Medieval Monday ~ First Kiss from Betrothal

Medieval Monday is back, with a new twist. This time around we post excerpts that fulfill a different requirement each week. This week we must post an excerpt that involves a kiss. So my excerpt will be from my medieval series Time Enough to Love, the first book of which is Betrothal, with Alyse and Geoffrey’s first kiss.

“Would you share something else besides news, Sir Geoffrey?”

“That I would, little maid.” He spun around before she could back away. He darted his hand out to secure hers again and raised it to his mouth. “It seems, however, that I must be content with this.” He grazed her skin with his lips, skimming over the surface of her flesh with a floating touch that made her shiver. “And with my news. You know the king called for a joust, a Round Table, at Windsor next week to celebrate the princess’s betrothal?”

Alyse nodded and frowned. The mere thought of jousting sent a quiver of dread down her spine. But his statement was hardly news; the court had been preparing for the tournaments for weeks.

“It has been decreed by His Majesty that on the first day the festivities will begin with a procession of ladies and knights of King Arthur’s court, starting at the Tower of London and winding through the town out to the lists. There are to be twenty-five knights on the king’s side who will joust and fight in a pas d’armes. So there needs be twenty-five ladies as well, to escort them to the field.”

She nodded again. “Princess Joanna rides in this procession.” Her part in the festivities had been determined last week. Did he have anything truly new to impart?

“You have been chosen to be one of the ladies.”

Alyse’s mouth dropped open and a thrill coursed through her. “But I am only Princess Joanna’s attendant, Sir Geoffrey. Usually such honors are reserved for the queen and Princess Isabella’s ladies, or the Duchesses and Countesses in the Royal Family. Why did they choose me?”

“Because I am to be one of the knights, and I begged a boon of the king to allow you to be my lady.”

She stared at him in shock, almost unbelieving, though she knew he would not lie about such a thing. To think she owed such an honor to the man she would soon call husband, that he had asked the king himself to grant the favor, made her heart beat an unsteady march in her chest. Alyse parted her lips to thank him when he swooped forward, secured her chin in his hand and kissed her.

Strangely soft, yet very sweet, his touch sent a searing bolt straight to her stomach, setting it afire. After moments that seemed an eternity, his mouth slackened on hers as though he would release her. Then he flicked the tip of his tongue across the hard-pressed seam of her mouth, testing for another invitation.

With a gasp she jumped back, drawing a chuckle from Geoffrey, who had the grace to glance around to make sure they had not been observed. “Be not discomfited, sweet. We are safe in our conversation.”

“’Twas not in our conversation that I feared harm, my lord.” Lord, ’twas difficult to sound outraged when she could still feel his lips on hers.

“Come, my lady, ’twas only courtly affection I did show you.” Geoffrey’s words might have been believable if not for the wicked grin that accompanied them.

Only Marriage Will Do is On Sale!

My publisher informed me that Only Marriage Will Do, the second book of my House of Pleasure Georgian  romance series,  is on sale this month and next month for .99! If you haven’t read it yet, here’s a great opportunity to get a great book at a great price. 🙂

Marriage new full

Not every happy-ever-after begins at “I do.”

When the man of her dreams rescues Lady Juliet Ferrers from the villain claiming to be her husband, she is sure she has found her one true love. But is she free to marry him? Not to be deterred, Juliet arranges for her hero to escort her to her family estate in far off Northern England—hoping that along the way she can win his love—and his hand…

Captivated by Juliet’s sweetness and beauty, Captain Amiable Dawson can’t help but be spellbound by the promise of a life with her. But the spell breaks when questions arise about her marital status. Soon the upstanding Amiable is unsure if he is indeed married to Juliet. And when his rival absconds with her, Amiable must choose between the law of the land and his heart’s desire to rescue Juliet once more…

And here’s an excerpt to whet your appetite:

The clock on the mantle chimed the quarter hour. After one o’clock in the morning and, despite the excitement of the day, her escape from London, her afternoon nap and its disturbing dream, Juliet still couldn’t sleep.

After almost an hour of tossing and turning in her wretched bed, she’d sent Glynis to the kitchen to see if they had kept hot water over the fire. Perhaps a bath would soothe her enough to make sleep possible. Had she brought her lavender oil? So calming. Surely that would help.

She slipped on her robe and padded to her traveling trunk at the end of the bed. She lifted the lid and pulled out the box that held her soaps and perfumes. As she checked the vials, a tentative knock sounded at the door.

