Book Chat ~ Only a Mistress Will Do

I am approaching the climax of Book 3 in The House of Pleasure series, Only a Mistress Will Do. This is the story of Duncan’s friend, Tristan Marshall, Viscount Trevor and I hope it releases late in 2016 or early 2017. It begins in the House of Pleasure and ends up…well, perhaps I’ll leave you in suspense about where it ends. 🙂

At the feeder2On the Home Front: SNOW!

Yes, as with most of the Mid-Atlantic East Coast, last weekend we were coated with  snow. Our bit of the world only got about 6 inches, most of which has  melted as of today. But it sure was pretty to watch. And to watch the cardinals in the back yard. 🙂

18-star-wars-poster_w529_h529Movie Madness!

I actually went to see a couple of movies over the Christmas break and I’d like to share some of what I saw.

Well, of course the big blockbuster was Star Wars: The Force Awakens. Absolutely loved it! When I heard J.J. Abrams was directing, I sort of suspected I would. It had a great story and just enough homage to the originals to make it perfect. (Abrams did the same thing with the first new Star Trek movie and it is still my favorite Star Trek movie). My daughters went  with me neither of whom had seen any Star Wars movies. At one point, after the  first battle sequence my elder daughter looked at me and said, “I’ve GOT to watch all of these!” I leaned over and whispered, “Just think if you’d seen that battle having NEVER seen anything like it before.” I still remember that rush. 🙂

And how’s your week been?

The Devil’s in the Details by Jenna Jaxon

I did a fun little post on Nights of Passion this past Sunday that I decided to share with you. How my adventures in shopping influence my writing. 🙂

Jenna Jaxon's avatarNights of Passion

shopping 1

I find myself at the grocery checkout quite often these days. Lines are long and I have time to idly “check out” the groceries of the person in front of me. I’m not sure if this is my own strange idiosyncrasy or if many people do this, but I do look at what people are buying and sort of ponder it.

I look first at what they’re buying. What’s in your cart is quite often a reflection of the purchaser.list 2 Diapers, baby food, baby wipes, of course, denote a new parent. Large purchases of beer or wine, chips and dip, and chicken wings says “Super Bowl Party!” in January (although you have to buy the wings ahead of time—I guarantee there will be no wings available come Super Bowl Sunday). Lots of fresh fruits and vegetables, and organic products say health conscious shopper.

What’s almost as fun to check out…

Medieval Monday ~ An Enthusiastic First Kiss from Tanis by Bambi Lynn

Welcome to Medieval Monday! This time around we post excerpts that fulfill a different requirement each month. For the month of January/February we must post an excerpt showing the first kiss of the heroine and hero. My guest today is Bambi Lynn with her medieval romance Tanis.

MedMon

Tanis_200x300He stopped abruptly when she appeared. His demeanor changing quickly from one of surprise to that of hungry predator. She smirked. He would soon see which of them was prey. She pressed him back into the room with a strength belied by the dainty hand on his immense chest. She kicked the door shut with her foot as they entered.

With one beefy arm around her waist, Tanis gathered her up against him. Fighting the urge to squeal with delight, Kiah wrapped both legs around him. He was massive. And hard.

She wore nothing beneath the fur around her waist that left her legs bare to her thighs and drove men wild. The ridges of his stomach teased her through the fabric of his shirt, but Kiah savored the anticipation of feeling his skin against her almost as much as the contact itself. It would be difficult to say which gave her more pleasure.

A choice she was glad she did not have to make.

Winding her arms around his neck, she captured his mouth with hers. She was hit with the most mind-numbing kiss she had known in all the ages. A groan of sheer ecstasy bubbled up in her throat. What elements caused such a reaction? Why did she not feel it with all men?

Why did it not last more than a few days?

She felt like she could fly, something she had done every day since her creation, one of few gifts withheld from man. But in human form, the sensation of flying was far greater than the reality. It was not fair.

