Welcome back to another week’s installment of Jenna’s 411!

Book Chat ~ Pitch to Publication Contest

WIDOWI don’t normally enter writing contests. I’ve not had the best luck with them, with the exception of Finish the Damn Book last year. However, this one sounded too good to pass up.

It’s put on by Samantha Fountain and if I win, I get a month of editing from a freelance editor and the opportunity for the edited book to be sent to agents and (hopefully) to publishing houses. I’d been thinking about revising my Regency romance To Woo a Wicked Widow for pitching at RWA, so I started early, created a new Chapter 1 (new place for the book to begin), switched some of my characters’ motivations around, and came up with I what I hope is a fresh take on this story.  Here’s the new blurb:

Even widows need a little wickedness in their lives.

Although drawn to the vivacious Lady Cavendish, Nash, Earl of Wrotham, deplores her outrageous conduct. The beautiful woman was all but compromised by the ton’s most notorious rakehell, garnering her the nickname “The Wicked Widow.” It’s enough to take her off Nash’s list of possible wives. When her father blackmails him into wooing and wedding her, however, Nash reluctantly relents and vows to keep the lovely widow out of the rake’s bed, off the scandal sheets, and totally unaware of her father’s scheme for their marriage.

Charlotte, Lady Cavendish is overdue for happiness. Forced by her tyrannical father to wed a man she hated, the now widowed Charlotte swears never to marry again. A discrete affair, however, with the Earl of Wrotham would be an excellent compromise. Yet the dashing earl sets off alarm bells in her heart, and her vow of independence slips as she grows closer to Nash. But when she discovers his treachery and her father’s involvement, can she ever trust him enough to risk her heart and marry again?

UPDATE!!!  I just received notification from Samantha at Pitch to Publication that my entry is in! So at least one (hopefully all five) of the editors I chose will get to read my query. I’ll find out this weekend if I get a request for a partial.  Going into writing cave to polish that book now!

On the Home Front ~  Paradise

ParadiseOceanClubThursday my whole family went to the beach. This was actually quite a production because my two daughters had to take the day off from work, we packed up the car, stopped for snacks, then headed to Fort Monroe, where my husband used to work. They have a pool/beach and restaurant called the Paradise Ocean Club and we hung out there for most of the afternoon–until the thunderstorm rolled through about 3:30. Very relaxing. I got to go in the water (pool not beach) and actually got some reading done (I’m about 3/4 through Echo In the Bone–Outlander #7).  I don’t get to take off and do that often, especially not all of us together. Fun day!

Jenna Fun Fact of the Week

Gnarly_GolfI don’t play video games very much any more, but when I was into them, my favorite game was Gnarly Golf. It was made for the Apple IIGS and came out in 1989. I so wish it was still around and playable! I’m  not a golf fan, but this was a blast. The holes were insane: one was a jail cell,  a life raft, a pool table, and the 18th hole (which my husband got to but I never did) was the motherboard of a computer. The music was a funky little tune that sounded like a synthesized banjo that played constantly. LOVED IT!

So, how’s your week been?

Weekend Writing Warriors ~ 6/28/15 Crashing Through Time

weekend_writing_warriors_header3

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors!

Since my time travel novella, Crashing Through Time, released in the boxed set Crashing Into Love, is so new, I’m sticking with it for this week as well .  So I’ve 10 or so lines from it that follow just a little after last week’s snippet.

CrashingIntoLove_HR

This is the middle of the first chapter. Corrine has crash landed in a sightseeing plane on the coast of Cornwall in England. She’s gone into the woods to have a “private moment” and hears a strange noise. She then sees a well and is drawn to it .

The volume of the jingling glass choir no longer felt painful, although it was certainly much louder than when she’d begun walking toward it. Had someone put an amplifier in an abandoned well? Had she stumbled upon some sort of bizarre entertainment? She didn’t think so, because the rest of the forest was still. Not even any birds chirping; of course, she couldn’t have heard them if they were. What the hell was going on here?

Curiosity replaced fear and she stepped up to the structure until the well’s rim pressed into her stomach. Taking a deep breath, she leaned over the edge, peering into the darkness. The angelic choir hit a single high note with the force of a gale wind. Her head filled with an eerie white light, she swayed over the edge, and plunged into the inky depths.

Crashing Through Time is available in Crashing Into Love and can be found on Amazon for just .99!

That’s all for this week. Hope you enjoyed it!

And don’t forget to check out the rest of the Warriors here.  There’s some fantastic snippets to be read.

Tour_Eiffel_(2519307688)On the Home Front ~  Reunion

Yesterday I drove to Washington, DC to have lunch with a friend, Michelle Washington, who I had not seen for 14 years. The last time I saw her, in fact, was when my husband and I stayed with her and her husband in Paris for our anniversary. Since then, my friend and her husband have been doing some globe trotting and so we had a lot to catch up on.  They’re now back in the States, so we’ll get to see each other much more often!

