Jenna’s 411 ~ 11/18/14

Welcome! I’m back with this week’s installment of Jenna’s 411.

Book Chat

NOT the cover, but I needed an image :)

NOT the cover, but I needed an image 🙂

Not much news on the book front for me this week.  I did send off final content edits for Only Marriage Will Do and can expect them back in a couple of weeks. My editor seems to think they will be an easy line edit (from her mouth to God’s ears). From what I can tell the release date is still May of 2015, but I know that can change.  And I’ll keep you up to date on when you can expect the cover reveal.  I’ve seen the cover and it is absolutely delicious.  Perfect for this story.  Can’t wait to share it with you!

On the Home Front:  Sick Kitty

While I was working day and night at my production, my newest kitty, Sebastian (who I20140916_234050_resized got from Ella Quinn earlier this year), got sick.  He stopped eating and started drooling, so we took him to the vet and found out he has gingivitis.  A week later he’s still not eating like he once was and I’m very worried about him. I tried baby food but he doesn’t like it.  I’ve been giving him shredded food instead of his usual paté because he will lick the gravy and eat some of the shreds which are soft. I’m not sure what to try next. But he is a good patient–he takes his medicine very well.  I just hope he gets his appetite back soon.

Jenna Fun Fact of the Week

800px-USMC-101210-M-5623T-086I spent most of the Saturday mornings of my childhood  bowling on a youth league.  My best friend and I were on the same team and teamed up in doubles for tournaments.  For my 10th birthday I got a bowling ball, bright blue with my initials engraved on it.  My highest game ever was a 200.  Not bad for a 12 year-old!

That’s all  for this week.  See you next Wednesday with more  news from Jenna!

LovesLegacy_1600

Blurb:

Grenada, British West Indies, 1875

English plantation owner Geoffrey Worth has misgivings about hiring an American widow as a governess. But while Geoffrey longs to forget the past—and the daughter who reminds him of it daily—there is still duty to consider. And Bellefleur, his plantation. This is his life now. Warmth, family, love; these things only bring pain. And scars he’ll carry forever…

Elizabeth Malfonte is certainly not the aged widow he had anticipated. She’s young and beautiful, with a determination that wakes something deep within Geoffrey. Yet Elizabeth hides her own secret―the babe within her womb. And despite Geoffrey’s handsome―yet scarred face―her new employer has a cold and unforgiving nature that unsettles her, even as Elizabeth’s wariness slowly heats to desire.

But the bright beauty of this land is no match for the dark, ominous clouds of the past…

Alphabet Post: U is for Underwear

Women's Panties

Women’s Panties

Here’s a brief history of underwear to start off your week. 🙂

Loincloth

Loincloth

Underwear, garments worn underneath outer garments, has been in existence for thousands of years. The first form was the simple loincloth that covered men’s genitals, in evidence 7,000 years ago. In fact, more than this simple undergarment was deemed unnecessary by most people until the Middle Ages.

By the Medieval period, men’s clothing had changed and men acquired

Braies

Braies

several new undergarments. Braies were a loose-fitting pant-like garment that men stepped into, then tied at the waist and around the calves. Wealthier men wore chausses, worn only on the legs and again tied at the waist. These were eventually replaced by hose that in the Renaissance were

Codpiece

Codpiece

adorned with a codpiece, a pouch covering the genitals that was also meant to accentuate that area.

What we would deem women’s underwear does not come on the scene until the Renaissance. Previously women would have worn a chemise, a shirt-like garment made of linen worn next to the skin that could be laundered easier than the costly silk and velvet outer garments. At this time women also acquired stays, a garment of linen stiffened with buckram, whalebone, reeds or canes that flattened their breasts.

In the 18th and 19th centuries, stays changed to be more lightly boned and were called

18th century corset

18th century corset

corsets. In the Regency period they were more relaxed, less constricting. By the Victorian era, when a wasp waist was the cornerstone of beauty, they became extremely constrictive. Corsets remained the major women’s undergarment until the 20th century when the liberty bodice gave them more freedom.

In the 19th century, women also acquired pantalettes or pantaloons, crotchless underwear designed to hide the legs and provide warmth under the huge bell-shaped gowns of the period.

Brassiere

Brassiere

The modern brassiere was invented in 1913 by Mary Phelps Jacob and caught on during World War I when metal for boning corsets was in short supply.

Men and women’s underwear changed constantly during the 20th century as the garments became increasingly more comfortable due to new fabrics. Modern underwear came about

Briefs

Briefs

largely in the 1930s. Men’s briefs and boxer shorts, women’s girdle and bra all became popular in the 30s. By the 1960s and 70s underwear was touted for its sex appeal rather than its durability.

G-String

G-String

Current popular items include the G-string and thong for women and boxer briefs for men.

So what style do you prefer?

Jenna’s 411

Welcome! I’m back with this week’s installment of Jenna’s 411.

Sorry I’ve been AWOL the past two weeks, working on my production.  But now the play is over and I’m hopefully back on track. So on with a brand new, long delayed 411.

tetl-frontXBook Chat

In the midst of my hectic life, I read a post on one of my loops that the 2015 RITA awards contest was open for entries.  This is  the RWA’s Oscars for published works, except you can self-nominate your own books. So I did!   I nominated Time Enough to Love for the 2015 RITA awards. 🙂 I’ll find out in March if I made it to the finals, and while I’m not holding my breath, it’s really exciting to be part of this contest.  Wish me luck!

