Medieval Monday: Spotlight on Andrea Cooper

MedMon

Welcome back to Medieval Monday, the hop for readers who love medieval romance.  This week I’m featuring my friend and fellow medieval author Andrea Cooper with her wonderful medieval Viking tale.  Next week, on November 3rd, I’ll be hosting Jill Hugely.

But now, here’s Andrea’s Viking Fire a thrilling romance set in ancient Ireland with love, treachery, swordplay, and a touch of magic!

eeb1eb981367d8228ecd803dc39ce173_f95q

In 856 CE, Ireland is a land of myth, magic, and blood. Viking raiders have fought the Irish for over half a century. Rival Irish clans promise only betrayal and carnage.

Kaireen, daughter of Laird Liannon, is suddenly forced into an arranged marriage with her sworn enemy, a Viking. She refuses to submit. With no mention of love, only land and the protection of her clan, she endeavors to get her betrothed banished from her country. Will love find its way around her stubborn heart?

Bram, the Viking, finds himself without future or inheritance as a younger son in his family. A marriage to the Laird’s daughter would grant him land if he swears fidelity and if his men will fight along with the Liannons against any foe—Irish or Viking. However, the Laird’s feisty daughter only holds animosity for him and his kind. Is marriage worth the battle scars of such a relentless opponent?

With the blame for a rival laird’s death treacherously set against the Liannons, Kaireen and Bram must find a way to lay aside their differences as an unforeseen darkness sends death snapping at their heels.

Excerpt:

“I renounce Father for this.” Kaireen threw the elderberry gown.

“Shame on you and your children for speaking such.” Her handmaid, Elva, gathered the damask and then dusted off the rushes. “It’s a wonder one of the clim has not scolded you from your hearth for such talk.”

“No, curse Father for a fool.” She plopped on her bed and a goose feather floated away. With a huff, she leaned against the oak headboard. Red curtains puffed like a robin’s chest around oak poles supporting her wooden canopy.

Her bare feet brushed against the stone floor.

“You know your da arranged a marriage within a season.” Elva smirked.

Kaireen shook her head. “To another land holder,” and waved a hand in disgust, “not t-this heathen. Twice they raided our land in the last month alone. Now father wants me as wife to one of them?” She clenched her fists. “No, I will not marry this Viking.”

Elva smiled, reminding Kaireen of the rumors of her handmaid’s uncanny foresight.

Whispers of Elva making strange things happen and often blamed as the cause of

Kaireen’s stubborn refusal to behave as a laird’s daughter should.

“You’ve not seen him yet.” Elva wiggled her brows.

“So?” Kaireen shrugged. “I would like to never see him.”

“Well then, would you not like to know if you have a handsome husband or not?” She waited for her response, but Kaireen scowled. Elva chuckled. “I would rather get a good look at him now than the morning after.”

Kaireen’s ears heated. “I am not marrying.” She shook her head for emphasis. “So there will be no morning, nor night, nor wedding.”

“If he is handsome, I may fight you for him.” Elva smiled, deepening the wrinkles around her eyes.

“Welcome to him either way.” Kaireen laughed.

Andrea R. Cooper writes fantasy, paranormal, historical and contemporary romance.

Her favorBio Pic 300x400ite childhood memories revolved around creating vibrant characters for her friends, and then acting out their adventures. Inside her fantasy worlds of darkened forests, dragon-filled glades, and iced islands, nothing was banned. From the ethereal Elvin to the most maligned Vampires, all were welcome in her fictional realities, a stark contrast to her home, where the magical and mythical was forbidden.

Divorced and disillusioned of love and believing all the love songs and books exaggerated, she put aside her creativity for life. Many years past before characters, from the familiar to the freshly conceived, came to her again, but this time teasing at a new passion, the written word.

Gradually, her real life hero brought love and magic back into existence. During the time when her characters were getting reacquainted, the love of her life was showing her that true love never gives up and rekindles no matter how many times others attempt to extinguish it. Today, she is happily married with three children.