Jenna Fun Fact of the Week

Love_&_Mercy_(poster)I’ve seen more movies in the past week than in the past 6 months put together.  Last week I talked about going to see Jurassic World. Well, for my daughter’s birthday, we went to see Spy, starring Melissa McCarthy, and for our anniversary, I took my hubby to see Love & Mercy, the story of Brian Wilson of the Beach Boys. And I saw a trailer for a movie I want to see, Mr. Holmes. Looks awesome!  Do you go to the movies more in the summer?

The Romance of Time Travel

399px-face_of_an_old_clock

Recently, there has been an upsurge in the number of time travel romances on the market. One reason that leaps to mind readily is the wildly popular Outlander books and television series. The books have been out since the early 1990s and have a huge following, even greater now that the series has captivated a whole new generation of audiences. I daresay we will see quite a few time travel books come out in the next year or so to help feed that growing interest.

The interest in time travel, however, has been there much longer. H.G.Wells’s The Time Machine comes immediately to mind…

If you’d like to read more of my post from Nights of Passion, please click here.  It includes an exclusive excerpt from my time travel novella, Crashing Through Time.

Thanks so much for coming by! Don’ forget the Crashing Into Love Rafflecopter Giveaway. Grand prizes are 7 books and a $50.00 gift card. To sign up, just click the Crashing Into Love Icon on the upper sidebar.

Crashing Into Love is available at Amazon for just .99!

Medieval Monday ~ Viking Flame by Andrea Cooper

Today my guest on Medieval Monday is Andrea Cooper with her medieval romance, Viking Flame. Hope you enjoy!

andrea-cooper-cover

Blurb:

Bram has agreed to marry an Irish nobleman’s daughter in exchange for land and his services fighting with the Laird Liannon’s clan against rival Irishmen. However, Bram’s intended does not stir his heart. Not like the Laird’s daughter, Kaireen.  Somehow, he must not only convince the Laird to amend his marriage contract, but win the heart of the stubborn feisty Kaireen.

Excerpt:

Near the beach, the man quit rowing and yanked out a knife.

Bram didn’t move. “You go against your Captain’s orders t—”

“You made it to shore. That’s all we’s promised.” He spat at Bram’s boots. “No one said anything about you living afterwards.” When he dove forward, Bram ducked to the side and snatched the sailor’s arm, pinning it to his side. When the sailor slung with his free arm, Bram increased the pressure until the man was on his knees.

“Cease, or I will break your arm.” If it wasn’t for his pledge to Morga, he’d have snapped the man’s arm already. Once his contract was signed with the Laird, then he’d be free to fight in Ireland—or at least against other Vikings and rival Irishmen. The man continued to struggle, “Or perhaps a leg as well? What will your Captain say if you return without your weapon and injured? Will he be merciful and allow you to recover or throw you to the sharks?”

“Heathen scum!” He twisted his body to escape Bram’s grip.

As he did, Bram snapped the man’s wrist backward and the first mate let out a howl before the blade came closer to Bram’s chest.

“Now, hand me the knife.” When the man glared at him, he increased pressure on the bent wrist. “Or this heathen might do worse so that not even the sharks would want you.”

The first mate gulped and released his hold of the knife.

Bram broke his hold and snatched the blade out of the air before it hit the water. “Tell your Captain, I will not forget his hospitality nor will any of my eight brothers.”

The man paled. “What brings you to our island? To rape our women and pillage our churches?”

“No.” Bram rose and tucked the small blade into his boot. “To find my bride.”

Weekend Writing Warriors ~ 6/21/15 Crashing Through Time

weekend_writing_warriors_header3

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors!

And now my problem from last week has increased. I now have three books released back to back. So I think I’ll try running them in repertory, one after the other throughout the summer, unless another one comes along. LOL

This past week my time travel novella, Crashing Through Time, released in the boxed set Crashing Into Love.  So I’ve 10 or so lines from it so you can check it out.

CrashingIntoLove_HR

This is the middle of the first chapter. Corrine has crash landed in a sightseeing plane on the coast of Cornwall in England. She’s gone into the woods to have a “private moment” and hears a strange noise.

The dreadful noise seemed to come from both inside and outside her head. Hands over her ears to dull the sensation a little, she staggered toward the grayish object.

The clinking got louder as she approached the…was it a well? Made of ragged, crumbling gray stones, it looked like… Corrine stopped dead in her tracks.  It looked like the well from that horrible movie The Ring. She’d watched it alone one Halloween and had to sleep with the light on for two weeks. No way was she going closer to that thing. She turned around, walking resolutely away.

What if that girl was creeping up behind her now?

Crashing Through Time is available in Crashing Into Love and can be found on Amazon.

That’s all for this week. Hope you enjoyed it!

And don’t forget to check out the rest of the Warriors here.  There’s some fantastic snippets to be read.

Jenna’s 411 ~ 6/17/2015

26572416_s

Welcome back to another week’s installment of Jenna’s 411!  I know I’ve been away for a while, but life has just taken me all over the place, as you’ll see below!

Book Chat ~ Crashing Through Time Releases

CrashingIntoLove3DBoxSetTwo weeks early, the boxed set I’m part of, Crashing  Into Love, released late last night!  Whoo Hoo! That makes three releases for me in 16 days. I’m stunned!

