Weekend Writing Warriors ~ 3/15/15 Beloveds

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors!

I’m back again this week with my current WIP, Beloveds. It has the same characters as my Time Enough to Love trilogy, so if you’ve been wanting more about Alyse, here you go. There has been some rather creative punctuation demonstrated in this snippet this week.

Please forgive the still very rough first draft.  This snippet continues a little after where we left off last time. Thomas and Alyse’s encounter is heating up. ):

He pressed her into the soft mattress and they sank into it, his weight a welcomed burden. He raised his head, his eyes burning with his passion to whisper, “I have missed you sorely, love.” He kissed her eyes, her cheeks, then slid his tongue around the rim of her ear, his breath raspy in her ear.

Goose flesh broke out all over her and she shivered, though from a fever of a different kind. When he sucked on her earlobe she moaned and clutched him to her murmuring, “ I could barely stand the pain when you were gone.”

“Shhh, think not on it, sweet Alyse,” he said, sitting up suddenly and ripping his tunic over his head.

Sight of his sleek chest, muscles rippling with every movement, sent a pang of lust to her core.

“I am here now and I shall make you burn as never before.”

That’s all for this week. Hope you enjoyed it!

If you want to read my medieval  series, Betrothal, Betrayal, and Beleaguered before Beloveds releases (if not, Beloveds will have spoilers)  they are all available on AmazonSmashwords, and ARe .

Update! Pages to Publication Writers Conference ~ March 14, 2015 Additional Editors!

Tomorrow, my local chapter, Chesapeake Romance Writers, will be holding their bi-annual writer’s conference, this year titled Pages to Publication and I have a big update for you.

We will have two additional editors taking pitches!

BethanyBethany Burke    Publisher and CEO of Blushing Books:

Bethany has been writing professionally since the mid 1980s.  In the early 1990s, bothered by the what she perceived as an increasing trend towards “politically correct romance,” Bethany began self-publishing her spicy romances and sending her xeroxed books out through snail mail.   With the dawn of the Internet in the late ’90s, Bethany was freed (at last!) from all those tiresome late night trips to the 24-hour Kinkos and from standing in line at the post office.  She launched her first website on a September day in 1998, went out for dinner, and came home to find that sixteen people had bought one of her books.  She never knew how they found her, but she’s never looked back.

She started what is recognized as the first the first major pay fiction site on the Internet for women in 1999, and began publishing actual E-books in 2001, the first publisher anywhere to do so.  Blushing Books has grown into a company representing more than 200 authors, publishing 25-30 books per month.  We currently dominate lists in Western Erotic Romance and Victorian Erotic Romance on Amazon.

AND

Allison Travis  –  Managing Editor of Lazy Day Publishing:Allison

Allison’s work with Lazy Day started with her love of reading inspirational and Christian romances.   Working first as Bethany Burke’s personal assistant, when Blushing Books’ parent company bought Lazy Day, a publisher of a wide range of fiction and non-fiction, Allison worked with Bethany to recast Lazy Day as a publisher exclusively interested in inspirational and young adult titles.   She lives in Farmville Virginia, with her husband and three children.   Lazy Day is currently actively working with about 50 authors, and publishes 1-2 books a week.

Pages to Publication will be held on March 14, 2015 at the Williamsburg Regional Library in Williamsburg, VA. The conference welcomes everyone with a desire to write or to know more about writing, and not just romance. The workshops are geared toward writers in all genres, not only romance and its subgenres.

behrOur speakers are romance writers Mary Behr, and Meredith Bond. Mary Behr is an award-winning author of paranormal romantic suspense novels set in the Tidewater area. Her workshop is entitled, “Writing Contests: How to get the Most Bang for Your Buck.” Meredith Bond ism-bond an award-winning author of a series of traditionally published Regency romances and self-published historical paranormal romances. Her workshop is titled, “Jumping into Self-Publishing.”

mannWe will also have three fantastic editors taking pitches at the conference: Valerie Mann and Dominique Eastwick of Decadent Publishing,  and Frances Sevilla of The Wild Rose Press. Registrants may sign up for time slots on a first-come basis. All three editors acquire romance novels in all sub-genres and Dominique eastwickEastwick is an acquiring editor in non-romance genres as well.

Other conference events include the presentation of the Rudy awards to Winners of the “Finish the Damn Book,” Contest, a 20-line critique session with the editors, a local author book signing, swag table, and gift basket raffles.

Registration is $40.00 in advance or at the door for this full day of workshops.

For more information and to register, please visit the Chesapeake Romance Writers website here.

If you are in the DC, North Carolina, or Central Virginia area, you should treat yourself to this fun packed, highly informative conference for writers of all genres.

