpected effect on the body.

Excerpt from A Child’s Heart:

Cassie pulled in front of a small home that looked exactly like every other house in the working class neighborhood. Tiny, cookie-cutter houses sat on postage-sized lots. The Callahan home was painted a pale yellow with dark gray shutters and trim. The grass was recently cut, and a few petunias were planted around the base of the lamppost. She parked her car and drew in a deep breath as she gathered up the two books.

“Hi,” she said, when Trent opened the door. “I brought something for Shawn.”

“Come on in. He’s not here right now. My mom took him shopping for some slippers and a robe. He’s going to need them for the hospital. They say he’ll be there for a while.”

“Oh, I’m sorry. I should have called first. Tate gave me your address, and I thought I’d stop on the way home, since you weren’t very far out of the way.”

“You live in the area?”

“Not really. I have an apartment in Sweet Grandview.”

“This is not exactly on your way home from the museum.”

“It’s not, but it’s not that far, either.” She forced another smile.

He glanced at his watch. “They should be home soon. Would you like a glass of iced tea?”

“Thanks. I’d appreciate that.” She gazed at Trent standing there in his work uniform, his name written in an oval under the embroidered company name. “What exactly does River City Manufacturing manufacture?”

“Countertops. We measure, custom cut, and install counters for both commercial and home use.”

“Oh. What do you do?”

“Everything. Mostly, I handle the computer and oversee the shop. It’s a rather involved process. The measurements are dropped into the computer, which then runs the saws that cut the counters.”

She followed him through the tiny house to the modern kitchen. “Cute kitchen.”

“Thanks. My mom loves it. I tore out what existed a few years ago. I made the cabinets from scratch and the countertops are leftovers from a large job the company did awhile back.”

“Granite?”

He nodded, opened a cabinet, and withdrew two glasses. “I’ve got a small woodshop in the backyard.”

“I’m impressed. You do beautiful work.”

“Thanks.” He handed her a glass of iced tea.

She put the two books on the counter and accepted the glass. Her fingers touched his, sending a spark though her body. Gazing into his eyes, she smiled. A golden blonde lock fell across his forehead, and she noticed slight dimples when he returned the smile.

Broad shoulders filled his shirt, and golden hair covered his forearms. Desire filled her as she stared at the man with gray-blue eyes.

He returned the stare and she found herself lured to him. Golden-brown eyelashes framed his penetrating gaze. Taking a sip of the sweet liquid only enhanced the burning inside her. His fingers wrapped around the glass and removed it from her clutch as his mouth covered hers.

Sweet, probing kisses caused her to close her eyes, as she was drawn to him by the magnificent sensation that streamed through her body. Her hands found his shoulders, as his arms locked her into his embrace. Her hips swayed against the soft bulge in his pants. His hand on the small of her back pulled her tight to him. The room vanished. All that was left, were two bodies pressed together.

His tongue danced with hers as her pelvis rode his hardening length. Her breasts burned. She clawed at the fabric covering his shoulders. It was primal and she lost herself in the ancient ritual. Heat flowed through her until it peaked, causing a groan to escape her throat. Her lips unlocked from his, and she buried her face into his chest. The course material was permeated with the pungent smell of perspiration and oil. Inhaling deeply, it was nauseating, exciting, and very masculine. Reality hit, sending a jolt through her system. She let go of him and turned away. “I’m so sorry. I can’t believe I just did that.”

His hands grabbed her shoulders and pulled her back to him. “I’m not sure exactly what happened, but it was terrific.” His breath flowed over her face as he spoke. “I should be apologizing to you. I’ve never spontaneously kissed someone before.” His voice was deep and raspy. “I’ve heard it said that you can tell a lot from a first kiss, and that was one hell of a first kiss.”

“I’m so embarrassed.”

“Why? It was awesome.” He pulled her tight to his body.

Her gaze locked with his as his lips once again touched hers. Her knees weakened and her body trembled. Wanting to flee, she found herself riveted in place. His tongue found hers. Heat coursed through her as the room began to swim. A gray cloud enveloped her until there was nothing.

***

“Hi, welcome back. Feeling any better?” Trent asked.

Cassie looked up at the man kneeling beside her. “What happened?”

“You fainted. I was about to call 9-1-1. You’ve been out for a few minutes.” She started to sit up, but he gently pushed her back down. “You’re not going anywhere. Take a couple of deep breaths.”

“I’m fine.”

He ran a finger across her cheek as he stared into her crystal blue pools. “You remind me of a china doll, perfectly beautiful.”