Emotions combined with her human sensations, roiling through her in a tangled mess that left her bereft of coherent thought. She kissed him fiercely, inhaling his essence as her tongue danced with his. He smelled of male and sex, tempting her to vanquish their clothes and feel his naked skin against hers. His body was sculpted muscle, hard and strong, beckoning her to meld her own warrior’s body against it, to stroke it, to lick it, to conquer it.

Tanis kissed her back, with equal enthusiasm, alternately teasing her and devouring her. She tasted his humanity and for once was not revolted by it. His passion enflamed her own, leaving her drunk with lust. He tangled his fists in the fur at the small of her back. In many other parts of the world, her attire would be scandalous. It certainly was not acceptable here in Alba, but in the wilds of the Highlands, she found it a simple matter to ensure her existence went unnoticed, even in human form.

Woven within his humanity was the hint of pagan blood. Its impurity laced the delectable flavor of the man. She recoiled from the foulness of it, only because she reminded herself she should, before it was too late.

BLURB:

Tanis Cleary, laird of a small Highland clan, wants to protect what’s left of his family from the pagan god who hunts them. But even with his colossal strength, fed by the unholy blood in his veins, he cannot do it alone. His only ally is an insatiable angel with a chip on her shoulder. Will he desert his clan to follow the only woman who can save him from eternal damnation?

Kiah is an angel of God, tasked with guarding one of His most sacred vessels. Like any woman desperate to win her Father’s approval, Kiah will stop at nothing to succeed in her mission. Distracted by the lure of a man more compelling than any other, Kiah soon finds herself battling the fires of hell, her very existence in jeopardy.

Weekend Writing Warriors ~ 1/24/16 Time Enough to Love: A Pledge in Earnest

weekend_writing_warriors_header3

Welcome to Weekend Writing Warriors!

Thank you to everyone who came by to visit!

I was absent last week, so this week I’m continuing from the last week I posted, from Book 2 of my medieval romance Time Enough to Love, the boxed set that released earlier in January.

This scene is from Betrayal and picks up  right after the last snippet. After the devastating news that Geoffrey, her betrothed, has married another, Aylse has just been astounded by a proposal from his best friend, Thomas, who has concerns she may be pregnant.

TETL SET CORRECT COVER

“Why would you want that?” she asked, for indeed, no man she knew would want to claim another’s child as their own.

He paused, as if unsure how to answer. “When I pledged myself to your service, ’twas in absolute earnest. I mean to protect you in all ways possible, including safeguarding your reputation with the court. If you are with child and unmarried, you will be dismissed from Princess Joanna’s service in disgrace. I would not stand by and see that happen while I have means to prevent it.”

“But, Thomas, I do not wish to…marry.” Alyse closed her eyes and swallowed hard. The thought of being joined to another man—even Thomas—horrified her.

“And yet you must.”

Blurb for Time Enough to Love:

When Lady Alyse de Courcy is betrothed to Sir Geoffrey Longford, she has no choice but to make the best of a bad bargain. The hulking knight is far from her ideal man, and although he does possess some wit and charm, he is no match for the sinfully sensual man she secretly admires, Thomas, Earl of Braeton, her betrothed’s best friend.

From the first, Sir Geoffrey finds himself smitten by Lady Alyse, and, despite her infatuation with his friend, vows to win her love. When Geoffrey puts his mind to wooing Alyse, he is delighted to find her succumbing to his seduction. But when cruel circumstances separate them, Geoffrey must watch helplessly as Thomas steps in to protect Alyse—and falls in love with her himself.

As the three courtiers accompany Princess Joanna to her wedding in Spain, they run headlong into the Black Plague. With her world plunged into chaos, Alyse struggles with her feelings for both the men she loves. But which love will survive?

Time Enough to Love is available at Amazon.

That’s all for this week. Hope you enjoyed it!

And don’t forget to check out the rest of the Warriors here.  There’s some fantastic snippets to be read.

A Hairy Situation: Liza O’Connor and The Darkest Days

Darkest days tour banner2

I have a very hairy man in The Darkest Days. You might recall him from an earlier book as well, when he was locked in Bedlam and Vic set him free.