Jenna’s 411 ~ 3/11/2015

26572416_s

Welcome back to another week’s installment of Jenna’s 411!  So sorry for my  absence last week, but I was playing catch-up at work. Still, there’s been much going on.

7992408_mBook Chat I ~ Beloveds is Off to Betas!

I finally finished my revisions to Beloveds, and have sent copies to my three wonderful CPs. One has already returned it with good news on several fronts, so I’m very encouraged. I’ll await the other betas and then off  it goes to my incredible editor, Danielle Fine.  It now looks like a late April release, with a mid-April cover reveal, so stay tuned for definite dates on those fronts.

On the Home Front ~  Memphis!

MemphisThe last weekend in February I took my daughter to Memphis, TN to audition for a theatre program at the University there. It’s my old alma mater, so I was very excited to see the school again and take a tour down memory lane.  The trip itself was fraught with perils as we fled encroaching snow to get to the airport and on the return flight had plane trouble twice (the second time was very scary as a smoky smell filled the cabin). But we made it home safely and my daughter got accepted to her program! Next time I think we’ll drive. 🙂 BTW–Loved the piano keys on the floor of the airport in Memphis!

Most of my life growing up I had long hair. But for some strange reason when I hit 30, I     cut it short and have kept it short ever since. So much easier, although I do miss being able to braid it. I loved a French braid!

So, how’s your week been?

Medieval Monday ~ Lauren Linwood

MedMon

Welcome back to Medieval Monday!

My guest today is Lauren Linwood with her medieval romance A Bit of Heaven on Earth!

a-bit-of-heaven-on-earth-high-res

Blurb:

When Gavin of Ashgrove and his closest friend are captured in a fierce battle during the Hundred Years’ War, their captors demand a hefty ransom from their fathers for their return. Robert is quickly set free, but Gavin’s father refuses to pay for his son’s release, leaving him to rot in a squalid French prison. Aided by a sympathetic priest, he escapes and returns home to England, only to find he has been proclaimed a bastard and disinherited.

With nowhere to turn Gavin journeys to Kentwood, where he fostered as a boy, hoping Lord Aldred will take him on as a knight in his guard. The old warrior is close to death, but he soon realizes Gavin is his son. Aldred plots to have Gavin inherit Kentwood and marry his much younger wife, Elizabeth, a famed and opinionated beauty who remains a virgin after a decade of marriage.

Will the king recognize Lord Aldred’s first request of a marriage between Elizabeth and Robert, uniting Robert’s estate with Kentwood—or will the temperamental Edward reward Aldred’s years of service and honor a dying man’s final request?

***

Excerpt:

Fear struck Elizabeth as Gavin’s lips met hers. A kiss! What was he thinking? She could not kiss him. She didn’t kiss anyone. Aldred’s feeble attempts over the years flittered into her mind. She stiffened in his arms.

Her hesitation did not stop him. His lips slowly brushed against hers. The sensation was most pleasant. A ripple of heat ran through her. His hand stroked her hair. Her scalp tingled. Her body relaxed.

Panic set in suddenly. She tensed again. She didn’t know what to do, how to respond. Yet respond she did, as if her body were no longer her own. Her knees grew watery. She gripped Gavin’s shoulders for support. He pulled her closer still. His arms wrapped firmly around her, drawing her into a muscled chest.

And still his lips worked their magic, now nipping her lower one, teasing her. He licked the corner of her mouth and trailed kisses along her jaw. Her head fell back. A shudder rushed up her spine.

This is heaven.

His kisses continued along her exposed throat. She began to throb everywhere. Her fingers kneaded his shoulder. She heard a noise that sounded like a satisfied growl come from him.

Then his lips were gone. A shiver passed through her as the gentle breeze blew. She opened her eyes, only to meet his gazing down at her. He brushed a kiss against her temple, another one on her cheek. The slow play of his mouth began again as he caressed her. The throbbing built within her, starting an ache that clamored for a satisfaction she didn’t know how to satisfy.

Elizabeth opened her mouth to speak, to ask what was happening. Gavin’s hand, tangled in her curls, caught them and pulled slightly, forcing her head back. His eyes glowed, a heat in them that frightened and excited her at the same time.

Then his mouth was upon hers, gentle no longer. She clung to him. His tongue demanded to mate with hers, taking, taking. Again and again he took from her, even her very breath, till she no longer knew where she ended and he began. His arms pinned her against him. Her breasts ached. Her bones melted. A dizziness swept across her. She wanted this to go on. Forever.

A rooster crowed in the distance. It brought her to her senses. She broke their embrace.

Weekend Writing Warriors ~ 3/08/15 Beloveds

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors!

I’m finally back with my current WIP, a medieval short novella, called Beloveds. It has the same characters as my Time Enough to Love trilogy, so if you’ve been wanting more about Alyse, here you go. There has been some very creative punctuation demonstrated in this snippet.