Andrea believes in the power of change and delighting in each moment. But most fervently, she believes in the magic of love and imagination again.

Jenna’s 411

Welcome to this week’s installment of Jenna’s 411.

Sorry I’m late again, but I’m in another production which means more late rehearsals! So on with a brief 411.

tetl-frontBook Chat

My most exciting news this week is that I have entered Time Enough to Love into Romance Writers of America’s RITA Award competition. This is the Oscars of the romance world, so I’m pretty psyched, even though I’m realistic about my chances. Still, to be in the competition alone is a big deal to me–I usually don’t do contests, but I thought Time Enough to Love deserved a chance, despite the extremely long odds.  I’ll keep you informed about my little book’s progress along the way.  Wish me luck!

eyeballsOn the Home Front:  Halloween

Time for Halloween treats at my house.  We used to have big parties for Halloween when my girls were young and I loved making all these scary treats.  I get to do  that again this week because my theatre group at school is having a party on Wednesday, and I’m taking some good and scary treats, like these ghoulish eyeballs.  I LOVE Halloween!

Jenna Fun Fact of the Week

The_boy-friend_1954bwayEven though I hate being on stage (I’m a director, not an actor), I did play Maisie, the second lead, in a community theatre production of The Boyfriend one summer when I was home from college.  I decided I wanted the role and auditioned my heart out to get it.  And I actually had fun!  Got to dance the Charleston with one of my old flames from high school and even better, didn’t suffer from stage fright at all. 🙂  I’m really glad I got to have that experience, although I’ll take the director’s any time over the limelight.

That’s all  for this week.  Short and sweet.  Come back next Wednesday for more (hopefully lots more) news from Jenna. 🙂

Cover Reveal for To Save a Lady and Interview with Patricia Preston

patricia preston cover

I want to say thanks to Jenna for having me as a guest and helping me reveal my new cover to the world! TO SAVE A LADY is available for pre-order on Amazon and will be released on November 2nd.

It is completely my pleasure, Patricia. 🙂  Congratulations on such a beautiful cover and now on with the interview!

Tell us about yourself

I don’t have a cozy story. I’ve had both hard times and good times. Fortunately, I’m in one of the good times for now. I consider myself a survivor. I survived being a single mom and spending most of my life trying to make ends meet. I’ve survived a rare form of cancer and depression. Writing is how I cope, or maybe it is the way I escape. Either way, I’ve been writing since I was a kid, and I’ll probably be writing in the hereafter. I’ve won a few writing awards and I’ve seen my work in print. But I feel like this is a whole new era for me now because, for the first time ever, writing is the day job.

Tell us about your journey with this book

Actually, it started many years ago. This was a story I had always wanted to write. I had gone to New Orleans and I loved the French Quarter. Over time, I had some false starts with this project. I tried making a novella out of it and that was a mistake. Finally, I gave up on it. I think a big factor in putting it aside was the historical market at the time. Then, things changed in publishing and I decided to write this series. To make it everything I’d ever wanted it to be. I’ve had a great journey writing TO SAVE A LADY and I’m loving the next book even more.

What did you do to research the time period for this series?

Okay, I’m gonna admit I love research. I actually spent about two years doing research. I have numerous books on New Orleans during the early 1800’s and several on the military history of the War of 1812. I had books on Creole houses and buildings in New Orleans, but my on-site research in the French Quarter was so helpful. The best thing was finding a townhouse that was part of a museum, and they let you tour it yourself. I was so excited. I had the whole place to myself for a while, and I’m like taking tons of pictures and imaging scenes in the book. Plus, I had beignets and pralines, which Elise (the heroine) loves to eat! LOL!

Was the book easy to write or did you want to scream?