“Please, let me get up.”

“Slowly.” He offered her his hand.

Making her sit at the kitchen table, he brought her the glass of iced tea and then pulled out a chair across from her. As he sat, a grin split his face and erupted into a chuckle. “I’ve kissed many a woman in my life, but I’ve never had that effect on one.”

“I’m sorry, I have no idea what came over me.”

“There you go apologizing again for something that requires none.”

“I’ve never been that lost in a kiss, and I’ve never fainted before in my life. No, that’s not right, I fainted one time after I gave blood when I was still in college.”

“Gave blood on an empty stomach?”

“Probably.”

“Bet you’ve got a empty stomach now.”

She shook her head, as if trying to clear it. “Maybe. I ate a banana at some point today.”

“That’s it?”

“Ah, I think so. I skipped breakfast and drank a pot of coffee at work.”

“You’re not leaving here until you’ve eaten something nutritious and filling.”

Just in case you didn’t notice, my writing spans from sweet to a mild amount of heat. To me, it’s all about the story, and my writing falls into what I call Main Street, America. You aren’t going to have to worry about the eight-year-old looking over your shoulder if you are reading one of my western novellas, and the fifteen year old isn’t going to read anything that they don’t already know about in my River City novels, although I do consider my River City books to be mature reading.

Me? You want to know more about me? Let’s see if I can find some little tidbits for you.

Jenna and I know each other. Okay, between us we probably know half of the romance authors in the world, but unlike them, Jenna and I can actually share an afternoon and a good cup of coffee. Do you know how much she loves chocolate? We’re both chocoholics. But Jenna might be worse.

I’m a widow and was married to Prince Charming for almost thirty-seven years. Now I rattle around in a humongous pre-Civil War home in a historic district. That just means at any given time something is wrong. During the coldest days this winter, my heating system failed (twice!) and parts had to be ordered. (Yes. I was prepared. I own a small, oil-filled space heater.) Having down quilts, two dogs, and a cat helped to keep me warm as I slept. Of course, that meant very little bed space for me! Do you have any idea how much space on a bed that a cat can take up, especially when plastered against you? How do they do that? I’m not sure if I’m spoiled or my animals are spoiled.

I have a question for you. We all know that Jenna writes stories that will singe your monitor, but do you enjoy a story with less heat or one that closes the bedroom door?

Answer the question, or leave a comment and you might win a copy of A Child’s Heart. Don’t forget to leave your email address if you’d like to win a copy.

Book Blitz: Mail Order Man by Heather Gray

_5790414

A well-meaning friend places an ad to find a mail order husband for Sarah, the proprietress of Larkspur’s stage and mail office. Sarah, who is generally quiet and reserved, doesn’t know about the ad and has no idea what to do with all the people that are showing up in her community. Before long, the town is overrun with men and mail alike. Sarah is trying to avoid some men who have accosted her on the street when she stumbles into Samuel. Through long days spent together at the stage office, some very adventurous pots of coffee and a shared faith, the two become friends.

Sarah knows that Samuel is hiding something from her, something important, but that doesn’t stop her heart from leaping wildly into love. Lacking the confidence to trust her heart, Sarah wars with herself over the feelings she can no longer deny. When some of the men who have come to town show their true intentions, a shootout follows. Sarah finally gets answers to many of the questions circling through her mind. One question remains, though. Where will her mail order man go when the dust settles?

Excerpt from Mail Order Man:

Right then Claudio and Cesar came through the door. Both boys chimed a “Good morning!” in Sarah’s direction as they headed straight for the coffee on the stove. Sarah saw their intent and inwardly cringed. Not only was she not sure about how many scoops of grounds she’d put in, but the coffee had been percolating much longer than normal because she got distracted with the letters.

Samuel had his back to the stove and did not see the boys as they each poured a cup of coffee. Sarah was about to warn them as Claudio, the middle boy at age sixteen, took a big swig of the hot brew while Cesar, the youngest, opted to blow on his first. Claudio’s eyes grew wide as he swallowed. “Miss Sarah, I do believe that’s the best coffee you’ve ever made. That’s the kind of coffee vaqueros drink!”

Samuel visibly perked up at the mention of coffee. Sarah was sure he couldn’t know a vaquero was a Mexican cowboy and that they drink their camp coffee strong. If he understood what the boys were saying, he definitely wouldn’t be in a hurry to get a cup of his own. Cesar finally took a drink of his coffee. Sarah could see him trying not to make a face as he swallowed the brew. “Vaquero coffee for sure, Miss Sarah. Papa would be proud.”