Please forgive the still very rough first draft. I was out of town last week and playing catch-up all this week, but I  sear I’m finishing this and sending it off to my beta readers this week!  Meanwhile, this snippet continues where we left off last time, with Alyse discovering Thomas in her bed chamber.

“Is it really you?” Strength welled within Alyse and she struggled to sit up.

“As ever I was.” His gaze swept down her body and his eyes darkened with the desire she remembered well.

“Oh, Thomas.” She threw her arms around him, sighing when they embraced the hard-muscled chest she had lain upon so often. “I thought you dead, my love. Did I but dream?”

That’s all for this week. Hope you enjoyed it!

 CowboyUp2GroupBundle_HR

The first book, Cowboy Up featured cowboys from every walk of life-Border Patrol Agents, Equine Therapists, Farmers… Cowboy Up 2 features sexy men who are ready to steal your heart! ❤

The hero of The Heartbroken Cowboy has his own issues. He’s a recovering alcoholic who allows stress to push him off the wagon. But he’s still determined to latch on to the one woman whose secret could send him back to the bottle.

Johnson O’Neill was a minor character in The Heartsong Cowboy (Cowboy Up book 1) and while he came off as a grouchy guy, he deserved his own happily ever after…but not without some work. In The Heartbroken Cowboy, we learn why he’s angry at women and cheer for him to find the one woman who will give him a run for his money!

The Heartbroken Cowboy by Melissa Keir Love isn’t found at the bottom of a bottle…

Johnson O’Neill joined The Heartsong Ranch to escape his addiction. One night at a friend’s wedding, stress causes him to fall off the wagon and into the arms of the woman of his dreams.
Debra Donahue lost her husband to alcohol then pulled herself up by her bootstraps becoming a million-dollar selling real estate agent. One night with a sexy cowboy and a bottle of whiskey, Debra falls hard.
Can an alcoholic cowboy and a brokenhearted woman find love despite their fears? Or will the bottom of a bottle claim another happily ever after?

EXCERPT: “I don’t drink, but could use a strong one, right now. Not this sissy stuff.” He lifted the glass to his lips, downed the contents, and shoved his now-empty champagne flute away before he leaned in toward her. The smell of alcohol on his breath hinted that he’d already had too much to drink. “Know anyone around here with some whiskey?” The dark sapphire of his eyes chilled her. This was a man used to getting what he wanted. “I’d even share.” His voice deepened and became husky with his offer and she shivered.
“I don’t drink with men I don’t know.” Debra stuck out her hand. “I’m Debra, and you are?”
The man grabbed another glass of champagne off a passing waiter’s tray and guzzled the drink in one swallow. “The name’s Johnson O’Neill. Now about that whiskey.” He reached out and drew her up to standing then tugged her in close to him. Wrapping his arm around her back, he moved her body in a slow two-step motion.
Debra gazed into his eyes. “You don’t have to seduce me for the whiskey.” She stepped out of his embrace and put her hands on her hips. She frowned.
“That’s not why I drew you into my arms. You were tapping your foot when I arrived—and I thought you might like a dance. A pretty woman like you shouldn’t be sitting alone.” He stretched his palm out again in a plea.

Medieval Monday ~ Berengaria Brown

MedMon

Welcome back to Medieval Monday!

My guest today is Berengaria Brown with her spicy menage romance Restoring Garnet’s Heart!

bb-es-garnets-full-199x300

BLURB:

Tragically widowed, Garnet is loved by two men. If a noble lady can have two men, why can’t a mere sewing woman? Garnet decides she’ll marry them both! Then she adopts two orphaned, starving little girls.

Garnet, Byram, and Carlysle are sent to repair the demesne. Can they achieve this huge task before the harvest is gathered in? First a high stone wall needs to be built to protect them from attackers. The buildings must be cleaned and repaired, the crops sown, weeded, cared for, and hopefully reaped. Is it possible to complete such a huge undertaking before the next vicious winter arrives? Will the peasants help them?

Meanwhile Lady Elinor gives birth to the heir of the stronghold, and Lord Rhys and Lady Rhyannon, with Alistair and Lord Devon, go to court to sort out her inheritance.

And what about Garnet’s threesome relationship? Will that be successful?

EXERPT:

Lady Elinor stared at the two children in front of her. One, a girl, looked to be about six years old and dragged a cooking pot with a few possessions inside it. Her arms and legs were stick-thin, her hair was falling out in clumps, and her belly was swollen.

The child had been eating bark and leaves to try to stem her hunger, and her belly was full of air, assumed Garnet, who was standing beside Lady Elinor among the other sewing women of the castle.