Podium1On the Home Front:  Madame President

This past Saturday my local RWA chapter held elections for the chapter Board for 2015.  I’d already served on the Board a couple of years ago for two years as VP of Programs.  But this year, as we are a small chapter and RWA rules about who can run for office are rather strict, I ended up being nominated for and elected President for the next year.  It’s going to be a challenge, given my work schedule and my writing, but the alternative was unacceptable (possible disbanding of the chapter) so I stepped up and will make the chapter one of my priorities in 2015.  Again, wish me luck!  I’m pretty excited about it, especially as I dislike speaking in front of  groups, so it will be an education in public speaking which will probably do me good. I will keep you posted.

Jenna Fun Fact of the Week

I spent my honeymoon under water. That’s right, my husband and I went to Florida forFlickr_-_JennyHuang_-_I_love_deep_blue two weeks to scuba dive on our honeymoon.  It was absolutely fantastic–we did 14 dives in 14 days, usually 2 dives per day.  We dove on things as diverse as reefs, a Rolls Royce, a sunken ship.  And our last dive was a “shark dive” where we were supposed to go down 140 feet to swim with sharks.  An equipment malfunction caused us to miss that dive, but it was exciting nonetheless.  That was my last dive, and it’s still a fantastic memory.

That’s all  for this week.  Let’s hope this next week is as productive!  Come back next Wednesday for more  news from Jenna!

Interview with Gina Danna ~ Great and Unfortunate Desires

Gina_036Today I’m so excited to have my good friend Gina Danna under the gun in a quickie interview (so she can get back to writing these sexy historicals!).

1.  What was your inspiration for this story? Its a bit complicated – my agent at the time I started it wanted me to go back & write another novel on lords & ladies. I didn’t want to do a Regency mainly cuz I was intrigued by Sherlock Holmes (RDJ movie version – with Jude Law as Watson) the movie where Sherlock talks about Watson’s walking stick & how it involved his military & Afghanistan. That got me researching and finding out about The Great War, which is Britain and Russia fighting in Afghanistan – it was all over Russia wanting to take the wealth of India from Great Britain.

2.  Who is your favorite romance hero or heroine and what qualities do they possess that makes them memorable? Wow, I have many that I consider my favorite hero. One driving factor is they are complex characters, not just a role.

3.  Who has been the greatest influence in your writing? Probably my significant other. He’s my greatest supporter, can push me even when he doesn’t know it and makes me dig deeper, making my characters greater in depth of complexity, making them more real. He makes me tap into my emotions, forming those feelings into words.

4.  Do you have plans for a sequel to the book? Probably not; will probably write about this period, the late 19th century but probably not Tristan & Evelyn.

5.  What is the most exciting/daredevil thing you’ve ever done? Probably working all summer as a living historian, firing cannons and entertaining guests at Vicksburg National Military Park – moving there, playing with explosives, etc.

6.  What is your favorite amusement park ride? Rollercoaster. I was terrified of them when I was young but now they’re my favorite!

7.  Tea or Coffee? Coffee

8.  Boxers or briefs? (or Commando?) Boxers – they’re sexier than hell!

And now here the blurb and  the gorgeous cover for Great and Unfortunate Desires:

GinaDanna_Great&UnfortunateDesires_800pxA

Victorian England c. 1870

Operating as a British spy, Tristan St.James, the new Marquis of Wrenworth, barely escapes Afghanistan with his life in the spring of 1869. He plans to seek vengeance against the traitor who exposed him and for the agent he’s forced to kill. Returning to England, as a lord, he must marry. Haunted by guilt from the horrors of war, he avoids love at all costs, but finds himself drawn to the only woman who is disinterested in him.

Lady Evelyn Hurstine has waited over two years for the return of her love, a man who left for war in the East. But during that time, she suffered a brutal assault, resulting in a child and fear of any man touching her except for the man she once knew. The pursuit by the marquis scares her but her excuses against his proposal dwindle.

Their marriage strengthens into love until she discovers her husband isn’t the safety she believed but the one who killed the man she once loved. Caught in a world of intrigue and mayhem, Tristan must prove his love to her before the traitor destroys them both.

Medieval Monday: Spotlight on Cathy MacRae

MedMon

Welcome back to  Medieval Monday, the hop for readers who love medieval romance.  This is the final week of Medieval Monday until 2015; next week my Alphabet Posts will fill in here and I’ll have a brand new feature on Fridays. Medieval Mondays will resume in January, I believe, and, fingers crossed, I’ll have a new medieval work to share with you then!

Today, I’m spotlighting fellow medieval author Cathy MacRae with her fantastic new medieval tale, The Highlander’s Tempestuous Bride.

THTB

The Highlander’s Tempestuous Bride

What happens when the sixteen-year-old daughter of the laird, destined to dutifully marry to benefit the clan, falls in love with the wrong lad? In Medieval times, punishments ranged from forced marriage to the man chosen by the laird, to imprisonment, life in a nunnery, or even death.

Gilda does not set out to defy her parents, but when she falls in love with the son of the laird of a neighboring clan that has been at war with hers for years, things are bound to go wrong.

Book cover blurb:

Returning home after a ten-year absence, Ryan Macraig falls for a fiery, red-haired lass from the wrong side of the firth. He can’t ignore his need to see her again, even knowing she must be a hated Macrory.

Gilda Macrory trespasses Macraig land, but haunting memories of the young man she once met there draw her to the forbidden place. Learning he is Laird Macraig’s son threatens her dreams, for her father would never agree to a marriage between his daughter and their enemy’s son.