I can’t say it was easy to write. I did a lot of revisions as the story developed and I developed as a writer. One of my main goals was to write Elise’s story true to her character and the other characters as well. I tried to let them tell their own story through me. I had done that previously with a couple of short stories and for a writer who had always been writing to guidelines and formulas, it is like being released from prison!

I think one of the most exciting things that can happen when you’re writing is when the story itself takes over. Toward the end of the book, there is a scene with Elise and Simone. Okay so I’m writing it and all the sudden a rider appears. I’m like WTF!!! Anyway, the rider became pivotal to setting up the next book, which was supposed to be Bonnard’s story but I knew the minute I’d finished the scene, the next book had to be Rafe and Simone’s story.

What would you like readers to know about this book?

I’d like them to know what it is not. It is set in 1814 but it is not a Regency. No Regency tone, dialect, ton, or dukes. It’s not “two polite people in a drawing room.”

It is a romantic novel of love, courage, loyalty, and honor during dark times. It does have violent moments, and sometimes a little humor. It has occasional strong language and love scenes that are warm/spicy. Depending on how you define that. 😉

You can pre-order TO SAVE A LADY on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B00OJF5MFK

Here’s the blurb

A DARING MASQUERADE

A move from Paris to New Orleans brings disaster to Elise Plaisance’s predictable life as a lady’s maid. The son of her grief-stricken mistress disappears, and Elise is drawn into a dangerous web of espionage and deceit as the threat of war divides the city.

A CAPTAIN BEWITCHED

Captain Jesse Cross doesn’t fancy himself as a lovelorn soldier desperate for a woman until a mysterious French spy captivates his imagination. Their romance is a frail illusion, born in the darkness of a moonlit courtyard and never meant to last forever.

A FUTURE IMPERILED

The enemy strikes. Both on the battlefield and in the Quarter. Torn between loyalty and love, Elise must risk everything to rescue her mistress’s son before all is lost. Jesse knows he has to stop her even if it means sacrificing his honor and losing his life to save a lady.

Here is short excerpt which features the hero, Captain Jesse Cross, and his cousin, Lt. Bonnard Reid. Their scenes together were always so much fun to write. In this snippet, Bonnard is in Jesse’s office at General Jackson’s headquarters, playing with a bandalore, which would be called a yo-yo today.

EXCERPT:

Bonnard tried walking the bandalore on the floor. His wrist motion faltered, and the red disk hung lifelessly from the string.

“I think you need more practice,” said Jesse.

Bonnard rewound the string around the center of the disk. “Since you’re off duty this evening, I have a suggestion.”

Jesse gave his cousin a dry glance. “I can’t wait to hear it.”

“Come with me to the American Sector.” Bonnard referred to the part of the city where the Americans, who had moved to New Orleans after the Louisiana Purchase, had formed a small settlement. West of the French Quarter and the city canal, it was aptly referred to as the American Sector. “Miss Joy Fletcher and her girls are from Charleston. They’re American whores, and they adore officers.”

Jesse eyed his cousin. “Have you shown them your toy?”

“Of course.” Bonnard grinned, revealing a dimple in his jaw. “The girls at Miss Joy’s are very entertained by my toy. They love playing with it.”

“Well, Lieutenant, you need to put your toy away,” Jesse said as he returned to his desk. “I want you to send some scouts north to look for the Kentucky militia. They should be here by now.”

“What about tonight? A couple of Miss Joy’s girls have no teeth and bottomless throats.”

Jesse shook his head. “I have plans.”

“And those plans, no doubt, involve a masked woman.” Bonnard reached for the doorknob. “Your desperation amazes me, Captain.”

Hours later, when Jesse braved the wet, winter evening, he knew Bonnard was right. Only a desperate man would be out tonight, rushing to meet with a woman whose face he’d never seen.

What’s next?

I’m working on TO LOSE A LADY, which is Rafe and Simone’s story. I also have a contemporary series coming up and people are always asking me about more short stories. Not enough hours in the day!!

