I’m starting a goodish way into the story. Lady Alyse de Courcy has been betrothed to a knight she has never met, a hulking warrior who she must wed in a matter of weeks before they accompany the Princess Joanna on her journey to Spain. Sir Geoffrey Longford has taken a liking to his little bride; Alyse, however, is slower to give her affection. This scene takes place just after the first banns have been read (banns–public announcement of the intention to wed– had to be read three times on successive Sundays before a wedding could take place) and Alyse’s shyness has become an issue.
We are in Alyse’s POV.

“Good morrow, Lady Alyse,” Geoffrey stopped short, “but what is amiss, my

“What is amiss?” Alyse bristled, even more outraged that he did not immediately understand her fears, “You even need to ask what is amiss? Were you asleep when you stood before the altar that you did not see all the courtiers’ eyes on us–on me!” Her stomach clenched at the thought.
“You mean when the banns were read?”
Alyse gave him a withering look and stalked silently from the chapel.
“You did not wish to have the banns for our marriage read? Have you still no regard or trust for me then, Lady Alyse?” he said, an undertone of pique in his voice.

I remember this story, which was very well done. Nice to see these characters again and revisit the entire situation with you! I thought you captured the medieval ‘feel’ so well. Great snippet for us today!

Awe, this story is when I first read your writing! I love these two. This series left me amazed at how you’d seem to have written your characters into a corner as if there could never be resolution for any kind of happiness, and yet you did it. Bittersweet. A great series!

Than, you so much, Teresa! This is the story of my heart–I love these characters as well. Now that I should have more time for writing–well after this summer–I want to continue the series, which will still have Alyse and Geoffrey as minor characters in the remaining books. 🙂

Actually his friend rather dislikes Alyse and the effect she’s having on Geoffrey. It’s quite a lovers’ triangle. 🙂

She doesn’t know either of them really, but you know how seventeen-year-olds are–fall for a pretty face every time. 🙂 Still, Geoffrey is about to make a good case for why he’s the better choice.

Well, she is a bit assertive here, but she knows once she’s married to him, she won’t be able to be but so outspoken. Of course, hopefully, then she won’t need to be. 🙂