“Come in, Glynis.” She uncapped a vial and sniffed the contents. Jasmine. No. Not for the bath.

The door opened.

“Are they bringing the tub? I think the lavender oil will help me relax.”

“Very good, my lady.” The deep masculine voice froze her, vial in hand.

Her head snapped up.

A towering male figure stood shadowed in the doorway.

Dear God, Philippe had found her.

“Or is it Mrs. Dawson perhaps?”

No accent. He was not Philippe. A hired thug sent to kidnap her?

Strength drained away. She dropped the box and whirled around, seeking a way out of the room that suddenly seemed to close in on her.

Bottles crashed and the reek of jasmine filled the room. Juliet shrieked and stumbled back behind the bed. Trapped. Easy prey.

The man raced toward her, calling out something she couldn’t hear for the blood pounding in her ears. The candle he carried blew out. He cursed and reached for her.

“Nooo! Get away. Don’t touch me.” Slapping at his hands, she twisted to avoid him and landed with a thud, flat on her back. Air rushed out of her lungs.

He sped around the end of the bed.

She struggled to scream for Glynis, but produced only a high-pitched squeak.

The man knelt beside her.

Dear Lord, where was her rescuer now?

Only Marriage Will Do is available on AMAZON now for only .99!

If you haven’t read book one, Only Scandal Will Do, it’s also available on AMAZON.

Jenna’s 411 ~ 9/25/2015 The Plant that Ate Jenna Jaxon

26572416_s

Welcome back to another week’s installment of Jenna’s 411! Life is busier than ever.

The Plant that Ate Jenna Jaxon

This post is in lieu of a real Jenna’s 411 post, but I wanted to let you know why I’ve been so quiet on the blog and on social media.

I’ve been eaten by a plant!

AUDREY 2 #4

Audrey #4–the final plant. It will be a bit more embellished. And sing and dance. 🙂

That’s right, Audrey 2 from Little Shop of Horrors, has gobbled me whole. I’ve been working night and day to help get this production up by next Thursday. And as I told you in a previous Jenna 411, not only am I doing props for the show, I’m acting in it as well! I haven’t been on stage in almost 20 years, but I love this show so much I kind of bullied my way into the troupe.

I’ve cut back on my sleeping to about 4-5 hours a night, which is not enough for me any more, I can tell you!

AUDREY 2 #1

And I’m trying to finish up Only A Mistress Will Do so vigorously that I’ve taken to writing longhand anywhere I possibly can. In-between classes, waiting in line for  anything, during lunch.

So I’ve been much absent elsewhere, for which I apologize profoundly. But, the productionAUDREY 2 #3 will be finished on October 4 and hopefully things will be back to normal chaos. (No guarantees on that, however!)

So if you bear with me for another week, I’ll be turning out Cover Spots, Medieval Mondays, Jenna’s 411, and some new craft oriented posts as well.

So enjoy the pics of our Audrey 2 that we rented for the show. So exciting! We finally got to work with it and the puppeteer at rehearsal tonight. Which was awesome!

I so love this show! See you in two weeks!

So, how’s your week been?

Medieval Monday ~ Betrayal: Animal Attraction

Medieval Monday is back, with a new twist. This time around we post excerpts that fulfill a different requirement each week. This  week we must post a scene with an animal. So my excerpt will be from Betrayal, Book 2 of my medieval series Time Enough to Love.

MedMon

EXCERPT:

“I would have you ride with me at least part of the way, my lady, if you have a mind to. We may then avail ourselves of the excellent weather and I of your charming company. The carriage will be there if you tire.”

Her spirits rose at his words. “Oh, Thomas, I would very much like to ride with you. ’Twould be such fun.” She all but danced on her toes in eagerness. “I have had little chance to ride these many months and have sorely missed it.” She sent him a heartfelt smile. “Thank you!” Impetuously, she reached up to press a quick kiss to his cheek.

“You are most welcome, my dear.” He returned the smile, though his eyes held a peculiar gleam. “So, will this gown serve for riding?”

“Aye, it will.” She hastily made her ablutions, humming under her breath with excitement. The promise of a ride had brightened her day considerably.

When she was ready, he offered his arm and led her down to the courtyard just as the sun rose. Thomas stopped at a well-proportioned chestnut mare with a white blaze down her nose and two white stockings.