Thanks for stopping by and I hope everyone has a great week!

Patricia also wants me to let you know that she is having a drawing on December 10th for a fleur-de-lis necklace. She will include anyone who leaves a comment on this post in the drawing!

Jenna’s 411

Welcome to this week’s installment of Jenna’s 411.

120px-Paperback-stackBook Chat

This week, rather than my own books,  I’m talking about the book I just finished reading:  The Fiery Cross by Diana Gabaldon, Book 5 in the Outlander series.  The further exploits of Jamie and Claire in the New World. I’m very invested in this story by now, so I’ll  continue reading (they really are page turners–I’ve been up until 3am some mornings because I just can’t put my Kindle down). But the books have turned into more of a family saga than the straight romance of Outlander. A Warning:  Ms. Gabaldon pulls no punches (much like her quintessential villain Jack Randall). She believes her heroes and heroines should suffer, and suffer they do. And so does the reader on their behalf.   But that maybe part of the allure of this series because you  come to care so much for the main characters.  I can’t wait to start the next book in the series!

Laura_U_Interior_Design_5_2007-Residential-NYC_(10)On the Home Front:  My Day Off

My production ended Saturday night, so I got to take all of Sunday off.

HEAVEN!

I did something I’ve not been able to do for quite a while:  spend the whole day in bed. My daughters brought me breakfast in bed, and lunch. Delicious! Especially since I didn’t have to cook.  I read (this was when I finished The Fiery Cross), slept, and watched a  marathon of the 70s  sitcom Soap,  still funny after all these years. I highly recommend it. 🙂    Then my family took me to my favorite Indian Restaurant to celebrate.  More delicious food I didn’t have to cook. And then back home  and back to bed. It was truly a perfect day!

images0WVABJ0YJenna Fun Fact of the Week

I was a candidate for Homecoming Queen my Senior Year in High School.  Yep, surprised the hell out of me too. LOL  I belonged to the newly formed Fencing Club my senior year and I was the only female in the club. So the guys nominated me as a lark, but I ended up with my picture all over the yearbook section on Homecoming because I ended up standing next to the girl who won.  A fun if unexpected experience.

That’s it for this week!  See you for the 411 next time!

Spotlight on Christi Caldwell and For Love of the Duke

Duke

For Love of the Duke—Blurb

After the tragic death of his wife, Jasper, the 8th Duke of Bainbridge buried himself away in the dark cold walls of his home, Castle Blackwood. When he’s coaxed out of his self-imposed exile to attend the amusements of the Frost Fair, his life is irrevocably changed by a fateful meeting with Lady Katherine Adamson.

With her tight brown ringlets and silly white-ruffled gowns, Lady Katherine Adamson has found her dance card empty for two Seasons. After her father’s passing, Katherine learned the unreliability of men, and is determined to depend on no one, except herself. Until she meets Jasper…

In a desperate bid to avoid a match arranged by her family, Katherine makes the Duke of Bainbridge a shocking proposition—one that he accepts.

Only, as Katherine begins to love Jasper, she finds the arrangement agreed upon is not enough. And Jasper is left to decide if protecting his heart is more important than fighting for Katherine’s love.

Christi is giving away an e-copy of For Love of the Duke to one commenter who leaves a pithy comment for her.

EXCERPT:

He settled his large, hand over hers.

Katherine jumped.

“I suggest unless you merely want to trade death by drowning for death by the wheels of a carriage, that you release the handle, madam.”

His flat, emotionless tone conveyed boredom. Why, he might as well have been commenting on the weather or offering her tea.

Katherine snatched her hand back, feeling burned by his touch. “You are a m-monster,” she repeated.

He tugged free his wet gloves and beat them against one another. Drops of water sprayed the carriage walls. “Your charge grows unoriginal and tedious, madam.”

