Good morning and welcome back to Sunday Social. I had to take a break over the holiday because we were traveling, but I’m back now and talking about southern comfort foods.
Born and raised in Virginia, I’ve eaten southern cooking all my life and there are some foods that make me feel better just thinking about eating them. Of course if you read my Thanksgiving post you know that collards are high on that list. But also predominant are my mother’s chicken vegetable soup, my Auntie’s macaroni and cheese (with Cracker Barrel cheese and tomatoes), chicken and dumplin’s, and fried corn bread cakes sliced open while hot and spread with butter and cheese.
Oh, man, I’m getting hungry. We had those with fried oysters last night. Be right back. ~ Now I’m eating two with cheese for breakfast. Yum!
Well, I hope I’ve made you hungry too! What’s your go-to comfort food?

Yummmm. Those cornbread cakes look delicious! I’d have a hard time limiting myself to just one favorite comfort food. Maybe chicken and dumplings or my mom’s potato salad. Your post made me hungry!

Hi, Sandy! So good to see you! Yes, potato salad is another one I didn’t mention (my complete list would probably run pages!) but love. And deviled eggs! It is so hard to limit this particular list, isn’t it? Thanks so much for coming by!

Now you’re talking our language, Jenna. LOL. We’re born and bred Floridians and have to say that good ole dirty south cookin’ is a way of life for us. Fried cornbread cakes, collards, mac and cheese… oh, you’ve got us raiding our fridge and pulling out the crockpots. Mathair’s definitely a traditional southern girl: fried chicken, mac and cheese, collards and cornbread; while I lean towards the bayou aspect of soul food: gumbo, shrimp and grits and let’s not forget mud bugs and buttermilk pies. Great post, Jenna and welcome back!

I’m with Tera. I love fried okra. My granny set her kitchen on fire several times frying it, and had to quit. I haven’t had any like it in forever. Gnocchi is another favorite. My personal comfort food is tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwiches. But popcorn trumps all of it.

Tomato soup was the equavalent of chicken soup in my house. If you were sick you got tomato soup and buttered toast. Still one of my faves. Grilled cheese too. You’ve got a great list, Gemma!

I’ve thought about this food all day. So I made my other favorite comfort food for dinner – Meatloaf, horseradish mashed potatoes and green beans. Topped it off with Espresso Nutella Mousse brownies. Are you still hungry? There are leftovers.

I’ve never had fried cornbread cakes but they look yummy. My go-to comfort food is chocolate. Cliched, I know, but I love chocolate 🙂

I love a good plate of pirogi, drizzled liberally with olive oil and lots of sautéed mushrooms. Other comfort foods include mashed potatoes, hummus, tempeh, and peanut butter.

You have quite a smorgasboard of comfort foods, Carrie-Anne. I definitely agree on the mashed potatoes and hummus. I get cravings for hummus sometimes. Good stuff! 🙂

I love mashed potatoes when I’m in need of comfort. Nothing like potatoes to fill your stomach. 🙂

And nothing can beat the real thing. Lumps and all, the creaminess just can’t be beat. How much more can I get on my plate for lunch? LOL Maybe I can move the mashed potatoes to supper. 🙂

I don’t have a comfort food. I feel like I’m really missing out, unless chocolate counts as a comfort food. Yep, put me down for chocolate.

I think chocolate is most writer’s comfort food. LOL You definitely get to choose that, Joanne! 🙂

I don’t cook (not well, anyway), so if I want comfort, I grab a jar of Skippy peanut butter! Haha! But really, I don’t think I have any real comfort food. Is that sad or what? Although, I do love my friend’s pierogies. I could eat those all day!

Oh,man, that is good! The first place I ever had fried okra was a restaurant in Memphis, TN called The Blackeyed Pea. The decor made you think you were on someone’s front porch. And the food was as southern as you could get. Now I’ve got a craving for okra! I really didn’t think this post through. 🙂

Most of my comfort foods are German. Fleischkaese is high on my list as are linsen und spaetzle, and kaese spaetzle. Tweeted and shared on FB.

Now you know I don’t speak German, Ella! What are those interesting sounding dishes? 🙂 All I know is Vienersnitzel (and I can’t spell that!)! LOL

Fleischkaese is like a long meatloaf, but it is ground so fine it has the consistency of a round of baloney. Very addicting. Linsen und spaetzle are lentils cooked I a savory sauce served with spaetzle, noodles that can be made with or without eggs, and a long form of wurst (something like a hot dog but much better and they come in all sorts of varieties.) Kaese is cheese. So Kaese Spaetzle is sort of like macaroni and cheese, but the cheese is usually a Swiss variety. Wiener Schnitzel is from Wien, or in English, Vienna. Traditional Weiner Schnitzel is made from veal.

My Mom’s chicken and dumplings. She makes them completely from scratch and they are amazing! And her mac and cheese, also completely from scratch. She covers the top with bread crumbs and cooks them like a casserole. Yum!

Oooh, that does sound good. Were the dumplings flat or fluffy? My favorite chicken and dumplings growing up were my best friend’s grandmother’s. They were flat and absolutely melt in your mouth. I’ve never been able to do that. Now I can’t wait until lunch, Louisa! LOL