When Vic set him free, he’d escaped London and returned to a cabin in the woods his mother had built for him before she died. Turns out it’s in Litchfield. To be precise, it’s in the woods neighboring Jacko & Alice’s estate.

So when sweet little Daisy gets her throat torn out, naturally the locals blame the ‘wolfman’.

So Vic has to save him again, only he’s in a terrible condition. He’s starving and hasn’t had a bath in six months and his hair is matted right down to the skin. Vic cuts off as much as she can but once she takes him back to London to live at her house, she plans to contact her brother-in-law and not just to fix his teeth, which are all brown. In case you don’t remember, David is an extremely brilliant fellow who loves to build new things, thus explaining why Vic has an electric refrigerator years before they are commercially available. So it should be of no surprise that David creates an electric shaver for Richard, the Were Wolf man.

The main shaving device in the late 19th century was the straight edge. And in England, the blade would have been Sheffield silver steel. This product was the finest steel in the world and is still used in France even today.

But to shave using a straight edge would by a full time job for poor Richard, and he’d spend most of his day naked shaving one limb or another.

Fortunately, David has a great deal of inventor friends in America. His friend Gillette sends him a great many disposable safety razor blades to use in his current project. Using a large electric motor that sits on the floor with a cord to the device, his contraption has two razor blades moving backwards and forwards ever so slightly, with safety features to prevent the skin from being cut. It only has one speed and can’t be used near water, which means a dry cut only, but Richard thinks it is the finest creation ever.

With Richard’s electrically driven device, it greatly speeds up his shaving time. In fact, if he only shaves the areas people will see when he’s wearing a suit, he’s presentable in two hours. For the first time in his life, Richard can appear ‘human’.

And to this day an electric razor remains the main solution for those who suffer from Hypertrichosis.

And how advanced was David’s creation of an electric razor? Schick presented his first patent for an electric razor in 1921. However, everything needed to build an electric razor was available in 1895, only electricity did not run in most homes yet and rich men, who did have electricity, normally had servants to shave them with a straight edge and middle-class men went to a barber or did it themselves. To be honest, even in 1931 when Shick created a business to sell electric razors, they weren’t very popular and he struggled to keep his business alive.

But the one David built for Richard was the finest gift imaginable.

WARNING: we don’t get to actually see Richard use his shaver in the book. He had already moved out of Vic’s house by the time David built it. But the book does tell you where he went.

Darkest days tubs 3 400x640

blurb

When the pot has too many cooks a feast can be ruined, and that’s exactly what happens with Xavier and Vic’s new cases. Each proves more complicated than initially thought with criminals dropping out of the sky, wreaking havoc upon Xavier, Vic, and their excellent employees. By the end, Vic threatens to open a school that teaches criminals how to stay out of each other’s way.

Worse yet, a treasured member of the staff is shot in the heart while attempting to save Vic and the Queen’s cousin.

An Excerpt

“Everyone, to the tree now,” Jacko insisted, wishing he had Xavier’s ability to boss people around. When he was a pirate, he had no problems getting his crew to do as he asked. If they didn’t, he’d just shoot them and toss their body overboard, but that was a different time in his life and he had different standards. For a pirate, he was considered a great captain to ship with. Now he had an ambiguous position. While he was the ‘master’ of the big house, Alice actually managed the farmers.

“Now!” he snapped, using his captain’s voice.

Startled, the men moved to the tree.

Jacko opened both doors. As he set up the camera, he cursed the dimness still enveloping Daisy’s body. He had very little chance of capturing any details.

Just as he was about to give up this endeavor, a beam of sunshine came through the doors and pierced the darkness surrounding her body.

He managed to take three pictures before the farmers rushed inside.

“God Almighty! What was done to the poor girl?”

“Looks like something ripped her throat out.”

“But what could do that?”

Frederick spoke from the door. “I’ll tell you what it was. It’s the werewolf. It killed my Daisy and if we don’t send it back to hell, it’s going to slaughter us all.”

