In this book, Alyse, the heroine, has just received the news that her betrothed lord, Sir Geoffrey Longford, has married another. “Derry, I beg thee. Ask.” Hawkyns chuckled. “Or shall I make it a royal command?”

“My liege.” Playfully attempting to curtsey while astride a horse proved to be awkward. “I am being foolish. I fear asking what I already know.”

Confusion settled onto his brow. “Why?”

“Truth is a scary thing. Unspoken truths can lie hidden in the shadows where they can be ignored.”

Hawkyns swung his leg over his mount and slid down the side. He reached up and helped her dismount. Standing close—too close—he placed her hand in his and waited for her to speak.