The younger child, which could be either a girl or boy, and was maybe three years old, clutched the older one’s tunic in one hand, and sucked hard on its other thumb. It, too, was painfully thin, though less bloated by starvation.

“You wish to become my slave?” Lady Elinor’s voice was even and mild, but Garnet knew she was shocked. Peasant men from the smallest of uncaring Lord Jeffrey’s hamlets had begged to become slaves of the castle in return for food during this terrible winter, but few females, and no one as young as this little child.

“Yes, Lady Elinor. I can scare birds from the crops when they’re planted, and clean for you. Ysabel will stay with me. I’ve always looked after her since Ma died, and she won’t touch the seedlings. She’s a good girl, and no trouble at all. And I will grow big, and learn to fight for you and Lord Rhys, and then I’ll kill the men who murdered our Pa and took all our hamlet’s food,” the child finished fiercely, almost in a shout.

Garnet felt her eyebrows rise and forced her face not to break into a grin. It was plain this tiny, starved child had the heart of a warrior indeed.

Lady Elinor rested her hand on her huge belly. It was almost time for the heir to the stronghold to be born.

“Well then, Nerida is already learning warrior skills, and if the heir to the stronghold is a girl, she will be a warrior, too. I see no reason why you can’t also be a warrior, if that is your desire. What is your name, and where are the other people from your hamlet?”

“I’m Ava, lady, and I promise to serve you forever. Most of the people left after the soldiers came raiding. Some have tried to help Ysabel and me, but I’d rather work for my food.”

Garnet watched Ava’s thin, little shoulders straighten as she spoke. At her age, Garnet would never have dared to approach the Lady of the Castle, and Garnet had never been a shy child. But this girl was truly a warrior born. She was that rare being who combined the ability to think of a solution to a problem with the courage to step outside any rules of society and do it, no matter what the consequences may turn out to be.

Without stopping to think, Garnet moved to stand where Lady Elinor could see her. “The two girls may share my room, lady, and I will supervise their activities.”
“It is decided then, Ava. You and Ysabel may join the stronghold. We will feed you, and you will work. You will obey Garnet in all things. Do you understand?”
“Yes, lady, thank you.”

Ava dropped to her knees and pressed her face to Lady Elinor’s feet. Ysabel copied her.

Garnet’s eyes flooded with tears. Peasants always died when there was trouble in the land, especially the very old and the very young. They weren’t strong enough to fight back or fast enough to run away. But this child deserved to live.

Garnet’s husband, Roldan, had been one of Lord Rhys’s soldiers, and was killed in the battle that took the lives of Lady Elinor’s father and brothers and caused Lord Rhys to lose his demesne to Lord Jeffrey. They had been married only six months, not long enough for her to worry about not getting pregnant, but now he was dead, the parents of these children were dead, and Ava was a daughter any woman would be proud to call her own.

Cowboy Born, Cowboy Bred by D’Ann Lindun

Blurb:

Freedom or family?  Only love can make the choice.

Photographer Alannah Murphy refuses to be tied down. She watched her parents struggle to hold onto their dairy farm until it killed them. The mere thought of the same fate makes her shudder. When she meets rancher Sterling Gentry she has to face her fears, or lose him.

Sterling Gentry longs for someone to hand his ranch down to. Like his father before him, he has sacrificed everything to hold onto the land his ancestors settled. But finding Ms. Right proves harder than he imagined. Then he meets Alannah Murphy with her big city ways. How he can ever take a chance with a woman exactly like his mother, who abandoned him when he was a child?

Despite their determination to stay the course they’ve each chosen, attraction pulls them together as steadily as a nail to a magnet. Can these two find a way to mesh Alannah’s need for freedom and Gentry’s desire to hold onto his land?

Excerpt:

Still snapping photos, the woman approached him. When she came within speaking distance, she waved. “Hello.”

“Who the hell are you? And what are you doing in the middle of the road? Don’t you know better than to stand in the way when somebody’s herding stock?”

Her mouth opened and closed a couple times. “I didn’t think—”

“Hell no, you didn’t think,” Gentry shouted. “Damn it anyway.”

“I’m sorry,” she said in a small voice. “The shot was just so good…”

The shot? She’d ruined hours upon hours of exhausting work because she’d wanted a picture? Who the hell would do something so stupid?

Only a damn greenhorn.

For the first time he noticed her get-up. A straw hat only a city girl would wear, floaty pink top with tiny straps that left her bare shoulders exposed to the unforgiving Arizona sun, cut-off jean shorts and red cowboy boots. Daisy Duke personified. He shook his head in disgust.

Reality crashed over him.

The New York photographer his mother had enticed out here, hoping an article in The Cowboy magazine would bring attention to the Santa Gertrudis cattle they raised.

Damn.