With pirates raiding the coast, bad blood between the Macraig and Macrory clans could cost Ryan and Gilda their love—and their lives.

* * *

Excerpt:

“Are ye sure . . .” A quick stride took him back to her side.

Gilda jerked the knot at her waist and the skirt fell free, but not before Ryan got a glimpse of slender ankles. She settled an arch look on him and it was all he could do to keep from laughing at the regal air she portrayed.

“I am fine. I am also certain I will not meet ye here again?” Though couched as a question, her tone indicated she’d rather see anyone other than him the next time she ventured out to pick berries.

Ryan shrugged. “I think the berries are about finished for the year. Mayhap the Macraig cook will send a lad out to pick the rest. We like sweets like jams and pastries at Ard Castle, too, ye know.”

“Goodness knows the men at Ard Castle need sweetening,” Gilda shot back, her cheeks pinking as she clearly regretted her quick retort.

“A kiss from a pretty lass would help sweeten this Macraig’s disposition.” Ryan marveled at the swirling colors changing Gilda’s eyes from silver to stormy gray.

Though a well-trained young warrior, Ryan was not quick enough to dodge the palm of Gilda’s hand as it made stinging contact with his cheek. He rubbed his jaw ruefully. He should have remembered though the lass had fascinating gray eyes, she also possessed fiery red hair and a temper to match.

He opened his mouth to apologize, but Gilda had already spun , her back ramrod straight as she marched away, the handle of her basket gripped tight in one hand. The other hand clenched and opened, possibly to relieve the answering sting he felt on his cheek, perhaps echoing a desire to encircle his neck.

Ryan grinned. He would have regretted the apology, anyway.

Cooper’s Redemption by D’Ann Lindun

Blurb:

Elizabeth Adams has often dreamed of being a heroine in a western film, but her job as a florist in Los Angles is a far cry from cowgirl. Her mother travels to Colorado to sell her inherited ranch…and vanishes. When local law enforcement refuses to search, Elizabeth travels to Salt Lick to find her mother.

There is no proof JB Cooper murdered his neighbor, but the people of Salt Lick, Colorado, believe he killed the old man in a heated exchange over water rights. Lack of proof is the only thing keeping Cooper out of jail. When a woman goes missing and a homeless man is killed, he’s the first suspect.

Although everyone, including the local sheriff, advises Elizabeth not to trust Cooper, she instinctively knows he’s no killer. The cowboy reluctantly lets the city girl inside his tough outer layer. Can they find Elizabeth’s mother in time? Or will the dark eye of suspicion on Cooper tear them apart?

Excerpt:

The afternoon flew by into evening as Elizabeth busied herself studying maps of the area. Her afternoon with Cooper had shown her how big of an area in which she had to search, and despair filled her heart. The job was too big. Elizabeth shivered. The fire had died down, and she got up to go add a log to it.

Maybe a window or door was open. She knew the front door had been locked when she came in. Maybe the back door was cracked.

It, too, was firmly shut. Puzzled, she checked each downstairs window. All were snugly closed. As she went upstairs, toward the room she slept in, the air grew colder. Slowly, she entered the bedroom. Every window pane had been fully raised. Cold air blew and flakes of snow covered the bed, the floor. Her own, peach-colored spread was covered by a solid inch of ice. A chill skittered down her spine, every pore seemed to constrict. Her feet felt leaden, then liquid. Her vision blurred.

Was there a stranger, a killer here? Hiding in a closet? Lurking? Waiting to do the same to her as he’d done to Lyle Pritchett?

With a muffled curse, Elizabeth slammed the windows shut and ran to the phone. With shaking fingers she dialed the sheriff’s office. “This is Elizabeth Adams . . . there’s been an intruder in my house. Someone’s been here.” She could scarcely get the words out, her tongue felt too big for her mouth. Stifling a sob, she managed, “Hurry. Please. Oh, please.”

“Is someone still there?” the deputy asked as calmly as if he were making a grocery list.

“I don’t know. I don’t think so.”

“Try to stay calm, Ma’am. Someone will be right there.”

“Okay,” Elizabeth said on a shaky breath. It took her two tries to get the phone back on the receiver. Then, without thinking, she fled to the only person she could think of who would help.

D’Ann’s Bio:

Falling in love with romance novels the summer before sixth grade, D’Ann Lindun never thought about writing one until many years later when she took a how-to class at her local college. She was hooked! She began writing and never looked back. Romance appeals to her because there’s just something so satisfying about writing a book guaranteed to have a happy ending. D’Ann’s particular favorites usually feature cowboys and the women who love them. This is probably because she draws inspiration from the area where she lives, Western Colorado, her husband of twenty-nine years and their daughter. Composites of their small farm, herd of horses, five Australian shepherds, a Queensland heeler, two ducks and cats of every shape and color often show up in her stories!

Disappear by Mary Martinez

Blurb

After two years undercover as an FBI agent to infiltrate a crime organization and discover the identity of a hit man, Tyler Beckett’s cover is blown. Tyler’s new assignment is to protect the only witness who can identify the mysterious killer. If only he didn’t find her so attractive. Each day it becomes harder to keep his objective, especially since he knows the interest is mutual.

Keira Cavanaugh is the only witness to a hit ordered by a crime boss. The safe house is compromised and the same hit man shoots Tyler. Fearing Tyler is dead, Keira plans revenge on the crime organization. She must fake her own suicide in order to survive.

When Tyler discovers what Keira plans, he realizes he must stop her before he loses her for good.