This is set is really the bomb. 7 stories of survival and love from best-selling authors D’Ann Lindun, Daryl Devore, Lisa Kumar, Brenda Dyer, Melissa Keir, Deb Julienne, and yours truly.

Here’s the blurb:  Seven planes lift off…seven planes crash…seven stories of struggle, passion and love in the barren Canadian Wilderness, the coast of England, or the steamy heat of a tropical island. Romance hangs in the balance between survival and death.

And here’s the blurb for my novella, Crashing Through Time:

More than hearts can be broken when you crash through time.

Corrine MacGowan survives a plane crash only to fall down a hole in time. In 1868 Cornwall she faces the ultimate decision: Let the man she loves die, or save him and change history forever.

If you want to read more , it’s available at Amazon for only .99! Grab your copy today!

On the Home Front ~  Happy Birthday, Ellie!

Ellie BirthdayYesterday was my daughter’s birthday. We celebrated by going to a sushi restaurant for lunch, then taking her to see the new Melissa McCarthy movie Spy (which I quite enjoyed) then had ice cream cake and sparkling cider afterwards. As a little kicker Crashing Through Time, which is dedicated to her, released on her birthday.

Jenna Fun Fact of the Week

jurassic-world-own-raptors-posterI was one of the millions of people who were thrilled to death on the opening weekend of Jurassic World. I went with  my daughters on Friday, and we all just loved it. There were some scenes I didn’t watch, but over all, I thought it was a great thrill ride.  It may even have moved into my #1 slot for the Jurassic Park movies, even though I loved Jurassic Park 3. Let’s just say I’d spend money to go see JW again on the big screen. 🙂

Have you seen it yet?

Medieval Monday ~ The Heart of the Phoenix by Barbara Bettis

Today my guest on Medieval Monday is Barbara Bettis with her medieval romance, The Heart of the Phoenix. Hope you enjoy!

BARBARA BETTIS

Blurb:

Some call him a ruthless mercenary; she calls him the knight of her heart Memories  Lady Evelynn’s childhood hero is home—bitter, hard, tempting as sin. And haunted by secrets. A now-grown Evie offers friendship, but Sir Stephen’s cruel rejection crushes her, and she resolves to forget him. Yet when an unexpected war throws them together, she finds love isn’t so easy to dismiss. If only the king hadn’t betrothed her to another.  Can be cruel

Sir Stephen lives a double life while he seeks the treacherous outlaws who murdered his friends. Driven by revenge, he thinks his heart is closed to love. His childhood shadow, Lady Evie, unexpectedly challenges that belief. He rebuffs her, but he can’t forget her, although he knows she’s to wed the king’s favorite.  And deadly

When his drive for vengeance leads to Evie’s kidnapping, Stephen must choose between retribution and the love he’s denied too long. Surely King John will see reason. Convict the murderers; convince the king. Simple. Until a startling revelation threatens everything.

Excerpt:

“I don’t believe you heard me, Sir Stephen.” Evie’s words dripped honey. “I’m going home on orders of my brother. If the travelers Davy were to join haven’t appeared, then he can accompany me.” She shot a glance toward the youth, deep in conversation with the maid.

The back of Stephen’s neck tingled, and he clenched his hands. God’s blood, she made him so angry he longed to grab those soft arms and shake some sense into her.

“You are not remaining at the monastery, and you are not traveling to England.” His words came out in a growl. He stepped forward, and she tilted back her head to meet him eye to eye. “Must I tie you to that horse?”

She leaned in. “Just you try, Sir Stephen-the-Bully.”

He glared and crossed his arms against his chest, daring her to continue.

“Do as you think you must.” She echoed his stance, her crossed arms pushing her plump breasts higher.

Not that he noticed, blast her.

“I vow I will return the moment I’m free,” she added. “You have no authority over my movements, for you are no relative of mine.”

“And I thank God for it. How Henry has put up with you all these years I do not know. A more troublesome, contentious wi…woman I’ve never seen.”

“Did you call me a witch?”

Weekend Writing Warriors ~ 6/14/15 Only Marriage Will Do

weekend_writing_warriors_header3

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors!

The problem with having two books release back to back is that you never know which one to promote first! But this past week was Only Marriage Will Do‘s release week, so I’ve put up another 10 lines from it.

Marriage 2

I’m starting at the beginning of Chapter 2, where Amiable is about to take action against St. Cyr’s claim to Juliet:

Blood roared in Amiable’s ears, as though he stood in the heat of battle. He drew his sword and lunged, aiming to skewer the Frenchman through the stomach. “The law will matter not at all if you are dead, St. Cyr.”

St. Cyr grasped the knob of his walking stick and pulled a thin blade free just in time to parry the thrust. He then scampered for the door, calling out in English, “This is not the end of this, Juliet. I will return with the authorities and make you see reason.”

As the viscount fled the room, Amiable scrambled after him.

“Let him go.” Juliet tugged his arm.

Only Marriage Will Do is available here.

That’s all for this week. Hope you enjoyed it!

And don’t forget to check out the rest of the Warriors here.  There’s some fantastic snippets to be read.