Not one farmer seemed to think his accusation ridiculous. In fact, they insisted they should go at once and hunt the creature down.

About the author liza

Liza O’Connor was raised badly by feral cats, left the South/Midwest and wandered off to find nicer people on the east coast. There she worked for the meanest man on Wall Street, while her psychotic husband tried to kill her three times. (So much for finding nicer people.) Then one day she declared enough, got a better job, divorced her husband, and fell in love with her new life where people behaved nicely. But all those bad behaviors has given her lots of fodder for her humorous books. Please buy these books, because otherwise, she’ll become grumpy and write troubled novels instead. They will likely traumatize you.

First Kiss with Ruth A. Casies’s The Druid Knight Tales

MedMon

Welcome to Medieval Monday! This time around we post excerpts that fulfill a different requirement each month. For the months of January/February we must post an excerpt showing the first kiss of the heroine and hero. My guest today is Ruth A. Casie with her medieval romance The Druid Knight Tales, which is FREE!

EXCERPT:

“Aye,” he said sleepily, followed by a soft snore.

She wiped the blood from the scratches on his cheek and studied him.

Full brows framed his wide-set eyes with long, thick lashes. His high cheekbones accentuated the deep hollows beneath them. His close-clipped beard outlined his full lips. His face spoke of power and ageless strength. He had a face that was easy to look at.

The wounds cleaned and bandaged, she bent over and gave him a lingering kiss on his forehead. Her head snapped up and her fingers went to her lips. They tingled as if she had eaten something spicy. She searched his face. His ashen color hadn’t changed. Panic welled in her throat. Her healing kiss always brought results.

His arm snaked around her and drew her to him. She didn’t resist when he pulled her closer and kissed her deeply. When she moved away his eyes were closed, the corners of his mouth tipped up in a smile, and his face took on a soft pink hue.

Relief flooded through her but was quickly replaced with doubt. For the first time she wondered if her healing kiss would be enough.

She prepared the camp and when she was done, sat back to rest. The smell of the wood and the snap of the fire were soothing. The dancing flames mesmerized her and drew her in deeper. The intertwined flames parted and in its midst she saw two figures following a light. She knew it was an omen but she could not tell if the sign was good or bad. A loud snap and a log fell, sending sparks flying, startling her out of her trance.

Blurb: The Druid Knight’s Tale

After a year of searching, Maximilian, the druid Grand Master, finds the sacred mistletoe destined for his soul mate shriveled and dead. He must journey to the Otherworld and tell the Ancestors of his failure.

Ellyn of Brodgar is an exceptional healer. But each healing kiss depletes her energy and brings her closer to death. Ellyn needs to find her own healing power before it’s too late.

Max and Ellyn are tossed into the Otherworld and have until the third sunset to appeal to the Ancestors or be lost forever. Together they find love, and as the last rays of the third sunset slip away, both are willing to sacrifice their hopes, dreams, and lives for the other. Do they have what it takes to escape the Otherworld and begin their life together?

Obsession by Jenna Jaxon

I’m not on Weekend Writing Warriors this week because I’m out of town taking my daughter back to school and so couldn’t monitor the comments or visit other blogs. I’ll be back with more of Time Enough to Love next weekend.

So for today, I’m re-blogging my post on Nights of Passion about my current obsession! 🙂

Jenna Jaxon's avatarNights of Passion

obsession

Yesterday morning I went to the flea market with my daughters and a friend. Not our usual Saturday activity, but my one daughter was leaving for school, and she asked me to go so I did.

We walked around the place, popping into and out of a lot of shops. In one I found a copy of Fanny Hill, the most popular piece of erotica in the 18th century (a great find since I’m currently writing a book set in, amongst other places, a brothel in the 18th century.) I also found a peacock necklace. (I love peacocks.) So it was a good start to the day.

One shop we went into had lots of really nice wooden furniture, many very prettyTypewriter decorative things to hang on the walls, and wonderful conversation pieces. I started looking at these object and thought, “I should start to re-decorate my house…

I’m ringing in the New Year by bringing back Jenna’s 411!