Excerpt

Keira turned in her seat to look at Tyler. His jaw tight, eyes trained on the road. They’d been traveling together long enough she’d stopped seeing the similarities between his looks and the killer’s. Now all she noticed were the dissimilarities and ever since that turning point, she’d been fighting a battle of attraction herself. For him to just climb out of the car, then the next minute declare nothing had happened, really pissed her off.

Was that the only reason she was important to him, to catch Battista? Great he was the typical male, just trying to get in her panties. Now that he’d decided she was too important for that, he’d probably drop her at the safe house and go find a woman. That brought on a wave of jealousy so intense it shocked her. She’d never been a jealous person.

“Where are we going?” She realized she had no idea where the safe house was.

At least this was a much safer topic for her thoughts. Not watching him in her mind with some other woman locked in an embrace where she wanted to be. Jeez, she had it bad. Well she’d have to borrow a page from his book and pretend he didn’t matter. Should be easy, after all she’d just met him.

“The Catskills.”

She jumped and brought her attention back, she’d forgotten about the question. “Are we staying in a hotel there?”

“No. A friend of mine has a place. It’s remote, in the Catskill mountains, where we won’t be bothered.”

Those words gave her pause. Not because of her attraction to him, but because they wouldn’t be close to help if needed.

“Anyone else know where this cabin is?”

“Only the owner and she won’t tell.”

She? That green monster rippled through her body again and she couldn’t hold back. “And she won’t mind you’re taking another woman there?”

She turned her attention to the road, and ridiculously blinking back tears. Out of the corner of her eye, saw him briefly turn his head and glare at her.

“She wants justice probably more than anyone.” He paused as if in thought.

She waited for him to continue, when he didn’t she couldn’t contain her curiosity. “Why?”

“She’s my cousin by marriage,” he said, and looked at her a little strange. “And the victim’s wife.”

Logan’s Redemption from Cara Marsi

Blurb:

He broke her heart once. Can he save her life now?

Doriana Callahan’s life is unraveling. Someone is stalking her and sabotaging her father’s company; her teenage son is rebelling; and Logan Tanner is back in town. For sixteen years she’s kept an explosive secret from Logan, a secret he soon discovers.

Logan never belonged in Doriana’s world, but a long time ago he allowed himself to dream of a future with her, until the awful night he was forced to run. Now he’s back and he needs her forgiveness, but first he must forgive himself.

Despite the fact that Doriana kept the existence of his son from him, Logan vows to protect her. He races against time to stop the culprit threatening Doriana and works to forge a bond with his son. Can the love and passion that still burn between Doriana and Logan overcome old lies and new dangers? The clock is ticking on a second chance at love.

Excerpt:

Logan was at her side in an instant. He grasped her shoulders. She winced at the anger in his eyes. The twinkling lights of the tree reflected on the golden stubble of his beard, mocking the tension that arced between them like an electrical current.

“I’m Josh’s father,” he rasped. “I’m not some stranger, here one day and gone the next.”

“Aren’t you?” She bit down on her lip. Hurt shattered the chiseled planes of Logan’s face. She glimpsed the vulnerable young boy he’d once been, the boy she’d fallen in love with. He released her as if he couldn’t bear to touch her. Her throat thickened with tears.

“So that’s it.” The quiet calmness of his voice damned her more than shouts. “I’ve never been more than a temporary diversion to you.”

“That’s not true,” she whispered. “I loved you. I ….” She stopped herself before she blurted that she loved him now.

“Do you really know what love is?” His gaze raked her. “You have no problem giving your body to me, but I’m not worth bothering with on any other level.”

Fury and pain pierced her like a carpenter’s awl. “How dare you talk to me like that?”

He released a breath. “I’m sorry. I was out of line.” Sadness creased his features. “I just want to be in my son’s life.”

“How do I know you’ll be around for him?”

“Trust me. Damn it, just trust me.”

Could she trust him? Maybe she should ask him to stay. What if he said no? Could she take that chance? Her insides shook. “I can’t.”

“You can’t trust me?” Steel hardened his voice.

She shook her head. “No, that’s not it.”

“Then what is it, Dorie?”

Words dried in her throat. He had to want her enough to never leave again.

Nightmare in the Woods by Sue Fineman

Blurb:

In searching for a friend’s remote cabin in the Oregon woods, Tess Dunlap gets hopelessly lost. She stops at another cabin to ask for directions and steps into a living nightmare. The crazy man who lives there believes God sent Tess to him to be his wife, and he won’t let her leave. He forces her to watch violent movies with him and then emulates what he sees on the screen.

When the battered and bruised woman escapes and finds her way to John Paul Thornton’s cabin, he risks his life to get her to safety. He’s compassionate and funny and quickly becomes a good friend, the one person Tess feels she can rely on. Until she discovers what he does for a living.

John has some serious issues of his own to confront, but there’s a more urgent problem to deal with first. The crazy man hasn’t given up. He’s coming after Tess.

Excerpt:

“Get your ass in here, Tess,” Larry called. “Bring me another beer.”

She took the can into the living room of the dingy cabin and tried to retreat to the kitchen, but Larry grabbed her wrist and pulled her down beside him on the sagging sofa. His fingers dug into her already bruised flesh, but she didn’t dare try to pull away.

“Watch the movie with me.”

“All right.” As if she had a choice.

The movie began and bloody images of a man beating and kicking another man filled the screen. She closed her eyes. Larry’s favorite movie sent cold terror skittering down her spine.