And in that moment it occurred to Katherine just how ungrateful she must seem. The towering stranger might be a foul-tempered fiend, but he’d saved her. Her lips twisted. Whether he’d wanted to or not.

“Forgive me, I’ve not yet thanked you.” She took a breath. “So thank you. For saving me. From drowning,” she finished lamely.

His shoulder lifted in a slight shrug. “I’d hardly ruin the amusements of the day by watching you drown beneath the surface of the Thames.”

She expected she should feel outraged, shocked, appalled by those callously delivered words…and yet, something in his tone gave her pause. It was as though he sought to elicit an outraged response from her. Instead of outrage, Katherine was filled with her first stirrings of intrigue, wondering what had happened to turn his black heart so vile.

Katherine did not rise to his clear attempt at bating her. “My name is Lady Katherine Adamson.” Pause. “I imagine I should know the name of my rescuer.”

He said nothing for a while, and Katherine suspected he had no intention of answering her. She sighed and reached for the curtained window.

“Jasper Waincourt, 8th Duke of Bainbridge.”

Her eyes widened. “You are a duke,” she blurted.

He arched a single, frosty black brow at her. “You’d be wise not to make designs upon my title, madam. I’d not wed you if you were the last creature in the kingdom.”

She blinked. Oh, the dastard. Katherine jabbed a finger at him. “And you, well I wouldn’t wed you if you were the last creature in the world, and the King decreed it to spare my life.”

His lips twitched. But then the firm line was back in place, so that she suspected she’d imagined the slight expression of mirth. “It is good we are of like opinions, then, madam. We are here,” he said.

She angled her head. And then the carriage rocked to a halt.

The sudden, unexpectedness of the stop, propelled Katherine forward, and she landed in an ignominious heap atop the duke’s chest.

It was as though she’d slammed into a stone wall. All the breath left her. She looked up at him through her lids…

Medieval Monday: Spotlight on Ashley York

MedMon

Welcome back to Medieval Monday, the hop for readers who love medieval romance.  This week I have the incomparable Ashley York with me.  Next week I’m featuring a contemporary comic writer, but the week after will be followed, on October 27, with great friend and fellow medieval author Andrea R. Cooper.

The Saxon Bride by Ashley York

Historical Romance writer Ashley York loves history and intrigue. Her latest book, The Saxon Bride, is the first in her Norman Conquest Series. Here is a little about the book:

In war torn England the battle lines between Saxon and Norman are clearly drawn. The Saxons must fight for everything they have in the hopes of winning their country back from the Normans who are determined to break their resistance.

Rowena Godwinson, the sole remaining member of the defeated royal family, stands proudly against the Normans that would trample them underfoot but her nobility and grace make her an ideal pawn in the Norman King William’s play for power with the Saxon people. When he decrees she marry a powerful Norman knight, her subjugation appears to be complete. The handsome soldier with the kind brown eyes and gentle touch is a threat to her determination to defy the interlopers. Can she hold firm to her Saxon heritage and refuse to give in to his advances?

John of Normandy wants only to prove himself worthy of the king’s trust. He is rewarded for his service and loyalty with land, titles and a Saxon beauty for a bride. John balks at the marriage, driven by the secret guilt of knowing Rowena’s father died at his sword. However, John’s reluctance is soon replaced by a burning desire to please this woman and win her over as well as her people.

As their people look to them for guidance and peace, can John and Rowena find a love that unites all of England?

TheSaxonBride2_300-1.jpg

Excerpt from The Saxon Bride:

Pacing the small area like a confined animal, she finally paused to look out the window. The dreary day reflected her feelings, rain threatening at any moment. “Do you know when my husband will be returning?”

“I am back now.”

John stood in the doorway handsomely dressed as befit the new Lord of Essex. Rowena’s breath caught in her throat. She looked away before the immense pleasure she felt at his return showed on her face.

Joan quickly gathered her sewing and removed herself from the room, closing the door behind her.

“Will you attend me, my lady?”