Alyse’s mouth dropped open, and she dashed toward her waiting mount to run a soft hand down the noble nose and pat the sleek, proud neck. “She is beautiful, Thomas!”

“She is yours.” She gasped and clamped her hand to her mouth to contain a squeal of joy. “A wedding present to you from His Majesty, the king.”

“From the king!” She stood stock still, the significance of the gift washing through her, and her elation cooled.

He was trying to make amends for the true husband he had taken from her.

She shook her head. Such unkind thoughts about the king were dangerous. And whatever had gone before, Thomas was now her husband in truth.

Alyse closed her eyes and choked back a sob. She had tried so diligently not to think of Geoffrey these past weeks. The saving grace of the wedding and last night had been the confusion created by the ceremony, the feast, and the bedding. After Thomas had disrobed, the sight of him—and the feel of his body on hers—had banished all other thoughts.

Only when he had suggested she pretend he was Geoffrey did those memories break through. She had cursed him then for bringing back her heartache, though he had not meant to hurt her. He had merely wanted her to be able to play her part in the false consummation. And it had worked, although not as he had perhaps expected. Everything about Thomas—his touch, his scent, the feel of his body on hers—had differed from her experience with Geoffrey. That difference had allowed her to push the memories aside once more and fix her attention on the counterfeit.

And she had to be grateful for his unquestioning acceptance of her decision not to lie with him. It had been a harder decision to make than she had expected; her long hesitation before giving him her answer attested to that. Lady Carlyle’s presence, of course, had been a factor. Jealousy had burned strong in both of them last night. But Thomas was her husband, and even though she was not in love with him, she did not want him to stray. Mayhap she should have said aye to his question. Should have put Geoffrey behind her and started a new life. But she could not make herself say the word. Jealous or not, she needed more time before she could agree to that final betrayal of her love.

“Alyse?” Thomas had finished checking the girths and now stood before her. “What is wrong, sweet?”

The genuine concern in his voice smote her conscience. Without a word, she threw her arms around his waist. He was a good man. The circumstances were not his fault, any more than they were hers or Geoffrey’s.

“Oh, a sudden sadness at the changes afoot, ’tis all.” She released him and dashed the tears from her eyes.

“They are many, ’tis true. And here is another, cheerier one for you to consider.” He hoisted Alyse up onto the horse and settled her comfortably astride. “Will you name your mount? She had some outlandish long name. The stable lad told me, but I have forgotten.” Thomas swung up onto his charger, Falcon.

“I can name her?” She forgot her tears as the new task engaged her. “I must think on it then. I will find the perfect name for the perfect horse.” She smiled at him as she patted the warm brown neck before her.

The morning had regained some of its splendor. A good omen for the beginning of their journey.

Betrayal and all books in the series are available at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Smashwords.

Hope you enjoyed this excerpt! See you next week!

Cover Spot: The Heart of the Phoenix by Barbara Bettis

THE HEART OF THE PHOENIX

THE HEART OF THE PHOENIX, the first in the Brotherhood of the Phoenix series, re-released Sept. 22 through Amazon Encore, and I’m so excited for Sir Stephen and Lady Evelynn to be in the forefront again. Here’s a glimpse of their story.

Some call him a ruthless mercenary; she calls him the knight of her heart.

Memories

Lady Evelynn’s childhood hero is home—bitter, hard, tempting as sin. And haunted by secrets. A now-grown Evie offers friendship, but Sir Stephen’s cruel rejection crushes her, and she resolves to forget him. Yet when an unexpected war throws them together, she finds love isn’t so easy to dismiss. If only the king hadn’t betrothed her to another.

Can Be Cruel

Sir Stephen lives a double life while he seeks the treacherous outlaws who murdered his friends. Driven by revenge he thinks his heart is closed to love until his childhood shadow, Lady Evie, unexpectedly challenges that belief. He rebuffs her, but he can’t forget her, although he knows she’s to wed the king’s favorite.

And Deadly

When his drive for vengeance leads to Evie’s kidnapping, Stephen must choose between retribution and the love he’s denied too long. Surely King John will see reason. Convict the murderers; convince the king. Simple. Until a startling revelation threatens everything.

Humor and Sex and Romance – oh my! by Sheri Fredricks

Monica Beggs Cover

We’ve read stories with angry sex. Then there are stories with uncontrolled sex. And drunk sex, maybe brother’s best friend sex, and if you’re into it—step brother sex. (sorry, in my mind I can’t go the way of Step-Father sex).