He grabbed her face and squeezed. “Open your eyes, dammit. Watch the movie.”

Her eyes snapped open and her heart pounded with terror. The last time Larry watched this movie, it incited him to beat her like the man on the screen beat his victim. She took a deep breath and tried to suck up her courage. She’d need it tonight.

“Larry, would you like me to make you some popcorn to go with your beer?”

“Okay.”

She stood and he pinched her bottom, twisting his fingers to make it hurt more. As if she didn’t hurt enough already. Her eyes filled with tears from the stinging pain, but she didn’t cry out. If she did, he’d hurt her more.

She had to get out of here. Now. While she could still move. If she didn’t get away from Larry tonight, she’d die in this place.

Tess put the big iron skillet on the stove, turned the burner on high, and added oil and popcorn. As the popcorn sizzled, she poured oil all over the kitchen floor and backed toward the outside door, praying that the oil and flying popcorn would slow him down enough for her to get away.

She opened the door, slipped out, and closed it quietly behind her.

And ran for her life.

Protecting His Wolfe from Melissa Keir

Blurb:

Betsie Wolfe is a small-town girl who leaves her cozy little life for a job in the big city, never expecting to become a witness to a murder or face vicious threats.

Detective Jonah Pigg is attracted to Betsie’s green eyes and small frame when he arrives on the scene of the murder.

When the threats begin, he takes her into his home under the protection of the three Piggs who own the Pigg Detective Agency. It will take all his detective work to keep her safe from the killer.

Passion has a way of igniting when people are under stressful situations, and lust leads Betsie and Jonah into each other’s arms. But is their relationship a matter of desire, or is it something more?

Excerpt:

Late one October evening, after most of the staff had left, Betsie chose to get the last of the filing done before heading out, hoping to earn some bonus points from Miss Hildebrand, the imperious clerical supervisor at Anderson. After all, nobody waited at home for her.

She kicked off her shoes and wiggled her toes, glad to be free of the fashionable toe-pinchers after a long day. Grabbing the stack of papers, she walked over to the tall filing cabinet. She sniffed and sneezed. “Julie must have worn the whole bottle of Chanel this morning.” Her co-worker’s “more is better” perfume policy made their close quarters trying at times. Juggling the folders in one arm, she pushed the window open for fresh air then sat on the floor to sort the files. Perhaps Mrs. Hildebrand, the old dragon who ran the secretarial pool, would appreciate her efficiency and lay off her for once.

Few, if any, other staff members remained so late in the day. Only the soft hum of the fluorescent lights broke the quiet, and she was able to work quickly without all the interruptions of the business day.

As she finished alphabetizing A-L, harsh voices echoed from outside, startling her.

Who could that be? She crept closer to the window, but found it too high to see the people below. Perhaps she shouldn’t have stayed alone at night, no matter how it might benefit her career.

“Do you have the stuff?” The voice sounded familiar. She scrunched her eyes, trying to envision the person behind the sound.

“Yes, I do, but the drugs are hidden until you pay me twice the amount we agreed on.”

She held her breath and crouched behind the file cabinet, afraid to make a sound. Is that Mr. Anderson? Why is my boss talking about drugs?

“That’s not the way to do business. We agreed on a fee. I did the loading and driving. I had all the risk.” The rough voice took on a menacing tone with a rasp that sounded like he—and it was clearly a man— had smoked three packs of cigarettes a day for twenty years.

“But it’s my company and my name on those trucks, which means I’m taking the biggest risk if we get caught moving your drugs. So the amount is double.”

Betsie’s heart raced. She’d never known anyone who’d been involved in dirty business, and now she was working for one. I wish I hadn’t worked late. Her leg hurt from her cramped posture, and she rubbed her calf to try to ease the pain. Closing her eyes, she retraced in her mind the office layout and an escape route. Just in case.

Secret Past from Anna Sugg

Blurb:

Sarah Shapiro searches through the ruins of her grandmother’s deteriorating farmhouse and discovers a metal box and a Tommy gun buried beneath the floorboards.

While trying to unravel the mystery of her grandmother’s secret past with the contents inside the box, Sarah take pleasure in the charming, flirtatious Morgan Mills, who helps her investigate the clues left behind by her grandmother. But it’s Clifford Ketchum the man with an attitude, who boils her blood and contradicts her emotional reactions with his nearness.

Danger closes in on her when the Tommy gun disappears, her soon to be ex-husband is killed, and how could she possibly fall in love with a deceiving contractor, who happens to have a wife.

Excerpt:

Clippard Ketchum’s dark formidable eyes glared toward her. Her shaky fingers uncurled, releasing the tension on Drake’s leash. Instantly, the dog darted toward the man.

The intruder didn’t move.

Drakes lowed his approach. His snarling lips lifted exposing long white fangs. The guarded dog advanced toward the man in slow cautious steps.

“Sarah…”

She heard a plead somewhere in the soft tone of his voice. Returning his stare, her fingers tightened around the flashlight. Breathing in the humid night air, she studied his expression.

“Drake, sit,” Sarah commanded.

The dog obeyed, but never took his black, warning eyes away from his target.

“What are you doing here?” her unsteady voice demanded.

“Noticed car lights…you know it isn’t safe this time of night.” Between tight jaws, his angry tone lowered a bit. Ketchum stared down into the dog’s wary eyes. He didn’t budge nor did the dog.

Still leery, Sarah continued to shine the light in his face. She stepped toward him. “Get out of my way and quit stalking me,” she said bluntly.