Rowena went to him and helped him remove his surcoat before seeing to the heavier chainmail. He smelled of horses and leather. Manly. Rowena tried not to close her eyes as she drank in the intoxicating smell of him. Why would a dirty, sweaty man make her feel so light headed? She stepped away when she realized why, the chainmail slipping forward off his arms. His hooded eyes told her that he knew what she was feeling.

“Is there a problem?” His deep voice seemed to reverberate through her body.

Quickly putting the heavy material down, she headed to the door. “I will order a bath for you.”

“Wait.”

Rowena froze with her hand on the latch and heard him coming toward her. He stood close behind, his breath soft against her cheek.

“Yes?” Be done with this. Her body yearned for his arms to pull her against him, to feel his kiss again. She licked her lips.

“Why are you leaving in such a hurry?” His hand lightly touched the side of her head as he spoke, pushing her hair away from her face. He leaned in closer to her exposed ear. A responding shiver ran down her body. “Are you afraid of me?”

She backed up to the door with a thud and faced him. Her pulse was racing as she lied. “No, my lord. Methinks you have a rather strong odor about you and I would have you take a bath before the evening meal.”

John backed away quickly, his eyes flying open. “I am sorry if I offend you. Please see to the bath.”

Rowena felt only slightly guilty when he turned away from her, standing like a lost little boy in the middle of the room.

Jenna’s 411

Welcome to this week’s installment of Jenna’s 411.

Sorry I’m a day late, but I’m in production and having late, late rehearsals! So on with a brief 411.

120px-Paperback-stackBook Chat

I’m currently making plans to re-release one of my erotic contemporaries that I’ll be getting the rights back to in December.  I’ll add a little to it–I always wanted to write more, but the specifications from the publisher were strict. I’m also including two new short stories with the hero and heroine, so even if you already have the old version, you’ll want to get the new one as well.

untitledOn the Home Front:  AWOL

I’ve actually not been home very much this week.  rehearsals for the show have kept me at work late in the night/early into the morning.  I haven’t seen one of my daughters for two days! So not much that I know about on the home front this week.

Jenna Fun Fact of the Week

I HATE water chestnuts!  You know, those little round, crunchy things you get in Chinese 800px-HK_food_馬蹄_Water_chestnuts_June-2012food?  Can’t stand them!  It’s not the taste-they don’t taste like anything. But the crunch…I feel like I’m chewing Styrofoam! *shivers*  I take them out and give them to Daughter #1 who LOVES them.  Go figure.

That’s all  for this week.  Short and sweet.  Come back next Wednesday for more (hopefully lots more) news from Jenna. 🙂

Spotlight on Rescued by the Spy by Patricia Green

Welcome to my Tuesday Spotlight.  I found out that Patricia Green’s Sci-Fi Erotic Romance Rescued by the Spy has just gone on pre-order at Amazon, so I had to have her here on my blog.  I read this book before its brand new make-over and it was hot then.  Can’t wait to see the new version!  If it’s got Patricia Green’s name on the cover, it’s going to be a great read!

Can an undercover spy save the women he loves without blowing his cover?

SPY

Blurb:

A spy working for the Solarian Federation

Michael O’Malley is undercover in a sting operation against Jerold Laricon, a man with Machiavellian social restructuring schemes and a desire for world domination.

Kidnapped and kept as a sex slave

Could there be a worse time for Nina Stanley, O’Malley’s old flame, to show up in Ligeia as a kidnap victim? Sure, he wants to save her, but his job is to crush Laricon’s slave trade and vicious rise to power.

The young and beautiful “spare”

Muddying the waters is Michael’s need to fit in and partake of the succulent fruits on Laricon’s human slave tree–including Alyssa, a willing sex slave he’s forced to take as his own. Now he has two women counting on him, and the fate of a world.

