More from my Regency Christmas story, A Kiss Beneath the Mistletoe.
Jenny and the other young people at her aunt’s Christmas house party are out in the woods cutting greenery for decorations. They spy a mistletoe ball high in a tree and begin to play a game of running beneath the mistletoe. The forfeit for being caught ~ a kiss. Jenny wants to outrun Lord Somersby and avoid his kiss. Or does she?
Jenny squealed and pounded through the clearing, kicking up tufts of wet, dead leaves as she fled for the far side of the circle. She could hear her pursuer’s soft laugh as he drew closer to her. He’d have her arm in moments. Why not slow her stride and show him she wanted to be captured? Wanted his kiss?
Her steps faltered. How would it feel to have his body close to hers, closer even than in their waltz, his warm lips grazing her cheek? Anticipation stirred deep within. She slowed her pace and turned to face him.

Blurb:
Is one kiss ever enough?
Jenny Crowley has been duped! At her eighteenth birthday celebration her parents announce that instead of having the London Season she’s dreamed of for years, Jenny has been betrothed from birth to Alexander Isley, son of family friends and heir to a title. A distraught Jenny refuses point-blank to marry Alec, and when her aunt offers to whisk her away to a Christmas house party, complete with many eligible young bachelors, Jenny jumps at the chance to enjoy a variety of entertainments, be courted, and perhaps fall in love.
Alec Isley is between a rock and a hard place. He desires a marriage with Jenny no more than she does, but when his family’s dire financial status is revealed, he follows Jenny to the house party in hopes of convincing her to marry him after all. When he discovers who else is courting her there, Alec is frantic to keep her from making a dreadful mistake. Struggling with new-found feelings for his childhood friend, can Alec convince her of his love in time to save her from being ruined under the mistletoe?

You had me at “childhood friend” in the blurb. Loved the snippet too and can’t wait for more. 🙂

Wonderful building of anticipation. I want that kiss to happen!

Quite the moment, not sure her decision is wise but at least she’s proactive. I do love Regency Christmas and holiday stories! Great snippet, leaves us wondering which way things will go next.

She is, perhaps, playing a dangerous game here.

She is indeed, Ed. Much more dangerous than she knows. 🙂

She’s so trusting, that if she lets herself be caught he won’t do anything she’ll regret.

And that’s a major problem here, Caitlin. She’s not very savvy socially, so she’s vulnerable in ways other young ladies were not.

She wants to be caught for now, but might she change her mind once the fantasy becomes reality?

Oh, she’s there to make up her mind, Carrie-Anne. I think she’s going to change it more than once for sure. LOL

Jenny is trying to make the most of her house party, so some hesitation is probably warranted. 🙂 And what woman doesn’t like to change her mind!

Thank you, Diane! I wanted this to be a sweet Christmas story, with a playfulness that does become rather serious at the end. Remember, Regency ladies could get compromised and married off for the most innocent things.

That is the very question, Charmaine. And it does come down to the wire. 🙂

Well, she thinks so. But Jenny hasn’t quite made up her mind yet. Thank you, Rachel!