Let’s see what’s the 411 for January 13th.

Yes, Book 1 of The House of Pleasure series is on sale for .99. I’m still loving this cover with Jimmy Thomas and a Kristen Stewart look-alike. 🙂 Go on and grab this Georgian romance and start reading. Book 3, Only A Mistress Will Do  should be coming out later this year!

RUDY AWARD2

More Book News ~ Winner!

So happy to tell you that my Victorian romance, As Long As You’re Mine, was recently named the winner of the Historical Romance Category in The Rudy Contest given by my local chapter each year. Just as thrilling, the contest category judge has requested a full of the book, so in addition to writing on my current WIP, I’m polishing that manuscript as well to send off. 🙂

LotteryOn the Home Front ~ Lottery Fever

Yes, my house has also succumbed to Powerball Fever. I NEVER play the lottery, however, last week we bought 10 tickets, 5 on Wednesday and 5 on Saturday. We’ll be buying 5 more  for tonight’s drawing. 🙂 What would I do if I won? Well, after paying off all my debt, and retiring to write full-time, the dream would be to create the largest no-kill animal shelter in the  United States. Acres and acres of land with state of the art housing and equipment, an on-site army of vets and vet techs, and a cadre of people to go out to shelters and bring all the animals home. *sigh* Castle in the Sky moment. Wish me LUCK!

And how’s your week been?

Medieval Monday ~ Kim Headlee’s Snow in July: Kendra Requests a Boon

Welcome to Medieval Monday! This time around we post excerpts that fulfill a different requirement each month. For the month of JANUARy/February we must post an excerpt showing the first kiss of the heroine and hero. My guest today is Kim Headlee with her medieval romance Snow in July.

MedMon

Headlee - Snow in July cover

“Would my lord knight grant me a boon that would enable me to fulfill an altogether different vow?” Kendra slid her hands up his chest, reveling in the feel of his taut muscles beneath the tunic’s thin linen.

“Name it, my lady,” Alain said in a husky whisper.

“Please…” She stood on tiptoe to reach around his neck and pull his face to hers, drawing a deep breath. “Please kiss me.”

He lost no time in honoring her request. Their mouths met, tentatively at first, then harder and more ravenously as their mutual hunger found freedom. Their tongues entwined, locked in a dance far more sublime than any pale dream. She felt the void left by her brother’s death beginning, at last, to fill.

So this was why Del had been so insistent that she seek happiness. He knew it would help her heal, God rest his dear soul. She increased the pressure on Alain’s lips, and he answered in kind.

Faint shouts forced them to step apart. Alain looked out the nearest window and hurried to each of the others in turn, muttering in French.

“Is it the outlaws? What do you see?”

“Nothing.” He spat the word as if blaming it for the interruption. “The surviving outlaws must have returned. Does this tower have someplace to hide where they might not think to look?”

SYNOPSIS

Sir Robert Alain de Bellencombre has been granted what every man wants: a rich English estate in exchange for his valiant service at the Battle of Hastings. To claim this reward, the Norman knight must wed the estate’s Saxon heiress. Most men would leap at such an opportunity, but for Alain, who broke his vow to his dying mother by failing to protect his youngest brother in battle, it means facing more easily broken vows. But when rumors of rampant thievery, dangerous beasts, and sorcery plaguing a neighboring estate reach his ears, nothing will make him shirk duty to king and country when people’s lives stand at risk. He assumes the guise of a squire to scout the land, its problems, and its lady.

Lady Kendra of Edgarburh has been granted what no woman wants: a forced marriage to an enemy who may be kith or kin to the man who murdered her beloved brother. Compounding her anguish is her failure to awaken the miraculous healing gift bequeathed by their late mother in time to save his life. Although with his dying breath, he made her promise to seek happiness above all, Kendra vows that she shall find neither comfort nor love in the arms of a Norman…unless it snows in July.