When his irreproachable gaze pulled from the dog to her, she stiffened. On the defense, her nerve endings fueled her body. She pressed her lips together and moved forward.

“Come Drake.”

Ketchum didn’t move.

She glared into his black eyes.

“Move,” her flat voice insisted as she pushed him against the door frame.

He raised his hand as if to grab her. She jerked back letting protective instincts take over, pumping adrenaline. Whirling, she threw her leg up and landed a foot in his gut.

Drake charged. Between ferocious growls and barks, he nipped at the enemy’s ankle.

Anna’s Bio:

Anna Sugg/Judy Baker lives in the beautiful western state of Utah. Though she’s a southerner at heart, she loves the surrounding mountains and the desert valleys. She and her husband enjoy their home with a spoiled ninety-pound Airedale. When not writing the stories that fill her head, she enjoys camping with her family, stargazing through one of her many telescopes, digging in her wildflower garden, and golfing, or just swinging on the patio while plotting her next story.

Medieval Monday: Spotlight on Jill Hughey

MedMon

Welcome back to Medieval Monday, the hop for readers who love medieval romance.  This week I’m featuring fellow medieval author Jill Hughey with her wonderful work set during the time of Charlemagne.  Next week, for the final week of Medieval Monday for this year, on November 10th, I’ll be hosting Cathy McCrae.

Today on Medieval Monday, your treat is an excerpt from Unbidden, Book One in Jill Hughey’s Evolution Series which will take you to the rarely explored medieval world of Charlemagne’s Empire where aristocrats, warriors, merchants and servants find love in the most unexpected places! Come along and discover this world for yourself.

BLURB

Rochelle of Alda, a feisty Frank noblewoman, expects to continue her industrious life Unbidden200x300managing her family’s estate. When her emperor summons her to the palace to meet the skilled soldier she is required to marry, Rochelle engages in a battle for independence from David of Bavaria. As her own deceptions multiply, she suspects another of also plotting against their marriage. To her surprise, and too late, David’s passion and patience begin to win her heart. Can their love survive the tangled web of her schemes and the secret adversary David refuses to see?

In this excerpt of David and Rochelle’s first meeting, David has arrived to take Rochelle to the palace for the betrothal, and is dismayed to learn her mother has told her nothing about it.

EXCERPT

David turned his head as the noise from the door escalated, unsure what he expected to enter his life. Given her mother’s shocking hair, he didn’t hold his hopes too high for the girl’s appearance, no matter what Theo said. The need for deception to even get her to Aix did not indicate a particularly biddable personality. Based on the increasingly violent rattling from the latch, she couldn’t even open doors for herself.

He was about to climb the steps to offer assistance when the door finally wrenched open, releasing a storm of muttering about city workmanship and rotten carpentry carried in a whirlwind of deep blue linen. She all but flung herself onto the narrow staircase. Not exactly light of foot nor entirely graceful, she rushed down the stairs, noticing his presence in time to abruptly stop on the bottom step.

She stared at him.

From across the room he could feel the chill of cold caution. Even so, his concern about her looks evaporated. She stood taller than her mother, clear skinned, with eyes of a soft green. The gold circlet on her head held her veil neatly in place, covering what it was intended to cover. An unexpected desire to see the color of her hair shot through him. He could only approximate it from her eyebrows:  not quite brown, but certainly not red either. And her female attributes remained a mystery to him as well, hidden under layers of varying shades of blue, though a heavy gold girdle studded with aquamarines suggested narrow hips.

“Mother?” she queried.

David reluctantly turned to Marian, who, it appeared, had been watching him stare at her daughter. A small smile quirked her lips. Her tightly clasped hands now lay on her chest as if in prayer. She did not find her voice until David cleared his throat expectantly.

“Rochelle!” she said too loudly. “Theophilus, the gentleman who has helped us so much, sent this burly young man to escort ye to yer audience with the emperor. He is called David. A Bavarian, no less!”

David raised his brow at her rather obtuse explanation of his role in the upcoming event. Marian gave him a slight warning shake of her head. Well, if the woman hadn’t the courage to tell this girl the truth of the matter, he certainly did. He didn’t know much about getting along with women, but he guessed that starting his marriage with deception – and necessarily short-lived deception at that – could not be wise.

As he opened his mouth to explain exactly who he was, Rochelle spoke, “I do not see why I need an escort. I found the palace yesterday.”  She lowered herself off the last step and strode toward him with a confident swing of her arms. “But if Theophilus wants to share his guard, so be it.”

Marian bobbed her head. “It was quite thoughtful of him.”

David held up a hand. “I am not Theo’s guard. And did you just suggest you were wandering about the city yesterday, alone?”

Rochelle studied him assessingly. Yes, assessingly was the only word for it and, God help him, she was lovely up close. Her not brown, not red brows arched over green eyes flecked with hazel. A dusting of freckles decorated a thin nose that flared pertly at the nostrils. Her soft pink lips were slightly parted exposing straight teeth.

“Not alone. Our servant, Gilbert, was with me.”

“Gilbert, the bag of bones who opened the door?” David scoffed. “He could not keep a street rat away much less a pack of thieves. From this day forth, you will not leave here without an able-bodied man at your side.”  She smelled nice.

Rochelle placed her hands on her hips, pleasantly outlining a slim waist beneath her clothing. “What has given you the idea you can make pronouncements such as that to me?  I will go where I wish, when I wish, escorted or not, as I wish!”  Her chest heaved a bit and there were breasts under that tunic, he could tell, and damn it when was the last time he’d lain with a woman?  He mentally bridled himself. First, betrothal. Betrothal was the task set before him today. It was time to attend to that task.