How about humorous sex? We all know humor and sex can go hand in hand.

MONICA BEGGS laughing couple

In all my stories, I’m not shy about mixing humor into my sex scenes. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t hesitate to add giddiness, fear, regret, or other emotions either. But I think this world is often too serious…and I like to laugh.

Sex in stories can be an emotional tool. It allows my characters to show their feelings. On the other hand, they can lack emotions or hide them altogether to create a specific character trait.

In Monica Beggs, I’ve taken two hardcore professions and shined a light of delight upon them both. While Monica and Finn both take their jobs seriously, they go easy on themselves when the time is right.

The question is: Will it be the right time for them both, at the same time?

Famous porn star Monica Beggs has wrapped up another grueling on-location movie shoot when the Colombian cartel attempts to kidnap her. Their guns are as real as the price on her pretty head.

Former Special Ops and present day surfer, Finn Daniels recognizes a lady in distress when he sees one—especially when it’s his adult film crush being hustled out the door. He’s no longer in the business of busting up the underworld, but that doesn’t deflect his moral compass.

Medieval Monday ~ Excerpt from Betrothal

Medieval Monday is back, with a new twist. This time around we post excerpts that fulfill a different requirement each week. For the first week we must post an excerpt with the meeting of the hero and heroine. So my excerpt will be from my medieval series Time Enough to Love, the first book of which is Betrothal.

MedMon

EXCERPT:

betrothal_1600x2400_96dpi“Rise, my lady.”

She did so on unsteady feet. “I am ready, as always, Your Majesty, to obey my father as I would you.”

Holy Mary, let it be Lord Braeton.

King Edward lifted an eyebrow toward Alyse. “A very pretty answer, my lady. And are you ready to accept your father’s decree for your betrothal? His messenger has today reached me with the contract, as I am to stand in his stead in this matter.”

Alyse took a deep breath and hoped her voice did not tremble. “Yea, Majesty, I will obey my father.”

King Edward nodded and leaned over to whisper something to Queen Phillipa, who sat beside him, heavy with their twelfth child.

Mere seconds before she learned her fate. She could scarce affect an indifferent pose before the court when inside every inch of her quivered with anticipation of the name. His name, pray God, on the king’s lips.

Thomas.

In her mind, she heard the word.

The king straightened, glanced at her then at the man by her side.

“What say you then, Sir Geoffrey? Does the lady not speak fair? I vow she will make you a proper wife and a dutiful one as well.”

Alyse turned, until that moment unaware that Geoffrey Longford stood beside her. Chills coursed down her body as the king’s words echoed in her mind. The sensation of falling backward assailed her, as though she rushed away from the tall man at her side even as his figure loomed larger and larger in her sight.

Not Lord Braeton.

Her numbed brain repeated the phrase, trying to comprehend that instead he would be her husband. Geoffrey Longford.

God have mercy on me, for by the look of him, this man will not.

Fearful, she cringed as her gaze climbed higher, over his chest, over his chin, finally resting on the dark blue eyes turned toward her.

Geoffrey returned her appraisal, his gaze sweeping her figure as a smile crept over his face. “Your Majesty.” He spoke to the king but his attention remained fixed on Alyse. “When my father told me of the betrothal contract before I left his home, I resolved to play the dutiful son. Now, however, I find I do not wish to act that role after all.” His eyes held hers as he paused.

Dear God, does he mean to renounce me here before the entire court?

Alyse stared at the man beside her, willing herself to remain upright, despite the waves of ice and fire alternating through her body.

“Now I find I would rather play the ardent lover.”

An amused murmur ran through the Hall at his words. Sir Geoffrey grinned, his eyes sparkling with humor and something more. Despite the uneven light, Alyse saw an unfathomable promise in their dark depths. She took a shaky breath and looked away.

“I affirm Lady Alyse to be all that could be hoped for in a wife. Please you and God, we shall make the match and with all good haste.”

His self-satisfied tone and the thought of his outrageous teasing touched a contrary nerve in Alyse. She pulled her wits together and beamed brilliantly at her newly-betrothed lord. “Take care, my lord, for the wise women say, ‘Marry in haste, repent at leisure.’”