Nina’s goal is to get out

No matter what it takes. Nina is appalled by what she experiences in Ligeia at the hands of the evil Laricon, but what if the price of her freedom is Michael’s life? Can she live with herself if that happens?

Excerpt:

Michael was thinking as fast as he could. He remembered the night he’d shared with Nina in explicit detail. So much explicit detail, in fact, that he felt himself growing hard. The night had been during the Martian Conflict, a quick and dirty meeting just before he’d been called away on a new assignment. They’d both known it would likely end after their brief encounter, but a feverish need to couple had been all that was important at the time.

“She’s okay, sir,” he said noncommittally.

Walker snorted. “What does O’Malley know, sir? He’s too busy with administrative stuff to even notice the women.”

Laricon looked at Michael oddly. “Nonsense. Come on, boy, and get a good close look. I’m asking your opinion.”

Michael stood, closing his jacket over the lump in his pants. “Of course, sir.” It was a near disaster.

“O’Malley?” the girl said. “Michael O’Malley?”

Laricon shot quizzical glances between Michael and Nina.

“Michael, get me out of here! Help me, please!” Nina implored, taking a step toward him.

Knowing Laricon was watching, Michael had no choice. “Yeah, I remember you, Nina.” He cupped her chin and tried to tell her with his eyes that he was sorry, sorry for what he was about to do. “A nice lay, as I recall. Very good with her mouth, sir.”

Nina gasped and slapped his face. Immediately, a guard manhandled her back. “You pig! You goddamned fucker! I don’t know what this is about, but you’re not the man I remember.”

“No, bitch,” Michael ground out, rubbing his cheek. “I’m not. I got smart, wised up. If you’re smart, you’ll learn that things here are different. And women obey, they don’t order.”

Roberto was watching with more interest than he’d shown all evening. Michael squirmed under his avid demeanor.

Laricon was smiling, his yellow, crooked teeth making the expression malevolent. “Well said, Michael, my boy. You know this young lady from where?”

“Back when I was in Command Security, sir. During the Martian Conflict. She was a reservist. Had the hots for me, and so I fucked her one night. Left the next morning. That was it.”

“I see.” Laricon nodded. He turned to Nina. “Are you still in Command Security, girl? Don’t lie because I will find out, and the consequences will be…well, draconian.”

“No,” she answered succinctly. And when Laricon raised an eyebrow, she glared, but said, “No, sir.”

“Very well. Turn around.”

“Suck rocks…sir,” she replied.

Medieval Monday: Spotlight on Mary Morgan and Dragon Knight’s Sword

MedMon

It’s Medieval Monday again and I’m spotlighting fellow medieval romance author, Mary Morgan!

Next week, October 13, I’m spotlighting Ashley York’s fabulous books.

Now, please welcome Mary Morgan!!

DragonKnightsSword_w7485_300-2Duncan Mackay will do anything to lift the curse from his family – even forfeit his own life. But his plans change when he encounters the woman from his dreams, literally. She is from the future, somehow has his lost sword, and can talk to the Dragon that is able to lift his family’s curse.

Brigid O’Neill has spent her life listening to the mythological legends from Ireland and Scotland. So, when an ancient sword lands at her doorstep and she starts dreaming of a rugged Highlander, she drops everything and takes on a quest that will alter everything she believes.

Before their journey ends, not only will Duncan and Brigid battle an ancient curse, they must also find the courage to believe in the destiny that brought them together.

Excerpt:

He stood next to the waterfall. Beads of water glistened from his dark locks.

Brigid watched as they trailed down his chiseled torso, traveling down to where his tartan was wrapped low on his waist. The wind whipped at the folds of his plaid, the power coiling within and around him, as mystical as the land he stood on.

“Ancient warrior,” she uttered softly.

When she looked up into his eyes, they smoldered with desire, and it startled her. A sensual shiver ran through her, wanting to be crushed within his embrace. The raw desire to be in this man’s arms, touching and tasting him, was so potent, she could feel her heart hammering inside her chest.