He stepped forward, purposely crowding her and letting his hard gaze bore into her fiery eyes, daring her to challenge him. “I will tell you what gives me the right –“

Marian made a strangled sound before finding her words. “Ye should be going!  It will not do to be late to the palace.”

Rochelle eyed first him, then Marian, before backing away to grasp her mother’s hands. “Mother, I do wish you would reconsider. Certainly the nobles have forgotten your circumstances by now. Father would want you to have the honor of meeting Charlemagne’s son.”

Marian laughed a bit shrilly. “No, that is no place for me. Ye shall have the glory today, daughter. Here is your cloak.”  She kept babbling as she closed the gold and aquamarine clasp at the neckline of the pale blue garment. “David will keep you safe. Do as he says, my dear. He is in charge of you today. And possibly tomorrow.”

Rochelle chortled. “Mother, do not be ridiculous. This will be over in an hour or two and then we are going home!  Home, where I also do not require an escort!”  She fixed David with a significant look before she walked to the door, wrenched it open with relative ease, and stepped onto the street without him.

This is the real Jenna under all the computer app zombie special effects!

This is the real Jenna under all the computer app zombie special effects!

Hello! Jenna the Zombie here. Considering my new “state” I thought that in honor of the day, I would give you my picks for some spooktacular Halloween reading today.  Curl up with one of these wickedly good books and you’ll have a frightfully good time this Hallow’s Eve!

First up is a haunting good tale from Sarah Balance called Hawthorne.

Hawthorne 500x750After a terrifying encounter with the unexplained, it takes ten years and the news of her grandmother’s passing for Emma Grace Hawthorne to return to her childhood home. She seeks peace in saying a proper goodbye, but what she finds is an old love, a sordid family history, and a wrong only she can right.

Living in the shadow of Hawthorne Manor, Noah Garrett has never forgotten about Emma Grace. In a house full of secrets, his search for missing documents reveals a truth that can cost him everything. What he finds gave Emma the freedom to walk away from the mansion, her heart free and clear, but at what price to Noah?

What do you do when you find a skeleton at the door? Read E. Ayers’ charming book to find out!

Trick or Treat! Angie Robertson opens her door and finds a six-foot tall skeleton on her doorstep. IsASAHDsm it a trick or a treat?

Angie thought the man at her door was her neighbor. Except he wasn’t. Dressed for a charity event Tom Meyer winds up on the wrong doorstep and this just might be the best thing that ever happened to him.

What if the skeleton was a really nice guy who’d been burned by enough women that he’s lost faith in ever finding someone who could be faithful?

A Skeleton at Her Door is a sensual romance. It’s about trusting, putting the past away, and finding love when it’s least expected. It’s also about blending two households, parenting, three children, and sneaking off for some adult time.

From what I’ve heard, there’s apparently no lover like a Ghost Lover, at least according to Liza O’Connor’s fantastic romance.  Here’s one apparition who will give you a very warm welcome.

ghost loverTwo sexy English brothers. One irresistible ghost. Who would you choose as your lover?

Completely broke and with a criminal record to boot, Senna Smith is one day from eviction from her apartment when Brendon, her promiscuous roommate from London, suggests she go to England, marry him, and manage his fortune. With few other options, she agrees to an open marriage. But she’ll never, ever, have sex with him, knowing if she falls in love with him, he’ll break her heart.

As trustee of Brendon’s family fortune, there is no way Brendon’s older brother, Garrison Durran, is going to let him marry a self-professed American gold-digger. As Senna tries to embrace castle life and English society for Brendon’s sake, Gar discovers Senna is the perfect woman for him–beautiful and intelligent, kind and caring. Now, if she wasn’t already engaged to his brother…

The ancestral ghost of Durran Castle has to intervene if the Durran brothers have any chance of an heir. He can’t leave them to fix matters on their own. They are useless buggers when it comes to love. As counselor to Gar, matchmaker for Brendon, and lover to Senna, a ghost’s work is never done.

The saying goes, “From ghoulies and ghosties and long-legged beasties and things that go bump in the night, good Lord deliver us.”  However, I think you’re going to want to encounter the ghost in Marie Higgins ghostly story, Waiting for You.

When a beautiful woman claiming to be a ghost from 1912 appears in Nick Marshal’s waiting for you2new office and begs for help in solving her murder, he’s intrigued enough to consider her plea. A scandal that rocked Hollywood almost destroyed his law practice, so taking on a client who insists she’s dead seems a good way to refresh his career. The more history he uncovers, the deeper he falls for the ghost. Abigail Carlisle believes Nick is her heart’s true desire, but how can happily ever after happen when she’s already dead?

And now, two books very close to my heart (if I still had one), my zombie pick of the day, Aleah Barley’s Dead Sexy and Dead Set, books 1 & 2 of her Detroit Zombies series.  My kind aren’t depicted as warm and fuzzy–‘cos we’re not–but the romance is to die for!

dead sexyDead Sexy:

Mortuary attendant Gemma Sinclair hunts zombies for a living. It’s messy work, but it pays the bills… right up until she stun guns the wrong dead man in the ass.

Now to keep her family business going, Gemma’s forced into a partnership with federal agent D.S. Thomas Conroy. Zombies are disappearing all over town, and he needs Gemma’s help to figure out why.