Sarah had barely started to warn, “Uh, Samuel…” when he took a big gulp of the coffee Claudio had poured for him. She watched the shock on his face as he first paled and then grew red. His eyes flew wide as he tried desperately to swallow the coffee. He finally ran out the front door and spit the coffee out over the edge of the stage platform.

The boys could not contain their howling laughter as Samuel walked back into the stage office, wiping his mouth with the back of his hand.

About Heather Gray

Aside from her long-standing love affair with coffee, Heather’s greatest joys in life are her relationship with her Savior, her family, and writing. Years ago, she decided it would be better to laugh than yell. Heather carries that theme over into her writing where she strives to create characters that experience both the highs and lows of life and, through it all, find a way to love God, embrace each day, and laugh out loud right along with her.

Weekend Writing Warriors: 05/26/13 Speed Date: The Evil Gabriel

WEEKEND WRITING WARRIORS

Welcome back to the Weekend Writing Warriors again.  And Happy Memorial Day Weekend to everyone!

Once again I’m taking my 8 from my new WIP, Speed Date.  I’ve skipped ahead in this scene:  Roberta is at Gabriel’s apartment for dinner, although she’s only just met him.  In this scene, he handed her a glass of wine then made an outrageous statement. (For the previous post–and that outrageous statement–click here.)

I was caught with a mouthful of wine and nowhere for it to go.  He had said that on purpose and it would serve him right if I spewed all over his expensive carpet.

“If it comes out your nose, Bertie, I promise you I will laugh.”

He grabbed my glass as I bolted for the kitchen, making it to the sink just in time.  Laughter rolled out of me as the not-too-dry wine dripped from my lips.  I grabbed  a dish towel to save my blouse.  “That was evil, Gabriel.”  I wiped my face; my eyes were now streaming with tears of laughter too.

Thanks so much for coming by!  I’ll be at my annual writer’s retreat next weekend–four glorious days of non-stop writing!  So I won’t be posting on either SSS or WWW as we are out in the woods with no internet.  The week after I’m back to SSS, so please come by for more of Speed Date then.

Remember, I’m taking a semi-hiatus by alternating weeks between WWW and Sweet Saturday Samples this summer.  And the alternating seems to be working–I finished the revision of Betrayal yesterday and it’s off to my editor!  Today I start a new WIP! I guess a vacation is  a good thing. 🙂

Right now, you can click here to hop on to more Writing Warrior posts!  And thanks for coming by!

L is for Love at First Sight

I really am a fan of the “Love at First Sight” romance trope.  I’ve written several stories and novels that have characters who see the man or woman of their dreams and Boom, it hits them like a ton of bricks.  This is the one!

I hadn’t really thought about why this trope is one of my favorites until I looked at the date of this post:  May 24.  That date stands out to me each year because that was the date I fell in love at first sight.  When I was 13 years old.

My cousins had a beach band and they played a Battle of the Bands on May 24th.  I went to see them with two of my girlfriends (under the chaperonage of my aunt and uncle), so excited to be out at a “teen” function for the first time.

When the band finally played we were all attention and I noticed for the first time the very

cute singer in my cousin’s band.  And I mean Very Cute!  Youngest in the group (I later learned he was 15), he was my dream come true.  When he opened his mouth to sing I began to melt.  Then the band performed “You’ve Made Me So Very Happy” by Blood, Sweat, and Tears and at the end this dreamboat went down on his knees.

And that was it.  I fell hook, line, sinker, boat and motor in love with him.  I have always been a sucker for romance and theatre and that little gesture went straight to my teenaged heart.  The crush lasted for several years and I was never very subtle about it (that thought makes me cringe to this day).  The band broke up and I didn’t see him for probably fifteen years.

One Christmas we re-met each other, went on a date, and that was it.  Fizzle.  No spark, no chemistry.  Don’t get me wrong, he’s a great guy, and I do see him occasionally when the band gets back together to play.  I smile when I see him, secretly pleased to have had that ‘love at first sight’ experience.

That experience was so intense that I can still feel the depth of emotion I went through as a teenager. I’m able to tap into those emotions and channel them into some of my writing.

The infatuation Alyse feels for Thomas at the opening of Betrothal is based in part on my own first-hand experiences of a “crush.”

So May 24th will always be special to me. Do you have a certain date or a love at first sight experience?  Please share on my special day!
