My 10 year anniversary celebration continues with the highlighting of my second series, The House of Pleasure. And today I’m giving another snippet from Book 2, Only Marriage Will Do.
Set in the wild and wicked Georgian era, Only Marriage Will Do is the story of a woman who doesn’t know whether or not she is actually married to a man she hates.
Lady Juliet Ferrars flees London when she discovers the man she was engaged to has gone through with a proxy marriage against her wishes. She isn’t sure if he’s lying, or if she is indeed married to the villain. We are in her POV .
(Creative punctuation utilized to conform to WWW rules and snippet may therefore be slightly different from published version.)
The man raced toward her, calling out something she couldn’t hear for
the blood pounding in her ears. The candle he carried blew out; he cursed
and reached for her.
“No, get away, don’t touch me!” Slapping at his hands, she twisted
to avoid him and landed with a thud, flat on her back so all the air rushed out of
her lungs.
He sped around the end of the bed.
She struggled to scream for Glynis, but produced only a high-pitched
squeak.
The man knelt beside her.
Dear Lord, where was her rescuer now?
“Are you all right, Lady Juliet?” The concerned tone and familiar voice
of Amiable Dawson answered her prayer instantly.
BLURB:
Happily-ever-afters don’t always begin at “I do.”
When the man of her dreams rescues Lady Juliet Ferrers from the villain claiming to be her husband, she is sure she has found her one true love. But is she free to marry him? Not to be deterred, Juliet arranges for her hero to escort her to her family estate in far off Northern England—hoping that along the way she can win his love—and his hand…
Captivated by Juliet’s sweetness and beauty, Captain Amiable Dawson can’t help but be spellbound by the promise of a life with her. But the spell breaks when questions arise about her marital status. Soon the upstanding Amiable is unsure if he is indeed married to Juliet. And when his rival absconds with her, Amiable must choose between the law of the land and his heart’s desire to rescue Juliet once more…

Amiable is one of my favorite heroes. This scene reminded me of why.

Thank you, Diane! I think that’s easier on the characters than the other way around (a la Stephen King). LOL

I remember Amiable. That name is very striking and it sounds so American.

Thank you, Ed. I was trying more for Quaker, but in all honesty, the name just popped into my head as I was writing Only Scandal Will Do, and needed a name for Katarina’s suitor’s name. LOL The ways a writer’s mind works! 🙂

Yes, Quaker. That’s more precise than my more general ‘colonial America.’

Thank you, Teresa! There are actually three more in the series now! Number 4 came out last June (Marriage is book 2). And Number 5 is in the works, maybe for the fall. 🙂

Quite the dilemma (in the book blurb)! And the scene made me feel panicky too so it’s VERY well done, as always with your writing. Excellent excerpt!