With a villain on her trail and a gang of zombies ready to attack, Gemma’s just glad her backup is dead sexy…

Available at Amazon.

dead setDead Set:

Hunting zombies is a tough job and Gemma Sinclair’s been working harder than ever to clear the streets of Detroit, Dead City.

She can deal with the feral Biters, her mother, and even the reappearance of sexy secret agent Thomas Conroy. But an undead serial killer who rips his victims apart will take her to the limit.

Now the entire city’s on edge and if the zombies don’t get her the rioters might.

Available at Amazon.

So there you have it.  My picks for a fright filled night with a good Boo-k.  Have a Happy Halloween and see you next year!

Exposed to Passion: Interview With Gemma Brocato

ETP Cover

Hi, Jenna. Thanks so much for inviting me to visit today. I’m very excited to introduce myself and my new release, Exposed To Passion, to your readers.

So happy to have you on the blog, Gemma, even if you are in the hot seat now. 🙂

1. I am a fanatic about my character names. Are the character names special in any way? Typically my characters aren’t named any special way. It sounds a little crazy to say that as I’m building a character, they’ll whisper a name in my ear, but that’s generally what happens. There are a couple of special characters in Exposed To Passion that I had a specific reason for their name. For example, the villainess, Sherry, is named for a woman who did a friend wrong and a major secondary character was named for a friend’s daughter

2. What was your process for writing this book? Is this different or the same as other books you’ve written? This is the first book I wrote using Michael Hague Story Mastery process. I completed a six stage plot structure, then filled out forms detailing the story arcs for the main characters. I can’t believe how easy it was to complete the book once I was armed with that information. Even writing the synopsis was easy for Exposed.

3.   Do you have plans for a sequel to this book? This series is based on the five sense, and this is book #3. I’m done with book #4 and will be sending it to my editor any day, and I’m working on the Story Mastery process for book #5. Plus, I have a short story based on the characters from boo #2, Hearts In Harmony that will release shortly.

4. Who was the first romance author and book you read? I discovered Georgette Heyer in the high school library and she became like a magnet for me from then on. It was so long ago I can’t remember the title, but each week when I went to the library for quiet study hall I hit that section of the shelves first.

5. Who has been the greatest influence on your writing? My Midwest Romance Writers chapter mates and my critique partners. I have learned so much from these talented women and they have helped me refine and hone my writing style. I’d be lost without them.

6. If you could have one wish granted just for you (not world peace, LOL), what would you wish for? I’d wish that every human being could experience the kind of love my characters have. Everyone deserves a happily ever after.

Now, Lightning Round:

Tea or coffee? Both. Coffee in the morning then I switch to tea in the afternoon.

Boxers, briefs or commando? I like a hybrid of the boxer-brief. All that tight cotton hugging a man’s butt and upper thigh.

Would you rather skydive or scuba dive? Scuba dive. I took a training session in a pool on vacation once and discovered I really loved that floating sensation.

Would you rather vacation in Hawaii, Vegas or London? London (used to live there and miss it horribly)

And at last, Exposed to Passion!

They walked through the shadows individually. Will they emerge into the light together?

Leading a vagabond life as a curator for a traveling photography exhibit translates to a lot of bad days for Rikki Salerno. But her trouble doubles when a careless high school student shoves her into a marsh. Being rescued by teacher Sam Kerrigan should have made things better, but Rikki’s inability to confess her true identity casts a shadow over their budding affair.

When Sam refuses an overly aggressive parent’s marriage proposal, she’s determined to ruin him. Not only does she doctor photos to make it look like Sam’s behaved inappropriately in front of students, she hacks the foundation website to reveal Rikki’s true identity. Faster than the blink of a shutter, Rikki’s focus changes from pursuing her full-color future to the black and white necessity of clearing Sam’s name.

Excerpt:

“Holy cow! Consider me seduced.” She didn’t recognize her own voice. Desire rasped through it, whispery and thick at the same time. Allowing her finger to slip from the steamy confines of his mouth, he pressed a kiss to her palm, then released his hold. She curled her hand into a fist around the kiss he’d left, hoping to hold onto the heat and lingering sensation.

“Oh, Jesus. I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have kissed you like that. It was too fast, wasn’t it? I mean, we only just met…but I thought, I mean, you seemed to want…and you didn’t say no. Christ, I’m so sorry.” Sam’s tone rattled with a misplaced apology. “I have no excuse. I’m a horndog.”

He eased her away from his chest and helped her to sit up, then pushed himself upright and scooted a respectful distance from her.

The apology in his tone and the loss of his body heat hit her like a cold slap. His words stung. He regretted kissing her. The tingly pulses zipping from her fingertip to her heart did nothing to tamp down the hurt. She hadn’t wanted him to stop. Normally the queen of snarky retorts, words failed her now.

_DSC5150_SmallAbout the Author:

Gemma’s favorite desk accessories for many years were a circular wooden token, better known as a ’round tuit,’ and a slip of paper from a fortune cookie proclaiming her a lover of words; some day she’d write a book. All it took was a transfer to the United Kingdom, the lovely English springtime, and a huge dose of homesickness to write her first novel. Once it was completed and sent off with a kiss, even the rejections addressed to ‘Dear Author’ were gratifying.

After returning to America, she spent a number of years as a copywriter, dedicating her skills to making insurance and the agents who sell them sound sexy. Eventually, her full-time job as a writer interfered with her desire to be a writer full-time and she left the world of financial products behind to pursue an avocation as a romance author.