He tilted his head to the side, as if studying his prey.

Brigid didn’t know if she should run or step into his massive arms.

He took a step toward her, and her pulse quickened. The very air around her seemed electrified. He then took another…and another, until he stood
merely inches in front of her.

Her breathing became labored, as he bent his head leaning close to her ear. She was engulfed in a sensual haze wanting his lips to touch her anywhere and put an end to her torture. His mouth was so close, she could feel a dark lock of his hair against her cheek, and she shuddered.

“Bring me back my sword,” he growled into her ear.

Brigid’s eyes flew open, clutching the sheets as the last fragments of her dream faded.

T is for Titles

Back when we visited the letter “O,” we talked about the order of precedence and which title was higher or more important than another. Today I’m taking a closer look at the titles themselves.

The major titles in England in order of precedence are:

Coronet of a British Duke

Coronet of a British Duke

Duke: the highest rank and title in the peerage after royalty. The wife of a duke is a duchess. A Duke is styled as “My Lord Duke,” and “Your Grace.” His eldest son takes his “second title” and is styled “Lord SecondTitle.” Any younger sons are given the courtesy title “Lord” and addressed as “Lord FirstName FamilyName.” Any daughters are given the courtesy title “Lady” and addressed as “Lady FirstName FamilyName.” There are currently 32 Dukes extant.

Coronet of a British Marquess

Coronet of a British Marquess

Marquess/Marquis: the second highest rank and title. The wife of a marquess is a marchioness. A Marquess is styled “My Lord Marquess” or “Lord Title.” All his younger sons are given the courtesy title “Lord” and his daughters “Lady” and are addressed as “Lord FirstName FamilyName” or “Lady FirstName FamilyName.” His eldest son takes his “second title.” For example, if the Marquess of Dowdy also holds the titles Earl of Hebron and Viscount Tilton, the eldest son will assume the title Earl of Hebron by courtesy and be addressed as “Lord Hebron.” There are currently 34 marquesses. The spelling “Marquis” is used in several older Scottish titles where that spelling was used in the creation of the title.

Coronet of a British Earl

Coronet of a British Earl

Earl: the third highest rank and title. An earl is equivalent to a “count” in France, and the wife of an earl is called Countess. An earl is styled “My Lord,” his eldest son takes his “second title,” and is addressed as “Lord SecondTitle.” An Earl’s younger sons do not receive the courtesy title “Lord” and are addressed as Mr. FirstName FamilyName. All of his daughters, however, are afforded the courtesy title “Lady FirstName FamilyName.” There are currently 191 earls.

Coronet of a British Viscount

Coronet of a British Viscount

Viscount: the fourth highest rank and title. The wife of a viscount is a viscountess. The viscount is styled “My Lord,” however his children do not receive the courtesy titles of “Lord” and “Lady.” Sons are simply known as Mr. FirstName FamilyName and the daughters are called Miss FirstName FamilyName. There are 270 viscountcies, however, most are secondary titles.

Coronet of a British Baron

Coronet of a British Baron

Baron: the lowest rank in the peerage. The wife of a baron is a baroness. A baron is styled “My Lord” and his wife as “My Lady.” His children do not hold courtesy titles and are styled Mr. FirstName FamilyName and Miss FirstName FamilyName. There are currently 1166 barons in the peerage (including Life Peers).

Baronet: a hereditary rank, lower than the peerage, instituted in 1612 by James I, who fixed the precedence of baronets before all Knights, those of the Order of the Garter alone excepted. A baronet is addressed as “Sir” and his wife as “Lady.” Their children hold no courtesy titles and are addressed simply as Mr. or Miss FirstName FamilyName.

I always think this system is rather confusing, since I did not grow up learning these titles by osmosis as English children di.  This explanation, however, has made it a bit less daunting for me.  If you’re not well versed in British titles of the peerage, I hope it helps you as well.