Sir Geoffrey raised a dark eyebrow while those around the banquet hall laughed. Heart pounding at her audacity, Alyse watched helplessly as he reached over and lifted her hand. “Such repentance could never be suffered too slowly, my lady, if ’twere your gentle hand that held mine through it.”

Laughter and applause washed over Alyse, who was struck absolutely dumb at the touch of his lips to her skin. Her heart pounded, and a strange roaring sounded in her ears; she wondered vaguely if she were about to faint.

Betrothal and all books in the series are available at Amazon, Barnes & Noble, and Smashwords.

Hope you enjoyed this excerpt! See you next week!

UPDATE: Polish Up Your Manuscript! ~ It’s Rudy Time!

crwlogo

It is September 13, only two more weeks to enter my local RWA chapter’s annual writing contest. For the past three years it’s been called “Finish the Damn Book” in honor of Judi McCoy, a best-selling romance author and one of our chapter’s founding members who used to say that to us all the time.

This year, however, we’ve had to change the name of the contest and by unanimous vote we have changed it to “The Rudy,” in honor of Judi’s beloved bichon frise, named Rudy. We are still, however, staying with the spirit of “Finish the Damn Book” by requiring authors to submit a first and last chapter of their work, plus a synopsis (that will not be judged). This way the contest will be an added incentive for you to finish that manuscript that’s been sitting around for a while waiting forrudypic that push to complete it.

Let us be that push you need.

Details for the contest can be found on the Chesapeake Romance Writers website.

We have six categories: Contemporary, YA/NA, Historical, Paranormal, Mainstream with Romantic Elements, and Erotic. Each entry will have two judges for the preliminary round and score sheets will be returned after the contest closes in order for authors to get as much feedback as possible.

There will be three Finalists for each category whose work will be forwarded to the Finals judges. All Finals judges are either agents or acquiring editors. Here is the list of  our distinguished and utterly fantastic judges:

Contemporary–Penny Barber, editor Lyrical/Kensington Publishing

YA/NA–Nicole Resciniti, agent The Seymour Agency

Historical—Jordy Albert, agent Booker-Albert Agency

Mainstream w/Romantic Elements—Terrie Wolfe, agent AKA Agency

Paranormal—Amanda Barnett, editor The Wild Rose Press

Erotic—Bethany Burke, editor/owner Blushing Books, Inc.

Prizes for The Rudy are medallions: gold, silver, and bronze medals with “Rudy” embossed on them along with a certificate.

Entry fee is $15.00 for RWA members and $20.00 for non-RWA members.

Deadline for the contest is midnight, September 30, 2015. All entries must be submitted electronically in Rich Text Format, the total amount of pages not to exceed 40 pages, including a two page synopsis.

There is still time! Please send entries and inquiries to the CRW site above!

We are looking forward to seeing your book in the contest this year!

Cover Spot: The Blacksmith’s Bride by Patricia Green

Welcome back to my new feature called Cover Spot, in which I spotlight excellent covers of historical romance novels. I think romance novels have some of the most lovely covers and what better way to celebrate that than by putting them on display?

This week I’m spotlighting  another dear friend, author Patricia Green, and the beautiful cover to one of her rare historical romances, The Blacksmith’s Bride.

The Blacksimths Bride

Sunny Winslow knows exactly what she wants: a mature man, solid, reliable, true to his convictions, and handsome, who is established in her new town, Carrollton, Texas. When she meets the blacksmith, Abel Armstrong, she’s immediately hooked. Unfortunately, her mother has other plans for her that do not include a blacksmith. Her mother is determined to tie Sunny to a town counselor who has a suspicious past. Sunny is desperate to escape the counselor, so she embarks on a series of schemes to get what she wants.

Abel Armstrong has some skeletons in his closet. In the nineteenth century, it’s quite the scandal to be a divorced man. Over the course of the last ten years, he’s had to work very hard to get his reputation back. Meeting Sunny is like a breath of fresh air, but he can’t afford to throw caution to the wind and force their joining by doing something disreputable.

Can spankings teach Sunny to have some patience and trust that Abel’s way is the right way? And, can Abel deal with Sunny’s impulsive scheming and keep his standing in the community intact?

This book is one of the five books in the historical romance box set entitled, “The Sons of Johnny Hastings.” It includes books by Patricia Green, Patty Devlin, Renee Rose, Maddie Taylor, and Mary Wehr. All bestselling authors. Five books, all of one theme, for a great low price. Over 500 pages of spanking romance goodness.
